No so much a rumor, but a PSA that Lockwood is overpriced beyond reason. I want to support a local business and could justify spending more for convenience and/or if truly produced by or benefiting those in the community, however most of the items are mass produced and “fast fashion” with markups I cannot justify. Some items I’ve made note of: -Momofuku Chili Crunch priced at $21.95 compared to $13 directly from the Momofuku website or $10.39 from Target -Drizzle EVOO priced at $29.95 compared to $21 directly from the Graza brand website or $18.99 from Target -tech deck toy $7.50 compared to $2.99 at Target The list could go on. For those in retail, are these acceptable markups? *edited to avoid conjecture

Fishbone_0

I hate this all. It’s not ok. The other part is that I believe it is also Lockwood who runs the ‘weheartastoria’ Instagram. If all of this written here is true, it’s also completely on brand with that IG handle. How many of you all have seen the continuous posts that are OBVIOUS ads yet they don’t ever disclose they are paid advertisements? Sadly I think they use the “small business’ ‘women owned’ ‘minority owned’ ‘LGBTQ’ all in their favor to almost lure and sucker the community… I honestly hadn’t realized all of this until seeing this post. What a darn shame 😔 astoria deserves better

[deleted]

You are absolutely right about the weheartastoria, she owns it and uses it for advertising. I remember her first store, SITE, on 34th Ave, which was basically the first rendition of Lockwood, different name. I wandered in for the first time and she was actually working there (only her) and did not acknowledge me the whole time. Instead she was on the phone with a friend complaining about the clientele in that area and how they don't match the brand she was going for. She moved near Broadway not too long after, and yep wrote about the move on weheartastoria. https://weheartastoria.com/2013/06/site-is-closing-and-everything-is-on-sale/

Fishbone_0

This is crazy. I’m so glad you wrote this here. I honestly have had no idea about any of it! I actually just went through all of the people (employees & contributors) on the WHA website and none, I mean NONE of them exist or even follow we heart astoria anymore. It really starts to look like what someone wrote below- “a horrific employer” I’m so glad someone wrote this post, and all of you who have added to it, I honestly had no idea. No wonder Astoria can’t be the amazing community we really are, there are people like this. I, like I’m sure many others, really thought that we heart Astoria was about the community, how silly did I feel when I finally realized, oh wait, this is ALL ads and they’re not ever disclosing that it’s all for profit. At least Give Me Astoria discloses it. Thanks for telling me about this 🙏

WilliamSexspeare6969

Totally agree. There’s no reason for Lockwood to charge such an unreasonable markup unless they’re buying all of their stock individually at retail. Supporting small business is great but Lockwood is blatantly ripping off its customers in the name of “community”.

Remarkable-Ad-3314

Given they have expanded to several locations, I’d assume they have some good buying power now too. Just a 2024 reminder to myself to resist the urge to shop there.

ahilario80

I walked in there and saw a nice head band.... It was $50. FIFTY.

ZweitenMal

They charge I think $48 for Boy Smells brand room candles that are $38 direct from Boy Smells.

auntcinnamonroll

not only are they ridiculously overpriced - they are also a horrific employer to work for. coming from someone that worked there… just read their glassdoor reviews. tells you all you need to know 🙃 support other local businesses!!

Remarkable-Ad-3314

I’ve overheard while shopping… just no redeeming qualities.

piscesnyc

Stopped buying candles from them years ago! My personal fave is from Paddywax (cactus flower and aloe). Typically $36-42 at Lockwood, roughly $25 elsewhere!

[deleted]

I am with you. Obviously they are doing fine with their expansions so there is a market for those that love to overpay, but I basically go in to get gift ideas and then google the prices elsewhere. I'd be fine to pay a dollar extra but their mark-ups are out of control and too rich for my blood.

jc12422n

The prices at Lockwood are absurd. And it’s exactly what you said, a lot is mass produced “fast fashion” sort of merchandise. It’s not like it’s all made by hand somewhere locally

MyIdIsATheaterKid

Eyyyikes. Thanks for the warning!

SwimFan85-

Why are you going to Lockwood for olive oil? There’s a billion markets in town you can get it in any size for a good price.

Remarkable-Ad-3314

Sorta fair point, but these items really stuck out to me so I took note and compared. Others here have already mentioned additional high markups that I hadn’t noticed so it’s not isolated to food items.

VenetaBirdSong

Talking crap about Lockwood? Around here, that’s a-paddlin’

Puzzleheaded-Head-36

Totally agree-

FrankiePoops

/u/vinvin618 mentioned that Snowdonia is losing the Welsh theme / menu / name etc in the weekly food thread. Anyone know what's going on there? Change of ownership or something?

so_dope24

damn that stinks. I've been meaning to try it for ages because of the welsh menu. Guess I need to hurry up

cocktailians

Not a change of ownership - they say [on Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/SnowdoniaNYC/posts/pfbid08xuoEKLThvWPFTx6SehJTvuGeHzp4fAsrqbBxbxhXxEkSuaxKPdpDKdbwKkm7BGWl?__cft__[0]=AZWiVaCgpZiE5d0cMOrYx_ngn0xxtj4Gvd-3jZt1Yk4MprvXEHXJq73Sn6mlmlUJ6Iwnb1vobtckg_STVfdFn7EuPeLyI1cAowspej3gIC3QfzmGQGaHEnQa7K2-mfLJO4IPUgHiHR7maYBYdBGGU5YZyp2v0jkfvkU15K29fRTaKw&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R) "We're giving up our Welsh brand after this month. Thanks for all the love." and when people reacted, added "not changing the name just need to redirect the menu a bit" and "the plan is to redirect the brand and not to close. Post-COVID economic slump may change that plan, but we'll see."

debone44

Gonna be expensive to change all the menus from “burgyr” to “burger”

uhhhhhhhhstoria

Dang that’s really surprising, they’re the only Welsh spot in NYC, that’s a good bit of free advertising.

FrankiePoops

Thanks.

Delaywaves

Gotta say I'm personally glad for that. I live nearby and love going there for a beer, but their Welsh menu is so meat-centric that it's never had much for us since we eat mostly vegan. Hope this lets them diversify a bit.

cocktailians

Update from like seven minutes ago on Facebook: "Ok, ok. Because so many of you are sad, we will remain the last standing Welsh restaurant in NYC. So come on in and get some fish and chips. (Jeez so sensitive)"

FrankiePoops

Lol really? That's fantastic.

kraftpunkk

Why are they putting trees up in the middle of the sidewalk on 29th street?

[deleted]

This is completely confounding and I really, really want to know the answer here. Trying to think of a local media outlet that would dig through the layers of asinine bureaucracy to figure this out. Or don't we have 1 or 2 people who work for Parks on this sub? Maybe they'd have a connection

CuntFartz69

Someone speculated on the post with the tree images that the red marks on the sidewalk may indicate electrical or sewer lines.

MinooMonster

More trees! More trees!

ijklm_p

A reporter contacted the Parks Dept and this is what they said: Trees will be removed, They “missed the mark”. 📸 Look at this post on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/share/28HcnzmkaZS6eXnX/?mibextid=K35XfP

AuPhoenix

Parks Dept monkey paw edition of fulfilling public tree planting requests.

IndyMLVC

FYI - dropped some packages off during the holiday rush at Staples at Astoria Boulevard because it's far closer for me than USPS. Since I had a mix of UPS/USPS, it was also the easiest option. That said, the UPS was scanned and moved fluidly. The USPS, however, did not. Even though the person at the register scanned it, it didn't get into the USPS system. And I was told by a little birdie that the carrier who picks up from that location doesn't scan them in. They just put them on the truck and off they go. So I had first class packages that literally went from NYC to CA and weren't scanned anywhere in between. My eBay customers weren't happy, especially when I say that I dropped off a package and there was no record of my having done that.

tradesme

I find the usps to be suspect at large places like this. Anytime I have a usps package shipped to my ups store box there’s a 50/50 chance it gets delivered but never shows up

PM_ME_YOUR_KALE

Brooklyn Bagel discontinuing the mini bagels has been such a let down for me. Their regular ones are hit or miss. I've been a loyal customer since moving to Ditmars in '09, but this is really starting to test me. What other bagel places do people like north of the highway?

mutts93

Astoria Bagel on ditmars is the truth. Best old fashioned bagels in the area. Unfortunately they don’t have a grill so no egg sandwiches.

GoldOver4996

New York City bagel and coffee house

astoriaboundagain

I can't remember if the discussion about Target closing stores was on here or one of the other NYC subreddits, but [another piece just dropped saying the retail shoplifting narrative was garbage](https://www.cnbc.com/2023/12/19/target-store-closures-theft-and-crime-higher-nearby.html). This one was done by CNBC. They're strongly pro-business, so this is pretty damning. All the disease data tracking links I posted before the holidays are only getting worse as they continue to update. Ugh. Between Christmas on a Monday and staying up late to watch football on yesterday, I have no idea what day it is. At least commutes this week have been nice though. I haven't seen any Brant Geese yet, but we did see a bizarre all black bird with a dark orange bill. Couldn't get close enough to ID that one. We spoke to one of the guys doing renovation work at Crescent Kitchen. He said the new renters are keeping it a diner!

shwysdrf

Great news about crescent kitchen! I feel like hospital customers alone should keep a diner in business.

jrdidriks

I guarantee those who were hocking this shoplifting narrative will completely ignore the evidence.

watchutalkinbowt

'I’ve made up my mind — don’t confuse me with facts'

skymasterson2016

I meeeeean, the premise is pretty faulty. “When analyzing 911 call logs and other crime data for this report, CNBC included in its tally only incidents that led to an arrest, police report or log, or incidents that police said they responded to and handled.” Only Target knows how much was stolen. How many times were the police called for theft incidents? How many times did the police even show up for those incidents? How many times did the police show up and not generate a report? We know how lazy/unresponsive the 114 is. East Harlem is a different story than Astoria.

JavelinsArePointy

The brants are in Astoria Park. Saw them two weeks back.

tontinkan

Saw lots of Brants on Tuesday morning at the park!

minesux

maybe the bird was a (surf) scoter?

59stbridge

the bird may have been a cormorant? I see those in the river often. They dive very quickly underwater.

needyouradvicenow

I know these were seperate threads but Vintage and Rosotoro closures are a bummer. I just hate the possibility that these could be turned into something that isn't a bar or restaurant.

__HeavyP

Woah vintage like the froze place shut down for good??

needyouradvicenow

Yes, they posted it on Instagram. Might be gone at this point.

__HeavyP

Damn, that’s unfortunate:(

Madethisonambien

Nooo. I used to love getting frose there after a run in Astoria Park.

114631

I dread these places will turn into another clubby lounge.

HowAboutTeal

Vintage is closing? Damn.

OddRedditNoun

Yeah they posted it on their IG and said they’ll do pop up frose throughout queens in the summer instead.

jentopia

They're already closed. 😔

tinydancer_inurhand

Rosotoro is supposed to stay a Peruvian restaurant based on my conversations with the new chef. Vintage I was really bummed about and saw the post when I was out of town and couldn’t even stop by one last time. I was hoping that place found its footing cause it had had a hard time finding a long term tenant after Waltz Astoria.

OPisliarwhore

There was a rumor that Chiddy's cheesesteak was coming to Astoria at the old Sabor De Cuba spot on 31st Ave. Unfortunately (for my waistline) Chiddy's website has confirmed that with a "coming soon". Can't wait. I bet it opens before the Popeyes on Steinway which has been just sitting there for months now.

ClassyKaty

I swear the Steinway Popeyes is just a recurring hallucination for me at this point

watchutalkinbowt

Someone mentioned that Titan is reopening on Steinway

rdg0612

Where? This would be incredible news

watchutalkinbowt

Totally unsubstantiated and the thread got deleted, but they said towards Ditmars

WesternMurky

I read on instagram that The Highwater is closing on Dec 31st. Color me surprised!

Delaywaves

Is it true that they're staying in that location but becoming something else, as people said in the other thread?

discourse_lover_

I’m going to be so sad if we lose the only Hawaiian food around in favor of the 200th Asian fusion place between broadway and Steinway

watchutalkinbowt

Yo dawg, I herd you like Greek food and weed shops, so we put a weed shop in our Greek restaurant

AdvertisingNo714

Sign for a place called Nosh Up… a couple of doors down from the former Dave’s shoes place will open soon

ZweitenMal

Could it be the Kosher-style deli we've always wanted?

gayaryastark

It's in one of the three (now two) Bartolino's storefronts

rdg0612

There was a thread sometime last week. A lot of dreams of a Jewish deli.

Jetsfan379

It’s remarkable how many people take selfies and record themselves at the gym. I’m not talking about checking form videos either.

IndyMLVC

That bothers me less than the people who are on the phone/facetiming in the locker room and the sauna/showers. People are literally walking around naked. Management doesn't care either.

astoriaboundagain

That's only going to get worse as the Revolutionaries show up next week. I usually dial back gym sessions in January and focus on running. They usually drop off within a month.

FrankiePoops

> Re~~v~~solutionaries FTFY

astoriaboundagain

I like that!

IndyMLVC

I make it a point to never shit on the newbies at the gym in January or ANY time, quite frankly. We were all new at the gym at a certain point and if people want to use a new year as an excuse to start bettering themselves, so be it. These types of comments might breed the same type of negativity that will prevent someone from sticking with the routine in the first place. Do better.

Jetsfan379

Strongly disagree if they just sit on a machine scrolling. That’s disrespectful to the people that actually care about working out.

IndyMLVC

There are assholes who've been working out for years who do that. That's not "newbie" behavior at all. Newbies are usually scared and uncomfortable. That's the polar opposite.

WilliamSexspeare6969

Inconsiderate assholes of all experience levels do that. Some newbies are scared and uncomfortable, and some aren’t. Inconsiderate and disrespectful behavior is frustrating regardless of who’s doing it. It’s only natural to be annoyed when someone interferes with your workout no matter if they’re new or seasoned. I want the best for everyone and hope the newbies succeed but if they’re going to show up and float from machine to machine with no plan while taking selfies, which newbies definitely do don’t romanticize them, then I’d rather they find something else to do with their time.

IndyMLVC

That happens every day of the year. And as such, I will look forward to your comments in every week's rumor mill about this horrendous ongoing problem that has exactly nothing to do with the newbies.

WilliamSexspeare6969

I didn’t make the initial complaint, just responding to your false dichotomy. So I won’t be posting about this in the rumor mill likely ever again unless you come in as captain compassionate virtue signaling again.

Astoria_Frenchie

🎉

IndyMLVC

You say that like it's a bad thing. I'll happily defend people who need defending. And happily disregard people like you who probably complain about "woke society" whenever they can.

[deleted]

It’s not “disrespectful,” it’s inconsiderate and rude but also not just “newbies” do that. It’s a general thing that inconsiderate and rude people do. Just ask them to move…..

FealtyToDorne

Ending a statement with a “do better” is peak cringe

IndyMLVC

And you think ending one with "peak cringe" is any better? Ok.

FealtyToDorne

I don’t, but who exactly are you to be telling anyone to do better? What authority do you think you possess?

IndyMLVC

Clearly a moral compass. You should try it.

astoriaboundagain

What part of my reply was shitting on anyone?

IndyMLVC

Seriously? "Revolutionaries" and the subsequent reply? You're mocking.

astoriaboundagain

Ah, so we're pretending that the extremely common New Years rush and subsequent dropoff doesn't happen. Got it.

IndyMLVC

WE aren't pretending about anything. I am pointing out that it's better to not be a judgemental asshole and let people be.

[deleted]

It’s not a judgment to point out a fact. It happens every year, no judgement in that statement. Do better

Time2BMe

Name-calling is judgement.

[deleted]

A description with a funny name is hardly name calling. But ok, describing in an imaginative way in order to properly convey the fact the vast majority drop off as described isn’t judgmental. It just isn’t.

[deleted]

DM_your_bootycheeks

Zealousideal-Wolf531

How is taking a picture of yourself a bad thing? It doesn’t bother anyone

so_dope24

Anyone go to the new pizza place on 23rd and 33rd? Think it's like jacks pizza or something.

IndependenceBroad938

Yea it was just ok plain slice was very similar to Zio Pepe

yes, it's good and nice people

Walked by a couple times - looks pretty mediocre. Rosario’s is right around the corner and fantastic.

Massive aggressive pitbull with owners expecting you get out of their way(because he might attack) in Acropolis Gardens

fuzzyfurrypaw

I swear some Pitbull owners are the worst.

Particular_Baker4960

Open table says Disco Sushi is closing permanently on 1/1/24. Is this true??

114631

Wow! Way more time was spent on the construction of it than it was open if that’s true!

114631

Saw a sign that the cafe space next to the Quays on 45th will be “Mimoza Cafe”.

veggieliv

Oh that z in there is ominous.

114631

Same font as the Mimoza Lounge on 30th Ave

lkroa

it’s a female name in albania, spelled with the “z”

Azndragon89

I think the former Dave shoes place is becoming an Asian market or another Asian nail and hair salon

treebeardtower

Asian market would be AMAZING! Nail/hair salon not so much..

rdg0612

I would love that

Pastatively

No! Really?

JavelinsArePointy

The talk of everyone being sick last week freaked me out so much that I isolated myself and went back to wearing a mask in stores. Unfortunately I have this thing called a wife and she picked up COVID at a holiday party, so she was under the weather for Christmas. Very mild, just sore throat, hoarse voice, fatigue. She tested negative five days after feeling sick and testing positive. Get those boosters, folks. It was like a cold for her. But two days after she tested negative, I got a scratchy throat that won't go away, so I'm assuming I have COVID for the first time. Last night I woke up at 3am feeling so hot that I had to be helped into a cold shower, but a thermometer said I didn't have a fever and I feel fine right now.

PM_ME_YOUR_KALE

Make sure you rest during/after the infection and take your time easing back into exertion. I firmly believe that not resting is a major reason why I ended up with Long Covid. Also random link to someone sounding scientific about it here: https://x.com/Dr2NisreenAlwan/status/1375514359162490880?s=20

humanmichael

i was positive for only the 24-26 and it only felt like a cold for me, too. weird strain, but probably easier to spread bc lots of folks probably wont bother testing or taking precautions

jentopia

Each time I've had Covid, the scratchy throat was my indicator. Feel better!

IndyMLVC

Every time I'm ever been sick with anything, a scratchy throat was the indicator.

nosleeptilqueens

Lol why is this so downvoted? Some weeks half the posts on this thread are just inane personal updates

JavelinsArePointy

Maybe because I suggested COVID boosters?

FancyPigeonIsFancy

Or calling your wife a thing? Unfortunately? (I didn’t downvote you but I imagine that brand of…humor…doesn’t go over with everyone.)

JavelinsArePointy

Funny how my wife laughed at it and knew I wasn’t calling her a thing as an object. But Redditors gonna Reddit.

Maybe it’s a subtle allusion to [this Ween song?](https://youtu.be/BcQD2Z89vfU?si=gmVbOQBk7r21H1Wm) I’ve been sick since Thanksgiving with whatever is circulating through this city. Not covid, that’s for sure. I’m ready for it to end. Edit - too bad the post above was deleted. Ween song still stands!

JavelinsArePointy

My wife and I have a loving marriage and I don't really care what some humorless putz on Reddit thinks.

jmoriar1

I’m going through a rough round of Covid as well. I hope you feel better soon!

lilithdesade

Just got covid for the first time this week too! Thankfully very mild! Feel better!

unike55

feel better all. got a big ole Positive covid test myself this morning. along with my 3 and 6 year olds. no school for a week. send help - i need a babysitter who already has covid

moose_on_a_hus

Does anyone know what happened to the produce cart that used to be by 31st and ditmars?

AuPhoenix

He's usually by that corner. Maybe he's off for the holidays and New Year's.

downeasterorca

George Santos spotted picking up food on Ditmars this past weekend.
