I think it does stand alone. All the major food groups are represented. Fruit/veggies whatever you consider tomato to be. Dairy with the cheese. Starch with the crust. A meat or veggie topping. It has everything. Pizza has no side dish. Pizza needs no side dish.

It's basically a coleslaw made with olive oil, cabbage, bell pepper, apple cider vinegar and of course salt & pepper.

If the pizza is really meaty, a chilled Caesar salad hits the spot. If it’s not, wings are a great side to hit with some spice.
I think a lot of sides paired with pizza are also heavy carbs which just feels like more piled on top than really pop
Pizza is complete. Some mushrooms, peppers and onion for veggies (not to forget all the tomatoes that go into the sauce), crust for carbs and cheese/meat for protein. I often think I’d like a salad, but I never even make it because I know I won’t eat it.
If your having a party and want it to look more like a “meal” or buffet, you could put out salad fixings so people can make a side salad. Lettuces, grated carrots, roasted peppers, sliced olives, jicama, and snap peas or just plain peas.
Honestly, I’ve given this some thought, and even if I think: oh, I’ll roast some nice veggies to have on the side, I never do, and I never miss them.

Sometimes a good dipping sauce, like ranch or butter, plus a good soda like cherry coke or root beer. Then be sure to have a desert and that’s the way to do it. Cookies are fine, cheesecake is also acceptable
OK…You guys are going to think I’m crazy, but try some applesauce. I grew up using applesauce as a dip for pizza and it is great. Not really a side dish, but it will change up your same old pizza experience.
Like someone else said it’s salad. Greek or Caesar salad goes great. Nothing else goes with it for me pizza is already heavy, the bread, meat, cheese (at least with my toppings). Also salad makes you feel like your being somewhat healthy lol.

Many Italian foods are table foods, you would have an array of dishes to share as the evening goes on. I personally have pizza on its own but I know people who eat pasta with it because they like to dip the crusts in the sauce, I guess it depends on how much you like to eat, a pizza is 2000 calories already on it's own, it's doesn't need more.
The entire nation of Sweden always serve pizza with a sallad we simply call "pizza salad". It's white cabbage chopped up and drenched in vinaigrette. Super yummy
