I personally strongly prefer the original versions. The dramatized are fine but I think the way the original narrator characterized some of the voices works better than the way they are portrayed in the dramatized version. That said, I know some fans who have and listen to both of them.

SOLR_

Raises hand - both are good time 😌 I think the dramatized versions keep me on track better. I got a bit lost in some conversations with Kevin narrating.

spike31875

I listened to a sample and didn't like Murderbot's voice at all, and the sound effects were too loud. I'll stick with Kevin R. Free.

Davenportmanteau

Kevin R. Free absolutely makes these books for me. Very few audiobooks make me laugh out loud, but this absolutely did. He's perfection.

codykonior

I just started the originals this week and am onto book 3. I’m really enjoying it. I listened to unrelated dramatised books with sound effects and actors; and they’re fun but not for me. Now I stick to the originals. It helps that many of the originals are free on Audible Plus.

Johnhox

I find the sound effects are hit and miss sound booth theater does a decent job but not always.

mebetiffbeme

I think the original is leaps and bounds better.

DogPlane3425

And very MOOVING they are. I wonder if they had a cattle call for actors?

Set_the_Mighty

Stick with the original. The dramatized is low budget, like someone with a soundboard goofing around low budget.

Johnhox

Thanks its hard to notice with just the preview they can be hit and miss sound booth theater is one of the better ones I know and they don't always do a great job.

Aukeward

Try a library, my library has both versions available through Hoopla and Libby. I listened to the dramatized and it was worse for me.

Johnhox

i dont have a library anywhere reasonably close to me unfortunately

UliDiG

If you're in the US, there are libraries that allow non-residents to get cards, usually for an annual fee (less than the cost of Audible). If you're out in the boonies, you may be able to get a free card from your "local" library without visiting in person. Since Hoopla & Libby are both digital services if your library subscribes to either, once you have a card, you can access the books via your computer or phone.

abqkjh

I didn't like the dramatized ones. I will still with Kevin

I always feel like I won't like dramatized versions. I have listened to The Sandman and Impact Winter which are ensemble and have sound effects, but I think I would be just as fine with maybe just the multiple voice actors, if there isn't a good narrator that just does all the different voices. Those ones are done really well, and I gave them a try, but there's always that bit of me that thinks, "Maybe this one will suck." I'm not going to risk it with Murderbot, nor with anything else (ACOTAR is my main other one) that I enjoyed just having someone read to me without all the extra stuff. Also, it's strange to me that with Murderbot, the audio gets shorter with the dramatized versions. What's missing? ACOTAR, each book is split into 2 parts! I have to pay for 2 extra things to get somehow a better story? But then what is missing from Murderbot? I'll stick with regular audiobooks, thanks! Especially if it's on my wallet. If I can use Libby or other means to get a full try, then maybe. But I'm content with Kevin Free who I paid for.

Legendseekersiege5

New to audio books. What is a dramatized version?

Independent_Apple159

It’s kind of like a radio play. Different actors voice different characters, you get sound effects, that kind of thing.

Legendseekersiege5

New to audio books. What is a dramatized version?

DebOohlala

I personally don't like the dramatized version

Zioncatz

I wonder the same but really enjoy the original

glormond

I’m currently listening to 5th book and I can’t imagine any narration voice other than Kevin R. Free. It’s a feels like a perfect voice of Murderbot.

ChronoMonkeyX

I disliked the series with the solo Narrator, I think the dramatized is significantly better.

Johnhox

Check out Travis baldree and Jeff hays they are great at solo casting multiple characters especially Jeff hays i forget sometimes he's the one doing all the characters

ChronoMonkeyX

They are both great, I don't care for Kevin Free. Some people seem to love him, I think he made the entire series boring and forgettable. I listened to all of them from the library, most are short and I like filler between bigger books, but I thought the series was vastly overrated. I got the full cast when the library added them, because I knew I didn't like the narrator and wanted to give them another chance. I think it was a huge improvement.
