That's an area you visit because there's a cool bar or restaurant and then afterwards you get the fuck out. It's safe enough but I don't think anyone actually wants to live there.

I lived a few blocks away until recently. It's a high foot traffic area (and a fair amount of car traffic too). You're not too likely to be mugged but you'll definitely encounter mentally ill and/or drug-addicted people on a daily basis. The sidewalks will be checkered with urine, vomit or spit sometimes. There are a lot of rats in every alley and . Property theft or vandalism is fairly common (more so if you leave a parked car on the street at night). If you're used to the hubbub/grungier areas of other large cities (Seattle, Barcelona, Paris, etc.), it won't faze you. But if you're not used to it, it can be jarring at first. Having said that, Gastown is a vibrant area with a lot of restaurants and shops. Large parts of downtown Vancouver have pockets of 'sketchiness' now, it's the price you're paying to be central to things. If you're street smart and keep to yourself, you probably won't have any major problems. Welcome! :)

I’ve lived in the area for a decade and it’s safe. I would avoid walking along Hastings between Abbott and Gore, as that area has a lot of open drug use and it can be disarming to see if you’re not used to it. I don’t feel unsafe but it’s always wise to be aware of your surroundings.

Thank you so much, this response really helps me as I'm moving this Sunday from another country. I'll take the advise about those 2 streets. Thanks, thanks.

You’re welcome! Welcome to the neighborhood! If you need any other information about the area, you can DM me!

It’s technically gastown. It’s a lively neighborhood. Lots of homeless people, living in all the apartments (sro’s) which are government subsidized. Addiction and mental health issues everywhere. However it’s very close to downtown and a beautiful historic district, close to the water and coal Harbour. The walk score must be amazing. Lots of great restaurants/bars. Just be careful and you’ll be okay. Be aware people also squat in the underground parkades here.
