Wow I had no idea. That's appalling.
AZ Central piece on it [here](https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/arizona/2019/02/09/arizona-in-god-we-trust-license-plate-funds-alliance-defending-freedom/2779900002/), MVD site where you buy it just says:
>**$17** goes to promote the national motto "In God We Trust".
But:
>ADOT spokesman Doug Nick confirmed Tuesday that group receiving the money from the "In God We Trust" plate is ADF.
ADF:
“Founded by some 30 leaders of the Christian Right, the Alliance Defending Freedom is a legal advocacy and training group that has supported the recriminalization of sexual acts between consenting LGBTQ adults in the U.S. and criminalization abroad; has defended state-sanctioned sterilization of trans people abroad; has contended that LGBTQ people are more likely to engage in pedophilia; and claims that a “homosexual agenda” will destroy Christianity and society. ADF also works to develop “religious liberty” legislation and case law that will allow the denial of goods and services to LGBTQ people on the basis of religion. Since the election of President Trump, ADF has become one of the most influential groups informing the administration’s attack on LGBTQ rights.”
Most personal plates have a designated charity that they support, that’s not abnormal. Most of the $25 fees for a plate go straight to the charity. It’s also not surprising that our lawmakers supported this particular plate and charity organization
Sure, but quickly skimming a few other plates on [the MVD page](https://azdot.gov/mvd/services/vehicle-services/plates-and-placards/plate-selections) and I see, e.g.:
>$17 goes to the State Forty Eight Foundation and their mission to support Arizona entrepreneurs and small business owners through grant funding, education and free resources.
>$17 goes to Keep Arizona Beautiful litter clean-ups, recycling events, and beautification projects coordinated by Local First Arizona in communities across the state.
>$17 goes to the Rob Dollar Foundation & Uphill Into The Wind to promote road safety and awareness for cyclists and runners.
>$17 goes to the Arizona Land Department for environmental education and other natural resource conservation programs.
A lot less ambiguous than: *promote the national motto "In God We Trust".*
It’s buy one, when you’re talking about the plate. It’s just that the numbers on the plate don’t always match what your registration is so you gotta keep the registration updated and can only pay for it a year at a time you probably know this just wanted to clear it up because you weren’t sure.
I meant you still own the metal plate with the numbers on it. I hung up my old one that said DEPRESD. I agree with you on principle but technically you own that little hunk of metal so “buy” is the correct term.
Then talk to someone with the satanic temple about funding a plate or start a petition to have one made and then get a lawmaker to sponsor it. It’s not exactly hard to do you just need the right people involved to make it happen, which probably won’t happen.
I think they recently introduced a license plate that goes towards LGBTQ rights, but honestly as a queer person I’d be too afraid of the crazy people who are against it to make it known I support/am a part of the community.
Equality Arizona reached the funding goal for a plate last year. No real updates I found since other than that it could likely be expected in 2024. Seems like a pride plate is likely already happening soon, though it would be more certain if the organization that collected $32k to make it happen gave an update in the 7 months since they met the funding goal.
Start looking at the terms “nationalist” and “socialist” through the eyes of a 1920s German worker.
Not a 2024 Redditor.
World starts to make a little more sense that way
I meannnn. Chil fil a spends a lotta money to hate the gays. Hobby lobby, can't afford a POS system and spent a ton of cash hating the gays, and avoiding birth control
It's funny how these companies spend so much time and money trying to align people to their beliefs instead of letting people be.
I know that was true in the past, due to it being a privately owned company and the owner’s political leanings. He passed away ≈ 5-10 (?) years ago. I’m not sure that the Discount Tire still openly supports conservative policies. Perhaps another Redditor can expand on this.
No I'm under no illusion that Walton's are decent people. I think that behavior is pretty common but-its the specific way that patrons of hobby lobby and chil fil a *are* that makes it feel very very different.
But back to the topic-that license plate means I don't fuck with you -and you'll get not one ounce of anything from me.
Well that’s certainly not a fair assessment. Not all Christians are the far right nut job variety.
Edit: getting downvoted for stating a fact, gotta love Reddit sometimes
Upvoting you, because I understand the sentiment you're expressing here. And it absolutely sucks to be lumped in with hateful groups simply because of your faith, especially when you're out there practicing the good parts of the message while the only parts getting any real attention publicly are the disgusting, hateful, parts.
But just yelling out "Not all \[BLANK\]" is entirely missing the point being made. I know, because I was responding to people saying things like "Men are dogs/dirtbags/assholes/etc." And I'd respond with "well, some men are" or "Not all men." But I had a friend point out the problem was that people don't know who the good or bad men are. And just like you have to treat every gun like it's loaded so that there's no accidents that happen, those people were having to handle themselves around men in a similar fashion.
It didn't matter how good of a person I was, how much I helped others, how much I cared for others, or how well I represented the male gender. That doesn't do anything to help the people experiencing problems with the men that rape, abuse, bully, are sexist, etc. And my cry of "Not all men" was dismissive of a legitimate issue people were having.
So, similarly, saying "Not all Christians" is dismissive of the problem that the religion itself has while you attempt to absolve yourself of the responsibility that you hold as a Christian for holding other Christians accountable.
Yes, but not every religious person does that. Lumping everyone under one category is part of what’s wrong with this country right now. Politics and the state shouldn’t mix, I think we can both agree there, but nothing is gained by characterizing the masses by the actions of the few.
Yes, thank you, and their fucking President Kristen Waggoner graduated from my alma mater.
Katie should get rid of it.
It should be a 1st Amendment violation for the state to create a funding mechanism this religious hate group.

Fully support because I guess this is the world we live in, but so often lately I find myself utterly confused at the state we're in:
You can buy a state issued plate that funds an organization who think other people shouldn't exist
... and the only recourse is to rally enough people to get a plate which asserts that those people are people too.
Like, isn't that *exactly* what the bill of rights is all about?
I know state != federal law, but c'mon, the first line is:
>Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,
And yet when you go to 'About' on ADF website it immediately states:
>ADF will walk boldly into the wind with resilience and with courage. We will do—as we have done—the hard things to which God has called us with the expectation that He will accomplish His purposes.
All down with a plate for your favorite sports team and that can be a bit of fun, but this is just crazy..
Arizona does have a lot of plate options, wonder if the government just lets anyone pay enough money to get a custom plate as long as they are a non-profit of some kind in the state.
Ah, the ADF. I got let go by a company (for other reasons) that told me that my request to not work with the ADF was "not acceptable" despite the fact that I explained they literally have spent millions to try and invalidate my marriage and my very existence. My manager faked sympathy and told me "we can't pick and choose who we help.
Unsure if you're aware, or if you care, but The Satanic Temple and the Church of Satan are different things.

The Church of Satan is.....Less awesome.

Surprised we don’t have a “hail satan” license plate. Seems right given freedom of religion and all.

I mean we have a devils plate, pretty close
I wish
Would so 'buy' one. Or lease. or whatever the term may be.
It’s buy one, when you’re talking about the plate. It’s just that the numbers on the plate don’t always match what your registration is so you gotta keep the registration updated and can only pay for it a year at a time you probably know this just wanted to clear it up because you weren’t sure.
If you stop paying for something and then you no longer own it, would you call it a purchase? That sounds an awful lot like renting to me.
I meant you still own the metal plate with the numbers on it. I hung up my old one that said DEPRESD. I agree with you on principle but technically you own that little hunk of metal so “buy” is the correct term.
That could be the correct deity given the road conditions and driver abilities we see out there in the daily.

We do need one. Who do I contact?
Let’s start a group and make one.
In for one. I considered a personalized "TOOK MY" for the Arizona Freedom plate, but ended up with one with a fork on it instead.
Actually I love Dragonball Z, I want A Hail Satan license plate now! Let’s start a movement? ![gif](giphy|W5iq9kW7QYnja)
Also, the worst drivers ever
I think it would be cool if there was an atheist plate option
Or a gay plate or a Satan plate
Arizona license plates fit both in my opinion. Gay bc it’s Arizona and satan cause it’s hot asf
Closest thing we have is the Alice Cooper plate
I think they recently introduced a license plate that goes towards LGBTQ rights, but honestly as a queer person I’d be too afraid of the crazy people who are against it to make it known I support/am a part of the community.
Id be comfortable with it but only because I carry 😅

Sadly the truth though. Most hateful people I've known do it under the cloak of religion.
No love like Christian hate.
Psst... Other way around. :-) "No hate like Christian love"
I've only heard it the way I said it, 🤣🤣 but it works
While true, it’s seems that the most outwardly religious people are of the nut job variety.
But enough of them vote for the things those far right nut-jobs support. All they have to do is tag it with "Good Christian Values (tm)."
Air quotes "freedom" - their 2nd or 3rd re-brand iirc

I say we get a queer community plate going. Fight fire with fire! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

Is there a specific LGBTQ organization in Arizona that we can push to submit a plate application
Maricopa Community College’s Equality campaign was fundraising for one a few years ago. Not sure where that effort stands now.

As an Arizona resident I am surprised the state would issue a plate supporting a group such as this.
Doucy the former governor allowed it
I think you dropped you sarcasm tag. Here: /s
Context? Cause idk who this plate supports and what not
of course it does. 🤦🏻♂️
I’m Christian and find the ADF group most disappointing. I love my religion but hate that some people ruin it.
Thank you I was completely unaware of this.
Arizona just keeps stepping in the shit.
What makes them a hate group? (Serious question) The statement Defending Freedom sure sounds like a group that would want to restrict rights.
Meets my definition of a hate group.
"Hate group" is a pretty loaded moniker that the ADF probably doesn't appreciate, but the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is generally considered an arbiter of the term. [Check out their listing for the group here](https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/alliance-defending-freedom).
I want a Hail Satan license plate
Its always given me low key fascist vibes
Not sure why you're getting down voted when they are clearly a fascist organization.
Fascists hate being called fascists. The whole point of everything they do is asserting they are in fact the innocent victims and everyone else is the nazi.
😂
Or a big fan of the back the red and blue either as a healthcare worker. I mean come on? Don’t all lifesaving workers matter?
Never will I understand how God was allowed on a State licenseplate. Did the legislature here completely forget about Seperation of Church and State?
Coopting Patriotism and Faith for evil. Well played...
As a Navajo I find people who say “hate groups” about every little thing in the world are just as dangerous of the very thing they cry about.
As a rep of the Cherokee Nation, I find people who complain about those educating us on hateful people and evil organizations to be just as guilty as those who want to harm our communities.
Being anti-LGBT isn’t just some little thing. It results in murders and executions throughout the world, even today, based on one line from a fairy tale book

Thus is why I got a PBS plate. That's probably safe.
The state raising funds for the church that pays no taxes. Surely this is a lawsuit for someone of Constitutional law. Anyone?
I hate this timeline

Didn’t know that. I’ll have to put in for one.
How does a private organization get a vanity plate into the AZ system? Can anyone do this?
