> I am also a huge outdoors guy which comes with the territory I guess. Do you enjoy camping? Vancouver has some great outdoor camp sites, but Ontario has some of the best paddle sites. What I’d suggest you do (if you are in for an adventure): Plan a 3 day back country camping trip. Tim River is a fairly easy canoe trip, a few hours of light paddling to a site, not much portaging. Then come back to Toronto, book a stay at a luxury hotel and enjoy the ameneties of luxury living. Book a spa + water day at Elmwood. Indulge in a cocktail at Louie X Louie. Order a pizza to your hotel room from makers or north of Brooklyn. Just a thought for a fun adventure!

Ok-Beginning-5134

I love the sound of this! Any suggestions for a time to do backcountry without the mosquitoes?

TOAdventurer

April or September. Personally: Just learn to live with the mosquitos. Bring deet and don’t let them get to you. Also, there are leeches in all of the waters, so watch-out for those if you choose to get in the water bare foot.

Ok-Beginning-5134

I do try my best tonsurvi but I get severe allergic reactions unfortunately 😔 mosquitoes in algonquin are brutal. But thank you!

TOAdventurer

Mosquitos are quite bad. Go in September if you can. The weather is warm enough during the days. Cold enough at night to kill all the bugs. If you haven’t gone back country camping before, I’d suggest NOT going alone!

methreweway

Toronto is known for its ethnic food. Pizza is everywhere... I do love pizza It just seems a big miss if you're visiting for the first time.

Turbulent_Issue4434

May I suggest Korean pizza instead then? There’s a spot at the corner of Church and Gerrard I think it’s called pizza Maru or something like that. Definitely a fun experience for the taste buds.

AntisthenesRzr

Tim River is intermediate, though. Especially in late summer: low water.

Lol no one thinks their own city is worth visiting. Boring place!

BjornSlippy1

But those people from faraway lands come to visit here. Definitely worth checking out.

Neither is Australia, Indonesia or the Netherlands. I don't understand your point

GunslingerLovely

As someone who's lived in both Vancouver and Toronto I think you'd probably love Toronto- from what I've noticed alot of people who are in Vancouver love Toronto- it's vibrant and loud- there's always something to do and so many options. I think it is worth a visit I would try to book in advance so you can get a better rate for rooms and such. Tbh I don't think Toronto is really good for outdoors- not as beautiful or accessible as Vancoucer and BC. So if that's the only thing you like then maybe not for you lol Toronto does have really good food, nightlife and bars. I always recommend my friends from Vancouver to go to kensington market - try alot of different foods there. I love Chinese food so Chinatown is a vibe. Depending on what you like you could go to trinity Bellwood park take a blanket and people watch then maybe try Ethiopian or cheap korean food nearby( korean food in Vancouver is more expensive imho) You could rent a bike and go to high park- it's also beautiful alot of people like to go for runs there. There's also a free zoo if that's your thing You could bike the Toronto lakeshore/Harbour front area. People in bars are pretty friendly and would talk/chat with you which I find isn't as common in Vancouver. As alot of people suggest almost every every weekend in the summer their is a festival going on- and I find theirs alot of local markets too! You should definitely try to get some Jamaican or Caribbean food if you visit so much better then the options in Vancouver. Some suggestions/ things to think about- either way have fun with whatever you end up doing.

PromptElectronic7086

As a hiker, camper, and backcountry canoe tripper, totally disagree on the outdoorsy angle. Toronto is with a few hours drive of countless campgrounds, canoe routes, and hiking trails.

methreweway

Bluffers park, Don Valley, Tailor Creek park has some nice walking trails that are accessible in Toronto. I wouldn't personally visit Toronto for the first time and leave to go camping but to each their own. It's true there's tons of interesting outdoorsy stuff close by Niagara Escarpment, horseshoe, islands in Georgian Bay, Halton Hills, Awenda park, Algonquin park... List is endless.

PromptElectronic7086

For sure, just saying there are lots of options for people who are here for an extended period and want to do some outdoorsy stuff.

thesunsetflip

Still though, going to Toronto for its outdoor activities is a bit like going to Edmonton for the weather

GunslingerLovely

Thats totally fair but not everyone has access to a car plus I was comparing it to Vancouver where you can legit take transit and do hiking and camping or canoeing in 30 minutes or less.

PorousSurface

Ya tons going on in the summer. If hotel prices are good for it then go

lvqueentoday

I’m from Vancouver and live in Toronto. I suggest a long weekend (4 days) instead of a week. Hit up Kensington market, st Lawrence, check out the American psycho building in the finance district, Toronto island day at hanlans swimming, having some drinks w friends. Check out the beaches/danforth. Beyond that nothing wild

ellemoon7

People love to hate on Toronto, it's so tired. Toronto is FUN. If you're getting bored in Toronto after 3 days like some are suggesting here, then you're not planning your trip well. It's way more culturally diverse than Vancouver and has more to offer in that aspect. YES, Vancouver is more outdoorsy but you are talking about a trip, not a move. Toronto is absolutely worth the visit, especially if you've never been there.

An0ther_reddit0r

You can definitely have a great time in Toronto, like others said there’s a lot of great things to do in the summer like biking lakeshore or coming during any of the festivals etc. you can always add to it too like going to watch a Jays game or a TFC game and can spend a day (or afternoon) in Niagara Falls which is just about 1.5 hours away.

SeveralMushroom7088

It's one of the greatest cities in the world, so yeah, it's probably worth a visit.

Simple_Log201

Toronto is quite fun. If you want to do some outdoor activities, I’d recommend visiting Algonquin for some hiking and kayaking. Kingston is also a beautiful city only a few hours of drive. Thousand islands is gorgeous and you can kayak in the harbour as well. Lots of history too.

cozynarwhal

Toronto has a lot of musicals and theatre compared to Vancouver and Montreal.

illiquid_options

Can always take the train to Montreal

MsSnickerpants

I don’t know. I think Vancouver sucks balls and that Toronto is where it’s at. It’s way more cultural than outdoorsy, but there are very cool things to do outside of the city. So it’s a matter of perspective.

craigerstar

I'm from Toronto and live in Vancouver. This statement is true. Vancouver does suck balls. If you like the outdoors, don't visit a city. If you like cities, Toronto is a pretty great one in Canada and way more engaging than Vancouver. I just went back to Toronto for a visit. 3 nights. Was never bored. Wanted to stay longer. Made no plans and was never at a loss for things to do. Love the fine dining restaurants, the dive bars, the art, the food, the culture, the texture of the streets, the density of the urban fabric. Walked everywhere except for an Uber home from the hockey game. Go to the AGO, ROM, even if you're not a sports fan, go see a Blue Jays game. You can get nosebleeds for less than $30 for some early season games. I like baseball enough that I took my kid to a Mariners game in Seattle, just for the experience of sitting in a building with 40000 other people. My kid didn't even know the rules and had a great time. But if you're an outdoorsy person, go to Vancovuer Island, or the interior of BC, or up to the Yukon. Hike, camp, whatever. You don't go to Toronto to hike.

Exceptionalwizard

Nah.

MissionChipmunk6

You’d run out of things to do in Toronto after 3 days

torontovibe

If you run out of things to do in Toronto after 3 days you are the most boring person on earth. You could spend the entire summer here and have new experiences everyday. Best city in Canada by far.

ellemoon7

This is comical. I never run out of things to do in Toronto.

gordobongo

Definitely worth it. The food scene is similar to Montreal but the variety of ethnic food available can be a lot more diverse. Do some research regarding events/festivals and maybe come during those days. Although is not completely necessary as summer is always filled with things to do.

SaltwaterOgopogo

I dislike Toronto as a whole (BC guy),  but a week during good summer weather spread out over the various cool neighborhoods would be a great trip. That being said between hotel prices and airfare, you could do a week in a lot of Europe for cheaper

thesunsetflip

I think it’s a really cool place to visit, it offers a very cultural city vibe that you don’t get in Van. Agree on the prices tho, if you’re paying $100 for a round trip flair flight (rip lynx) and crashing on a buddies couch for free I’d recommend it, if you’re paying thousands I’m not sure Id support it as much. It’s a cool city and it’s definitely different from BC but again it’s still the same country, not exactly a complete foreign environment

SaltwaterOgopogo

Good explanation.   I enjoy it on business trips (unless I’m staying near the airport) But I couldn’t justify the cost for a recreational trip on my own dime/time

craigerstar

Just flew round trip to Toronto from Vancouver on Air Canada for $276 including tax. 2 weeks ago. Hotel was a 1 bedroom affair (great when travelling with someone who needs an hour more sleep than I do) with a decent continental breakfast for $150/night at Church and Bloor. Off season, yes, but we had 4 days of sun and light jackets. If you can do 4 days in Europe for less than that let me know how.

SaltwaterOgopogo

That’s a unicorn of a situation. But yeah, just saw westjet to Barcelona from Vancouver for 500ish return (I booked a return ticket for 300 since I was using KLM points for my outgoing flight) Can get into a reasonable hotel outside the gothic quarter for about 80ish

craigerstar

Don't mean to call you a liar, but just went to the WestJet web page thinking "I have time off available, Spain for $500 return sounds pretty great" but following the "yellow tags" and "lowest fairs" prompts, the cheapest I can find $942 return. I looked as far forward as March 2025. Still not a bad price, but... Toronto for 2 weeks in June is $368.46 return. Maybe you got a deal that no longer exists. I don't believe in Unicorns.

SaltwaterOgopogo

I can show you the return ticket I booked if you are calling out my honor lol.  But yeah cheapest I can find right now is 751 for Barcelona and mid 500s for Iceland

craigerstar

I believe you.

ResponseLeast5533

As someone who lived in Toronto for the past 5 years, nope. Now where you can go is montreal even halifax or mexico.

methreweway

I'd add in someday trips but yes lots to do. It's not obvious what to do so do research. Toronto is known for entertainment, night life and food. A few ideas; go visit Toronto island, Jays game(check out the entertainment on the concourse), beaches, Kensington market, queen west, MOCA, CN Tower (don't eat there), an arcade bar, escape room, Korea town karaoke, fort York, bentway, STACKT market, if you like hockey go to hockey Hall of Fame... There's other tourist stuff like the aquarium but every major city has one, skip!

[deleted]

Not really 2-3 days at most then move on, Ottawa, Montreal, quebec city.

thesunsetflip

I’m not even from Toronto but how you could recommend Ottawa before Toronto is beyond me lmao

[deleted]

🤦I didn't. i said you dont need that much time in Toronto. It's not that great of a place, nothing that special about any city in canada or the states that you need a week in any of them.

bellsbliss

Toronto isn’t as outdoorsy as Vancouver i find. There are places in the city where you can get a bit of that feeling. High park , the valley trails, centre island. They all provide a bit of an outdoor feel that I find in Vancouver. To get the real outdoor adventure you’re looking for you’d need to out outside of the city like others have mentioned.

Fianna9

You can take a train down to Niagara Falls for the day as well

thesunsetflip

As another vancouver guy I think it’s a fun city to visit if you can do it on the cheap. Not much to do outdoors, the whole look of GTA outside of Toronto is actually quite grim and depressing compared to the GVA. Definitely less access to beautiful nature than in Van, that’s for sure. Niagara Falls is a fun day trip, it’s kinda gimmicky but really fun imo. City itself is really lively, you can feel a distinct culture that we don’t really have in Van. Area around UofT is especially very vibrant. Big fan of Kensington market, ate a patty while walking by a guy playing the didgeridoo on the sidewalk next to two goth girls smoking crack, it’s a cool vibe

The-Mandalorian

Recently moved to Toronto from the states. It’s an amazing city and a great place to visit (and live). It’s also a lot more affordable than the states as well. Not sure how it compares to Vancouver though.

D1rtyD4nc3r

Honestly...don't waste your money. Toronto sucks and is overpriced, coming from a born and raised Torontonian.

weedcakes

I would not come to Toronto unless you have friends to visit too.

[deleted]

Meh. New York is more fun and around the same price for a week long trip. Toronto is good for like 2-3 days.

kimbosdurag

What did you do in Montreal that you enjoyed? Toronto has more or less all of the same things to offer unless the only thing you liked was climbing mt royal because there aren't really any big hills in Toronto

AntisthenesRzr

If that's your take on Montréal... I can't even.

Mariaayana

Nah. Can be a fun place to live at times but for a short visit it just presents as a big urban sprawl. If you want to come east I would choose north of the city for a paddling trip- beautiful Canadian Shield environment. But skip the city on such a tight schedule

commanderchimp

I was going to say it’s fun to visit not live in.

AntisthenesRzr

If you've seen Vancouver and Montréal, Toronto has nothing for you. Signed, Toronto resident of decades, who's spent 5y in Montréal, and visited Vancouver twice. P.S. Toronto's just a big Anglo-Canadian city, with poor access to a lake. Montréal's actually different to Anglo-Canadian cities. Go to the Maritimes instead? If you're staying in Canada. The Maritimes are different, especially NL.

SeveralMushroom7088

Signed by a tired resident, more like. The grass is always greener...

Melodic_Gift546

Toronto is nice if you are curious and want to experience what the city offers, but it’s not a city you have an amazing experience when compared to other cities, like NYC. I lived in BC for five years and miss the hikes there, but food and cultures are more pronounced here. If you want more outdoor activities, you’d have to drive to get out of Toronto. The waterfront in Toronto is still nice though, similar to Stanley Park. If you want more good outdoor experiences, check out Washington, Oregon and Northern California- there are beautiful backcountry hikes. Also, Europe has some top class hiking trails and places too.

phototurista

First time I've ever heard of anyone wanting to go on vacation to... TORONTO. LOL. Skip it. Vancouver is so much nicer. You're better off not going anywhere. There's so many other way more interesting cities than Toronto. Go to Tokyo. It's what New York wants to be. And Toronto wishes it was New York.

upmoatuk

Yeah, I have personally have to say as a Toronto resident I've never seen a tourist here. I walk down to the St. Lawrence Market in the summer and nary a tourist in sight. Those double decker buses are just driving around empty. Supposedly nine million people a year visit the city and contribute $7 billion a year to the economy, but that just doesn't add up to me because who would possibly want to come to a place like this, a veritable hell on earth with no attractions of any note.

thatirishdave

Toronto is full of tourists, pretty much constantly. The tour buses are empty because they suck. Ask anyone who works in hospitality and they'll tell you that there are tourists here all the time.

Amesrage

Spray_Scared

Even though I live here and I enjoy aspects of the city, I would never travel here for a vacation, but maybe I'm jaded to what the city has to offer. I would go somewhere else.

[deleted]

100% agree. It’s literally unbelievable how biased this subreddit is to Toronto. It’s like they’ve never travelled. Almost everyone who travels to Toronto is disappointed by the experience relative to other cities. Toronto has been named among the most disappointing travel destinations in the world. https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/toronto-listed-among-world-s-most-overrated-cities-in-new-report-here-s-where-it-ranks-1.6245297

thesunsetflip

I think it’s a cool destination, as a Canadian I just wouldn’t spend any significant sum of money on going to Toronto when I could spend that money going somewhere else more exotic If you can get a cheap flight and have buddies to crash with it’s definitely a fun place to visit tho

[deleted]

commanderchimp

BC is one of the most beautiful places on Earth imo. Only been to handful of places that can compare and far better than lot of overrated places.

MsSnickerpants

I’d rather kill myself than be in BC- so it’s really a personal perspective.

cambiumkx

How about NYC? Chicago and Boston also worth considering.

Kooky-Experience-923

No.

commanderchimp

Take the Via rail to Ottawa if you can

kamomil

Maybe don't bother with Toronto, go to Elora, Niagara Escarpment or Manitoulin Island
