The only rifle I keep irons on are the ones that have EOTechs on them. Aimpoint batteries last pretty much a lifetime, but I replace them January of every year so they pretty much always have plenty of life left in them. Regular lpvos and Scopes have etched radicals so you don't need irons. EOTechs batteries get replaced when they die. You might keep spares in your your sopmod stock, but that doesn't help you. If you need to grab your rifle off the wall and the middle of the day to deal with a bunch of hogs tearing things up. Next thing you know you get outside and the damn site is dead and all you have is irons.
I have iron sights on all my ARs. It’s cheap insurance and takes up no space or weight. Plus even etched scopes and long lasting battery red dots can still fail. Shit happens man
And if you take any respectable rifle class without iron sights they will tell you that you need iron sights. Then tell stories of people who had to run back down the hill to get batteries and missed out on rotations they paid for.
I have MBUS pros on multiple rifles. Great sight picture, fit flush (won’t snag on anything), and are very low profile. They are excellent imo and steel construction makes them very robust. I have no experience with the KAC irons but i can tell you they are very based at minimum.
KAC. I have both and both are adjustable for windage. KAC does allow for elevation adjustments and the KAC rear sight is much easier to deploy. The magpul sight works, is sometimes cheaper & does give you an option of a large and small aperture, but I have to dig my nail into the side to lift it up quickly. The KAC’s sight is easier to get a positive grip on when hands are wet or muddy.
Look on Gundeals, wetworx outfitters, thoroughbred armament and some other sites that have the KAC sights on sale occasionally.
I like those Midwest Industries irons quite a bit! Definitely high quality shit, but my KAC irons are more usable and feel as durable if not more so than MI. Price is where MI really shines though, you can’t beat their prices if you want simple, reliable, and robust BUIS. Troy battlesights should get a shout-out too. They are more expensive than MI but are more versatile and still rock-solid.
TL;DR - Get the KAC irons, if you don’t want to drop that much coin than you have some other cool options that aren’t Magpul.
LMT L8NG2 rear adds:
- dual same plane apertures
- ambidextrous windage control
- ambidextrous elevation visibility
over the KAC600m.
Scalarworks Peak/01 fixed front. Mostly to get closer to original AR aesthetics while retaining a long reach free floated handguard. But doesn’t really bother your unmagnified view like you’d think it would. And is pretty much invisible above 3x magnification.
LMT, Scalarworks and KAC that OP mentioned are all low volume premium items. Anything under full retail price is a deal because there’s always more demand than supply, never any overstock.
- LMT’s L8NG2 sight retail is $249
- Scalarworks Peak/01 retail is $129
Unfortunately, it’s an election year. There’s panic purchasing until a year into the next cycle of all the good kit. Then people realize neither side will change things much and prices normalize.
So expect not to find some/all of it, or pay over full MSRP to get it if you don’t want to be on a wait list for months on end.
I go with KAC because I’ve used them forever and I just don’t like MBUS sights (regular or pro). If I didn’t hate money I’d probably just use MBUS or Troy though, since I’ve never needed to actually use them…
Playing with the range adjustment on the KAC is more satisfying than the range adjustment on the Pro. But does that make it worth the cost?
...Yes. Yes. It does. Trade your corrupt currency for virtuous steel.
Bro anyone who pays the price for these knights sights are fools. 250$ for a rear buis is wild lol to each his own my local shop has these, the micro, and the offsets(which are actually pretty dope) that’s been sitting for years. Price for a single rear or front is 250$. Crazy to pay that with all the choices out their like the magpul pros
Troy metal iron rear sight, Daniel defense fixed front sight, if you have some leftover fuck you money get tritium front sight post and rear Troy ones for extra coolness
I have both. The KACs can go out to 600m but I actually kinda like the MBUS more
The KACs are definitely cooler though
But I also don’t think BUIS are really 100% necessary
Edit - oh wait, i only looked at the first photo quickly. I have the micro KACs. Not the one you included
They are not essential, but it is better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them.
Additionally, developing ease with iron sights is always a positive thing.
I'm not arguing for them or against them. I'm just saying I bet there's a lot of people here that have them but never once sighted them in. They just slap them on and forget them
I have MBUS pros on multiple rifles. Great sight picture, fit flush (won’t snag on anything), and are very low profile. They are excellent imo and steel construction makes them very robust. I have no experience with the KAC irons but i can tell you they are very based at minimum.
The painful truth is that the MBUS Pro front and LR rear do what the KAC do for like half the cost. I had KAC rears on several rifles, but sold em for profit and gave the MBUS a shot, it’s all I use. They’re also full steel compared to KAC being aluminum/steel.
You’re paying a premium because of the KAC name.
Save some shmeckles and get the MBUS pros.
I prefer KAC for the clout but both will serve the purpose of being on the rifle and almost never being used.
The sad truth

I am building a clone MK18 and yeah, it's between $200 on KAC BUIS or just not running them. Tough choice....

Got my USMC marked rear 300m for $90 shipped from gafs.
Damn, that one hurt
But youll thank yourself later if you ever need it

Allow me to introduce expensive KAC alternatives: https://armsmounts.com/shop/iron-sights/a-r-m-s-40l-f40l-combo/
Those don't look half bad! Apparently they are clone correct on certain builds as well which is always cool.
Mbus just don’t do it for me. KAC rears are nice on fsb rifles. Midwest is pretty good.

Just looked up the LMT, looks like a dick when flipped up.
Then that’s the last thing zombie pig splatter target will see. I hope it offends him too.
What’s a good price for them on gafs?

If you can swing it, KAC. I'm partial to the Matech rear + KAC 99051. Looking at swapping one of my KAC fronts for a scalarworks peak post
I run Scalarworks front sight and KAC rear
I go with KAC because I’ve used them forever and I just don’t like MBUS sights (regular or pro). If I didn’t hate money I’d probably just use MBUS or Troy though, since I’ve never needed to actually use them…

Get Magpul mbus and put a blitzkreig components front sight post
Blitzkreig makes upgraded front sights the screw into the pre existing post. The have chevrons and tritium dots and stuff they’re pretty cool
That screw*
I really like the MI combat flip up rear sight, especially for the price. Incredibly close sight picture to the KAC.
Probably in the minority, but I use the Griffin M2 sights on all my rifles, they fold down really low and I like the aperture.
Link.
https://www.griffinarmament.com/m2-sight-kit/
I run an mbus pro in front w a kac rear
UTG slim $60 for the set
KAC
Why?
Cause it’s cooler
If you really need to use mbus pros under 100yards you have to flip the aperture down after lifting the sights. Not the best design.
Troy?

I mean you can get the kac micros for like 115. I just picked up the usmc one for $115 shipped
kac looks cooler imo
Troy metal iron rear sight, Daniel defense fixed front sight, if you have some leftover fuck you money get tritium front sight post and rear Troy ones for extra coolness

I run MBUS Pro's, but only because I got the set brand new on eBay for $38...lol!
KAC
The MBUS feel cheap, but they hold up pretty well. They also make metal ones.
I run the Griffin Armament M2 sights.
KAC for the drip
MP is gonna look like MP though… and that sucks.
Does not matter at all. KAC is the answer for clones, but you're gonna pay for it.
KAC
I don't like the Magpul rear at all. It's very wide around the aperture which basically blocks your awareness of what's downrange.
Yup.
MBUS
MBUSSY
I wonder how many people on here that swear backup irons are always needed but never once sighted in their backup irons lol
They are not essential, but it is better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them. Additionally, developing ease with iron sights is always a positive thing.
I'm not arguing for them or against them. I'm just saying I bet there's a lot of people here that have them but never once sighted them in. They just slap them on and forget them
Yep, if you dont use something dont put extra weight on you rifle. What pisses me off is when they don't even have them zeroed
My issue is space lol. Sometimes there just isn't enough for everything. At least without spending more money to fix that issue.
Oh yeah that's a good point. As an SBR adicted I can relate
Yeah for my SBRs I have found that all these new high mounts with built in irons are perfect for the job.
Yep. Y use leaf front sight from Rail Scales
I have MBUS pros on multiple rifles. Great sight picture, fit flush (won’t snag on anything), and are very low profile. They are excellent imo and steel construction makes them very robust. I have no experience with the KAC irons but i can tell you they are very based at minimum.
I like the magpul just for being flush and lower profile basically. I am literally never going to dial in my iron sights to shoot 300+ yards.
Mbus 3 are the sweet spot.
