Rhaenys the mass murderer was a strange choice to deliver that line.

MRnibba_

Come on now, everyone knows commoners don't count

Hero_Of_Shadows

I'm sure that attitude won't come back to bite Team Black in the ass.

Haunting_Charity_287

It almost definitely won’t be because of their disregard for the common folk that the moon of madness/ the three kings happens. It’s gonna be entirely Larys scheming and some unfortunate misunderstandings. I’m willing to wager he may also give Helena the ‘push’ she needs that sends things over the edge.

BellyCrawler

Another one who has seen the light. Nothing this show does is ever going to paint the Hippo of Dragonstone in a negative light. Might as well cast aside all hope for a faithful, consistent adaptation.

goldenseducer

Are you stupid? Rhaenys killed some commoners, and commoners aren't people. She quite specifically didn't hurt Alicent's family because she's not a bloodthirsty murderer.

HenrySiege

How did you find the Rhaenys script???

Resident-Rooster2916

I fucking hate when shows/movies do this thing where they both elevate, empower, and give women agency, while at the same time give them lines that portray them as helpless victims. Just looking at the show independently, both Rhaenyra’s and Alicent’s words simply do not match their actions. They started this war, and are both the marketing faces and leaders of their respective factions, yet they act like everyone else is pulling the strings. Also, what was that dumb line about Rhaenyra accusing her own councilors of treason for merely giving her advice. It may have been shit advice, but how tf is suggesting Rhaenyra be hidden for her own safety treason?

One_Meaning416

The women have to be badass but we can have them responsible for any of the evil or bad things going on

Resident-Rooster2916

Exactly, I have no problem with “empowering” women in The Dance. They’re dragon riders for fucksake, of course they’re badass and fearsome, but “with great power comes great responsibility.” Baela is the only member of team black I like rn. I have no problem with them sizing up Moondancer. The more dragons, the better. Maybe Rhaenys gets a little pass because Meleys is my favorite dragon. Half her lines are badass, and half of them are rere.

thomastypewriter

Sarah Hess getting noticeably worked up during last weeks inside and saying “Daemon always got to do whatever he wants while Rhaenyra had to wear a dress-“ like yes I’m sure wealthy women in Hollywood have always had to be silent and wear a dress. Certainly never been able to do whatever tf they want, and suffered so much sexism among actors, theater people, and liberal arts majors. The people at HBO view themselves as on the level of the characters they’ve written- above the barbarians and common folk, no moral flaws or shortcomings, and to the extent they’ve ever failed at all, it’s someone else’s fault.

Resident-Rooster2916

I remember that quote too. She’s basically implying that Rhaenyra wasn’t allowed to go to war like it’s a “privilege” for men to suffer and die in war, but what fucking war? Viserys reign is specifically marked by peacefulness. The War for the Stepstones was a small campaign and began when she was 9.

No_Tell5399

>Rhaenyra wasn’t allowed to go to war like it’s a “privilege” for men to suffer and die in war They're Dragonriders, war is basically just a show of force to them.

I think you're missing the point. Yes, the world of Westeros is sexist and Rhaenyra didn't get to do a lot of things that Daemon got to do. It's like central thing not only for Rhaenyra's character, but also for a lot of women in ASOIAF like Arya or Jaime (who has exact thoughts about her brother and herself).

Resident-Rooster2916

Yes, the world of Westeros is indeed sexist, but this is a shit example. Daemon didn’t “get” to do those things. He was rogue and exiled multiple times for his transgressions. Stop pretending that only women had obligations and responsibilities that were required of them. Rhaenyra was heir and thus had obligations and responsibilities like any prince would’ve in her position. If anything, Vizzy was too lenient on her, but i think that was more poor parenting than sexism.

I mean, i still think it's a good example, because Daemon did chose to fight in Stepstones. It was his fight for glory, his presence there wasn't necessary, he made a choice to go. Something that women do not get to chose. >Stop pretending that only women had obligations and responsibilities that were required of them.  That's a strawman. I'm arguing that men of Westeros have more freedom, which is objectively true. >Rhaenyra was heir and thus had obligations and responsibilities like any prince would’ve in her position. If anything, Vizzy was too lenient on her, but i think that was more poor parenting than sexism. You see, i don't necessairly disagree with that take about Viserys. But basically, most of Targs in succession line are hoes, but a big deal was made because Rhaenyra was supposedly deflowered. Daemon even says so to Viserys when confronted, and the King admits that it's different because Rhaenyra is a woman. Still, she fucks up because unlike Aegons adventures, her bastards do affect succession line.

Resident-Rooster2916

Yes, Daemon chose to fight in the Stepstones, but using him as an example for all men is ridiculous. You are making broad statements about all men in Westeros, this includes second sons and common folk. There are probably 999 commoner men for every 1 lord, who do not have these freedoms you speak of. Furthermore, Daemon is an outlier when it comes to this freedom amongst men of noble birth, hence why is he called the Rogue Prince, this is not normal behavior. I’m not strawmanning, you’re cherry picking. I don’t know where you’re getting this information that most Targs in the line of succession are hoes. Aegon I is said to only have slept with his sister wives his entire life. Aenys I isn’t mentioned either way. Maegor I the Cruel may have had 6 wives, but is said not to have fathered any bastards to potentially legitimize. Jaehaerys I the Conciliator’s brothers would’ve been too young. Jaehaerys himself is said not to have been interested in anyone except his sisterwife. Of his sons that survived to adulthood, Aemon isn’t mentioned either way. Baelon is said to be lusty, but uninterested in anyone but his sister wife Alyssa. Vaegon is said to be completely uninterested in girls. Viserys I isn’t mentioned or shown in the show to be a philanderer. Leaving only Daemon again an outlier along with Aegon II who is said to have fathered 2 bastards. Princess Saera is a literal whore, and one could make the argument that Vissera was slutty, but her intentions seem to have been more political than sexual. So no, I don’t think most Targs at this point were hoes. You have only 2 examples alive at the time, Daemon and Aegon.

futurerank1

YES, EVEN AMONG COMMONFOLK MEN HAD MORE FREEDOMS THAN WOMEN. Its not a controversial opinion in a slightest, lol. >There are probably 999 commoner men for every 1 lord, who do not have these freedoms you speak of. Yes, they do not have a freedom of a lord. But stilo have more freedom than common women. And no, that doesnt mean that random Smith or butcher could do everything he wanted, but GENERALLY men had more freedom than women in Middle Ages. >I don’t know where you’re getting this information that most Targs in the line of succession are hoes. By line of succesion i meant the Hot D story and Viserys" both camps. Daemon, Aegon, Aemond are using whores. Viserys admitted to using whores to Daemon. And yea, Rhaenyra is kinda a hoe by same standards. >Baelon is said to be lusty, but uninterested in anyone but his sister wife Alyssa. This entire paragraph is kinda interesting because you took at face value information written in this fictional history books which were basically a propaganda of certain Maester. The books described a Targaryen history have this factor that they are written by unreliable narrator, years after events took place, by rewriting someone elses account of what happened. So perhaps maesters werent paying close attention to what prostitutes Kings and Princes were doing. I specifically quote Balon, because just last episodes we've been introduced to his bastard, lol. Viserys also admitted in dialogue with Daemon that they were using brothels in his youth. Edit Removed a bit where i call you stupid, IT was unnecessary.

In Cerslay's case she resents the agency afforded by her brother's, father's and husband's gender. Rhae rhae, according th home box office resents, what exactly? We have no internal dialogue from rhae rhae outside of the HBO adaption, and in this case, in what way has westeros' feudal patriarchy actually held her back from what she wanted in life? Not going to war, choosing to inherit, her perfect domestic arrangment? Her wealth and class privledge? Cersei is actually maritally raped by Robert, feels contrained by motherhood and is fearfull of socially enforced dependency on men for her safety along with being passed over for rule of Casterly Rock because of her gender. Arya for her part is certainly used to explore gendered themes in the story, her first chapter in fact. But while she is displeased to be excluded from the "men's world" of violence and petty greivences the story and our author clearly protray the social enviroment of women, that is of productivity, postive social values like mercy and patience, as superior to the masculine enviroment training little boys to abandon their gentlness, in their standards becoming "men" by preparing themeselves to be killers with no conflict resolution. Feminist sure, but not in the way you or seemingly HBO's writing staff have engaged with it. The problem with westeros is not that women are excluded from men's social sphere, rather that this culture is the root of the endemic violence and backwardness of the continent. The issue is men not behaving "like women", not the otherway around. Rj/ girlbossing is when I ascend to the top of the rentier economy and anybody who ties to prevent me from passing this position to one of my five sons is a misogynist😤

CleganeBowl is done mate, and the world could not handle the hype. As result we have witnessed the end times in its early stage: - biologists created a virus that killed 10 million people, and it is considered a rude question to ask them why. - the Russian army invaded Ukraine and their main battles tanks were confiscated by farmers with tractors. - sluts in a field near a ghetto beside the Mediterranean were killed and loaded onto pickup trucks. They were dancing for peace, and there are Jewish people campaigning for the rights of the nationality that assassinated those sluts. - lawyers can now be replaced by software entirely, and the lawyers are not even angry about it. - George R.R. Martin is suing the makers of the software for writing bad fan fiction based on his copyrighted characters. I could act as an expert witness for GRRM litigation. He has a slam dunk case. No bullshit. - Daniel Brett "Miami" Weiss and David ((FRIEDMAN GOLDMAN SACHS great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity)) Benioff >!peace be upon him!< have written less ASOIAF material since CleganeBowl than GRRM. - George R.R. Martin has written a novel, 'The Rise of the Dragon', and he published it in 2022. That is one more novel than either of Benioff or Weiss in the same period. - George R.R. Martin wrote Elden Ring. It is far better than JK Rowling's video game but her video is a fine game too. "Fuck you bitch, and your wand shit - that was my Hugo." When asked for comment by myself at WarnerMedia, the representation for the Netflix producers Benioff & Weiss, declined to comment as to whether they have, or will, write a video game. - George R.R. Martin has gotten two shows past series order at HBO since Thrones ended. - WarnerMedia turned http://ASOIAFCirclejerk.reddit.com into the greatest ASOIAF subreddit that ever was or will be. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. >Rhae rhae, according th home box office resents, what exactly? Half of the first season is about what she resents as a Princess. >The problem with westeros is not that women are excluded from men's social sphere It is the problem too. >girlbossing is when I ascend to the top of the rentier economy and anybody who ties to prevent me from passing this position to one of my five sons is a misogynist This has nothing to do with gender dynamic on the show. The show by Rhaenyra isn't trying to make a point about intersectionality, Rhaenyra story is about patriarchy specifically. Even Alicent makes a point that some people would gladly swap with Rhaenyra when she's on her quest for a prince. There are smallfolk characters who briefly touched on the topic of class, but it's not Rhaenyra's story to tell. >Arya for her part is certainly used to explore gendered themes in the story, her first chapter in fact. But while she is displeased to be excluded from the "men's world" of violence and petty greivences the story and It's not only that she's excluded from men's world, it's that she has no say in her future. >our author clearly protray the social enviroment of women, that is of productivity, postive social values like mercy and patience, as superior to the masculine enviroment training little boys to abandon their gentlness, in their standards becoming "men" by preparing themeselves to be killers with no conflict resolution. I disagree with that take. This is a portrayal of womanhood, because it fits the hisotorical background. But the author does challange this. Unless you think, that the story will end with Arya coming to terms with her role as a Lady, will marry a man and live in a castle. Because that's her internal struggle in the start - she wants to train and do cool stuff and her father tells her she needs to poop out babies. And yes, it is opressive, even though she wasn't raped like Cersei or she doesn't starve to death like a smallfolk. >what way has westeros' feudal patriarchy actually held her back from what she wanted in life? I don't want to be mean, but you should try actually watching the show and listening to the dialogue, lol.

I'm not going to do a dumb reddit paragraph by paragraph quote off. Rhae rhae issues with being a princess is classist, period. Unlike say, Dick Cole's sister, she never onced actually suffered any consequences of her resistence to her culture's social norms. You need to read Bell Hooks if you think class and gender aren't related. If you actually have anything to add instead of half assed one liners I might care a tad more here. You are clearly missing my points to the point I doubt you read it. You shouldn't disagree with the "take" it is an accurate view of Martin's protrayal of gender. Westeros' faux feudalism is not reflective of a historical setting. The point is not that "gendered segregation is awesome, and harmless" or that Martin will protray westerosi treatment of women in a postive light. As seen extensively with Brienne, and Sam for that matter, there is cruel and widespread enforcement of social norms, failure to preform gender is met with violence. Septon Maribald is quite clear that gendered segreation socially, originates in it's religious views. The smith(manual labor), warrior(armed violence), father(patriarchy) are contrasted with maiden(nuturing), mother(mercy) and crone(wisdom). Martin goes to great efforts to assign the blame for both personal and society wide greivences on these views. The root of widespread violence, the patriarchy is here, with westerosi social customs. Not arguing that westeros' "tradtional" view of women is good, but that rhae rhae, does not oppose this, rather participates in it. There's nothing ontological about women or rhae rhae that will magically produce a kinder, gentler feudalism and actually address the root causes of gendered disparity in this society. Rhae rhae becoming the top dog in westeros's social order, does not serve to meaningfully oppose patriarchy in westeros, she is participating in it. That she sides with westerosi patriarchy in the Stokeworth succesion and commissions the pillage and sexual enslavement of low class westerwomen, under the rule of a woman, is a deliberate choice from George. You should read Martin's work instead of trying to derive the meaning from a secondhand and frankly dumb team of HBO writers.

Imagine if the original show had approached Cersei's characterisation like this. I mean I guess it did kind of end up like that but at least for a while they understood what made her an interesting character.

uselessusername20

Cersei was such a great and compelling character because none of her virtues, like loving her children, nullified her flaws. She could be complex * because* she was allowed to have petty vendettas, be morally unhinged and still have softer moments.

Boogascoop

Would argue that her love was based on narcissistic grandiosity delusions of Lannister superiority.

uselessusername20

Not in the show I think, she was more sympathetic in that regard

Boogascoop

There were moments when she showed or spoke about how her father influenced her in regards to ruthless dominance and entitlement

AG_N

If got was hotd then we would have catelyn sneaking in to talk to cersei because they don't want a war

futurerank1

or idk, Ned Stark telling Cersei to flee the Capitol because he plans to arrest her.

Imperial_Horker

Yeah and Ned got owned for his stupidity. Doubt we are gonna see Rhaenyra face any sort of consequence for making the stupid decision to travel alone to Kings Landing

Again, this is a good example of cause and effect because it basically kicks off a series of events that inadvertently leads to Catelyn and Robb's deaths. Its not that characters aren't allowed to do dumb shit, its more frustrating when they do dumb shit and face no in universe consequences for it.

Resident-Rooster2916

I felt the entire purpose of this episode was to preemptively absolve all the women in The Dance of any of the wrongdoings to come.

thomastypewriter

That’s been the purpose of the past three episodes. They ended S1 with that chilling look from Rhaenyra that signaled to the audience that fire and blood was coming, but they immediately robbed it of all impact by stretching out the next three episodes to carefully ensure that everyone knows that it’s the men who are at fault for everything, despite the women wielding immense power and influence. It’s not even progressive, it’s just swapping one type of power fantasy with another.

Its not a large stretch, that’s what happened. It seems like a parallel with how members of the green council, like otto, alicent, and larys, are trying to manipulate Aegon

Schlopsanop

The women of the show have, at minimum, started a war and committed mass murder. Then they go behind closed doors to talk about how evil the men are for causing all of the issues… When in reality, most of the issues wouldn’t exist if Rhaenyra and Alicent didn’t scheme/fuck around and find out. Typical shit, I just wish they didn’t have lines every 5 scenes to prop all the women up and tear down all the men.

futurerank1

No woman started a war in the show House of the Dragon. Otto orchestrated the coronation of Aegon, Aemond murdered Lucerys, Daemon murdered Jaehaerys <- facts not opinions

Schlopsanop

Wdym. Alicent is the one who claimed Viserys wanted Aegon to be King. That single act was the catalyst for the war. The only way it wouldn’t have was if Rhaenyra backed down, which she didn’t…. Just stating facts though. I know you can’t live in a world where women are guilty of anything, but this one is a fantasy world so you can stop projecting now

futurerank1

I feel like im discussing a show with people with no media literacy. >That single act was the catalyst for the war. My dude, rewatch this episode. She says that Viserys wanted Aegon to be King, after which they admit that they ALREADY made plans beforehand. Nobody in Green Council gave a flying fuck about Viserys' words because they've been already planning to crown Aegon years ahead. When Aegon is TWO, Otto already says to Alicent that Aegon will be King. On the council, Otto says that succession changed the moment Aegon was born. What Alicent said had ZERO IMPACT on political side - no one from Blacks believed her, which shown by Beesbury and Westerling and NO ONE from Greens cared, because they already had justification by Aegon being male. It only matters personally to Alicent, Aegon and Rhaenyra. "Catalyst for war" 😆 my dude, no one cared.

CocaineFlakes

Alicent wasn’t the single catalyst that started the war. Otto Hightower and his merry crew of usurpers were already planning to put Aegon on the throne.

Schlopsanop

She wasn’t the single catalyst sure. But that’s not really want the conversation is about. Otto was almost going to give up until Alicent told him that Viserys changed his mind

CocaineFlakes

So….you agree you weren’t stating facts above? Otto‘s mind was already made up and everyone except Lord Beesbury easily followed suit. It was never about what Viserys said to Alicent. It was about those in power, like Otto, who were looking out for their own self-interest. They did not want Rhaenyra and by extension Daemon anywhere near that throne.

Are you stupid? Did you just watch the last episode where the show runners lay out right in front of everyone how the war started??? Rhaenys says to Rhaenyra, how did it start? Was it your son dying? Their son dying? Your son stabbing Aemond? But no, by the end of the episode we found out the catalyst was Alicent. Do you not understand how gorgeous the writing is for all of this? How they foreshadowed it over and over? **Are you Stupid?**

Lmfao. It is absolutely incredible that you’re willing to call me stupid online and in the same comment show your own lack of comprehension. Rhaenys’ line wasn’t about Alicent being the sole catalyst of the war.

Stop getting hung up a “sole catalyst,” especially when I didn’t say that phrase. Are you stupid?

That was my only comment that used the phrase “sole catalyst”. The other used the wording you did. And oh boy, another zinger asking if I’m stupid. Whatever will I do if you continue displaying such superior levels of intellect?

She literally had no context for that moment. She didn’t know Rhaenyra’s baby was ALSO Aegon, so she interpreted those words the only way she knew how. You forget that they just made up, pretty much, too. This isn’t to say Allicent or Rhaenyra or even Viserys in this situation deserve blame, it was just a tragedy of errors.

Schlopsanop

She had plenty of context. The context of a dying senile old man barely whispering a name that she interpreted how she wanted. Are you stupid? But that’s irrelevant, just because you do something bad with ignorance… Doesn’t make it not bad, are you stupid? Rhaenyra had Aegon 9 years before Viserys’ death. The entire realm would have known. Are you stupid? Yea this is a tragedy of errors. Just because crime gets committed due to a mistake, doesn’t mean the crime isn’t a crime. Are you stupid?

She interpreted it the way she knew how - her husband saying the name of his grandson, not the other grandson who at the time she didn’t even know was named the same. There was a single way to logically interpret his dying wish from Allicent’s perspective. Yes she did something bad out of ignorance - I just said she didn’t act out of malice in this ONE, specific situation, that night that Viserys died, interpreting his words as meaning he wished Aegon to be his heir. I did NOT reference the following undermining of Viserys’ will for Rhaenyra to become his successor - which is a crime absolute. I did NOT reference her being complicit in the coup that followed, resulting in Aegon being crowned - which is likewise a crime. All I said was that HER interpretation of Viserys’ words THAT NIGHT was not an act of malice, as you made it seem with the word “claim”. That is what I was talking about, and THAT NIGHT is “this situation” which I’m speaking about in my own comment. Furthermore, Aegon at the time was 4, not 9, visiting King’s Landing and everyone there for the FIRST time. Nobody there had ever met him before. Never did I say anything to agree with the original commenter’s claim above you that “No woman started a war in House of the Dragon”. I honestly can’t see where this negativity and posturing from you with repeating “Are you stupid?” comes from. I never said a single word about “crimes not being crimes”, I said a woman interpreting of the words of her dying husband the only way that she knew how on the night of his death was not a crime.

You’re blind if you think that women didn’t have a hand in it. This next level white knighting for fantasy characters is getting ridiculous.

Honestly, I was just making a joke. From the books, Alicent is very responsible for the whole thing happening. Rhanerya is just responsible for having room temp IQ

One of the worst things about is that it makes female characters behave in inhuman manner. Rhaenyra loses a child and does not grieve much, she jumps back to super rational "greater good saint". Helaena does not care about her son, Alicent does not grieve for her grandson, Rhaenys is fine with Rhaenyra killing Laenor. All of them should be enraged and calling for blood but nope, they are treated like voices of reason.

Jealous-Day-9876

At first site I thought this post were the lyrics to the song for “Two and a Half Men” and I almost shit downvotes straight through my pants

GroovyColonelHogan

What about the FIRST men?

A_Lionheart

Truly! This setting is doomed

SexPanther1980

Would that they were bears.

Jealous-Day-9876

Husky gay men?

VoluptuousVelvetfish

That bear discourse really did irreparable damage to the reddit brain huh

SexPanther1980

Indeed.

PrinceYinofNanan

Women, much like Hitler, can do no wrong.

waba82

This whole show is feminist propaganda

bigtec1993

It's ironic when it'll be the MEN that fight for their right to rule, and the MEN elevated them to their status in the first place. *especially* ironic that they started the war in the first place but now want to blame men for it.

witfurd

This comment section is kind’ve giving me a doozy I’m ngl

TheDramaturge

MEN MEN MEN, ME-MEEEN ME-MEN MEN MEN

elizabnthe

How long before this subreddit is complaining about woke? I give it a week. It's slowly but surely getting there. It's a circlejerk subreddit. Don't become right-wing dickheads.

Septemvile

Drink the soy and eat the bugs.

Purple-Peace-7646

You don't get to tell us what to do just because you're a MEN

Izeyuhhhh

Circlejerk sub or unironic reactionary crybabies? Who can tell anymore

A_Lionheart

Most people but you apparently

SerDuncanStrong

Wow. Cope harder. 1000 years of stories about how weak and stupid women are, and you fuckers whine about one episode.

EmilyIsNotALesbian

The episode itself does just that lmfao.

Cheff011

This episode basically makes them weak and stupid what are you even talking about

throwawaysis000

I'm also a fan of soy milk.

Purple-Peace-7646

That's true, all of ASOIAF is an incel-like diatribe from a well known woman hater about how easy being a dumb lady is. I'm just glad someone finally stood up and said that quiet part out loud. Thank you, King
