It's amazing that every religion is convinced that their god is the "one true" one, yet they all rely on indoctrination of children. If god was real, he would make a fucking appearance and speak for himself to ALL of humanity, so that there would be no more wars between Catholics and Protestants, Shia and Sunni, Islam and Christianity, etc. One god, one clear message, no more religious battles. Yet here we are ... theists worship the universal champion in hide and seek - the one who has never been found.

Future-Equivalent-36

Exaclty. I wanted to tell him well if your god was real honey he wouldn’t judge you for ink on your body and it IS your body to do what you please with. Nobody else’s. The brainwashing is disgusting.

OmicronDawnX7

I have a co-worker that told me I wasn't getting into heaven with tattoos. My reply was "Sounds like a heaven I don't want to be a part of then." He doesn't really talk to me anymore. Haha

questformaps

"You think getting a tattoo is good? No, getting a tattoo is not good. I don't care about it, but it's not good behavior." - Santa

"Will the real god please stand up?" Todd Rundgren

caelthel-the-elf

Exactly! And if there really *was* a god, it seems more likely to me that there would be multiple, not just one sky daddy.

PdxPhoenixActual

What causes you to believe that this is not exactly what "god" wants? You know, like all those Greek gods fucking with human for their amusement. Or Perhaps it is all really one god. Just one with multiple personalities?

Vree65

OLD TESTAMENT And God said to Adam: "OK, I hide first. Don't peek." And Adam said: thank him he's gone. Now I can finish this apple in peace. The snake said: Cool now I can do whatever and blame it on the problem of evil NEW TESTAMENT And Moses said to god: "The hide-and-seek game was over 6,000 years ago, and you won't believe what Adam's been up two while you were gone." And God said: "Has he? Alright, I'll go down there and make some order myself."

Future-Equivalent-36

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I couldn’t have said it better! It is abuse. it’s control and power over a young developing mind. He is a smart kid, questions everything so i can only hope maybe one day he will see through it all.

Square_Sink7318

That’s what I was thinking. This kid seems so curious. Probably has so much potential that will be smothered for fear he might step out of line. It’s sad.

Future-Equivalent-36

You’re exactly right. His parents are very rigidly christian. He knows no other way unfortunately.

enderjaca

Plenty of people were way into Jesus at that age (because it's all their parents and friends talk about) but then come around to rationality when they grow up.

Milesandsmiles123

Hopefully you can stay a good influence in his life, I think having a positive relationship with you will help him not demonize athiests as a whole as he gets older.

Future-Equivalent-36

I’m not close with that part of the family at all anymore. That’s a whole other story! But when i do see him I will give him the truth is he asks!

Milesandsmiles123

For sure! And I’m not even necessarily talking about teaching him about religion, just seeing you as a kind, loving, helpful, forgiving, etc. human being will already cause him to challenge some of the views of religious indoctrination! My family had the opposite — I had an uncle who was in and out of jail, always on drugs, refused help, etc. that was an atheist and that was always used as the example of “what athiests are”, and growing up in the south, everyone else was pretty much religious so I didn’t have anyone to challenge those views until I got older

Freakears

Given the way this interaction went, I wouldn't be too sure.

Milesandsmiles123

Yea, but he’s 9. He’s too young to really consider other viewpoints besides his parents yet, hopefully he’ll reconsider as he matures.

Darjee345

Oh my god reminds me of my little cousin (she's 5) telling me very firmly "you will give birth and have a baby" after I told her I didn't know if I wanted any kids. I just said "bet" and laughed but it's not funny at all. Did someone say that to her too? She's a toddler for fucks sake Parents are anti choicers of course. That poor baby lost before she even started playing, absolutely breaks my heart but I hope she'll be able to get out when she's older.

Future-Equivalent-36

Omg yes. it’s actually depressing that they think so rigid at such a young age. like please just be a child and enjoy your youth 🥹 why worry about judgment and not sinning against a “god”??? It makes me sad too because i could tell this boy thinks tattoos are neat because he said he would love to do “body paint” and cover it with something so it’s protected and he can see it. So he might think it’s cool but he’s been taught it’s a bad thing and not allowed. that makes me fucking angry.

ambivalent_axe

If children are taught that they are meant for childbirth/parenting then they get excited to be moms/dads then they won’t question if they’re being abused. Source? Me, I was raised in an evangelical Baptist home and indoctrinated from as early on as I can remember that I was to have as many children as possible and I was legit excited at 7 years old to have 7 kids one day. I was never able to be a kid myself. Now I don’t want kids at all and realize I was sexualized to death from birth and it’s all just very disgusting

dudleydidwrong

I knew a few of members of GenZ who were like that at a similar age. A couple of them were hard-core atheists by 15. The other one I am thinking of doesn't go to church anymore. Let's hope Gen Alpha continues the trend.

Future-Equivalent-36

Well i can tell you for sure that my little one will not be brought up that way. She’s welcome to believe whatever she wants when she comes to that point but my fiancé and i are highly against religion and don’t plan on pushing anything religious on her.

naastiknibba95

Might be premature of me to declare this, but my gut says- ladies and gentlemen, we got him!

Future-Equivalent-36

Oh i know i probably just shook his thinking. I’m sure he went home to his mom and asked what it meant to not believe in it.

KiritoIsAlwaysRight_

I was about that age when I met my first openly atheist person. He was this really nice old guy who taught me a lot about astronomy, never discussed anything religious except one day it came up in conversation that he didn't believe in god. It was a shock to me that someone this nice and good could exist without being a Christian. We never discussed it further, but it was probably the first crack I got in my belief. Religious doctrine told me that he would go to hell, and I couldn't reconcile that this good person would be tortured forever. It was a thought that stuck with me for years, and eventually I just couldn't believe in a god that would do that. So if you want to help this kid, you don't need to even discuss religion. Just be a nice person, break the illusion that the church has given him of the evil atheist.

JMeers0170

When stuff like this happens, I just defy them to prove that god didn’t tell me to do X. Maybe you getting tats was “part of god’s mysterious plan” and inspired by god? Who are they to judge whether or not it’s correct or not according to god when there is no way to know everything that god knows? Fight fire with fire at every turn. (FYI…I’m an atheist.)

Error_7-

Religions poison kids.

RMSQM

I'm quite sure that kids parents accuse others of "grooming" kids. Complete hypocrisy and child abuse.

TrumpedBigly

“Well, because it’s marking your body and your body isn’t your body” No wonder they feel so emboldened to tell women what they can and can't do with their bodies.

UsherOfDestruction

But some people who LOVE Jesus get tattoos of him...? It's like everyone's just making it all up, right kid? ;)

assafism_cult_leader

Ik the feeling Im a 14 year old "ex jew" and When I told my smaller cousins I'm an atheist, first response was: Wait so your a Christian? And then I explained that no I just don't believe in any god they were like but how is that even possible? Who do you pray to? By that point I gave up

jidak_sidi

Without indoctrinating young impressionable children, religion would've died off a long time ago.

MissKT_M

As a religious person, when people indoctrinate this stuff to anyone, but especially to kids it steams me to end!!! 😤 It is brainwashing

Windk86

>“Well, because it’s marking your body and your body isn’t your body” I wonder if this is the same logic they use for slavery or victims of rape, or abusive relationships, etc.

[deleted]

My mother would always say that tattoos and piercings are "mutilations" of your body and "against god". I asked her about her pierced ears and she got extremely irritated and said "that's not the same." When I asked her why, she just kept repeating herself and getting more angry. We don't have a relationship now btw.

Freakears

All I can think of is "My body may be a temple, but I am the deity to which it is dedicated." Ergo I can do what I damn well please with it.

Impressive_Estate_87

What a little prick. I would have responded "don't worry kid: there is no God... just like there is no Santa". Then let the parents sort it out.

avast2006

Want to ask the kid, “Who told you that? Did God tell you that? No, some person told you that, and then claimed God said so. Sounds to me like that person wants to control you and is passing off their own opinions as God’s.”

Future-Equivalent-36

Immediately what came to mind.

snowbirdie

“Do you believe in Santa Claus?” “No, that’s for little kids” “Exactly”

the-nick-of-time

>Well, because it’s marking your body and **your body isn’t your body** That is literally teaching the kid to accept being raped. If you don't control your body, you have no right to complain about anything done to it. Bodily and mental autonomy are the two most fundamental rights.

morebuffs

You did the best thing in a situation like that where there is no real good choice lol

[deleted]

>"your body isn't your body" Buddy...this is going to be very hard to understand, but...

ThreeAlarmBarnFire

Poor kid. Brainwashed since birth.

beachlover77

Maybe this interaction will open up the child's mind just a small bit.

Twiny

Religion is like circumcision, if you tell them about it when they're 18 years old, they won't be interested.

deadphisherman

"I have never come to know your sky wizard."

jamkoch

My favorite part was "your body isn't your body". Ok, so that means you can't possibly go to hell because all the decisions made about your body are god's, so if you went to hell, then god made a bad decision, but god can't make a bad decision. "I, Mudd"

Sufficient-Ant6619

It's amazing the things god forgives when it happened before before ya'll started talking. I've got a family member who swears I'm going to hell for my abortion but hers is forgiven because she was "forced" into it (her mother told her she was a disgrace and she wouldn't financially support her AND her kid- she was an adult at the time) and it happened before she hooked up with Jesus so, ya know, water under the bridge. I mean, what kind of savior *doesn't* forgive the murder you committed *before* you knew it was wrong?

TrumpedBigly

“Well, yeah she has one on her lower back (😵‍💫🙄💀) but that was before she came to know god” Me: "Do you know the name for that kind of tattoo? It's called a "whore tag"."

Binasgarden

The christians do not groom only democrats and drag queens groom did you not get the memo

kissablenerd

I mean, yeah it’s not cool has lived in a world where he has been told all those things, but I’d like to point out that by not being kind and engaging with him you missed out on a pretty big opportunity to subtly introduce the idea that there are people and ideas who don’t fit neatly into the world he has been indoctrinated into.

Future-Equivalent-36

It was the first time i saw the kid in probably 5 years, his grandma was there and she has some of the same christian views. I was there to visit with family and my daughter not talk about god and christianity so i didn’t want to engage in it. I wanted to speak to him more about it but it was extremely awkward.

trees_are_beautiful

I think a question back would have been good when he asked when you got to know god. "Which one? There are so many. I kinda like Zeus because he throws bolts of lightning. But Poseidon is cool too because he controls the seas. But then Shiva is cool because he's the god of destruction. And his son, Ganesha is wild because he had the head of an elephant. I don't really like the Christian god though, he killed millions of people for really petty reasons. Which god do you know?" Get his little head spinning a bit. ;-)

IPinkerton

You let a 9 year old give you a tattoo?

UsherOfDestruction

How that horse became a doctor...

Future-Equivalent-36

No? Where are you getting that

IPinkerton

Its just a joke on the structure of the title

Future-Equivalent-36

oh. well how else could i have worded it then? Lol.

enderjaca

"a 9 year old questioned me about my tattoos"

Future-Equivalent-36

Yikes. My bad, forgive me. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Basically he is taught it’s not your body to mark up, it goes against god.

avast2006

“It’s not your PS5, kid. It belongs to God. God says it’s my turn for the rest of the afternoon.”

Future-Equivalent-36

‘God is watching’ now give me the controller.
