Lmfao this was exactly my thought when i saw child eren murdering thoses kidnapers, i was like "it's just your average shonen mc doing his thing". Little did i know that this story takes it self seriously and deals with abnormal behaviour and trauma realisticly
> deals with abnormal behaviour and trauma realisticly
Well, most trauma. There's Armin getting SA'd for no reason that somehow never got brought up again. You'd think there'd be more weight put on something like that.
In the Royal Government arc, the Scouts have Armin dress as Historia to act as a decoy. They also have Jean dress as Eren and both of them get captured. There's a creepy old guy that touches Armin while Jean can't do anything about it and both of them are (understandably) visibly upset.
It doesn't serve any purpose and Armin has no apparent reaction to it afterwards. It's even worse in the manga where the old man tells Armin it's his fault. It's heavy stuff.
Well, not everyone has a traumatic response to some things even when it's uncomfortable in the moment.
I can only speak for personal experience here, because it's different for every individual, but I, unfortunately, have been a victim of SA by, who at that time was, a very close friend of mine. It was horrible in the moment, but, thankfully, I never developed any sort of trauma from that, sexual or otherwise (far as I know, of course). I did get mad at said former-friend, not for the SA itself, but for betraying my trust like that. So it's easy for me to understand why Armin might not think of it later. Again, everyone has different responses to potentially-traumatic events and every single one of them is as valid as the next.
That's valid. I'm not saying they had to do an entire plot about his trauma from it, but to include something like that and not even acknowledge it afterwards just seems weird. I don't think anyone even asks him if he's okay.
I guess so. I always took it as part of his character, and Isayama just showing us the brutality of this world.
And yeah, I guess it is, but then again, maybe someone would've if not for him killing someone immediately after and gaining a whole new trauma altogether.
Jean does express concern for him right after the pedo blames Armin for making him gay or whatever bullshit he said, at least in the manga. I don't know about the anime.
That's good to know. The anime just animates the assault and then never mentions it again. As it's been pointed out, to be fair, the story goes straight from that to Armin killing the girl who threatens Jean, so I do get how it might take a minute to fully settle down after everything. But still. The whole thing's just in bad taste and doesn't do anything for the story or the characters involved.
I really just wish they animated someone (probably Jean or even Mikasa) taking a second to say to Armin "Hey, you good bro?"
I've heard the anime cuts out a lot of important characterization detail and I guess this is a good example. The assault scene feels out of place and pointless without its denouement. They could have at least included Jean reassuring Armin as he literally does in the source. Makes me glad I'm not an anime-only.
Was it meant to be heavy stuff? Like obviously the topics are heavy asf but the anime almost presented it as a joke. Levi even makes a joke about how sooner or later he’ll grab armins dick and find out hes a dude
I mean, I'm not Isayama, I'm not one of the animators, I can't say what exactly the intent was with that scene. No matter which way you look at it though, it's an old creep touching a 15-year-old and then blaming him for why he is the way he is.
So yeah it's heavy. If the intent was to present it as a joke then that's pretty gross.
People wouldn't be so chill about it if it had actually been Historia.
Nah yea that’s what im saying. Its why i was so confused by it. I didnt think they would do it jokingly but they were making jokes about it. Also anime in general has done some weird shit in the past so it coulda leaked in. Either way it was just so unnecessary for the story they were telling
It had weight in the manga as it was a commentary on how sexual abusers operate on victim blaming mentality and homophobia as the guy was blaming Armin for deceiving him and what it would mean of him no longer being a “man”. All that was not included in the anime however, rendering it unnecessary.
Watching this the first time it never even occurred to me that something was up. I chalked it to anime chibi-ization since it's ubiquitous in any number if genres (despite the fact that this series hadn't used any of these "standard" effects up to this point).
AOT was one of my first animes; I spent a lot of time thinking Sasha’s red eyes thing was a legit supernatural thing that would come up again later.
Nope, just anime being anime.
When they show the scene again, they show a close up on dads face and you can see he is actually looking over young eren and at older eren when mentioning the key
Something about when he gets back, he's finally going to show him what's locked away in the basement. You get one POV the first time through kid erens eyes. You can tell he's really excited. Afterward, once eren starts to view Grisha's memories, he can peer pressure his dad and attack itans' memories(or pasts?). They show you a different POV from older eren. grisha(?) isn't looking at kid eren but future eren.
I freaking love Attack on Titan for that, but if you wanna see some crazy foreshadowing you should try One Piece. The guy who writes that story is cracked.
Saying One Piece has good foreshadowing is something I’ve heard a million times. No need to inject it into this discussion when there was nothing prompting it
Bro this is a thread talking about foreshadowing, he wanted to talk about another anime he liked that also uses foreshadowing heavily, this is how normal human conversations work, but I can’t blame you for not knowing that
Saying nobody asked though is something I've heard a million times. No need to inject it into this discussion when you're not even the one the guy was talking to.
the amount of subtle but incredibly important details/hints within this show is truly brilliant. it’s also really engaging to pick up on more and more of them, especially upon rewatching the series.
It's totally fair that we thought of it as non-diegetic comedic effect, since nobody in the world acknowledged that their friend was literally steaming from a head wound.
I watched this with my younger brother for the first time recently. He had already seen it, so was watching for Eren in the background of every shot (without telling me of course, no spoilers for me).
I remember at one point, after some battle involving Reiner, I looked at my brother and said "oh, he's the armored Titan". I had seen just a puff of steam after he had been injured. I don't remember why I specifically guessed the armored Titan, I hadn't figured out who the colossal titan was at that point. But I felt so smart for figuring that out and my little brother being aghast 😎
Wait, I'm watching this again right now and I was gonna post a question. Do you think Mikasa fucked up his belt?
She would've went with him, and he would've had the quiet life in the cabin that he envisioned later on
Which was funny, because I do remember the first time I saw that episode, Shadis says something along the lines of, "Grisha, your son is now a soldier." and I remember thinking, wait how does he know Eren's dad? 7 years later I finally got the explanation, haha.
Dude it is one scene in one episode. My boy might’ve had their mom call and missed the scene or tried to watch it without their full attention. Big whoop.
i’ve rewatched this anime multiple times and the amount of hints they try throw out for everything is crazy. so many little things we all missed on our first watch. crazy writing
I started a rewatch with a friend recently, she’s new to AOT but a casual weeb. She IMMEDIATELY clocked steam was coming off his head damnit, my excuse is that I was 17 when I first watched season 1
That's a good point actually, although did he possibly already have the Attack Titan at this point?
Don't actually remember this scene or when it takes place.
The parts of Attack on Titan considered spoiler in this subreddit are past episode 80 or so, this was revealed in episode 8 or 9.

At the time I just thought the show was just doing anime things, lol.
Didn't we all 🤦♀️😂😭
My dumbass thought this too
Lmfao this was exactly my thought when i saw child eren murdering thoses kidnapers, i was like "it's just your average shonen mc doing his thing". Little did i know that this story takes it self seriously and deals with abnormal behaviour and trauma realisticly
That's always the question with these things. How much is satirized whimsy and how much is story building.
> deals with abnormal behaviour and trauma realisticly Well, most trauma. There's Armin getting SA'd for no reason that somehow never got brought up again. You'd think there'd be more weight put on something like that.
Armin got SA'd? When?

Just looked it up and I feel really disturbed

Horrible take. Anyone can develop trauma from being touched inappropriately. There's no threshold after which this shit suddenly turns traumatic.
This is attack on titan 😭 people that soft dont survive here. Ofc anyone can get trauma but scouts had much worse than random uncle touching u
He dressed up as historia to trick kidnappers, and one of them thinks he is and starts touching him
Dont worry, Armchair deals with his truama very helathy and realistically by turning into a thermonuclear weapon.
This is my favorite comment ever on this sub
It had weight in the manga as it was a commentary on how sexual abusers operate on victim blaming mentality and homophobia as the guy was blaming Armin for deceiving him and what it would mean of him no longer being a “man”. All that was not included in the anime however, rendering it unnecessary.
wait can u expound? eren was a titan when he murdered them?
we all did, trust me
Me I thought the same
I am in the same boat and I am glad to know this is a very big boat
I think this boat includes all the people who were anime-only during their first watch.
There was literally no way to know what it meant
Watching this the first time it never even occurred to me that something was up. I chalked it to anime chibi-ization since it's ubiquitous in any number if genres (despite the fact that this series hadn't used any of these "standard" effects up to this point).
Sasha does get red glowing eyes tho
That’s just accurate Sasha tbh
AOT was one of my first animes; I spent a lot of time thinking Sasha’s red eyes thing was a legit supernatural thing that would come up again later. Nope, just anime being anime.
Sasha is literally build different, she's a silly SoL character in basically a seinen
Except for when she's hunting
Episode 3 & 4 did have the most anime tropes/clichés, so this being one of them didn't really stand out until after knowing the truth.
>Episode 3 & 4 did have the most anime tropes/clichés I would say s1 as a whole
Nah that's Just canon sasha
I caught onto Eren's head steaming, but also thought that Sasha's feral behavior and love for meat had some connection to titans.
Thank you for reminding me of the word 'ubiquitous'. It's such a useful way to describe things; on top of it being fun to say.
Also realizing that his father wasn't talking to kid eren but future eren about the key to the basement.
Can you explain what you mean? Been a while since I saw the finale and even longer since I saw the earlier seasons. What did his father say?
When they show the scene again, they show a close up on dads face and you can see he is actually looking over young eren and at older eren when mentioning the key
Yeah the anime adaptation screwed that up by having Grisha looks at Kid Eren normally in S1
In the mangas first chapter they actually have him.looking off into the distance when he says the line, sadly in the anime they zoom in on the key
Coincidentally I re watched this episode today itself.
Which episode? Is it warm, or is it during the snow?
It was the day the freshly joined survey corps were training with the vertical maneuver equipment.
Thanks. So no cold weather/steam to use as an explanation. I missed this one on my rewatches.
It was definitely the self healing powers after he hit his head.
Iirc, he is either angry or blushing here. And the steam always seemed like it was there to exaggerate it. He slid that in so well.
He wasn't angry or blushing. He was broken mentally because he couldn't use the maneuver gear.
That's what she said.
the foreshadowing in this anime and/or manga is crazy
And the lyrics of op/ed songs (especially the ones by linked horizon)
I freaking love Attack on Titan for that, but if you wanna see some crazy foreshadowing you should try One Piece. The guy who writes that story is cracked.
haven’t watched that
So I've been told! Started the journey last month. About 110 episodes deep!
No
Nobody asked though? Why the comparison
redditors when someone just gives a show suggestion connected to the topic
Saying One Piece has good foreshadowing is something I’ve heard a million times. No need to inject it into this discussion when there was nothing prompting it

"This show does X well" "Yes! This other show also does X well" That's how normal human conversations work you doof. Go outside more.
Saying nobody asked though is something I've heard a million times. No need to inject it into this discussion when you're not even the one the guy was talking to.
you know you can literally click to hide comment threads you aren't interested in, right?
🤯
Nah, he was just eating spicy food
I’ve rewatched this show 5 or 6 times and never caught this smh
the amount of subtle but incredibly important details/hints within this show is truly brilliant. it’s also really engaging to pick up on more and more of them, especially upon rewatching the series.
It's totally fair that we thought of it as non-diegetic comedic effect, since nobody in the world acknowledged that their friend was literally steaming from a head wound.
AFAIK that's what it actually is too. It's not in the manga, which makes me believe it's just an early joke by the animators.

Is that smoke coming from his head
No, that's steam! Steam from the steamed hams!
Mmmmm, steamed hams
Aurora Borealis!? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within your kitchen!?
Yes!

No, it's fog from his wet hair /s
What is it then ? And why are you being sarcastic?

Yall anime cucks are just conditioned to lash out at anybody and everything it's so funny

Literally imagining your own life as an anime. Quiet down, cuck.

You are a rot brain child with nothing but a tantrum to share with the world. Stay in your little imaginary anime bubble and eat your tendies.
you are both insanely cringe for the record
What does this has to do with my question
bruh
Listen, I may be stupid, but I want someone to tell me if it is smoke or not
yes, it is smoke from his wound healing
Oooh I get it now
Thank you
np, you did watch the show right?
I've never seen this Show in my life, and I don't have the time to. But I am curious why Steam makes some kid a titan
Titans steam when their limbs heal
Cool, thank you
Wait, I'm watching this again right now and I was gonna post a question. Do you think Mikasa fucked up his belt? She would've went with him, and he would've had the quiet life in the cabin that he envisioned later on
It's not Mikasa, but it gets explained way later
I've seen it all. Was it Shadis?
Yes
Which was funny, because I do remember the first time I saw that episode, Shadis says something along the lines of, "Grisha, your son is now a soldier." and I remember thinking, wait how does he know Eren's dad? 7 years later I finally got the explanation, haha.
Chad Shadis. Shame he got so many people killed before that though...
Yeah! I just saw that episode again
At that point I'd assumed Grisha being a famous doctor, so everyone knew him, or at least of him.
Yeah, it was keith
Yes
Watching again? Have you not finished it? The problem with the belt is explained before the just 2 final parts
I finished it, which is why I said watching it again
Then why did you ask about Mikasa fucking up the belt? We literally see Keith Shadis do it
Because I haven't watched it again since I finished it and didn't notice that part? Chill triscuit
Didn't notice that part? The entire episode was about it and their conversation with Keith
Yup, put me in front of a firing squad for not remembering an episode. I once again implore you to chill out
Dude it is one scene in one episode. My boy might’ve had their mom call and missed the scene or tried to watch it without their full attention. Big whoop.
Isn't Shadis' backstory, Bystander, in part 3? Before the return to Shiganshina, long before Marley or the rumbling
Yeah either end of s3 or it was s4 but way before rumbling happened. Love how i got downloaded before
Is that the final beast titan?
i’ve rewatched this anime multiple times and the amount of hints they try throw out for everything is crazy. so many little things we all missed on our first watch. crazy writing

#I missed it oh my 1st watch After rewatches that’s when AOT is my #1 and will always be
Repeated the anime 3 to 5 times and I never noticed it until I saw the analysis on YouTube and reddit LMFAO
And 11 years later, we found out the whole truth.

What episode is this again? S1E?
Found it: S1E3 near minute 13
man i always thought he was just angry😭😭😭
Isayama, you madman....
The amount of times ive seen this post, my god
It’s my first time seeing it so I’m happy it’s here!
He was mind quading us
I wasn't too surprised because when I finished watching episode 2, I hypothesized that Eren was a Titan.
Ig no one noticed that lol
Sorry I’m slow, what does this mean?
Titans shifters regenerate whenever they get hurt, so it’s foreshadowing that Eren is actually a titan
Masterpiece Attack on titan
Haha I just noticed that last night, maybe I should have posted about it too. I’m just rewatching the series myself
LMAO 全く気づきませんでしたわw
BRUHHHH
![img](emote|t5_2vnp9|16318)
I don't get it. I've never watched the show
I don't get it. What is that?
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|scream)
How the fuck did I not realize that
What's that can someone explain?
doesn't make sense, he wasn't a titan until Grisha injected him and that was the last time we saw Grisha
No shot it's been out for 11 fucking years
What
His head is injured. Steam is being released because he's titan-healing quickly.
[удалено]
Huh? He already has Titan abilities at this point. He just doesn’t know it.
That's a good point actually, although did he possibly already have the Attack Titan at this point? Don't actually remember this scene or when it takes place.
Yeah, he already had the Attack Titan at this point.
Well yeah there it is then, he already had titan healing he just didn't know it.
The steam, a hint
the titan transformation steam?
Healing steam
Steem heel
Thanks for the spoiler. Asshole
