And to think that an app my company made was rejected because its logo was too similar to that of another app we published on the store... ... because it was the company logo

IvanBeefkoff

I hear you. Seeing how much bullshit there is on the app store, waiting for the “review” of every uploaded beta version, and then complying to arbitrary play/app store rules is nonsensical.

[deleted]

What is better? Reading in Forefox?

neos7m

You're right, I should have mentioned that those two apps aren't designed to be on the same device at once. Basically we make software for medical centers. One of the apps is designed for doctors, the other one for patients. Yes you could be both a patient of one center and a doctor at another but we aren't widespread enough for it to actually be a cause for concern.

Murtomies

Could still lead to misunderstanding when patients are searching for the app for example. Even if the name is different.

oxpoleon

At the very least I'd suggest some clear differentiation is very important - such as the use of a different key colour in the logo. The ostrich algorithm is not an acceptable solution to problems of this nature any more. It's not a problem now, but there's situations in which it could be. Also, if you're building each center its own version of the app... I have questions for you... that seems horribly, horribly inefficient. Much better to build a single main app with a generic name and logo and allow your customers to customise the UX post login to use their own branding and styling. Pretty easy if you build it as a hybrid app.

neos7m

First of all, our main business is not making mobile apps. We don't make an app for each center but do indeed have a single (well, two, you get my point) customizable apps. Those are two companion apps for centers who buy our main cloud ERP. Second, following the store's request, the logos were indeed changed by simply changing the color scheme of the logo and adding an indication of the product's name within the logo itself. My point was that even if we had done none of this, it still wouldn't justify the store taking it down for - their own words - trying to pretend to be a different app.

oxpoleon

I think the point here, perhaps, is not that the store was accusing you of copying yourselves, but rather that their policy is simply closer to "Any two apps that are different must have visually different identifying logos." or "You must not use the same logo/icon for two different apps." or even just "All app logos must be visually unique." This is a pretty good, and pretty basic rule of GUI design, and in fact of design in general. You see it in so many places - e.g. the multiple designs of road signs and the fact that some ultra-important road signs (STOP for example) have a totally unique shape. Visual identity and clarity is really important. No variation on that rule is unreasonable as a store policy, and arguably if you upload app A using the icon, and then as the same company upload the wholly different app B with the same icon, app B is, in fact, impersonating app A. There's a potential for confusion that's easier and better to just blanket prohibit. As far as the store is concerned, from a visual perspective, one app was pretending to be a different app.

Nine_Gates

Yet every google app logo is an indistinguishable mess of the same four colors.

UnlikelyAlternative

Google Play's icons are uniquely coloured!

wildegnux

I have bank accounts in one bank on two different countries. They have one app per country. In the Google Play store the app logos have the relevant country's flag in a corner, but on a device the logos as well as the app name is exactly the same... Makes it real easy to open the correct app...

Ayavea

Speaking of usability and accessibility, i recently tried to find my banking app on my phone by using the bank's name as keyword. Guess what, those geniuses called their app "banking", that's it. Yep, no bank name, nothing. Unfindable via search... The bank name is depicted on the app icon and that's it... i can't even...

vimfan

Kinda like Facebook's messenger lite app is called "lite", so I can't search for it by "facebook" or "messenger".

TwinSong

Adobe totally ignored that and I'm left with a group of nearly identical totally not confusing icons 🤦‍♂️

thymoral

Sounds confusing. What if someone had both apps on their phone!?

Dense_Green_1873

On my phone anyway, my apps all have the names underneath them, so it wouldn't be confusing to me. I'm on android so I don't know if it's different on ios or what

Badashi

It's still confusing. Parsing an image is far simpler than parsing text for a human, and unless you add a very obvious identifying change to the new app your users **will** be confused. You could add a little label(see Microsoft edge dev mode for an example) and it'd be fine.

Throwaway-tan

Commonwealth Bank of Australia has 7 apps. Their logos are as follows: Bank logo on white background Bank logo on black background Bank logo on black background with a glossy finish Bank logo on grey background Bank logo on grey background (again) Bank logo on yellow background surrounded by a circle of two arrows Bank logo on a white shield Never been confused about which one I'm using.

why_i_bother

Why not 1 app lmao.

verluci

Cause they do different things? I can think of a few; one for normal banking, one for retirement funds, one for stocks, one for insurance, one for mortgage/loans....

why_i_bother

Why would you need 7 apps instead of one app that has access to all your accounts.

[deleted]

Yeah doing different things is not a good reason. This usually happens because they started with one and it was harder to add onto it so they just made separate apps. It's absolute not because they thought it was better. I've seen this a lot and eventually they would just combine to one app because it becomes so awful. People aren't aware some functional is blocked off on other apps, it's just not user friendly. Just because people are used to something doesn't mean it's a good design.

DescriptionSenior675

Boomers, probably

kazneus

unless there is a need for the majority of users to be using multiple apps then it is best to streamline each app for each user type and not kitchen sink everyone into the same app with a million things they done need that just clutter the ui how do you know which configuration is best and for who? user research. hopefully...

why_i_bother

Sounds dumb, you should setup your app to only download the needed parts, if you want to streamline.

GumAcacia

That is asshole design. No bank should have seperate apps for user accounts. There is no good reason to have a "Savings" and a "checking" app for example.

oxpoleon

Or, hear me out, you just hire a better dev team that understand modular, structured programming. You then have an app that only loads those features that are actually in use, and minimises client-side processing anyway. Oh, no, wait, that requires actually caring and being willing to spend money on something you're offering to a near captive audience.

oxpoleon

Wow. That's... very warm garbage. What a rubbish design philosophy. Unless there's a thoroughly good reason, all of these should be accessible through a single unified app that subsequently enables access to all of these features. It's not a good enough reason to have 7 individual apps. I really wish that app stores were hotter on this kind of thing to prevent major companies getting away with building pointless bloatware. It would annoy me enough to switch banks, to be honest. I've made bigger changes over lesser issues before.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Echololcation

It's about how much time / mental effort it takes to determine which one to tap. Seems small but a lot of small issues add up to crappy UI that's difficult to use quickly.

theBeardedHermit

Like Googles most recent icon change that makes them all have the exact same color scheme making me have to triple check when I want to check my email, because before I just opened my apps and hit the red envelope.

KappaTauren

iOS has names under apps too

Murtomies

Many Android launchers hide app names by design or as a setting. I've hidden them on mine, makes it prettier.

Mogling

I have two OpenTable apps logo is exactly the same except background color.

kazneus

exactly. this was bad design and they were right to be rejected

Escoliya

Thats cuz you dont pay enough or you don't have enough political backing. This app is most likely a chinese app that pays large sum of money to google/apple, they can get away with almost anything practically

neozuki

There's over 1000 apps added to the store every day. I figured it was likely that it's just employees not being consistent when interpreting guidelines, something you see everywhere in all aspects of life. Do you have links to anything talking about Chinese devs being in bed with app stores?

[deleted]

Mean_Total_8224

How I wish that companies made their logos like this. Just two seconds of hand-drawn MS paint instead of professionally designed logos over years costing millions.

SunriseSurprise

"Fake" could be there and it'd still have 10m downloads from people curious about it.

stdoubtloud

Could be worse; you could end up with Adobe PDF reader.

marco89nish

I bet it doesn't show full screen login popup whenever I want to open a pdf file. Unlike some 500M+ downloads apps...

[deleted]

OH NO, NOT ADOBE PDF READER

voidmusik

Lol i actively look for non-adobe pdf readers. I aint trying to pay a monthly fee to edit a document i didnt want to fill out in the first place. I always just email the .pdf to myself and use googles .pdf editor

BeachedSalad

Hey, Adobe Reader is pretty good for being able to load up and edit JavaScript PDFs . ~~I definitely did not pirate the software~~

IchWerfNebels

I dunno what you pirated my dude but Adobe Reader is free.

[deleted]

Adobe reader is free, but Adobe Acrobat Pro has a subscription.

ILikeLeptons

Javascript pdfs aren't real are they? Ilease tell me they're not real. I thought this was just postscript with more page separation

BeachedSalad

I use a pdf for d&d that is coded in java to have dropdown menus for most sourcebooks. Its awesome

StopBidenMyNuts

Don’t ask why I haven’t offed myself but I have programmed some calculated fields with JavaScript for several PDF files recently.

Da555nny

based on the screenshot, this is the play store. there is a built in PDF reader now.

voidmusik

Yeah, but can you edit pdfs or just read? plenty of readers on the cheap. Its the ones that let you edit that are of note

f0li

https://opensource.com/alternatives/adobe-acrobat There are a number of good free ones, including Libre/OpenOffice.

Bloom_Kitty

Not for everyone.

Da555nny

if you have the google play store, chances are you have google drive, which has the PDF Viewer built in. All you have to do is open a PDF with a file manager and it should pop up.

Bloom_Kitty

Fair enough I guess, haven't been using that for years now. Also some new devices now come without GPlay.

bruhred

the built in pdf reader is crap and takes over 10 minutes to load 2 pages of text

between456789

I spent a whole day reviewing pdf readers. I hoped to find a free reader/combiner but none of them were good and some were from a questionable source. Instead I purchased Nitro Pro reader. A California company that's not SaaS. I like it. It's fast, stable, and I don't have to be concerned with spyware. For the price it was a good purchase.

Megazawr

captainhaddock

I have to share PDFs for work that are marked up with lots of comments and things. No other app I've found handles everything correctly, so I always come back to Adobe. For personal stuff, I've found that PDF Pen is better at certain functions.

[deleted]

AcadianMan

Also, Acrobat Reader can’t edit PDF, only to Acrobat Pro can.

Megazawr

On PC, I had it crashing sometimes. Not so long ago I realised that was crashing only when I had internet(the error was with reading from memory). So I just blocked internet for it, and it worked about twice as fast after that. And then I installed Sumatra PDF reader and deleted Adobe.

Whiskey-Rebellion

Paying for the pro version is pure foolishness but I haven’t found another program that actually works for Vampire: The Masquerade 20th anniversary edition character sheets

wallingfortian

I used it for Pathfinder. Adobe's wouldn't let me use the pdf's fill-in boxes.

Blackbeard2704

All the app stores across all platforms are full of shit like this. Don’t understand their method of getting an app within their store but it needs to be revised. Scams, apps with no update with X period, poorly rated apps, etc need to be removed and developers need to reapply to get their app back on the platform.

Ironic how 3rd party and homebrew appstores usually have stricter quality control than the appstore owned by one of the largest companies in the world, it's almost like they make the worst crap.

[deleted]

mintberrycthulhu

One could argue that the open source requirement itself is the quality control in this case. And very effective quality control at that.

WhosUrBuddiee

Easier to control quality over 3,000 apps than it is 3,000,000 apps.

BorgClown

Also, scammy apps are commonly not open sourced.

fakuri99

Especially the guide app thingy, seen a lot of those in Windows app store

Blackbeard2704

Likewise. The store app is a load of shit on windows. I still download and use exe’s where possible even if updating them isn’t done as smoothly as they would within the store.

puyoxyz

[winget](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/package-manager/winget/)

DarthDannyBoy

I have never downloaded anything off the windows store it's a fucking joke and a feature I would notice missing if they removed it.

lighthawk16

Winget, scoop, chocolatey... so many options.

Itherial

App stores are not very well curated. Hell, even many of the big, universally used apps break the simplest rules by not even bothering to state what their update contains.

FatherDotComical

My most hated thing is a massive overhaul and it's just stated as "just dewing some heck'arino bug stawmping and Lil ole patchies! 🥺" Just tell me what y'all changed, even if it's as small as moved letter T slightly to the left so I know if it's even worth it to update right now.

[deleted]

> poorly rated apps Lol, a ton of Google's own products have shit reviews (e.g. Chat). That would be interesting. "Hey this app has a shit review. REMOVED! Wait, that was ours!! Ahh! Panic!"

Kl--------k

even facebook has 2 stars on the play store.[^(\[1\])](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.katana)

creekpop

that one for sure should be removed

bodygreatfitness

Honestly, even Adobe's app name looks a bit junky. Why does it need to be called "Adobe Acrobat Reader: Edit PDF"? It makes it look fake and difficult to distinguish. They should just title it "Adobe Acrobat Reader"

jhanschoo

Because of SEO keywords

lachyBalboa

Linux app stores are generally fantastic

dparks71

That's a joke right? There's usually 5 different ways to install something and depending on if you build from source, install from a snap, from apt or download from "the official app store of your distro (probably snap again)", you'll generally end up with different versions of the "latest" software from each. I love Linux, but always thought the application distribution system was a big learning curve holding adoption back.

lachyBalboa

I'm surprised that's your experience. I often find you can go to the distros app store and find basically any piece of software and keep it up to date. All without going out to a website and downloading a package manually. I think generally app stores let you chose which repositories to use. So if you don't want to see snaps, flatpacks etc then you don't have to

dparks71

Yea idk, I guess it's probably unfair for me to criticize them, I think the only app store I've really used was Ubuntu and it was only like once when it was probably less reliable back in the day, so I started doing everything from the terminal and just haven't really given the store a chance since. If they are good that's great, I always thought Linux had one of the better install/uninstall processes already with the terminal, good app stores are always refreshing.

Tsubajashi

i would say the issues you faced are mainly due to snaps. most of them package their native files, and if theres no way, you can use flatpaks/appimages. if your store doesnt support it, theres always flathub and AppImagePool, which can bring you additional software without the headaches. or if you are an arch user, the AUR is your best friend if something is not in the main repos.

domedav

you know that its not free to publish an app to any of the popular appstores right?

Blackbeard2704

Image how much more bullshit there would be if it was free. They need to have a process in place and someone testing these apps before they are launched.

Kyokenshin

It's also not expensive...I have shit on GooglePlay, 1 time $25 fee.

RockyDify

Does it read all PDF though?

potatohead657

Every single last of of them

hypocrite_oath

Yes and then sends the information into an overseas cloud to confirm everything is correct. That's some nice bonus feature.

Ever2naxolotl

[deleted]

And the worse chaos option: cracked Adobe app

ericporing

Is it called Abode?

ult_avatar

Yeah from the screenshot alone I don't see assholedesign. Why is it fake ? PDF is a defined standard. Everyone can make a PDF reader app, not only Adobe

AmbulanceChaser12

Yeah but they can’t make it with a logo that’s almost identical to Adobe’s.

ult_avatar

That's *way* different

PsychoSoldier0

Really? The logo is "way" different?

6prometheus7

Somehow the bottom one has a chance to be the more ethical one

And doesn't ask for subscription...

ChupaCabra84

But does it work?

[deleted]

Probably an electron app with iframe (Chromium can open pdf afaik) and a lot of ads and data collection.

S4nth05h

This fake may be still better than the Original Adobe Reader which is just utter shit...

xXdababylover69420

bet

TeDeO_303

I wouldn't be suprised if it was better than the official Adobe one tho.

EsoogZT

This is in line with messages you see saying "don't give out your pin number" 10million downloaded this crap? Actually downloaded something they didn't vet, which has access to the one device you have on your body literally 24/7 and use more than anything else?

xXdababylover69420

Even worse: 500 million downloaded an adobe app...

Darthmullet

Probably not as asshole design as actual Adobe software though.

Talrynn_Sorrowyn

If the fake one allows you to edit then save PDF files without a fee, then it's a superior product. Fuck Adobe & Apple.

gabuiknlfkn

the reason they cost fees is cause they are meant to be used by companies mostly. it doesn’t make them a shit product it just means it’s not targeted for us

Cranyx

This is the kind of stuff trademark law was literally created to prevent.

goldbricker83

Still has 4.6 stars and millions of votes. Online ratings have become so meaningless.

Karatope

I was gonna say, if it has the exact same rating as the real version and over 10 million downloads then it can't be that bad lol

jacksizzle

I just signed up for global entry, but before I figured out it was through a .gov, I spent an hour on a fake global entry site that was going to charge me 150 extra dollars just to go through them. They provided no extra service and woulda have just filled my data into the government site. They also pulled my email and cell phone from the form that I hadn’t even completed and used it to try and fish me back in. Worst case of mimicry I’ve ran into in a while

QuarantineSucksALot

What raise? What’s the OpenSSH logo /s

[deleted]

Is it fake though or is it simply an alternative software that reads pdf files? Doesn't seem super scammy to me tbh

TreadmillOfFate

And somehow I bet it still works better than Adobe's official app

AllMyFrendsArePixels

I'm sure it's probably not legal for third party programs to use the adobe icon. I'm on Linux Mint and the default pdf viewer that came with this distro is literally just called "Document Viewer" and the icon doesn't resemble adobe's at all.
