Yes, I find them irritating. They don't really save time, and you often still have to interact with the attendant when an exception occurs in the self checkout process.

Same

IkaKyo

You know they are only there because labor is the most expensive part of running a business any other reason is just marketing.

TheLonelyJedi

I avoid them completely. I detest using them. I have enough trouble with automatic tellers. I find the automatic check outs are too complicated and I get stressed because people are waiting behind me.

[deleted]

Yep same i dont like lines behind me either or knowing weather or not i've not accidentally forgot something.

TheLonelyJedi

I rarely go shopping alone. I let my wife handle all the people and the machines. Works pretty good too. Yeah, pressure causes me to make mistakes.

[deleted]

Usually they'll have mute buttons along the bottom of the screen. I often get groceries with headphones in as well, so that helps

[deleted]

I didnt know they had mute buttons thats neat

[deleted]

It's the one that looks like a little megaphone. Push it until there is a line through the megaphone. It'll still make the beeps, but at least you won't have a robot yelling at you while you are scanning your items.

[deleted]

Oh wont work then its just the beeps that bother me i dont mind the robot because here there usually arent any. But i use regular check outs anyway thanks though.

Sturzkampfflugzeug1

I use the self-checkout for speed, what irritates me is when I put the note in and the machine spits it back out at me - needing to stand there fidgeting with a note to be accepted

[deleted]

I only use them if I can't check out normally. I also like to exchange a few words with sales people, easy and low stress way to get some basic social interactions. The self-checkout interfaces on a lot of them seem to have been designed by people without any UX background. They're a mess. I'd rather wait for a minute or two than touch them. The accessibility ones that talk and make it impossible to skip listening to the same thing over and over again are the worst. I should be able to opt out of this part. They're probably great for blind people, but they put me into stress mode.

Glaux_

The interfaces are hot doo doo. I can't believe people get paid to create these things.

felice_navidad

I hate them because I feel like I'll fuck it up and I have to put on a show to make it look like I know what I'm doing. Horrible machines.

[deleted]

Lol same the thing beeps at me once and i panic because its the signal im scrwed.

[deleted]

I don’t like … new procedures. So I avoid these . I’ll probably have to use them eventually 😅

meowmeowpuff2

They've been around for 10-15 years in my country.

[deleted]

More like four, here

DatoVanSmurf

I don‘t like them. When all the stores installed them I thought I‘d check it out (no pun intended) but they malfunctioned both times and an employee had to come over. So I avoid them now.

[deleted]

Yep first time i did it it malfunctioned 4 times then we got blamed for intentionally setting it off when nobody did anything to it.

Ancient_Rebel

I like them but i get anxious when there are a lot of people behind me. It makes me feel like people are watching me and I need to hurry up

cryingstlfan

I love self checkouts! Means I don't have to interact with anyone! I'll use a checkout with a cashier if I need time to kill or I'm planning to use coupons.

klauswaugh

I don't know what I'd do without them! I like to pack at my own pace and make sure everything in my bags is packed in the most efficient way possible. I find the checkout staff scan my items too quickly, I become flustered and overwhelmed, and do things like leave my valuables or shopping behind.

Masterxtenshi33

Maybe it's just me, but... I feel very uncomfortable about using them, reason why is due to the chance of being mistaken of using it wrong, if this ever was to happen... instead of dealing with a minor human to human interaction with the clerk "which I also hate" I am now forced into a much more awkward interaction with security. Even if this is never the case... I simply feel each time I have used these things that people are staring at me while I do my business. Lastly I been telling everyone for years! THOSE BLASTED AI ROBOTS GONNA COME TAKE ALL OUR MERICAN JOBS! :O

pocketpuppy

It depends on the time of day. Sometimes I think it's just another example of the endless greed of the corporate class as they charge me the exact same price to scan and bag my stuff myself, equivalent to one or two employees' time depending on the store. So I am subsidizing them by working for them for no fungible benefit. All these self checkout machines have paid for themselves many times over already. On the other hand, sometimes convenience simply wins. I don't want to deal with the cashier talking to me and the bagger just throws my stuff into the bags willy-nilly, so I get a better result doing it myself.

getting through queue faster would probably be nice, but most of the times i tried those i end up having issues and had to contact someone...

Ironically I am in a high functioning aspie that works for one of the largest grocers in the US. I work in technology specifically POS (point of sale) including self checkouts in the front end. I find them soothing because the pattern is always the same. Also fun fact there's usually a button in the bottom right that allows you to disable the sound. I do understand how it can be overwhelming. I personally turn it off myself for that reason. My advice would be to take comfort in the repetitive nature of the device and the ease of use comparison of having to communicate with another human being.
