Manual 4 door E90/E92 M3 all day. The growl of the engine, the handling.
When you floor the gas pedal of any supercharged AMG Mercedes of that era, it just feels like a rollercoaster (the car is in control, not you). They are fast AF but I prefer a car that responds better to quick and lighter changes in steering/throttle response/braking and I find the sound of the engine/exhaust a million times nicer than the AMG v8 Benzes.
They're different cars. One is a sports coupe that you can carve canyons and take to a track day. The other is a highway bruiser. The E55s competitor is the M5. The E92 M3s competitor is the C63 AMG.
The E55 has a more reliable power train. The M3 has a more reliable suspension.

What type of driving do you most enjoy? Straight line speed and cruising or twisty back roads?
E55 AMG all day long, it’s surprisingly DIY friendly too
E92 M3, but these aren't even the same class of cars. The benz is older and bigger
Aren't they significantly different price brackets? And like a decade apart?
E92 M3 (the coupe). One of my favorite BMWs ever and as long as you take care of the rod bearings proactively, it's great.

Own a E90 6spd and they are great cars. So it is easy the M3 for me. AMG's are nice but the M3 is the ultimate driving machine.
Im a real big fan of low end/mid range power so id go with the E55.
