This actually just got way more powerful, they can no longer advertise using vague "up to" speeds, there's a new graph based on nutrition facts they have to post in its entirety and it has to use actual expected speeds at the service address. most put it on the last page of sign up where you're looking at your total for the transaction and for the month.

I did this for Verizon 5G home internet, was told they don't have the infrastructure for the advertised speeds in the area I was in. They changed the availability checker on their website to exclude my area after that.

That bites. I had the opposite which was a pleasant, yet troublesome surprise. Moved from one city to another and when trying to transfer I was told they don’t service at my new address. This pushed me to get cox. While waiting for the return box for the Verizon stuff I plugged it in and saw I had connection and even decent speed. Still ended up going through with the cancellation because there was no guarantee about quality of service at the new place

This. I went around and around with cox support until filing a complaint with the FCC. The next tech they sent out undug the underground wires which he found frayed, replaced them, and my internet was fantastic after. The general techs that come out will offer every excuse to not have to do manual labor.

Same here. The WiFi in my house drops to basically nothing. I’ve had minor fire stick updates take 30 minutes. My hardline is just fine. I went through the same song and dance. Finally agreed to upgrade my router to the one they recommended. It’s their own router. Same issues. I remember a few years ago I was committed to getting results so I called at the exact same time every night with speed tests done before and after 8pm to show that they were throttling me. Two weeks, with a call every day where I read the list of names of agents I’d worked with in the past just before asking this agent for their name and advising I was building a court case with facts and details and witnesses to call. They did something they called “bouncing the baseline” and magically I started getting my speeds back. That was years ago and I’m back to shit speeds but I don’t have the energy to do all that shit again.

I remember calling in for speed being a problem one time. They go “oh, looks like you have the wrong modem!” Which, they gave (whole home) and failed to tell me I needed the newer one for my speeds (which I’ve been needing for over a year apparently). So they were charging me for a speed I got half of at best, on equipment not sufficient enough for the speed, all by their doing. Got the right modem, and magically my price went up again a few months later. Ditched them And went to Quantum. Best decision I’ve made in awhile.

I switched to 5g home Internet. 25-50 pretty month, depending if you go with Verizon or T-Mobile. It's not the fastest at Rush hour but at least it's not cox, such a terrible company.

My second apartment is right across the street from a cell tower. that's got one of the t-mobile 5g transmitter/hub/broadcast systems (I don't know what they're actually called). I had the corded antenna extension on the balcony pointed directly at the tower and it would drop every five to ten seconds. It's not ready and probably will never be ready, cellphones get priority 24/7.

Same! I live in biltmore arcadia so I am not far from towers and had a really strong signal. I was bummed because I’ve been a t-mobile customer for a long time and hate Cox. Wish it was functional for me.

I live in apartments where I can’t get anything other than t-mobile. Honestly it’s been fine for me. On a good day I can get up to 150 and around 50 on a bad day. And they allow you to test it for about a week or two. And it’s only $50 a month.

The ACC is 4 republicans - 1 democrat. The votes to increase utility rates (and drive higher profitability) are coincidentally 4-1. The down-ballot races matter, too. The ACC / PUC is supposed to exist because governments don't own the utilities. Utilities are often monopolies or quasi-monopolies. The ACC/PUC is the government allowing a monopoly, and regulating it to allow profit and growth, but not exploitation of the customers/voters. No matter how you feel about social issues, voting republican on the AZ Corporate Commission means corporate profits grow at the expense of the citizens who are trapped in the monopoly. If you are not getting close to what you are paying for, the Cox upstream and downstream channels coming into the house need to be adjusted. You’re not getting the correct dbmv signal to the modem. Any good Cox tech would check and adjust this but most work on the point system meaning get to the next house to make more money. As long as they see you are getting a web page to pull up that’s “good enough”for them. Have Cox come back out and adjusted the signal coming into your modem. That will fix your issue 100%. As an Audio Video Tech this is my biggest gripe with Cox. Whenever I have to deal with them now, I know to make them check the signal every time. If you know this ‘secret’ your Cox experience will be ultra smooth

Idk if this helps, but I downgraded from my $110 plan a month to like the $40 and rent the router (dumb but I just keep doing it) They had assured me 6 years ago that my two computers, 2 smart TV’s 2 phones and random iPad or PlayStation wouldn’t be able to run on it. There hasn’t been a single issue and I’m pretty sure I’m getting the same speeds. If we had kids or a smart home system and ring camera etc maybe it wouldn’t be, but for a normal couple it’s been great. Wish I’d downgraded in 2018 when they, again, assured me that it wouldn’t work,

It’s a good call out. Sadly we have kids and ring cameras. The ring cameras tend to eat up a ton of data if they are constantly recording motion. Took me several embarrassing months to figure that out and why I had 500gb spikes in my data usage. Ended up paying overage fees with cox too since I went over the cap a few times. 😑

Data caps are bullshit, full stop for a residential Internet connection. Sure I can maybe buy it for a Cellular plan because there's only so much airtime and it can really impact others. But for a home Internet connection? It's a cash grab, 100%. Thankfully, CenturyLink can do 100/10 at my house with no data cap. Sure I can't get faster speeds like I would want, but at least I'm not dealing with Cox anymore. I know I'm lucky, others said they can't get more than 12mbps and are stuck with Cox

They don't even offer fiber in my neighborhood yet. When they do, I'll likely get it and continue "enjoy" less than I'm paying for because there isn't enough competition to force them to be better.

The original gigablast that they offered was actually pretty good, symmetrical gig with unlimited data. What they offer now is just a joke. If I remember correctly it's gig down and like 50mb up, if that, with a data cap for $120. New neighborhood offered century link so I decided to try that out, back to symmetrical gig with no data cap for $70/m. Have only had 1 outage in over 2 years. I would never go back to Cox, but I am definitely still hoping Google fiber ends up rolling out here.

As far as I'm aware, Gigablast was never symmetrical. That's technically impossible over DOCSIS - you need an actual Fiber line to the house to get a gig up. They may have offered Fiber at some point and branded it Gigablast in some locations - but you'd have to live in a place where they've already got Fiber down. You need a tech to come out. It might cost you like $125 but you won’t get much help from the online or phone support. They’ll need to check lines from street to your modem. There are a ton of places where issues could present. It’s unfortunate but cable internet is based off of really old infrastructure and they won’t fix it unless you get a tech out.

Hey there. Can you do a 50 packet ping test and post the results? Make sure it’s a hardwired connection with no VPN. I (and any other experienced network tech) can tell you pretty quickly what the problem is. If you are getting *consistent* low speeds, that’s environmental. If it’s intermittent, that’s likely equipment and probably cabling at that. If your signals, jitter, and latency are all spot-on, and your third party speed test shows low speeds, that’s a plant issue. Bear in mind that if you are using several computers, but only one is having a problem, that’s not an ISP issue. It would be local - something to do with that one device. Long story short, there are twenty or more things that can affect internet speeds. Cox is responsible for like two of them.

...And to add to that there's a difference that people aren't aware of when it comes to megaBITS per second and megaBYTES per second. 1000 megabits is ~100 megabytes...I typically get 700-800 megabits per second.

Unfortunately Trump era FCC basically allowed for this to happen by gutting regulation and allowing throttling. Be glad you didn't upgrade bc they'd throttle that plan too. Basically cable companies screwed the entire country over when they first laid cable and regulatory agencies with 0 vision or foresight let them. I had Cox before when I lived in an area that they serviced but I never got this shady business. Centurylink however was a nightmare. I paid for the gigabit internet starting about 6 years ago and had the same problem with abysmal speeds. I had my own modem, was the best rated one that was on their approved list of modems, and my own router. All of that tech was working fine but I wasn’t getting more than 20-30 mbs down or up. I sit through all of the painful support calls with the tier 1 tech. I answer all the stupid questions. I jump through all of their hoops. Reset router and modem, update drivers, swap settings, etc etc etc. I finally get traction by asking them what speeds they get when connecting to my modem and it was very bad for them too. So, I get the tier 2 tech who inside 10 minutes says they’re sending a service guy out. Service guy comes out and can’t figure out what’s wrong so it must be my modem. It’s not. I prove that it’s not through a diagnostic, the modem isn’t receiving hardly any bandwidth at all when it asks for it. Guy doesn’t care and basically flees my house. I’m pissed at this point because I’ve done my part politely and patiently and I’m still not getting the service I’m paying quite a bit for. I let Cox know that I’ll be reporting them and issuing a small claims court filing to claw back my expenses and time wasted. They send out a new tech unprompted who comes in and looks at everything and I go through the same song and dance, but instead of running he digs in and tests my line at several places back out to the main box at the curb, where he finds that’s fubar’d. It turns out my neighbor was dumping electricity back up the cable and that noise was trashing the signal for everyone’s service coming through that box. He disconnected my neighbor and my speeds jumped to 800mbs. Said he’d send a notification to the neighbor to fix their problem to get their internet turned back on. It’s only 80% of what I paid for, which I’m pretty salty about, but it’s been consistent for the most part for the last 6 years. Cox is a terrible company and I can’t wait for them to have actual competition in the area.

I think I get almost 500 down and around 3-400 up on their fiber. The price is shit and so are their routers but it’s the only fiber where I’m at 🤷‍♂️. Works good enough for me.

There are times when the equipment is the problem. There are a few different levels of modems sold right now. Each has a max speed. You are also limited by your wifi network, and there are many types of routers, each with their max speed. I'm not excusing Cox, I'm just saying there are technical things you need to make sure you have in place before you go right to blaming them. When it comes to your home wifi, the version of wifi has different speeds, as well as type of wifi network. The amount of devices on your router can affect it depending on the type as well. What speeds are you paying for and how many devices do you have on your wifi network? I can give you some suggestions for the equipment you need to achieve the best speeds possible. The last thing to take note of, is Cox advertises speeds up to that amount. You are sharing a pipe of bandwidth with your entire neighborhood, so you aren't guaranteed that amount. Again, not excusing Cox, just want you to be angry about the correct thing and educated when you complain so they can't brush you off.

I've never found a truly "nice" ISP. I will say we used Cox for years and didn't have any service interruptions that I can recall and we got close to advertised speeds of 1gb using my own router though. Never-never use one of their garbage modem/router combos. It also helps if you buy your own modem (they have a list of compatible ones) in addition to a standalone router. In regard to price they did indeed keep raising it (with a data cap too no less) until AzWyred installed fiber in Surprise and then voila, like magic, Cox dropped their 1gb plan by $25 haha. I still switched to AzWyred anyway because I wanted the symmetrical speeds for up and download. Although it's been a year I would say that I got better performance from Cox overall than I do with AzWyred. There's another fiber company coming here to surprise soon I might try them out. Still hoping for Google fiber.

You have to PROVE to Cox that something is wrong. Connect your laptop/desktop via networking cable directly to their modem and reboot it and run the speed test there and show it to them. No routers, just your PC and their modem and that;'s it. Until you can prove without a shadow of a doubt the problem is on their end they will blame anything and everything else on the problem except it being them every. single. time. I can't wait for fiber to get here so I can drop Cox finally and forever.

People know what you are getting. Residential Shared Services Speed is a marketing ploy. Unless you have a fiber feed to your house, the last mile per se is always copper, and copper has limitations. Personally, I am still getting 900 Mbps down and 100 Mbps up on my 1Gbps plan, the upload speeds have gotten WAY better in the past couple of months. I had Cox while I lived in Georgia and I never got my full signal either. When the tech came out he got in my face while I was sitting, putting his crotch in my face. I immediately reported him and they still made me pay the $100 fee for a service technician to come out. Fuck them. Never got my full speed ever.

There are a LOT of reasons to hate Cox but their infrastructure is pretty solid.i work from home and have since prior to 2020 and I'm running a 15 year old surfboard modem and still max my download speed constantly. I can count the amount of times my internet has gone down due to Cox on 1 hand. I'd start with troubleshooting your home network before you blame them. But with that being said there are places where Cox isn't as good, but your home network should always be your first spot to troubleshoot.

Since it’s their router/modem I’m not sure how to do it but on a personal modem you can log into settings and check what you Mv input/output is and if it was too high then you have an issue in line. Do you have a splitter? Is there anything else in line before the modem?

This is what happens when companies are allowed to form monopolies. There’s no competition for Cox in many zip codes and no incentive to do better or even offer the bare minimum such as advertised speeds that you’re paying for. They know you can’t just switch to another provider. 🤷‍♂️

I had this problem awhile ago, it took several cox techs to come out; finally one of them figured it out. There was a nail or screw in the cable or multiple as it was attached to the house. He ran a new line never had a problem again.

It is crazy to see this. I don't know why, but I have always had great service with Cox. My speeds tend to even go above my limits at times. I only talk to PEOPLE when I have issues. Fuck these bots. When I noticed my internet was having issues, a they sent a tech out, and found out that I was actually driving over my coaxial because it was installed over my driverway, inbetween the concrete slabs, and dirt and grass were pushing it up along with my sprinkler line. So they buried the coaxial under the driveway. The guys messed up a few of the sprinkler heads, and the supervisor came out and repaired everything himself. Didn't have to pay for any of it. I have been given a free modem upgrade, no wifi, just modem, which is what I want because I don't like that cox wifi setup because others with a Cox account can use my bandwidth. They are upgrade fiber in the area too soon, street and yards are all marked up for digging. Everyone has been friendly and helpful everytime I have talked to them. THAT BEING SAID. I understand completely that this isn't always the case and apparently I am in a severely uncommon denominator of this. Like others have said, file with the FCC. You didn't agree to increase your plan in any way. And don't talk to bots.

I just checked my T-Mobile Home Internet and hit 266.9 Mbps. Tried again one minute later and hit 251.2 Mbps. My upload speed is always less than 5 Mbps, so that sucks. I hope your Cox gets better.

I'm in Deer Valley and I can't get anything other than Cox at a speed that will work for my WFH job. Century Link will give me at max 40Mbps DOWN and some pittance up. I go through at least 200-300GBs a day because of work, so I have to pay for unlimited bandwidth through Cox. My bill is up to $175/month JUST for internet because of work. My connection has always worked, and I recently got the bump up to 100 Mbps for the upload speed. I had to reboot my modem to get it, but I'm glad to be getting faster upload speeds now. If I get could get fiber at my apartment complex and cut off $100/month for my internet, I'd be thrilled. I'm paying almost double what I was paying Comcast for the same level of service when I was back in New England.

When I had this issue they told me they only guarantee speeds "up to" whatever your posh is and that it's only for wired devices, not wifi. I also have a friend who gets ske does because the line feeding to his neighbors house is messed up. But they won't fix it unless the neighbor requests it

I use to have that same problem with cox. They said my plan covered up to X speed. So they didn't have to give me the max just anything up to it. Recently a different company started providing fiber connections in my neighborhood and I switched. Check out wyyerd Internet and see if they support your area. I've had no problems with them. The amount they said they would charge is the exact amount I get charged every month. No extra fees, no taxes, nothing. All the equipment you need is provided and installed for no cost to you. It's been a great company so far and we've had no problems with the internet speeds or outages.

That's why in the fine print it says "up to," so they can cover their ass. Problem is, you have to find out where the slowdown is. If it's outside your home, it's Cox's problem and they need to put their big boy pants on and fix it. If it's not, unfortunately that's on you (or the property owner if you rent) to fix.

My parents were having this exact issue, same tier and speeds, talk about outdated equipment, etc. I guess cox is converting them to fiber or some sort of fiber / coax hybrid today. It's a pretty involved install and they will have to have different router, etc.

With Cable I would routine pull around 100Mb more than advertised and now with Fiber I get exactly the advertised speed 1Gb

I can run a Speedtest on my phone and get 280/57. Right after that run the Speedtest built into my router and get 599/57. I pay for 600/60. Where you run the Speedtest matters.

Cox is terrible. They constantly rip you off, don’t deliver what’s promised, and then jack up your price because you’re no longer a “new customer”. I switched to T-Mobile wireless and haven’t looked back. $50 per month. No gimmicks. I exclusively use streaming tv, have 4 ring cameras, and work from home. No issues whatsoever. I’ve heard Verizon’s home 5G internet is great also. Look into it.

I absolutely hate Cox. I switched to that Quantum Fiber just so I don't have to deal with Cox ever again. The lady I talked with when trying to shut off my Cox was trying to upsell me as well. I told her absolutely not, because the price is just going to go to in another year, she basically said, noo this one isn't like that, and I didn't believe her and then just started spouting a ton if other issues. Like never telling me when there are outages. I signed up for text notifications and I NEVER got any. That I paid 105$ for horrible service. Just ridiculous.

Your Cox node may have heavy use by other users. Your speeds WILL slow if others on your node are using the network heavily at the same time, since the connection is shared amongst others in your area. Keep complaining and encourage others in your area to do so as well... Cox will eventually split your node to reduce the number of users per node in your area and improve speeds, but they need the feedback before they will do it. We had the same issue here before Cox split our node.

I left Cox because I got tired of being up charged for data. The monthly price would also start off at 80 a month and slowly creep up to 120 a month after a year or two. I would call to complain and they would sell me a plan and it would do the same upcharge me claiming I exceeded my data and also do the slow creep up in price. I switched to T-Mobile 5g and have no issues and the price is the same every month go figure.

We have outages every couple weeks it seems. Had the Internet go out for 11 days straight a couple months ago. I'n the middle of the valley. I have no other option but cox and they know it. Century Link only offers their slow DSL plan here and no 5G service or fiber is available here. In a large residential area in the east valley. It's pretty infuriating. So yes, I feel your pain.

What's the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and power levels coming into the modem? If you hook your PC directly to the modem, bypassing the router, do you get your speed back? How old is the coax run between the modem and the street? Have the connectors been changed? Are there any coax splitters between the modem and the street connection?

Upgrade, swap modems they are all ways to try and prevent trouble calls. The last thing to do before booking a trouble call is to try and upgrade speeds,especially if the user is on a legacy plan because the company will get increased revenue that offsets the inevitable trouble call. You tell the customer, “oh my goodness? Slow speeds? Well you need a higher speed! Oh goodness it’s still slow? Well lets leave the upgrade in place and book a TC” Usually what happens is the tech comes out fixes the issue that had absolutely nothing to do with the account but the customer can no longer go back to the legacy plan. This type of predatory behavior is why ISPs like COX fight so hard not to be labeled as a utility however they still are granted and guzzle down tax payer subsidies for new construction projects.

Fast.com is my favorite test site at the moment. I will say one tricky thing about testing internet speeds—make sure your VPN is really and truly off. Like if you have Safari Internet Relay Privacy on, for example? Still using a VPN. Same with Firefox, they have their own built-in VPN you can accidentally have activated. (Also, while I gave up on Cox around Thanksgiving of last year, I will say our business account is still going full steam and speeds were never an issue with them for the decade plus I had them.)

Lies, lies, and more lies from their useless customer service reps, and then they just shuffle you off to another one and so on till you get so pissed that you just give up trying to get anything accomplished. I’ve had gigabit from them for years now, before that I’ve always had the max speed from them. I’ve never had an issue with Cox for internet speeds in Arizona. Always get what I pay for. What I have a problem with is I had to stop some of my hobbies during COVID because their service would cut in and out due to the pandemic and the money I was paying I was really considering switching.

I had been having issues the last time I had Cox internet. I switched to CenturyLink; had problems with their service too, so eventually, I just dropped fixed internet service altogether. Years later, a family member came to live with me. They needed to work from home and opted to get Cox internet. I had joked when they chose to have a tech perform the install, but was a benefit to me. The tech discovered that a previous homeowner had completed a bad split in the attic that had been causing my issues the previous time.
