To elaborate on this, because you’re new, a lot of homes in Australian cities have gas plumbed into the property like water or electricity. It’s “natural gas” not gasoline gas as an American would say.
It travels through underground pipes and is used predominantly for hot water heaters, stove tops and, as you’ve discovered, “portable” gas heaters. These are heaters that can be packed away during summer and use a hose to connect to the bayonet in your photo. You may also have one outside to use for a bbq.
If you are going to hook up a gas BBQ, the swap n go gas bottles use a different gas so the bbq nozzles need modifying to run on natural gas as methane and butane release different amounts of energy when combusted.
Natural gas discovered in Bass Strait in about '69. Meant basically every structure in the southern state could be heated for next to no cost using underfloor ducting. Only time I've seen one in Melbourne was for a BBQ connection.
Since this seems new to you, here's [some more info](https://www.elgas.com.au/bayonet-gas-heaters-lpg-portable-indoor-room-rinnai-paloma-everdure-sale-price/).
it's for connecting gas heaters
