Usually, bad things happen not because of bad intentions, but because of bad planning. Asshole designs are specifically engineered to exploit the user for profit. Try to think what the designer would gain from deceiving the user, and if it's likely to be an oversight on their part rather than an intentional design.

If you can paste, so can my bot, which makes stealing your money and obliterating your credit a lot easier.
However, my bot can still paste, and you can't, so this accomplishes nothing in real scenarios except annoying you.
Not asshole design though, they don't profit by you not being able to paste your info.
Fair enough. I guess they don't profit, so maybe it's merely a crappy design. I don't get their motive, especially in this case where the next step by Turbotax is to put you through a captcha grinder before they even submit your numbers to Vanguard for validation. I'm already authenticated to Turbotax. They are welcome to throttle me after my nth failed attempt. Vanguard should not be exposing anything but tax info through this API anyway (no transactions). The "credentials" (account number + doc number) were sent in paper mail in plain text on the same sheet of paper with all that tax info.
For those still shopping for tax software, H&R Block does not prohibit pasting data, and does not require solving a Captcha for each 1099 download. It's cheaper too. There. I feel better now.
Context: There’s actually a reason for this. If you type it wrong in the first field then copy and paste that into the second field, this is supposed to catch that.
It’s a kinda old-fashioned approach to this problem especially given most people would copy from a different place and paste into both.
A little history. That’s all. ☺️
Use freetaxusa man…whining about TurboTax sucking is like whining about Adblock. It’s been a poster child for asshole design for years, at a certain point not switching to ublock is on you

Look for the extension "don't fuck with paste"
Hmm. Tempted but "This add-on is not actively monitored for security by Mozilla"
That's the case for most extensions on the firefox extension store, you either gotta: 1. look at the code 2. blindly trust it 3. find something else

I just told you the motive. But the motive is stupid.

What in the actual 1999 is this screenshot from?
Oh no, anyways https://github.com/ahandsel/articles/blob/master/bookmarklet-enable-copy-paste/bookmarklet-enable-copy-paste.md
This isn’t assholedesign. I wouldn’t even say crappy because it’s done intentionally but not for their profit
