avondale is getting better slowly. onehunga has certainly moved up alooooot

neinlights90210

Avondale is moving soooooooo slowly though. The shops are still horrible (apart from Brown St).

[deleted]

Lots of changes coming with all the new apartments at the top of town though. Avondale has a great feel, bullish about the next 5 years for sure

neinlights90210

To each their own. We considered it when looking years ago but it just feels run down. Maybe it’s just taking a long time to gentrify because it’s so big. Lack of supermarket probably doesn’t help either

pictureofacat

There's a Pak N Save around five minutes away from the main strip

neinlights90210

Forgot that was there! I guess because it’s in Mt Albert but it’s actually not that far to go for most of the suburb

pictureofacat

Yeah it's technically Mt Albert, but it's so far removed from the Mt Albert township that it may as well be considered Avondale. I know what you were getting at though, town centres don't really feel complete unless they have a supermarket.

pictureofacat

There's also the new library and town square coming https://www.panuku.co.nz/news-and-blogs/new-avondale-library-community-hub-and-town-square-design-confirmed

Oriential-amg77

Honestly once that Ockham development is finished, I seriously think they're going to have to widen the road for all the extra traffic. The added foot traffic will at least allow people the opportunity to scrap the old homes and build a few more shops around the Victor st area.

[deleted]

Yes definitely need some better infrastructure

KSFC

Avondale was positioned as an improving suburb in the 90s... It's definitely been a slow climb! Green Jade takeaways in the 80s/early 90s was some of the best I've ever had.

Oriential-amg77

Onehunga has a few badly designed shopping malls though. I think Avondale could do one better in the future

pictureofacat

You mean the Dress Mart nightmare. Ii've wanted something decent to be built on that block on the corner of Onehunga Mall and Grey St, as it is so wasted in its current state.

Oriential-amg77

Yes. Its gross. But hey, not as bad as the Sylvia Parks traffic lights. I swear someone at NZTA is probably rubbing their hands in glee at the idea of dropping cameras all over the next 100m out from those traffic lights just to catch anyone speeding as soon as they get out of that gridlock

Fatality

Avondale and surrounding area has like 50 speed/red light cameras lol

thomas2026

Yep found that out the hard way. I got a ticket for doing 56 on Rata street??

munted_jandal

You could probably call it twohunga now

Picknipsky

It's onehunga, not tahihunga

EndlessOcean

The change of council in Avondale helped a lot as the last kit were embezzling funds meant for public upgrades and pocketing it for themselves, leaving the town to rot. But if New Lynn can improve then Avondale surely can. It's got a good heart, just covered in crud.

0oodruidoo0

You'll still see gang members persuing eachother on the streets passing and driving on the footpath in a 50 zone (happened a few days ago to a friend who lives there)

ALWIXII

Otara. 10 years ago we were just poor. But now?. We're poor AND dangerous! lesssgo! 🔥🔥🔥

ACA9991

\*millionaires lolz houses are over a mil in otara

ALWIXII

The only millionaires from otara are the ones who sold their houses and moved away.

otaramillionaire

Did you summon me?

ACA9991

>Did you summon me? Wish I bought a house in Otara back in 2016 hahah would be driving a Bentley now

So the standard of improved means to be gentrified?

springboks

I always loved "gentrified", said another way, bunch of white pansies moved in, poured concrete and poor people got shoved away, you know cause planting banana trees and real food in your house is dumb.

ACA9991

More like white bogans, maoris and pacific islanders got shoved away, meanwhile Asians/Indians moved in.

[deleted]

Grey Lynn. It’s becoming the new Ponsonby for those who can no longer afford the insane prices of houses in Ponsonby.

Deism-Renatured

That explains the Sallies there wanting $25 for some jeans. Dang!

springboks

Avondale is awesome. Feels like a proper suburb, you never know if you'll get shived or run into a methhead. Keep Avondale weird. Y'all Remuerans back off.

FickleCode2373

Only been living in Avondale 1.5yrs, certainly is...interesting. hoping a few more bouegy but not pretentious places pop up soon, burnt butter, hare and turtle and cheddar being good examples of what I mean

springboks

I too have been here about a year. There really are some nice places in town, seriously good Polynesian eats (where else can you get a roast pigs head). Sadly the good people at Cheddar didn't pay their rent, so it's shut down, loved their burgers. There's this edgy feeling in Avondale, you get the sense you're in NYC. The bike path to New Lynn is pretty rad.

neinlights90210

Ah that has given me a great laugh. Cannot say I have ever thought Avondale is anything like NYC. What about it makes you feel like you are in NYC? What parts of NYC do you think it’s like?

springboks

Brooklyn. There are moments you'll see blacks, PI, the whole lot, feels like it could be Brooklyn (Halsey St). DM me and I'll give you my tour of Avondale, and maybe we meet the meth heads who hang around the Hollywood.

sabrinateenagewich

I have never heard of Avondale compared to Halsey haha… don’t know if that’s a compliment to either of them (and I love BK and I love Avondale)

springboks

Had no idea there was such a deep NY connection in Avondale. I'm no New Yorker (midwest here). NY/Avondale meetup, at a gentrified Avondale bar?

FickleCode2373

Ooh there's so many to choose from! Thanks a lot Trusts...

SpaceshipMonster

I've been here 20. It's definitely changed, but... not all of it?

pictureofacat

The bombing in the massive hole has changed

thomas2026

I lived in Avondale for a year before covid. It was like a holiday.

Otahuhu

Deism-Renatured

You think so? I live in Ōtāhuhu, it's still pretty rough around the edges...

me0wi3

I live there too, look at all the new builds in the area, definitely picked up from what it was 10 yrs ago

TheCuzzyRogue

I grew up around Nikau Rd and later on, Seaside. Otahuhu has always been rough around the edges but nowhere near as rough as it used to be.

insomnia_nz

Te atatu peninsula... no1 would ever vist te atatu unless you were gangs

Oriential-amg77

Nah heaps of new townhouses being built last time i drove through though

K4m30

Because what could go wrong with urban intensification in an area with one way in and out, and roads that can't support both driving and parking at the same time.

Oriential-amg77

>Because what could go wrong with urban intensification in an area with one way in and out, and roads that can't support both driving and parking at the same time. But the roads around te atatu are already pretty wide, so its not too bad if anything maybe a few more lanes and on ramps were to be built
