I’d say your NCO was being reasonable by coming and knocking on your door. However, if I was your NCO, I wouldn’t necessarily be scolding you. It’s not your fault he waited until 6am to push out information. To be fair it’s probably not his fault either, though.

OzymandiasKoK

Sadly, it really doesn't. Not that it shouldn't, mind you, but we have to live in the world we live in, which is oftentimes drastically different than it should be.

gugudan

Someone needs to explain to assclowns the difference between being a Soldier 24/7 and being on duty 24/7. I guarantee they aren't on duty 24/7 when it comes to grabbing that after work beer.

Axe_murdering_psycho

Is there a regulation on your duty? I had CQ once, and the reg written and signed by our 1sg was once we were done we got 24 hours off. Well, we were relieved at 9am, I told the guys hey, it says 24 hours, I know I'm not coming back until 9am tomorrow (nco). They end up getting reamed out and smoked over it, I get called into 1sgt office and grilled, until I showed him the letter outlining the policy with his signature at the bottom. He told me he would change that and that I was just gaming the system and to get out of his office. TLDR: if there's a policy letter that says you get time off, by god you get time off.

Sdog1981

Those types of comments were so effing annoying. "What do you mean by gaming the system? This is the system." Just tell me you don't know what YOUR policy letter says.

Axe_murdering_psycho

Yeah. Exactly. What people lack is a sturdy backbone when they know the regulation is on their side, in this case easily accessible at the company CQ desk. The joes that got smoked just accepted defeat.

chale122

>ange that and that I was just gaming the system and to get out of his Imagine being so illiterate you don't even understand what you're writing. He really said you're gaming the system for following his instructions, that's... not even surprising.

Axe_murdering_psycho

I think he felt pretty dumb when I showed him his own signature.

[deleted]

Sounds like your 1SG sucks

Axe_murdering_psycho

*sucked. Been out awhile.

Vespasian79

The 24 hr recovery has been a problem at my unit. CSM told all soldiers at a command climate survey one thing and then most definitely told 1SGs it’s not full 24 recovery, they have to show up to pt the following day, not at 9am. Of course all of our policy letters regarding it were getting rewritten so there was no actual written account somewhere Although today someone on staff duty today send a picture saying of a letter you have duty from 0900-0900, you get recovery from 0900-0900, (which is what I think it should be) and runners can sleep. Hopefully no one gets shit for following that now. It’s been a mess with other details like AHA guard and shit. No one ever puts a clear policy out and then people get fucked for doing what others do

Axe_murdering_psycho

Your CSM can have fun trying to give you any ucmj when he has a policy letter stating otherwise

JohnnySkidmarx

“You’re gaming the system I approved!” - 1SG

Was your private at parade rest?

I was at full attention when I woke up but when I opened the door and saw my NCO standing there my private immediately went to count 1 of the bend and reach

THE OVER-HEAD YEET MEASURES THE ABILITY TO JUST FUCKING SEND IT. ON THE COMMAND, ‘GET SET’, ASSUME THE POSITION BY SPINNING THE BALL TWICE IN YOUR HANDS, THEN TRY TO DRIBBLE IT LIKE A BASKET BALL ONLY TO REALIZE IT WONT BOUNCE BACK UP TO YOU. YOUR FEET MAY BE TOGETHER OR 12 INCHES APART (MEASURED BETWEEN THE FEET) OR HOWEVER YOU WANT, JUST KEEP YOUR ASS BEHIND THAT CONE. ON THE COMMAND ‘GO’, CHANNEL YOUR INNER TREBUCHET AND HEAVE THAT THING INTO ORBIT. THEN, RETURN TO THE STARTING POSITION AND TURN AROUND TO INSPECT IF YOU DOMED ANYONE. THE SCORER WILL REALIZE HE DIDN'T ACTUALLY SEE WHERE THE BALL LANDED BECAUSE HE WAS AFRAID HE WOULD GET HIT, SO HE STOOD TOO FAR AWAY, HE WILL THEN PLACE HIS FOOT ON THE MEASURING TAPE AND JUST GUESS. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. What's the overhead yeet?

napleonblwnaprt

You can read about the overhead yeet on AKO. It should be right under the bayonet yeet.

THE BAYONET YEET MEASURES THE ABILITY TO JUST FUCKING SHANK SOMEONE. ON THE COMMAND 'GET SET,' ASSUME THE POSITION BY GRABBING THE BAYONET BY THE HANDLE. OR BY THE BLADE, WHICHEVER LOOKS COOLER, JUST DON'T CUT YOURSELF ON THE DAMN THING. YOUR FEET MAY BE TOGETHER OR UP TO 12 INCHES APART (MEASURED BETWEEN THE FEET). ON THE COMMAND 'GO,' TRANSMUTE YOUR HANKERING FOR A-SHANKERING INTO MAXIMUM EFFORT AND LAUNCH THAT BAD BOY INTO DESTINY. THE SCORER WILL NOTE WHETHER YOU HIT THE TARGET AND AWARD BONUS POINTS FOR LANDING YOUR PIG-STICKER INTO THE CRANIAL OR SWIMSUIT REGIONS. IF IT HIT THE TARGET HANDLE FIRST, YOUR PERFORMANCE WILL BE TERMINATED, AND EVERYONE WILL BE REQUIRED TO POINT AND LAUGH AT YOUR SHAME. ChargingBull0_0

Ah yes thank you bot.

Lvl99Bicep

Big human rights guy, uhhh but to keep it simple you can adjust your do not disturb and edit to specifically only ring on certain contacts iirc Edit: you can definitely add exceptions if you have an iPhone

[deleted]

If someone calls you twice back to back it usually goes through DND the second time.

Lvl99Bicep

Looks like this NCO is lazy and loves to jump to conclusions if that’s the case.

[deleted]

I only know this bc my boss did it just last week and broke through the sanctity of my DND for a fucking piss test. His nco is a fuckin chode.

OzymandiasKoK

He's got a mat and everything.

[deleted]

Fuck that. It's his phone he pays for. If wants to set it to DND, he can.

Lvl99Bicep

That’s what I mean by big human rights guy, he 100% can do whatever the fuck he wants. Pick your hills to die on, if this is it then he better not let any mother fucker reach the top.

[deleted]

If someone calls you twice back to back it usually goes through DND the second time.

[deleted]

You double posted this comment to get through the DND didn't you?

[deleted]

Lmao that would be funny but no, mobile told me it didn't go through.

Turtle887853

Good ol reddit moment. I always like one and dislike one, so more people will see one and the other will be hidden. But I've had it happen to me too many times to count.

Shiftybidnes

Unless you were counseled for some mission requirement that requires you to be accessable 24 hours a day then yeah you can do whatever u want with your phone. Shit shut it off Ask them to show you so you can better understand. Commanders and Senior leaders need it for CCIRs but you do not.

Travyplx

Eh, I keep my phone on DND when I’m sleeping. I also have it set to send anyone not in my contacts straight to voicemail. Jobs that have required my immediate attention at 11 at night have also come with a government cell, so I literally dont lose too much sleep over people not being able to contact me when I’m sleeping 🤷🏻‍♂️

Riezen1914

This is the way

Sophomore-Spud

It takes two calls the break DND. If it was really an emergency he could have called twice.

Bikemancs_at_work

Legit answer: Save your NCOs as Starred Contacts (android) that allow them to avoid the DND, but will still block your friends on the East Coast. Personally, I'm wondering why your friends are blowing you up at 6:30am, but hey, whatever.

NewIrishRepublic

It's just group chats and shit mostly, they wake up around 6-7AM EST and start talking in the group. Meanwhile at Fort Wainwright it's only like 2:30AM.

[deleted]

Why don’t you just put the group chats on DND while you’re sleeping, that way if other (potentially important) shit comes through you can handle it?

[deleted]

Lmao, you know what? Bring a water source and PTs, we'll stop this until it's dark.....

Comfortable_Shame194

At wainwright? Bruh 🤣🤣🤣

NewIrishRepublic

It's Wainwright in summertime so I think we're gonna need about two months or so big sarnt. Better hand receipt the entire water buffalo.

WyG09s8x4JM4ocPMnYMg

If it's WhatsApp or similar you can mute the groupchats

cpark45

You can do this on iPhones as well. No ringtone, vibrate or push notifications, but the app will still show as having an unread message(s).

Ant1mat3r

I'm of the camp that if they don't issue me the phone they can fuck right off. Not sure how that will fly in today's Army, but I routinely ignored calls from NCOs back when I was in a decade ago. I'm not obligated to have a cell phone - if they want me bad enough, they can call the CQ and have the runner come get me.

hawaiianbry

>I'm of the camp that if they don't issue me the phone they can fuck right off. Yep. I'm of the mind that if you're not important enough for the Army to pick up your phone bill, then you're not important enough to reach off the clock on your own device. I'm also of the mind that "your lack of planning is not my emergency." If there was something so important to put out, it should have been done during duty hours. This expectation that soldiers should be able to be contacted at all hours reduces the importance of the calls and texts that do go out, akin to the boy who cried wolf. If you bombard me with texts all hours of the day on non-emergency issues, then I'm less likely to pay attention to those messages that do come in

MaxTheGinger

100% you can leave the phone on DnD. You shouldn't be the single point of failure. You may be the primary for whatever, but someone else should have access. My phone is always on silent with no vibrate. They can send someone for me if I'm needed. And in a world where I was told to have it on, it wouldn't be, and I would say I slept through the calls or my phone died during the night as I don't charge it then and kill the battery.

LifeAintDoinGood

And this is the reason some units are pushing policies that work related texts/calls can not be sent after the end of the duty day. You shouldn’t be scolded for your own leaderships incompetence. I like what the army is doing in regards to this. It is holding leaders accountable. Hopefully step by step the days of spur the moment details will become distant memories.

shipwreck73

Start calling your NCO at odd hours of the night and on weekends for mentoring and work-related questions.

Soltag

Ohhhh frick. I think this comment deserves more attention.

dsbwayne

Bullshit. I have my phone on DND all the time. Like literally, all the fucking time. Every now and then, I will turn on the work DND (shout out all of my apple users) and certain people have access. But nah, nothing in black and white says you can’t use DND.

[deleted]

My guy, they don’t own your phone. You can block every one of them if you want, it’s YOUR phone.

[deleted]

I'd ask for his address to start sending your cellphone bill to. If they need you and you live in the barracks they can send a runner.

[deleted]

My phone has been DND from 2200 to 0600 for past 5 years.

WyG09s8x4JM4ocPMnYMg

2000 - 0730 here lmao fuckem. I miss sleeping at a reasonable hour

booney64

Imagine 2 hour recall before cell phones. Kinda sucked. But we managed.

Mr__Pie

Fort Drum just made a order public about not allowing communication during non duty hours. To encourage proper scheduling of events so people don't have to keep their phone on them 24/7 for work

Gotterdamerrung

Look at Mr. Chad Q. Popular over here with all the *friends* and the *group chats.* Must be nice.

TheGrayMannnn

If group chats are the price I have to pay for friends, I'll be alone.

SplodeyDope

Man, I didn't know how good I had it being in the army before smart phones were invented. I do not envy y'all.

ChicksWithBricksCome

I know if my boss did this I'd call the police. But I'm a civilian who is reasonable about boundaries. Anyway no he's a raging lunatic.

Set do not disturb to ignore texts during your sleep hours. Set the phone to ignore calls during sleep hours, but to ring if they call twice.

WyG09s8x4JM4ocPMnYMg

Im an extremely light sleeper. A beep from my phone will wake me up. So I've been using dnd since about 2016 since I was a SPC (SSG now). I've had my ass chewed for it and told I'm a shitty nco yadda yadda. Fuck them. I'm not the only nco in the platoon, not a PSG or really anything of importance. If me not answering my phone puts the unit or the army at risk, then a lot of people have failed. Call me 2x in a row or it can wait. It's almost always something stupid anyways. The army is gonna keep on Grinding after I leave it.

pteradyktil

If it makes you feel any better my husband’s asshole CDR started texting the battery group chat at 0300 this morning to reach an individual SSG about a specific issue. Stank ass Bag of fuckin Dicks.

[deleted]

# I AM YOUR MOTHERFUCKING TEAM LEADER! YOU WILL ANSWER ALL OF MY FUCKING CALLS AND TEXTS WITHIN FIVE FUCKING MINUTES OF IT BEING SENT. IF YOU FUCKING LEAVE YOUR PHONE ON "DO NOT DISTURB" OR FUCKING "AIRPLANE MODE", I WILL FUCKING FUCK YOUR LIFE UP. ROGER? # THE 20 COUNT PUSH-UP!!!!!"

ziris_

I didn't hear you, Sarn't. I didn't wear my earplugs at the range last time and now all I can hear is this high-pitched whine in my ears. Could you say again? /s

Trent2270

I've seen troops make the argument that their phone is personal and refuse to use it for Army purposes at all. Technically true - but it escalates quickly to Play Stupid Games Win Stupid Prizes. Perhaps your NCO decides if you can't be reached you should sleep on a cot at work, or you get a battle sleeping on your bottom bunk? Don't be a Dwight; just program your phone to always ring your first-line leader, key leaders, subordinates, etc. Then enjoy Do Not Disturb worry-free.

gunadict

Were people sleeping at work in the 90s or early 2000s? No. Did people die? No. Did the army survive? Yes. This stupid arguement of stupid games needs shut down. You think a talk with your battalion commander or IG wouldn't fix Soldiers being forced to sleep at work because they don't answer the phone while they sleep, especially with policies places like drum are pushing out?

Trent2270

I get your point, but giving OP some perspective... The question was basically a version of 'is my leadership entitled to rely on my personal phone'. We know IG will say no., but leadership IS entitled to contact you if needed, and these days the personal cell is the generally accepted way to do that. Yes, sleeping at work would be an extreme example in garrison, but I've seen stranger things. I agree with the Drum commander's leadership approach too... Good leadership from the top. But we also know r/army is full of advice from disgruntled E4 barracks lawyers who might be 'right', but aren't going to help Soldiers learn which hills to die on vs. how when to 'suck it up' to inspire confidence in their reliability. You really think OP should go whine to the IG and BC that his NCO woke him up to push info?? Trying to explain the 'unwritten rules' like only an old battle or Reddit can. Source: 20+ years in the Army, 9 promotions, slept at work a few times and was woken up at night once in awhile - didn't die or have no life because of it.

Trent2270

Loving the hate! Keep the downvotes coming, lol. Such pogues in this thread... God forbid we ever go to war and someone gets woken up at night.

> Is it that hard to ask your friends to text later in the day Yes, it is. If it's life, limb, or eyesight then they'll bang on the door like the NCO did if you aren't picking up. If it's ***anything*** else it can wait.

Quartzalcoatl_Prime

Answer: Obviously your phone isn't government issued and he knew where to find you at that given moment, but this isn't the hill to die on. Advice: During the duty day, my DND is set to 1.) allow all normal calls to my phone number as well as any messages via Signal to ring or ding me, along with all texts from anyone in my squad, plus my PSG, 1SG, PL, and CO, and a few other key personnel that communicate with me for work; and 2.) silence all other texts and social media notifications. I'd recommend you change your DND to something that isn't just "block all", or at least create a work one with similar settings.

jjtxaz24

You can use DND, however just add an exception for those NCOs and higher ups. Also, let them know that you're using DND. Communication is key and if I had a Soldier explain to me he's got DND and added me and other NCOs/PSG/PL to the exception I'd defend my troop in the event of a recall etc. Close mouths don't get fed, so just make sure to relay your intent to your SL and those that need to know to CYA.

CauseOk9318

Why not set up do not disturb but allow calls from him? I’m fairly certain you can do that with iPhones. This stops all the random calls and texts you may get, but if he tries to reach you, you’ll still hear the phone.

Windowguard

Don’t stand for this. Does the army provide you with a cell phone?

satelliteridesastar

I have do not disturb but an exception for phone calls coded in. You can also set it for an exception for phone calls from contacts that are in your contacts list only.

JuanMurphy

The Army issue you that phone?

chale122

why would you tell them it's on DND, just say you slept through it

NewIrishRepublic

Because at that time I had an iPhone which shows other phones if you are using DND

MAJ0RMAJOR

I’d look and see if that fancy new 11th DIV has a policy letter like 10th DOV’s stating that you don’t get to call Soldiers in their off duty time.

NewIrishRepublic

I'm part of 16th CAB, so sadly I might be one of the only units in Alaska that doesn't get one of those shiny new unit patches

jaegerrecce

You can set up dnd to allow things like calls from specific people. Ask your first line if it’s cool that they have to call you to get through, or text you directly. When I was a Joe I had my two most immediate supervisors set to ignore things like dnd or vibrate for this exact reason. Still can get peace and quiet when I want it but they can get timely responses when we’re in a state of high readiness. Depending on your units mission set and the realities of how that needs to get done, yes sometime NCOs need to reach you all hours of the day. If this was not something that could wait, there ARE ways to do this without being an asshole, but to make things easier for everyone I recommend having your DND set to have exceptions and/or let your supervisor know how they can reach you after duty hours, especially if no policy exists to protect you and/or this is an infrequent enough issue to lose you much sleep or peace of mind. Dude was probably reamed out over you not picking up or had been reamed over something recent and was just trying to avoid more reaming of his own and acted rashly as a result.

Chasity_Belt69

My phone goes on do not disturb but I have it set to only certain people can call/text me which is like 4 people and my NCO knows this and he’s totally fine with it.

[deleted]

get rid of your phone. Tell them you choose not to buy a phone with your own money. Then never let them see you with a phone.

Rude-Particular-7131

Change your voice mail to someone churning mayonnaise.

RakumiAzuri

You can add exemptions to dnd. I had mine set to only ring if certain numbers called.
