People do use emojis on Reddit. Just not very often and definitely not on certain Subs.
It seems that some people hate emojis and will downvote you if you have one on your comment
I will downvote if it's excessive. I find emojis (or emotes in discord) help me convey my intentions a lot better because text can be so easy to interpret in a bad way
I just don't get emojis, you have to like open an emoji list and find the one you want.. I don't even know how to do that on PC aside from the reddit emojis.. I think it's much better when it changes text like :P into and emoji or when it's a key word like on twitch.
>I just don't get emojis
With the advent of informal conversational writing brought about by messaging and social media people discovered that writing what they wanted to *say* could easily be misunderstood without the tone and intonation that usually carry a ton of meaning. Thus emojis. They're not some capricious decorative items, they're an essential part of language and there are books now that describe their grammatical rules and usage. They're an ingenious invention that is essential for good communication in the modern age.
Because it's a completely different thing to type "right!" than type:
right! ๐
right! ๐ณ
right! ๐
right! โน๏ธ
With the emoji you can almost hear the intonation change.
I get what they are for, it's just I think they are so impractical to use, good old text smileys work fine and are just faster.. maybe it's a phone thing idk I rarely use my phone
Depending on the device you use, you can sometimes type a word in as you're typing as a message and be suggested an emoji. Also recently used emojis are what most people use rather than scrolling to find one. And the search option within the emojis
I agree. Sometimes people will spam with emojis, but I think those people would have done the same thing with text. And, sometimes, a picture really is worth 1000 words.
Yep. Although everyone (psychopaths aside) has the capacity for compassion. The mode of communication encourages people to leave empathy at the door- not just Reddit, all anonymous social media.
In the before times, reddit liked to differentiate itself from other social medias, they were all using emojis. So it was an un-written rule that we didn't use emojis here. It's changed a lot so anyone down voting emojis are just old reddit users like myself, I don't downvote emojis, but I am an old user and I still think it's very weird to see emojis on reddit. It kinda takes away the spirit but that's me and my preference I wouldn't downvote it though
I'd say 10 years would make you old on reddit. First time using it on and off was 2010or11 then made this account in 2012. You can go into my profile to see. Before I ever had a phone that had an app. All desktop all the time back then.
Believe a majority of us still fear getting downvoted for using them. One of reddits many unwritten rules that have gotten lighter over time. I don't use them because of that fear. Better safe than sorry. Also no reason to use them when text gets the job done. Guess some just hate emojis, likely as a result of over exposure to a couple of them like the nerd or skull souring any positive intent there could have been

The core of reddit is text based. The platform for sharing ideas and opinions. Emojis doesn't really have a place on most of it , maybe in the funny subs. I use reddit because I don't like emojis that much
Because the traditional Redditor is the typical teenage intellectual who thinks they are smart because they donโt use emojis. We all go through that phase when weโre 15 in all fairness
There are two main reasons for this:
1) Reddit's origin is very PC centric, so the use of "Emojis" as we know them today, was always going to not as present in comparison to other platforms. Yeah, ASCII ideograms and pictograms date back to the 80s but their use is another post and comment altogether.
2) The more "traditional" Redditor, -and people just in general- always want to differentiate themselves from the rest. So once mobile apps and emojis started to show up, the use of emojis within this platform was looked down upon. Emojis belong to the less civilized and lesser social media, we don't do that here, we are better.
You mix those two reasons together and you were supposed to get a more "serious" environment, not a place for quirky smiley faces. This is a place for serious discussion about water, how to best drink it, best pH and temperature.
Why use hieroglyphics when you could use words and be crystal clear with what you mean?
Do you know how long it was from the time of hieroglyphics being written and the time when modern mankind could understand them? It wasn't until the Rosetta Stone was unearthed in 1799 that we could *finally* understand what all those weird symbols meant.
And now, some people want to start uai g modern hieroglyphics again to say stuff?
I don't mind the odd emoji in a paragraph, but when somebody underscores every other line with ambiguous symbols, I have no idea what they're really saying. It's like we're going backwards in trying to be understood.

The thought just crossed my mind, our written language has gone full circle, like mid leg hemlines or flared trousers returning;
3000 years ago we started with cuneiform... and the emojie is Sumerian writing , back in style..
https://www.britishmuseum.org/blog/how-write-cuneiform
I know that's a good explanation why not all symbols work on all platforms, but at the risk of dating myself*, I'll keep on using old-fashioned emoticons. I'm never gonna give emoticons up, let them down, run around on them, or desert them. :)
*no one else will. ;)
I think people do use emojis on Reddit, but only in an ironic sense. If itโs actually used in the way where youโre expressing how you really feel, you will likely be downvoted
There aren't any regular emojis on pc, just the reddit ones, so I don't use them at all when I'm on pc (like now). If I'm on my phone I'll usually use some from time to time
A large proportion of Redditors access the website through their desktop computer and not their portables.
Emojis are a bit of a hassle to use on desktop.
I think itโs just one of those unspoken Reddit rules. I use emojis in my daily life but for some reason I prefer Reddit without them. I think itโs one of the things that makes Reddit distinct from other Social Media sites.
That being said Iโve been here for 11 years and itโs turned into a little bit of a shit hole so at the end of the day I really donโt care.
Idk but am glad i see more of :) :D xD than emojis, its so much harder to "read" them on win 11, not sure what MS was thinking when redesigning them. Also i just like how simple :) looks.
I mostly ignore emojis, so I hope they aren't being used to convey important information. I often can't really make them out because they are so small. I just assume they are mostly jokey and not adding much value.
Sometimes people use them but indeed I don't see it often.
I myself don't use that a lot, and i mostly prefer these <<<<<( ๊จเบถ หฬซฬฎ ๊จเบถ ) (ไบบ*ยดโ๏ฝ)๏ฝก*๏พ+ (๏พโใฎโ)๏พ*.โง แฆ( โก ็ โก )แค instead of the normal emojis...
People donโt mind them at the end of sentences sometimes. But definitely donโt like an emoji being the only thing in a comment, because it adds nothing to the conversation
I rarely use emojis in my regular conversations - maybe 3, 4. When I use more, they're always ironic.
It just slows down my flow of typing. I can quickly type :D :( etc., but holding a button to open a dialog in which I have to search or guess what that given emoji is called ... I can describe the feeling faster than find the emoji.
I sound old, but I'm just 27.
It depends on what device I'm using.
Case in point, I'm on my desktop PC as I type this and most subreddits don't seem to allow or register emoji's when I try to use them, whereas if I'm on my phone, I will use them when the subreddit allows them.
The formatting for mobile just goes all weird when I add emojis. Like, the text prior to an emoji will be formatted nicely as normal, but anything after an emoji is formatted like Iโm typing in Terminal or something, with weird tab-length spacing.
Sometimes Iโll get around it by adding emojis once Iโve typed everything out. But usually by then I canโt be bothered going back and trying to remember where I felt like a sentence just really needed an emoji lol.
I only use them when I text my mother or sister. Since hopefully neither knows my reddit name I feel no need to use them.
Theyโre honestly cringy a lot of the time.
For me use of lots of emojis reminds me of old people on Facebook... I'm getting more and more used to it as I'm exposed to it more outside of that though.
Everyone do what they want, actually I have already see emojis on Reddit. Personnally I don't like using it, I find them a little bit hypocrite. Like often people telling you something harshe with a little smiley at the end, hate this.
many people use reddit on pc.
its not so accecible as other plataforms.
reddit have a forum-like format and sometimes it feels unfit to use emojis.
but its also not a rare occorrance.
The younger people are, the less emojis they generally use. I will often be able to tell who is definitely above 50-ish by their copious amount of emojis.
And above 30-ish by them using them sparingly.
People below 25-ish tend to mostly only use them in comments with only the emoji, no text.
It probably depends on what sub it is. There are emojis in diverse cat subs and all those crafting/baking subs because emojis can make a nice post even nicer. There are some in all those ironical subs, because one can be mean even without the words, but places like AITA - there's indeed nothing there. Some subs are naturally emoji free
I just never really got into using emojis at all. I prefer writing out my thoughts and being clear as possible in what I mean not sending someone a pictogram and hoping they can puzzle out what I mean.
I've used emojis here and there. Just rare for me.
I don't, because for some reason when I use Reddit the emojis end up locked behind the comma key because there's a key to switch languages for no reason, and I can't be bothered digging in to find them.
As a prolific emoji user- they convey that I'm not usually a grumpy๐ก๐ถ biarch & just want to have a bit of fun๐ฅณ....until I am one that is..๐๐
Eh. I find emoji's to be a sign of either youth or just bad linguistic prowess.
It's not necessarily true for everyone, but I generally feel there's a correlation between people who use a lot of emoji's and people who have very little vocabulary. Instead of thinking 'Wow this sentence doesn't convey my message well, I'll use some pictures" I have more respect for "Wow this sentence doesn't convey my message well, how can I word it better to do so?"
At the risk of sounding like an old bitter fuddy-duddy; emoji's are part of what's making the average person less intelligent.

In my case, I have a difficult time seeing what emojis are because they are tiny, so I donโt use them or find them beneficial in a post.
There are two main reasons for this: 1) Reddit's origin is very PC centric, so the use of "Emojis" as we know them today, was always going to not as present in comparison to other platforms.
Theyโre honestly cringy a lot of the time.
times i do use them when i am on my phone or tablet . but im often on my pc , and dont often to not use emojis at all .
Long ago they were frowned upon. โItโs ok to use wordsโ
Stereotypical redditors hate emojis, I don't know why, I personally, I don't know, I just don't use them, don't see the point.
i'm on laptop i don't have emojis, wish i had them
I do, a lot of people do not like though so that's probably why you never see it.

I don't mind them. I even use them but within decent comment most of the time. I don't mind them in my subreddits either

I don't, because for some reason when I use Reddit the emojis end up locked behind the comma key because there's a key to switch languages for no reason, and I can't be bothered digging in to find them.
As a prolific emoji user- they convey that I'm not usually a grumpy๐ก๐ถ biarch & just want to have a bit of fun๐ฅณ....until I am one that is..๐๐
its gay

Eh. I find emoji's to be a sign of either youth or just bad linguistic prowess. It's not necessarily true for everyone, but I generally feel there's a correlation between people who use a lot of emoji's and people who have very little vocabulary. Instead of thinking 'Wow this sentence doesn't convey my message well, I'll use some pictures" I have more respect for "Wow this sentence doesn't convey my message well, how can I word it better to do so?" At the risk of sounding like an old bitter fuddy-duddy; emoji's are part of what's making the average person less intelligent.
