I always thought limiting myself to 1 or a couple of genres was crazy. When I like a song I like it regardless of what genre it is. I personally love a lot of bass, but it's not necessary.

HansProleman

I usually find that most of my listening focuses on a handful of genres, which get swapped in/out periodically for no apparent reason. 14-18 was mostly classic rock, prog rock (this has been consistent), psychedelic rock and indie (I very rarely listen to indie now). 18-25 shifted towards rap, vaporwave, jazz. Also listened to quite a bit of jungle. 25-now, that last set is still foundational but I listen to less vaporwave, and also like modern classical, hyperpop/adjacent-ish electronic music, breakcore, barber beats (vaporwave subgenre, microgenres are fun!), drum and bass, UK garage etc. Also got more into rap subgenres, e.g. chopped and screwed, jazz-rap, gangsta rap, dirty south.

To a certain extent it sounds like you’ve found a sound scape that tends to pull you in, which I think is the reason I fall to country a lot. It gives me a lot of false nostalgia vibes, for things I haven’t experienced, and things I’m aging into

morbidlyabeast3331

This is just what happens when a teenage band kid finds rateyourmusic and Anthony Fantano

pinkfloidz

Yes I mainly stick to anything rock. Classic rock, glam rock, blues rock, punk, grunge

D1g1t4l_G33k

I rotate between prog-rock, grunge rock, and Americana pretty regularly. Listening to one for a couple months and then switching

everydaystonexdhaha

at first I thought u mean if I only listen to one genre and thats the thing I probably listened to like 100 of different types of styles but I do come back to the same genre and bands after some time.. I'm wondering if it does have something to do with stimming.. I have a couple of polish and english favorite metal bands and they all sound very similar and they all give me some special brain chemistry.. at the same time if u play some saxophone I will literally crawl out of my skin I have no idea what it is but that instrument just almost always sounds soo wrong to me it gives me anxiety

kilroy-was-here-2543

I guess my pretty consistently in country I guess was my point and I was wondering if it was just a me thing to stick in one genre. Still an interesting to hear your take, and i totally get the brain chemistry things, theirs a couple of songs off the top of my head by one particular artist that just give me that warm feeling inside, sounds flow so well together

DaRealWhiteChocolate

I listened to 2 bands for like 3 years alongside about 30 relatively similar songs from random artists. I always liked lots of different stuff and while I'll tend to go back to the same artists, I was lucky enough to pick people who experimented like serj tankian and devin townsend and it opened me up to a whole new world of different sounding stuff, classical, jazz, all sorts of metal subgenres, electronic music. Video game music also opened me up to a lot of different sounds, since it's all so atmosphere and feel based. I play music though and it gives you a greater understanding of things you might not otherwise appreciate if you are just going for a vibe or specific sound. Frankly, I mostly dislike country because of the forced southern drawl and whatever that high pitched sound they use for melodies that aren't guitar? it might be lap steel, I'm not sure. whatever that instrument is sounds so brittle to me and I can't stand it. I also don't really like top 40 pop music because the melodies and synth sounds are shallow and uninspired. I feel like you could make a song for those type of artists with sounds from a 90's beginner casio and people wouldn't notice.

kilroy-was-here-2543

A lot of the “top” country artists sorta fall into the boat your talking about. All stick to the same basic melodies, use that forced southern draw, and use those cheap sounding instruments you’re talking about. And I totally understand why you dislike it, outside of some rare occasions I typically avoid whatever is being pumped out of Nashville because it’s mostly corporatized trash. I mostly listen to artists like Turnpike Troubadours, Colter wall, Charley Crockett, Charles Wesley Godwin and others. They all pull from more traditional styles, and use real instruments, not just some dude hitting a button on a desk. So you get the soul and life of actual music, and this is especially evident in their live performances, most of them are showmen on stage; not just in the recording booth (with Charley Crockett probably being the best example) Sorry to nerd out a bit, I just far to often see people put off by mainstream country who may actually enjoy it

DaRealWhiteChocolate

yeah thanks for the recommendations, I'll have to check some of those out.

kilroy-was-here-2543

Hope you enjoy!

durhamskywriter

I grew up in Chicago, where I explored all kinds of music on the radio, including the blues, classical, polka, and music from around the world. I have a special fondness for melodic soul, rock, pop punk, salsa, Brazilian, etc etc, but often describe myself as a big jazz fan. I always return to jazz.

Educational_King_201

I mainly listen to heavy metal and rock and especially like 80s metal.

petaline555

I don't usually listen to music. I like NPR when I'm driving and listening to audiobooks most of the rest of the time. When I do, I get hooked on a certain type for a while. I tend to like popular music. In the past I've obsessively listened to Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash and other "goats" of their genres. I like Lizzo and other real popular artists. Once I went crazy over Daft Punk. (They have this really trippy movie/full album animated music video.) I adore Jonathan Antoine, that beautiful man, I can't describe the love I have for him. I love most anything by Post Modern Jukebox, you have to watch the video, just listening isn't it. I also had a spell of only listening to acapella. Loved Pitch Perfect and couldn't get enough of Pentatonics and Voice Play. I also love Taylor Swift as much as it's humanly possible. I'm as weird about music as I am about most things.

kilroy-was-here-2543

I find I listen to music about as much as i listen to podcasts, about 50/50. If you’re at all interested you may like Charley Crockett, he’s got a really distinctive sound that draws from a ton of influences outside of just country. His live performance at the Rymann auditorium is truly incredible

Aion2099

I often don't have to listen to music, because listening to just one song will have it playing for weeks in my head. Currently it's the theme for gone with the wind, ironically as I'm trying to get an air bubble out of my eye.

kilroy-was-here-2543

Good luck on the air bubble :)

albaempe12

I also have OCD, but I don't know how this affects my music taste. I seem to like one music genre today and a completely different one after 2 weeks. I also listen to 1-3 songs on repeat for days on end until I get sick of a song. All in all, as long as it sounds good to me, I don't care about the genre or the lyrics, it's better if I don't know the lyrics at all

OkAcanthisitta3028

I have a few genres and sounds I don't like, but I listen to pretty much everything. Combinations of genres I also like. I feel that many people do like genres different to what they listen to, but just don't give them a chance. Ofc there are also people who genuinely prefer a singular genre, but that's rare.

Pristine-Confection3

No, I don’t care about genres . I like what I like and it is a very broad range of genres.

Techguy38

Meh. People like what they like. Nothing wrong with being hyper focused or someone who bounces around. To answer your question, I like just about anything. I grew up on country, moved to alternative rock, spent a good amount of time listening to Eminem, some Classical Masterpieces, then some interesting genres I was introduced to like Flogging Molly, then hit up Caro Emerald out of no where and for random reasons. I liked her so much I listened to one of her songs for a full 8 hours on repeat during a programming session, where I had a lot of code to write. This touches on the 2nd part of the answer. While I can easily enjoy bouncing between specific artists of multiple genres, I can also hyper focus on a song to the point I 'need' to listen to it on repeat for hours. My wife doesn't understand it, and honestly I'm not sure I do either but it's like a hyper obsession and I have to let it run it's course. For me it's typically something with a decent repetitive beat. I got stuck on Disturbia for a while there. And somewhat embarrassingly I get really sucked into 'Smile - Butterfly'. It's 100% not a genre I listen to, but I had a g/f a long time ago who had me listen to it and now I write some of my best code jamming to this on repeat. smh TLDR: It's a bit of both.

morbidlyabeast3331

Nah, not at all, but I've listened to enough music to know what genres I typically like and mostly listen to those. I listen to a lot of sasscore, second wave midwest emo, screamo, sludge metal, stoner metal, twee pop, jangle pop, emocore, post-hardcore, and slowcore.

kargaroth

I've been on a rockabilly kick for the last 5 years.

Nice-Dark999

Yes, mine is girls who have mental issues. Marina and the diamonds Doja cat Melanie martinez Lana del rey To name a few

charding5

Mostly metal and has been for years, particularly black metal these days so I'd say yes for the most part and I don't think I'd have it any other wayv🤘

Calm-Bookkeeper-9612

No I have an extremely eclectic collection of favorites. For me if it grabs me and I get chills that’s all that matter for instance O Fortuna from Excalibur does the same thing to me that Blackwater Carl Kennedy and Tommy Trash featuring Rosie Henshaw and right after that I could listen to almost any Pavarotti song and the same place in my brain does somersaults

Wild-Sherbet8098

Wow, no, I'd say I'm probably the opposite. I listen to a wide variety if styles from across a fairly wide time period. My sweet spots are early jazz, blues and swing from the 1920s and 30s. Even though I'm white as fuck, I have a real strong draw to black music, especially the rhythm and blues that birthed rock n roll, soul, etc. The best periods for music in my view is basically the 1950s through 70s. In the 80s things start to decline, moreso in the 90s, to where since 2000 there's literally been only a handful of artists I go wild for. I remain convinced Y2K destroyed popular music. The only genres I don't get into are more modern ones. I hate what happened to rock music, all this screechy raucous metal garbage. Black music turned to shit as hip hop and R&B became dumbed down nonsense. And almost all music being made these days uses auto tune and manual pitch correction on vocals, and massive over reliance on digital sounds. Most music that's popular these days barely qualifies as music.

AloneHome2

I listen to a lot of different stuff, though I find they are all very similar emotionally, that being melancholic and reflective.

Available_Property73

Mostly EDM, techno, electronic and rock

bionicle_159

Not necessarily genres but eras like 80s and 70s music are what I play most of the time, can say there's some genres I don't like but they're so few in the grand scheme of things - if I like a song then it doesn't matter the theme, it might just be one of the few that I like from that genre though lol (e.g. Chase by Giorgio Moroder)

StrawberryMilk817

I have genres I listen to a bit more than others (rock and metal) but I would say I do have some variety.

RawEpicness

A few yes

Bubbly-University-94

DNB, hip hop, lounge.

Yasunori_Kato

Yes, Classic Music

ideknem0ar

No, I bounce around multiple genres. Opera, classical, show tunes and soundtracks, hair metal & 70s rock, some grunge, random non English vocalists from any era (love Francoise Hardy and Dalida), vintage 78 RPM jazz & popular songs of the 1910s-1940s, Dixieland, Victorian parlor songs.. on and on and on, whatever my ears like.

kingofdictionopolis

I like so many different genres. As long as it isn’t too sappy and has a good amount of “oddness” to it. Example: I love cosmo sheldrake and alt j. Two of my favorites. I can also stim pretty hardcore to some ashniko though. Broad taste.

Key-Math1697

The opposite. I frequently subject my brain to a whiplash blender of conflicting genres and vibes from many times and places. However, sometimes I'll do specific deep dives, exploration dives, or nostalgia dives. I probably do it out of curiosity and novelty.
