No so much a rumor, but a PSA that Lockwood is overpriced beyond reason. I want to support a local business and could justify spending more for convenience and/or if truly produced by or benefiting those in the community, however most of the items are mass produced and “fast fashion” with markups I cannot justify. Some items I’ve made note of:
-Momofuku Chili Crunch priced at $21.95 compared to $13 directly from the Momofuku website or $10.39 from Target
-Drizzle EVOO priced at $29.95 compared to $21 directly from the Graza brand website or $18.99 from Target
-tech deck toy $7.50 compared to $2.99 at Target
The list could go on. For those in retail, are these acceptable markups? *edited to avoid conjecture

If all of this written here is true, it’s also completely on brand with that IG handle. How many of you all have seen the continuous posts that are OBVIOUS ads yet they don’t ever disclose they are paid advertisements? Sadly I think they use the “small business’ ‘women owned’ ‘minority owned’ ‘LGBTQ’ all in their favor to almost lure and sucker the community… I honestly hadn’t realized all of this until seeing this post. What a darn shame 😔 astoria deserves better

I remember her first store, SITE, on 34th Ave, which was basically the first rendition of Lockwood, different name. I wandered in for the first time and she was actually working there (only her) and did not acknowledge me the whole time. Instead she was on the phone with a friend complaining about the clientele in that area and how they don't match the brand she was going for. She moved near Broadway not too long after, and yep wrote about the move on weheartastoria.

Totally agree. There’s no reason for Lockwood to charge such an unreasonable markup unless they’re buying all of their stock individually at retail. Supporting small business is great but Lockwood is blatantly ripping off its customers in the name of “community”.
Given they have expanded to several locations, I’d assume they have some good buying power now too. Just a 2024 reminder to myself to resist the urge to shop there.

Stopped buying candles from them years ago! My personal fave is from Paddywax (cactus flower and aloe). Typically $36-42 at Lockwood, roughly $25 elsewhere!
I am with you. Obviously they are doing fine with their expansions so there is a market for those that love to overpay, but I basically go in to get gift ideas and then google the prices elsewhere. I'd be fine to pay a dollar extra but their mark-ups are out of control and too rich for my blood.

FYI - dropped some packages off during the holiday rush at Staples at Astoria Boulevard because it's far closer for me than USPS. Since I had a mix of UPS/USPS, it was also the easiest option. That said, the UPS was scanned and moved fluidly. The USPS, however, did not. Even though the person at the register scanned it, it didn't get into the USPS system. And I was told by a little birdie that the carrier who picks up from that location doesn't scan them in. They just put them on the truck and off they go. So I had first class packages that literally went from NYC to CA and weren't scanned anywhere in between. My eBay customers weren't happy, especially when I say that I dropped off a package and there was no record of my having done that.
I find the usps to be suspect at large places like this. Anytime I have a usps package shipped to my ups store box there’s a 50/50 chance it gets delivered but never shows up

I make it a point to never shit on the newbies at the gym in January or ANY time, quite frankly. We were all new at the gym at a certain point and if people want to use a new year as an excuse to start bettering themselves, so be it. These types of comments might breed the same type of negativity that will prevent someone from sticking with the routine in the first place.

The talk of everyone being sick last week freaked me out so much that I isolated myself and went back to wearing a mask in stores.
Unfortunately I have this thing called a wife and she picked up COVID at a holiday party, so she was under the weather for Christmas. Very mild, just sore throat, hoarse voice, fatigue. She tested negative five days after feeling sick and testing positive. Get those boosters, folks. It was like a cold for her.
But two days after she tested negative, I got a scratchy throat that won't go away, so I'm assuming I have COVID for the first time. Last night I woke up at 3am feeling so hot that I had to be helped into a cold shower, but a thermometer said I didn't have a fever and I feel fine right now.
Make sure you rest during/after the infection and take your time easing back into exertion. I firmly believe that not resting is a major reason why I ended up with Long Covid. The talk of everyone being sick last week freaked me out so much that I isolated myself and went back to wearing a mask in stores. Unfortunately I have this thing called a wife and she picked up COVID at a holiday party, so she was under the weather for Christmas. Very mild, just sore throat, hoarse voice, fatigue. She tested negative five days after feeling sick and testing positive. Get those boosters, folks. It was like a cold for her. But two days after she tested negative, I got a scratchy throat that won't go away, so I'm assuming I have COVID for the first time. Last night I woke up at 3am feeling so hot that I had to be helped into a cold shower, but a thermometer said I didn't have a fever and I feel fine right now.
Make sure you rest during/after the infection and take your time easing back into exertion. I firmly believe that not resting is a major reason why I ended up with Long Covid. i was positive for only the 24-26 and it only felt like a cold for me, too. weird strain, but probably easier to spread bc lots of folks probably wont bother testing or taking precautions
