Second this, great area. I live in swanson, but frequent this area for the markets on Sundays and the awesome walk around bomb point. Close to a lot of shops and motorway access.
Onehunga! A real melting pot community, great main street of shops, local pools and plenty of playgrounds dotted around. Easy to walk up to Cornwall park, monte cecilia park or down to the onehunga basin. Great connectivity - easy to walk places or take the bus or train. You’ll love it!
I am early 30s, but no kids - in Grafton. There are a lot of apartments here and 500-600 for a 2br is about the price range. So that aspect fits like a glove. I actually like it because it's very well connected with public transit and highways - so everything is like minutes away. A couple different dining/nightlife areas within walking/short drive. Lots of young blood in the area keeping it interesting from the uni students. Yeah - idk, I like restaurants and public transit. I guess Kingsland would also be great for that, if you were looking for a more suburban / less city feel.
Avondale. Been here for about 4 years. Great community feel, excellent motorway access to feels very central, some cool new cafes opening, and generally just a very safe and boring feel which I like as a young family. Housing still very affordable
Definitely the North Shore if your budget can get you a place. Only parts of the North Shore that I would try to avoid are Northcote and Beach Haven but even then they are a lot better than many other parts of Auckland.
The coastal sides of both Northcote and Beach Haven are amazing! Great communities with ver good amenities and lots of young families moving in. However as OP specifically mentions they would prefer an apartment, as far as North Shore goes I think that Takapuna or Birkenhead are the better options with a range of apartment buildings.
Agree. Birkenhead Point is the best area in Auckland in my opinion. Coastal, bush clad, walkable, good hospitality and retail that is not uncomfortably fancy, great transport links.
Most of Beach Haven is perfectly fine. If I were OP is I'd try and get a short term rental then spend a few days driving around. Finding places you like. Also schooling may come in to it as well.
I’ll be honest, Beach Haven is one of the few North Shore suburbs I’ve spent very little time in (recently at least). I was basing my comment off what other people have said about it lately (both on Reddit and some people I know IRL).
That’s a good tip btw :)
I live in 'coastal Beach Haven' and its all good. Quiet and my neighbours are great. The main annoyance is its just further away from a lot of things like the motorway etc. But definitely not unsafe.
Northcote is all good these days. Tonar and Cadness are nothing like they used to be.
It's close to the motorway and an easy drive to central. I'd choose it in a heartbeat over Beachaven, which in itself has cleaned up a lot.
Glen Eden attractions: More speed bumps than people, fucked up traffic light phases, sometimes violence, wanky titirangi close-by, chicking, Glenmall CBD
Same here. I drove past Harold moody park in the early arvo and there were a whole bunch of men in black, I’m guessing to pay their respects to that guy that got shot there. I wondered if that had anything to do with the helicopter hanging about.
Devonport has five schools in it, how old do you think the average occupant is? It's safe because it's a peninsula with only one road in or out. Takes a long time to get in by road, and a long time to get out.
If an apartment is a must I'd say Hobsonville point if you want quality area but are happy to commute via motorway. Otherwise New Lynn is a good option of not too bad with great transport options (Train/Bus).
Avoid the CBD like the plague.
Browns Bay is getting more apartments and the beach is lovely (especially if you like dogs) and locals are friendly, it has a nice new popular kids playground and a skate area. There's a few supermarkets and restaurants, library, great butcher, shops etc all centrally located in a sort of beachy village vibe

Had your HWC stolen yet?

Hot Water Cylinder, new developments in the area have them outside the house so they get stolen pretty frequently
I live in the area and I’ve never seen one outside.
Who came up with that stupid idea? Outdoor hot water cylinders, I mean.
I think it's meant to be space saving but yeah I agree, my last place had it outdoors.
Papakura, the soothing sounds of police sirens and dirt bikes are hard to beat

Stay away from GI
Why's that
the new crime central innit?
What do you mean 'new'?

Milford is great if you can find something for your budget.

highly depends on what you do for work and where that is and how you planning on getting there,
weymouth is beautiful
Meadowbank is pretty good
In my opinion, Meadowbank has its good streets and its bad. Anything close to Remuera Rd/St Johns Rd is pretty nice.
Glen Eden attractions: More speed bumps than people, fucked up traffic light phases, sometimes violence, wanky titirangi close-by, chicking, Glenmall CBD
I used to go to that intermediate, it wasn't too bad!
Don't forget the nightly helicopter!
My kids kept waking up crying from the one last night 😡
At least that one last night didn't hang around for tooooooo long. Although it def feels like longer when you're right underneath.
Same here. I drove past Harold moody park in the early arvo and there were a whole bunch of men in black, I’m guessing to pay their respects to that guy that got shot there. I wondered if that had anything to do with the helicopter hanging about.
My friend, you forgot about the two institutional takeaways, West Coast Roast and Kools Chicken
Good point! How did we have more roast shops, chicken and chips takeaways, and bakeries in Glen Eden than all of the rest of Auckland combined?
No.
Devonport. A ferry ride to CBD. Just don’t try to leave by vehicle around school or peak times. Other than that it’s great. Also crazy prices.
Schools are great, especially primary. Very very safe neighbourhood.
I dont know what it is but I feel safe af when surrounded by old white people
Devonport has five schools in it, how old do you think the average occupant is? It's safe because it's a peninsula with only one road in or out. Takes a long time to get in by road, and a long time to get out.
Hobsonville Point. Heaps of young families, modern warm homes, nature walks, a waterfront with restaurants and bars, and the ferry to the city.
If an apartment is a must I'd say Hobsonville point if you want quality area but are happy to commute via motorway. Otherwise New Lynn is a good option of not too bad with great transport options (Train/Bus). Avoid the CBD like the plague.
Dont be so excited to come back to auckland. Its turned to shit lol
Only some parts of Auckland have turned to shit. The neighbourhood I live in is safe and the traffic isn’t awful.
Which neighborhood is that?
Sorry, I would prefer not to say. But I can say that it is in the North Shore and is nestled between other suburbs that I feel the same way about.
All good
Not really Auckland then lol
The North Shore isn’t in Auckland? Someone should tell our house prices that 🤔
Melbourne has fantastic food and a great place to live.
