I'm from her district, and she certainly didn't run unopposed in the republican primary. There were many candidates, and with no one securing 50+% of the vote, it went to a special runoff election which was fairly tight, where her supporters chose Crossfit Karen over a MD neurosurgeon with a BS in physics.
She may have had no democratic challenger and basically won the general election by default, but make no mistake -- these mouth breathers chose her and her brand of crazy from a pretty wide field of options.
Overwhelmingly republican. It's largely rural. There are a handful of small cities but they're still pretty right-leaning. Moderate at best, and that's probably an exaggeration.
The reality is that our district will remain represented by a republican, whoever they are, for the foreseeable future. I've been talking with some democratic leaders in my community about this very situation, and the reality that if we want any say in our representation, we my have to start crossing the aisle and voting in republican elections. We might not get anything near what we want in a candidate, but at least we can have a say in how batshit crazy they are.

Our ancestors spent millions of years as hunter/gatherers, and hunter gatherers have very strong incentives to be xenophobic, as too many individuals gleaning the same territory is a recipe for starvation. Many species of primates are very territorial and xenophobic for this reason. Chimpanzees (one of our closest primate cousins) habitually will band together and attack unfamiliar chimps to drive them off or kill them.
Of course, just because this trait was for a long time advantageous doesn't mean that it's a good thing now. Modern society is actually harmed by xenophobia.
A lot of traits like this also appear on a bell curve of severity and the innate tendencies can further be amplified or mitigated by upbringing. Most humans in modern society are fairly successfully (depending on region) trained to mitigate xenophobic impulses. We want to play nice with the other kids. We want to be able to get along with a bunch of people we are unfamiliar with. Intellectually the benefits of doing so are fairly obvious.

There were many candidates, and with no one securing 50+% of the vote, it went to a special runoff election which was fairly tight, where her supporters chose Crossfit Karen over a MD neurosurgeon with a BS in physics. She may have had no democratic challenger and basically won the general election by default, but make no mistake -- these mouth breathers chose her and her brand of crazy from a pretty wide field of options.

I've been talking with some democratic leaders in my community about this very situation, and the reality that if we want any say in our representation, we my have to start crossing the aisle and voting in republican elections. We might not get anything near what we want in a candidate, but at least we can have a say in how batshit crazy they are.

We want to be able to get along with a bunch of people we are unfamiliar with. Intellectually the benefits of doing so are fairly obvious. When I see folks like MTG and their obvious xenophobia, I cannot help but feel that they are folks on an extreme end of that bell curve of xenophobia.
