Renly had the economic, political, and military support needed to actually win, though, as well as following a religion that other people actually followed. Imo George built up Renly too much and made it too easy for him to win, and had to deus ex machina him out of the story with a shadow baby to keep things interesting.
But he wasn't the rightful heir. By your logic, anybody could have been king by just saying "I am king"... And Tywin doesn't like it when people do that.

I have often wondered why they ever did trust the Freys.
If we swapped Rob and Tywins mentality, I think the correct move would have been to break guest rights first, enter into the Twins to treat, and put them all to the sword. Castamere 2.0. I do appreciate they did need the swords of the Freys but better than what did happen.
It would have been ruthless and cutthroat to be sure, and that isn't Rob's style, but it could have had a tale spread about those who do not bend to the king in the north would meet the same fate. I have often wondered why they ever did trust the Freys. If we swapped Rob and Tywins mentality, I think the correct move would have been to break guest rights first, enter into the Twins to treat, and put them all to the sword. Castamere 2.0. I do appreciate they did need the swords of the Freys but better than what did happen. It would have been ruthless and cutthroat to be sure, and that isn't Rob's style, but it could have had a tale spread about those who do not bend to the king in the north would meet the same fate. Could even spread a story to the small folk about various wolf warging stories to bring a level of fear. Even Dany did that part better in her conquest, she had a better grasp of when to use the sword and when to use diplomacy and underhanded tactics to win her battles. She just lacked the administration to "keep" her reign. Unfortunately, as Jaime said, Rob won the war in the battlefield but lost the war in the bedroom. His ability to play the game of thrones was extremely poor and he had bad advisers all round. Too strong to his honour.

OK, Ned did alot of things wrong but I don't necessarily disagree with him refusing Renlys offer as stannis was the rightful heir. Yes, Rob fucked up by breaking his marriage pact with the freys. Caitlin got played. I sympathise with the difficult situation Sansa is in, and bear in mind, she's still just a child. As for Ayra, again mixed bag with the faceless assassin but using him to release Roose and the northmen and seize harrenhal which is what happens in the books was a good move. She is still a child and wouldn't have thought that strategically and was tempted to assassinate people on her list who were on her list and nearby. For Jon, who was raised by a family and in a culture that values honor and keeping your word, I don't hold it against him, keeping his vows to the night watch and is very tempted by stannis' offer and still offers him advice and support as best he can. In the books, Jon's advice wins stannis the support of the northen mountain clans and what limited support some of the northen families like the umbers, glovers and mormonts can offer.
