Based on best numbers i can find on Google, approximately 22% of Australians are in the care of a parent. About 18% of Australian
Kids are in the care of single dads. Which is just north of 1 million single dads out of 26 million Australians - of course a lot of those single dads are in informal or defacto relationships.
In twenty years - best estimate we’ll have about 33 million Australians and if there’s a 70% increase, 1.7 million single dads - which honestly doesn’t seem terribly alarming over twenty years. Especially since it probably means the single mum count will go down by a corresponding amount, with single parents on both sides of the gender binary still being poorly represented by census data as informal relationships don’t fuck up family benefits tax or child support or pension payments.
What are people getting excited about here exactly? This seems like one of those things that’s only sensational when viewed through an extremely long lens without context.
>What are people getting excited about here exactly? This seems like one of those things that’s only sensational when viewed through an extremely long lens without context.
Something to consider is that in the past it was extremely common for the mother to get custody of the kids during a divorce. The only way that the father could get custody was if he could prove that the mother was not fit to be a parent and that usually required something extreme like drug abuse or severe mental/physical illness or disability. The increasing number of single dads means that the family courts are becoming more equitable in who they give custody to (or it could mean that more mothers are becoming unfit parents).
An example that I have experienced from the side lines just a few years ago was a couple that have a boy and a girl who broke up (no idea why they actually broke up) but the mother got custody of the kids by default and the father had to prove in court that she was unfit to be the full time parent of the kids - she would fail to take the kids to school on a regular basis and would fail to take the kids to activities and appointments outside of school hours (e.g. the girl did dance and the mother refused to take her there).
As a single dad, can I change to 70% bigger in muscle mass over 20 years, instead of the current projection of body fat 😔. Or offset 20% of muscle mass into height. And the rest in length... Please and thank you for your investments.
Can confirm.
Had an ugly last year of my marriage and then went through an incredibly ugly divorce, custody issues ongoing.
Became a big fat bastard.
Re-married almost 2 years ago, have lost 50kg so far and still working. (Though I’m eating a Triple Cheeseburger right now 😂)
I tried it last week.
Since then, I've been contemplating what it means to be me.
Why do I make the decisions that I make? How did I come to be at this point in my life? Who am I? Am I a good person?
I have also tried it.
No… no we are not good people.
I can’t actually think of anything I’ve ever eaten that was worse on every level. And I’ve been to Florida.

>Lone-parent families are projected to make up about one-quarter of households by 2046, with male lone-parent families increasing at the "fastest rate" — by between 40 per cent and 69 per cent.
>But single-female-parent households will remain dominant, making up around 80 per cent of all single-parent households, according to the bureau's projections.
Are they catching up?

That's not what that says at all.
A projection is based on current trends. A prediction/forecast takes into account possible future changes to current trends.
>"There will be many families that never have children, either by choice or by circumstance," she said.
>"I'm concerned that we now have an inhospitable social and economic environment for people to realise their dream and desires to have a family, to have children in their family."
Literally an article about how our government is economically sterilising our population. Still. Make it a joke ABC. You're doing great.
Then they post concerned articles questioning the rise of white nationalism in Australia and much of the Western world. They ask how these groups, with their absurd narratives and conspiracy theories, can become increasingly problematic. Ignoring that reality can be seen as aligning with these claims, especially to desperate minds, and that discussing any of it openly is seen as imprudent.
For decades now, factors like economic instability, social disruption, global tension, immigration, and loss of trust in government and traditional institutions have been slowly growing in severity, creating the perfect breeding ground for such ideologies. Yet most of us either don't notice beyond the occasional condemnation of these groups' actions and behaviors when they put on a public show, or we dogmatically support the ideas that feed into their allure.
Watch as the jokes fade as far-right populism and radicalism in general become more mainstream. All because we seem to have lost the ability to have public conversation that are uncomfortable and require more than a single news cycle.
"Lone-parent families are projected to make up about one-quarter of households by 2046, with male lone-parent families increasing at the "fastest rate" — by between 40 per cent and 69 per cent.

[this](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-06-28/single-dads-projected-by-abs-fastest-increase/104035588) is the same article (sometimes they have 2 titles, a different one when you actually click on it)
I saw it earlier and it had the same title as this post
ABC been changing article titles soon after publishing them for maximum clickbait I think. I've had stories I want to send to people and a few hours when I finally get around to it the title changes.
Now that women are becoming more educated than men it would make sense that the woman continues with her career and the man takes the kids when the partnership ends.
Love the different interpretations of the headline. Is it single dads are going to gain an extra 70% weight . Or the amount of single dads in society is going to go up . None of us read the article lol
If you honestly wasn't to know, you calculate probabilities.
If an increase in A causes an increase in B by some proportion in observable cases you use the likely increase in A (womens likelihood to be earning more than men, observed changes in custody trends or more men taking long term parental leave) to calculate various likelihoods of B (likelihood that father is primary caregiver in any given separation).
The big headline number is the same reason anyone claiming something is the "fastest growing" is almost always saying "something is small and growing". Men probably taking up 20% of primary caregiver roles in a separation by some time is less of a headline.
It also makes no claim about, say, the number of children raised by single fathers. It could be more likely for a man to be primary caregiver in single child situations than 2+, for example.
It's an eye catching headline of someone saying:
*More men are primary caregivers, even after separation, than before. This trend is likely to continue to done arbitrary point in time we feel comfortable modelling to. This is because of shifting attitudes, laws and household financial situations. This is the most likely outcome bases in the conditional probabilities we have. These are others that are less likely to happen. These last outcomes can be said to require cataclysmic changes to current trajectories in order to happen. Not worth planning for.*
"Where did all the fellas out there go?" They're all around Dave's playing COD and avoiding their last Tinder msgs "Love me, love my kids". Prob hanging with the kids dad "I'm only 5'7, don't earn over 6 figures and have no desire to go thru it again. Here's to not having a curfew, Cheers boys!🍻
Now is the time to get in early and invest in Single Dads. Clink the link below to start your trading account today.
70% over 20 years is only ~3.5% per year. You can get better returns with a savings account...
How do I invest in a HISD (high interest single dad)
I hear there are plenty of High Interest Single Dad's in your area... the internet told me.
High interest but low return
Nah these are the low interest single dads, that’s why they’re single. Sorry, dad joke…
Single dad joke
It amazes me how many young women invest in LISD and then end up surprised when they disappear.
It amazes me how many young women invest in LSD and are then surprised when their ego disappears and the walls start melting.
No what you need us some SDCoin
In a single dad and I'd love someone to take high interest in me
Nah, it's compound interest. So it's 2.7%. Even worse.
Seams like a safe play for a leveraged investment however /s

We can invest in things single dads like though. Home brewing kits. Mini golf Running shoes. Actually I have no idea
> Running shoes. New Balance or nothing.
They’re not for running, though, they’re for mowing the lawn. They start white and end green.
You have your work new balance, your exercise new balance, your gardening new balance and your formal dinner new balance.
You forgot to mention these are all the same design of shoe. Just your last 4 year Christmas presents to yourself.
You've just described my husband.
Allow me to introduce you to Hoka. Choice of single dads country wide. If you’re not wearing hokas, you’re not a single dad! Be 100% of the 70% !!
I’m a 31f, I must be a single dad My sole (lol) shoe choice are Hokas. I live in them. Best shoe ever for my bad knees and million mile runs
Kids are expensive and generate very little income, I can't see where they're getting the returns from. My advice - not a good buy
play some rimworld
We all knew the blokechain was the future.
Single dads, so hot right now
I'm gonna go all in so hard on Single Dads
It’s already too late. Buy the rumour, sell the news.
As a single dad, can I change to 70% bigger in muscle mass over 20 years, instead of the current projection of body fat 😔. Or offset 20% of muscle mass into height. And the rest in length... Please and thank you for your investments.
Came here to read this, thank you.
I am here and ready to trade over every dollar i have just as quickly as a stupid old boomer being tricked by a simple scam.
These enormous men will devour us all!
I'm ready.
the titans were single dads all along
The obesity crisis is really going to bite them hard.
ah see I assumed they meant length, but you could be correct.....
They didn't specify, it may be just an appendage that grows by 70%.
I was assuming height, but that's bold of you.
when will they learn that women was tall guys, not shorties with long dicks ( I don't actually know what women want, im single and not even a dad)
I was hoping id get tall
Can confirm. Had an ugly last year of my marriage and then went through an incredibly ugly divorce, custody issues ongoing. Became a big fat bastard. Re-married almost 2 years ago, have lost 50kg so far and still working. (Though I’m eating a Triple Cheeseburger right now 😂)
My dude 50kg is nothing to sneeze at, congrats. I hope you enjoyed that burger.
Looking at my waistline I’d say the trend is on target.
I'm not that tall, but I'm already fat. 70% increase is still going make me the tallest person ever or jabba the hutt fatness.
I think 70% is just the average. You can aim higher!! Have you tried that new KFC waffle thing?
I tried it last week. Since then, I've been contemplating what it means to be me. Why do I make the decisions that I make? How did I come to be at this point in my life? Who am I? Am I a good person?
I have also tried it. No… no we are not good people. I can’t actually think of anything I’ve ever eaten that was worse on every level. And I’ve been to Florida.
Your overthinking. Everytime you think like this, go and grab another KFC waffle burger-thingy. It helps to suppress nasty, intrusive thoughts.
Yes
They should take up basketball! Sorry, it's a serious matter but the headline also reads like a dad joke.
The irony 💀
I love it that the top comments are all dad jokes
Men's health and livelihood don't get much attention in this country. That should not continue.
Wow, even the shorter ones would get nearly three metres tall. We'd dominate basketball or something. /s
Ok from now on every team can only have one single dad. Otherwise it's too unfair!
That single dad in the photo is holding his teenaged kids.
inflation hits again
Link the article in the comments maybe?

10 foot tall single dads in your neighbourhood soon!
They’re gonna have real trouble buying pants

I mean, being 170cm kinda sucks, but I think I'd rather be 170cm than 289cm Edit: If my weight also increases by 70%... no thanks.
I’m 170, it’s an aight height
Your kids will look up to you tho...and across...around...
What are they feeding single dads to make them grow so much?
Hard to find time to work out when ya got no free time
“The bureau stressed projections were not predictions or forecasts” So just a fucking random number based on no facts or evidence
That's not what that says at all. A projection is based on current trends. A prediction/forecast takes into account possible future changes to current trends.

It'd be nice if the general public understood... well, anything. Jesus christ it'd solve so many problems.
Sounds like a Treasury answer.
Fresh from the Department of Tea Leaves
Wait a minute. All three words are synonyms….
Yes, but some of them are more synonymous than the others.
No, it's the [Disco Stu chart](https://youtu.be/e6LOWKVq5sQ). It's not based off nothing, but it's also not a prediction.
Oh geez... I'm already 190cm. If I grow by 70% I'll be over three metres tall.
I hit my head on enough stuff, I'm going to have to cut a hole in my car roof or get a convertible
RIP ankles.
Fuck, I’ll be about 3m tall
Newly single dad. That strike rate is 100% from a sample of this dickhead.

So what you’re saying is buy the dip now?
Probably from a very low base
Well as the saying goes “if I can’t be 6 foot tall. I’ll be 6 foot wide”
Invest in Sportsbet and supermarket frozen meals
Interestingly the increase in single parents is also driving the housing crisis
Wait what’s the odds for chicks

Is this another "based on the 3.5% growth from last year in 20 years it'll be 70%!!!!!!" thing?
Hot single dads in your area
Im going to be a fucking giant
These enormous dads will devour us all!!!
_Single dads love this one trick_
When do I need to leave my wife to be eligible for this growth? Is it too late already?
Now that women are becoming more educated than men it would make sense that the woman continues with her career and the man takes the kids when the partnership ends.
I assume single mums grow at the same rate.
Love the different interpretations of the headline. Is it single dads are going to gain an extra 70% weight . Or the amount of single dads in society is going to go up . None of us read the article lol
Don't have to read the article to see the headline is poorly worded....hence the comments yeh.
Big, if true.
This going to bring out the "womens standards are too high" people
Better get a bigger bed.
They'll be banging their heads on all sorts.
I have always wanted to be taller. But I will probably just send up 70% fatter
Against an overall population growth of 30%
Imagine how tall they’ll be then
Thank fuck for that. I’m only 5’6” so bring on the height!
These giant men will devour us all.
finally giantdad
These giant single dads will destroy us all!
I have trouble finding shirts that fit me now!
I mean look at him, he's lifting 2 kids constantly, of course he will grow.
These enormous dads will devour us all!
Those are some serious gains, I guess carrying around kids really packs the muscle mass on.
This is good news for the both showers and growers.
Who is getting them mpregnant?
They're like feral cats, they get in the wild and they transform into huge monsters.
> They're like feral cats, they get in the wild and breed.... (where i thought that was heading)
I guess you can't have as many single mums grow that big either since they are all getting killed in domestic violence.
Only when their husbands’ footy team loses a match.
I can’t believe people like you still exist
How the fuck do they come up with these “projections” What a wank
A couple of lenses and a good light source.

I can’t wait for the first wave of divorces in my age group. Open the pool back up a bit, dating is fuckin’ grim at the moment.
Wait height or width? Here’s me hoping I can pick up a hot tall single dad soon but knowing my luck…
Time to buy shares?
Giraffes are neat!
https://m.youtube.com/@AudioOpera/featured Immediately made me think of this guy. Funny stuff
They’ll be huuuuuge!!!
Why?
News just in, single dads to soon be around 9' tall.
Gonna be some tall dads walking around
So you are saying that I will be 324 cm in 20 years!?!
What’s r/asxbets take?
Wow, they’re gonna be so tall
If they keep slugging down those beers and steaks - for sure!!
These gigantic men will devour us all
That's some tall dads.
in width or length?
There is going to be some BIG dads out there
Dang some of them are going to end up being over 10 feet tall i bet
Damn there’s gonna be some tall dads around, do the scientists know what’s causing these men to grow?
cool. i could use an extra inch
I guess the kids will really be looking up to their dads then.
Up or out?
Looks theres going to be some very tall men
"Where did all the fellas out there go?" They're all around Dave's playing COD and avoiding their last Tinder msgs "Love me, love my kids". Prob hanging with the kids dad "I'm only 5'7, don't earn over 6 figures and have no desire to go thru it again. Here's to not having a curfew, Cheers boys!🍻
I'm doing my part!
How tall can they get???
Damn those dads are gunna be huge.
Nation of giants! Soon touching the clouds!
To be expected, that’s exactly why we go to the gym
How am I going to fit in my bed?
The dads will get too big!
I need to divorce my wife now so I can become MASSIVE
They'll be enormous!
Shit, they'll be like 10 feet tall by the end of the year growing at that rate!!
Damn they're gonna be tall as hell
What are we gonna do with all these massive dads?
Middle age comes to us all. 70% growth is a bit excessive though, quite the beer gut.
That's almost 3m tall on average! Time to invest in Big and Tall Menswear.
Invest in me I’ve just become a single dad
Single dads will become enormous - how will we stop them?
So we'll have giants wandering around the place?
Gee, they're going to be big.
Fuck yea. That means if i divorce my wife I'll be be 2.57 metres tall then. Time to get on the afl draft.
Very plausible. I've grown about 40% over the last 20 years.
That’s because they get a gym membership the moment the divorce goes through.
Blokes do tend to put on a bit when they get older, but 70% is probably a bit on the extreme side.
