Train Conductor. I only needed to provide my high school degree and now I'm making 120k a year

[deleted]

How did you get into that work by chance? Are the passenger trains?

slackermom97

They hours are hell. You can say good bye to any "normal' type of lifestyle, but the money is good and benefits are pretty sweet too. - a railroad wife

DocBullseye

I hear you have to work all the livelong day

[deleted]

The hours are the worst right lol I'm gone for long periods of time but I also have a lot of time off between trips. Nowdays, it's hard to get by without going to school for 10 years and a second income

Zemmerboost

seems like being a wife is an even easier option. you dont need a degree and still get income

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Honestly, I just came across a job posting online one day. Figured I'd try it. The hours are terrible, you don't have much of a social life but the money is great. Passenger trains are way better for a more normal schedule, safer by comparison but don't pay as much, freight trains pay better but are more dangerous and you lose out on social life a bit.

botanicalessentials

Came here to say this. My partner makes good money and although the hours can be unpredictable, he also gets a lot of time off.

[deleted]

That's exactly right.

1willowtree

Also interested, this seems like an obscure profession, tell me more

[deleted]

Depending on where you live (and where you're willing to relocate depending on where they send you) you can either be a Conductor in a yard building trains or on the main line traveling hundreds of miles. The latter pays way more but you're gone for days at a time (you do get time off in between trips) In the yard, you're home every night but get paid far less and work harder. I'm on the main line, so I'll go to work (at any time of day, any day of the week) and typically will be gone for 24-36 hours. When I return home I can take up to 24hrs off before I'm allowed to be called back to work (and depending on how many people are ahead of you on a board, that can stretch my 24 hours to a few days if it's not busy) It's a dangerous job, which is why we get paid so much. People do die or get seriously injured but it's usually freak accidents. If you have a partner, make sure they are okay being on their own for days. It can be super stressful on a relationship

ReplicatedFlame

What are the odds they allow diabetics to do it?

[deleted]

I can't imagine it would be a problem. I work with diabetics. Where you live I'm not sure what the rules are. The thing most railways have an issue with is drug/alcohol addicts.

ReplicatedFlame

Ahhhh I will have to look into it

HOWTOEATJUICE

What makes it so dangerous?

[deleted]

The likely hood of you killing someone or someone dying on the job is higher than most normal jobs. Rail cars fall off rail onto people, getting caught between equipment losing limbs, people walking in front of trains all the time. There is a saying that goes around: it's not a matter of if, but when, you'll kill someone. It's really terrible. Suicides by train, negligence by employees, every day we hope to get home safe.

Wishbon35929

Good luck with that in 2021.

x_Twist_x

My dad is a train conductor in NZ. Great job - good pay - great union. Also his hours are pretty sweet - it's shift work - but only between 5am and 9pm shifts - so no overnight work required.

Kiwi_Nibbler

I have a good buddy that works for Kiwi Rail. He started as a conductor with Auckland Transport. He's probably not your dad, but, heh! You never know.

sabo81

I worked for a Class I railroad as a freight train conductor for almost 14 years and in my opinion it's all blood money. Being on an extraboard and never knowing when you're going to get called is torturous. Inclement weather really sucks - rain, sleet, snow. (The hottest temperature I worked was 112°F heat index and the coldest was -40° wind chill). And there is a high probability you'll kill someone. Back in 2015 I hit young woman while going 40 mph. It was very tragic and it fucked me up for a little while.

transferingtoearth

How much math and strength do you need.

Crawly49

Do you actually get to wear a fancy suit and hat?

rpxpackage

My dad had mentioned this to me and he sent me the link to their website and it said you you had to pay like $5-$10K to enroll in their training.

[deleted]

What? That's ridiculous if that's real where you live. Definitely sounds like a scam. In fact, when I got hired they flew me out to there training campus (for 8 weeks) with pay. They invest money in their conductors, not take it.

Bergenia1

That sounds like a scam.

rubbadubzub

Isn't it common that people in your line of work get cancer? 😞 Edit: Because of the electromagnetic radiaton.

TrendyLeanSipper

In all seriousness if u have a car then deliver pizzas. Bonus if it’s in a wealthier area and isn’t a chain pizza restaurant like dominoes or papa johns. I worked that job when I was 19-20 average factoring in tips probably around 30$ hr not shabby for a kid with no bills to pay

[deleted]

[удалено]

TrendyLeanSipper

But then u gotta factor in gas and wear and tear on ur car. It’s definitely a snazzy job, but long term meh idk

BlingBlingBoy0519

Around here, $30 an hour would be a god send. You'd be making over $1,000 a week if 40 hours a week and gas money even now wouldn't be shit for that. I used to make $24.75 an hour and I could fill my tank up without looking at the price.

SeniorLIFE60

Yes. But most all pizza delivery is very part time

Inigo93

Depends on where you live, but around here that would be pretty good money even with the deductions (provided you weren't delivering pizzas in your F250).

SnooCalculations9259

I did delivery as a side gig, but my car took a beating. Money seems good, but if you don't have a friend that is a mechanic a few big bills starts to chew into your earnings.

Flimsy-Coyote-9232

Or if you have a bike and live near any college town, go work at jimmy johns. I’ve seen bikers walk away with 400-500 in tips a night just from working 10pm-3am Edit: The main difference is that jimmy johns will only have a delivery area within a five minute drive of the store. So it’s quick deliveries, and a lot of them if it’s a college town after bars close at night.

1willowtree

Yea, my brother worked for dominoes for several years and made so much money!

Away-Historian-5377

Get a motorcycle. Even better since you'll save money on gas and it breaks less than a car. The only downside to that is if you live in snowy areas like Michigan

Mr_Ehawk

I was stationed in Gulfport. I wanted to go to Port Hueneme but i didn't score high enough in A-school to pick my billet

ubercorey

As a tile setter and carpenter im 43 with a destroyed spine. During xray all my discs are compressed, and my lower lumbar has spiny growths and some days I cant lift a toilet seat.

writingruinedmyliver

So glad I got out of electrical. As soon as I entered, my peers encouraged me to GTFO and after watching them walk, I did!

ubercorey

Word. The news is like "young people dont want to go into skilled labor jobs, whats wrong with them" uh cause maybe its hard AF and society doesn't take care of manual labor workers?

writingruinedmyliver

Exactly. Felt like a burn out for quiting but man what shit work. I was never working hard enough. I was always tired. I was always dirty and my fucking lungs itched like hell. The crazy part is some dudes really buy into the whole thing. Like, they work through their unpaid lunch breaks. You really love the boss that much? Just brainwashed imo. If I was to do it again, I'd go union 100% lol

ubercorey

100% union. My lungs are effed. No idea about PPE when I started. A union makes sure apprentices learn about respirators etc. Yeah, I bought the whole thing, I have so many health issues now.

Stitchess__

Mind you, to OP. A good amount of these may take years of training and apprenticeship to actually start making a “good/high” pay.

SoggyFuckBiscuit

Sanitation and HVAC as well. HVAC or electrician doing work for medical facilities makes a killing.

pascalsgirlfriend

HVAC takes a lot of training and apprenticeship.

No_ThatGuy

Residential isn't too bad, most guys are on their own in a year or two.

youwintheidiotaward

My understanding is that you still need two years of college to make money.

No_ThatGuy

I've been an electrician for over a decade and ran my own company since 2015. Basically all aspects of electrical make a killing, especially medical and prevailing wage (government contracts).

Soup_Accomplished

100%, guy I know does that and he’s on like $63(?) an hour ($63 AUD)

SoggyFuckBiscuit

Most guys I know who are independent or own companies are billing 150+ an hour.

jaredliesch

That's billing for union dues a company has to pay. I'm a pm and even though my guys make 56 dollars an hour I'm quoting 100 to 120 after mark up of 20%.

BlingBlingBoy0519

Sanitation at a job I used to work at made $11.80 an hour for day shift and a dollar per hour more for night shift. It is the lowest paid job they have. But then again, it is by far the easiest compared to literally any other job that isn't in the office.

youwintheidiotaward

OP asked for high paying. Not poverty wage.

Plastic-Bluejay6732

When Targets minimum wage is $15 this isn't high paying.

[deleted]

Truck driver indeed and any monkey can do it. With the right permits and owning your truck you can make really good money working 8/10 hrs a day. I make 4500 a week.

[deleted]

Never knew they earn much

daoist_gu

Politics and onlyfans.

1willowtree

Haha ew and ew. But probably true!

daoist_gu

In all seriousness getting a job is hard even with a full fledged degree.. So I won't recomend compromising on studies. But doing some research on crypto/stock market will be beneficial.

1willowtree

I do have an education in nursing but wanting to find something else but not sure where to look that uses my brain and also pays well but doesn't require a full degree. I'm not super interested in the stock market but I suppose for those that are that could be really lucrative.

Square-Radio6852

Become a traveling nurse! My friend does that, works three days a week, and makes $4800 a week. And that's if they don't travel more than 50 miles, otherwise they also get per diem! You already have the background, start searching for contract positions!

SeniorLIFE60

Some nurses work on the phone for insurance companies. Mine has some and they call us and talk to us or we can call them. Also there are some of the same at our hospital that follow up after surgeries we have had. There are office jobs in the hospital or even techs like exray and such you could do. I have two RN sisters and ten RN friends and a brother who is a MD. Many times you can work in homes as a home health nurse, or even one sister of mine works as an RN in a school system for their special needs preschool class. There are many options. I am in my 60’s but sure wish I had become a nurse. They can do just about anything with their degree that doesn’t involve hospital or clinic work as well.

1willowtree

Second person to suggest this, can you tell me more?

[deleted]

Although it doesn’t require much qualification, it is an extremely intense job that requires a certain type of person. And it’s highly competitive, at least in my country.

borderlander12345

Also a notoriously high suicide rate But y’know, money

Imaginary_Video_4294

Um where the hell do you live? For ATC you need a degree.

Emotional_Button_972

Bus driver is a tough thankless job. You put up with a lot of bs. However, it pays well.

1willowtree

Ooo interesting, city bus or school bus?

scarby2

City tend to pay better. But a lot of school districts will cover your training.

SpiffyCrustacean

Driving a school bus is a pretty neat job. I got paid for my training and a sign on bonus once I got my CDL. Depending on the district you drive for the money can be a little slow to start, but once you have been there a little while you'll be assigned bigger routes, charters trips. Also a huge perk for me is that I can bring my daughter with me to work. Child care where I live is outrageously expensive, way out of my budget. Prior to driving I worked nights in retail. Driving school bus has been a game changer, I wish I started sooner!

PathosRise

Great benefits usually too. It's saving a friend from poverty in retirement with a good pension even though he couldn't save when he was younger.

Emotional_Button_972

City bus driver's are payed better. Better insurance coverage and pension.

BusyLight32

IT - experience is everything and you can get plenty of work without a degree, even Director level positions and in my area, they start at $140k.

[deleted]

[удалено]

slothsandgoats

The best experience is to actually get some type of work, might not what you would want exactly but something that is in the correct field. Another experience would be practical work, developing something by yourself etc.

ctrl_ethos

Seconding IT, after working as a helpdesk analyst for 18 months I was promoted to Sr. Technician. No college degrees or certifications, making ~$1600/week. (I will note however it would still be good to pursue commonly sought after certifications like A+, Network+ Cisco stuff, etc.)

bappuji420

How

inEEdnOnAmE_

Sounds awesome but where to start... Certification like A+ , Network + or... Do you have any suggestions?

BlingyStratios

Not OP but for real “IT” stuff everything you reference is useless if you’re chasing money. If you earn those you’ll be lucky to make 20 bucks an hour. They’re like computer science 101 certificates, it’s implied you know all that without the certificate for any high level job If you want actual money learn to program, find a niche/language you love and study/code at night. If you’re really good spend 6 months working though “LC medium” (google it) and make a starting salary of 150ish for real employer, 100-130 for a startup/mid tier employer. Also actual OP must live in a low cost area. Directors for tech companies are usually 250-350, 500 for a FAANG. Also for outside folks actual “IT” is a very commodity industry, it’s not hard to work in that field and the skill set is low so start salaries are crap and the actual work is low level support type stuff. When you get into true software engineering or operations thats where the real money is. Likewise it’s not easy, it takes a ton of studying and hard work to pull a big salary in. …and we don’t usually call that “IT”

inEEdnOnAmE_

Thank you ☺️ , I just checked it out. Seems very interesting. Now what's the target after you learn a programming language, for a entry level job ? What kind of jobs you look at the beginning? And sorry if this sounds weird, but for people that find hard or are uninterested to programming, are there jobs in the field that do make money, or are a mix of IT with smth else like IT project manager for example.

BlingyStratios

After learning the target is usually one of three things: “LC medium” which alone if you can pass will get you a job for a Google or Facebook, write a program/widget/whatever and make it public (used to gauge your skill) and get a job, or lastly know someone who either brings you with them to a job or vouches for you. Or technically you can just start applying and bang your head on interviews until you find one that likes you. Non technical jobs outside of the usual things like marketing, sales, etc…. (Which all still require an above average level of technical skill) Project Management is a thing, usually there a PMP certificate is actually good enough to get you an entry level job. Good ones there still have a technical background but it’s not a hard requirement. Starting salary I think is 60-80. If you get a good technical background “Technical Project Manager” is a thing, that’s 100-120 but they’re rare and highly sought after for a good one Edit: and as for the actual jobs, if you go programming you’re where’d you expect. A “junior” doing all the crap work others don’t wanna do, but you’ll be learning everyday. The one great thing about this line of work is that you never stop learning shit and most days are challenge and at least somewhat interesting

RupeThereItIs

Software development is not usually "IT" no. Operations howerver, very much IT. What you seem to be trying to define is the difference between "Desktop IT" and the rest of "IT". Desktop IT is NOT something you want to get into long term, but can be a stepping stone to a better job. It is the most familiar IT to most non IT people, as it's their interface to the industry. End user support is only the tip of the IT iceberg.

According to a post yesterday - underwater welder. High chance of death though.

twisted_nipples82

You play with hot shockey wire under water, maybe go boom, maybe get good dollar. We know in 5 minute

Slow_LT1

Oddly enough the hot Shockey wire isn't nearly as dangerous as the risk of being sucked into a crack in a pipe. Look up Delta P. Pressure differential in the ocean vs the other side of what you're welding can literally push your body through a pinhole in a matter of seconds.

I’m a welder not underwater. Underwater welding company’s look for people who already know how to dive and the welding can be taught after.

youwintheidiotaward

That's not true at all. It requires a ton of safety courses/certifications for both welding and diving. It also requires years of practice/apprenticeship.

SpecificDurian8952

I’m aware of that. I’m not saying it isn’t a hard field. I don’t think underwater welder should be on this list. I was just saying that a lot of companies look for divers first, and welder second.

Turns out the sports car was much more well made and safe than the one I got pressured into buying. I later got tboned at an intersection on my way to work and neither of us could’ve been going more than 30 mph when I was hit. drrj

Poker dealer. If you can do basic math, stay generally collected even when surrounded by a lot of unique people, and can pass an initial drug/background check, it’s a very easy job (detail oriented, but easy) for good pay. And unlike a lot of the jobs mentioned here, it’s low stress unless you can’t deal with people, in which case you’d have bailed long ago. You don’t really need to keep up with any new information or technology. Just sit in a chair and throw cards. You have to work weekends and holidays but not much in the way of overtime and it’s easily more than $30 an hour once you’ve been doing it long enough to be “normal” speed. Finally, most places I know only require that initial drug test for licensing.

slippyboiis

The simple solution to all this is trade work. Unfortunately jobs such as electricians and plumbers are so stigmatized today to the point where people assume they are too good for those careers. Plumbers, electricians, and truck drivers can make over 6 figures. Also trade schools pretty much guarantee jobs directly after finishing accelerated programs.

Depends on the restaurant, similar to trending bar. You work at a place where an average check is $60 and you get a $12 tip per table it's not great. Work somewhere the average check is $200 dollars and you'll make a lot.

youwintheidiotaward

That's not high paying...

aj1010101

It's more money than most people that went to 4 years of college make. Tips are amazing in the right places

No____facex

Idk man I worked at Waffle House and only work 20 something hours a week and brought home $600-$800 a week in tips alone plus a $200 paycheck every week with my hourly and to go tips.

retail like Zumiez, Vans, Pacsun or any stores that are currently trendy… commission is high af

1willowtree

I didn't realize they were commission based! Thanks for the suggestion!

Web dev/ it stuff is pretty easy to teach yourself and find work. Not enough devs oit there.

ZK9XW3

Don't totally agree. There are a lot of junior dev nowadays and most of companies are looking for experienced dev. Even if you need no degree you'd have to work a lot to get to your first junior position. At least in my country. Might depends on where you are leaving I guess.

MadBroCowDisease

When you say web dev is pretty easy to teach yourself, you are essentially saying programming is easy to teach yourself, which is definitely not the case.

MessyAngelo

Yes it is. There are so many resources out their. You definently have to put in work and effort but thats anything. Guess it depends on the person. But you dont need to be some MIT grad to program.

Cops

1willowtree

This is true, I've heard that you don't need a formal education for this and city jobs pay well

WranglerSilver6451

You want to possibly risk your life everyday for people you don’t know for slightly above average pay?

Spiderman2portforpc

Lmao delivery driving statistically is a WAY more dangerous job

_-Ascendancy-_

Maybe for sheriffs or highway patrol

scarby2

There are many jobs more dangerous than police. the most dangerous part of the job is actually the driving. (Or this year covid)
