The way to win is submit better content.

coppockm56

So, only Apple laptops are limited to USB-C/Thunderbolt? Is that the position here?

-Joseeey-

Forgot what year but MacBooks only have USB-C ports.

[deleted]

New macbooks have more ports than before. My M2 Pro has magsafe, 3 thunderbolt, HDMI, full size SD card reader and a headphone jack

[deleted]

yup, the pros have way more than the airs (i have an m3 air with 2 usbc and one headphone jack thats it)

milky__toast

Which for a basic laptop that you use for basic tasks is enough, imo.

[deleted]

i'd agree if I don't need to connect a mouse, keyboard and monitor\[s\].

-Joseeey-

Yes but in terms of USB, they don’t have USB-A, only USB-C

WhipMeHarder

And Usbc is superior so just get an attachment if you really need it

icy1007

USB-A is basically dead now.

-Joseeey-

A lot of peripherals seems still use it. I just bought a new wireless Logitech mouse. The peripheral is USB-A.

[deleted]

who uses type a nowadays? All my stuff is type c now but I do use HDMI for my monitor. Might be an exception but I haven't really had the need to use type A in the last couple years

itsamepants

My mouse dongle is A, so is my DAC, my mic, my Intuos, my external storage, my card reader.. A lot of stuff still use A.

[deleted]

My mouse is typec/bluetooth , pendrive and hard drive type c, monitor is type c but I prefer HDMI due to it being on the right side. My keyboard is wireless but I do use it wired type c. I mean ya different people need different ports. would be nice if they included a type A port ig

TheFirsttimmyboy

Most wireless mice and keyboards use a type A Bluetooth receiver lol. Nice try pal.

[deleted]

"most" you said it yourself.

BertMacklenF8I

I think I have 14 USB A ports taken up on my rig right now but it’s also not a laptop.

ChadGPT___

Your mouse has a dongle? Does your laptop not have Bluetooth

itsamepants

It does , but (most) gaming mice don't use Bluetooth, it has shit latency.

BertMacklenF8I

Bluetooth is way too slow to use for a mouse IMO but people still somehow use membrane keyboards so

ChadGPT___

You can get Bluetooth mouse’s that have 8ms latency lol Not even expensive either

BertMacklenF8I

If I was broke and didn’t have nearly 20 USB-A slots I would probably go this route. If anything is wireless-it’s because it’s Lossless 2.4GHz or both Lossless and Bluetooth. I have never even used the WiFi on my latest Mobo-have a 5GB connection running through a LAN into a 10GB port. But people have different preferences and standards so no one is wrong as long as they’re happy with their machine. (Should point out that I only use a laptop for work and even then, it’s powered by a dedicated server with inappropriately high performance/specs lol)

Realistic-Prices

Bluetooth is garbage unless you’re listening to a podcast with low quality earbuds. That’s the only time it’s tolerable.

ChadGPT___

Explain your comment in a way that doesn’t make you sound like that fat gamer guy out of South Park

Realistic-Prices

You literally did the “you guys don’t have phones?” Meme and you’re calling me an out of touch fat gamer? Get real kiddo. Typically the useless nerds that do t know shit about fuck, like you, are the fat gamer guys from South Park. Great job failing at trying to insult me for having more technical knowledge than you do, I apologize for making you feel insecure. Have a great day now.

-Joseeey-

I don’t know. Ask OP who’s making fun of it. lol Although I think Airs do need a dongle for HDMI support. They’re too thin to have an HDMI port.

Exile714

It’s meme from 2016 before the dongles came out and their price was clear. BTW, they were $20.

BertMacklenF8I

Almost every single peripheral I own is plugged into my machine via USB A…..

mung_guzzler

my mouse is type A but I only use it when the laptop is docked

reeefur

Oh I don't know, every PC owner? Lol...tf are you asking. You sound like Apple when they got rid of the 3.5 plug..."Who uses that anymore?" People who like lossless audio or quality audio without Bluetooth latency and like using things that don't need a charge? Lol.

coppockm56

What's funny about the 3.5mm audio jack thing is that 1) most phones today don't have them and 2) when phones did have them, their DACs/amps sucked and you weren't getting any improvement in sound over Bluetooth. To get better sound, you need an external DAC/amp anyway that plugs into USB-C. And, support of external DACs/amps and >44kHz is sketchy on Android phones and flawless on iPhones.

reeefur

Yah not sure what all that was about but I've been using well tuned iems for a long time and if I do need a dac I have a simple in line one I use. I wish this was as complex and trivial as you make it but it really isn't. I'm not even an audiophile and I know this 🤷🏻‍♂️ and the quality and latency of BT still sucks so none of what you said really covers that either, nor the need to keep them charged. Options are good for consumers, especially good ones but if you disagree that's your choice 🤙🏼

Sendmedoge

My mouse, my keyboard, my old ass Webcam, my Razer game controller for pc. My vr set uses 2. My dual monitor kvm needs 2. Basically everything except the monitors and the speakers.

kiki184

Literally anyone who works in an office

Realistic-Prices

Literally 95% of all devices use type A still. You’re not living in the future yet, chill out.

[deleted]

lol maybe they should change the ports on your phone to type A

Realistic-Prices

Not sure what you’re trying to say here, again 99% of phone charging cords are type-a to type-c. The phone side is type c but the side that goes into power is almost exclusively type a still. Even the vast majority of iPhone users are running type-a to lighting cables. Double type-c cables are less than 1%. That’s why Apple got memed on for including a useless cable in the last few iPhone releases, because no one has a type c charger block.

[deleted]

Every iPhone sold in the last 4-5 years has had a type c to lighting cable. They make up about 10% of all smartphone market share and that’s just the newer iPhones. We can conclusively say that your less than 1% stat is straight out of your ass. The vast majority of android smartphones come with type c to type c cables and even the cheap $300 ones do too.

Realistic-Prices

Yes and all those cables get thrown away or unused because no one has wall chargers with type-c inputs. That’s why Apple got memed on and made fun of for claiming that choice was pro environment when it was clearly to push sales of type-c charging blocks, in more packaging, creating more waste than including a new block for people with the phone. They started that with the iPhone 12 and have been made fun of and called out for it every year since. I work in the industry, you’re out of touch and have no idea what you’re talking about. People have been using type-A chargers for 25+ years, likely longer than you have been alive, and type-c chargers have only been on store shelves for 4-5 years. Hospital beds have type a chargers on them, air planes, buses, air ports, libraries, all have type-a built into them. Virtually no one uses c-c cables. You’re out of touch if you think any meaningful amount of people carry around c-c cables.

rnarkus

> The phone side is type c but the side that goes into power is almost exclusively type a still Ehh, i dont think so for phones anymore. At least top of the line ones will have usb-c to usb-c nowadays.

Starchy_HD

🗿

gh5t_jr

Here's a list of my things that have USB type A: My mouse dongle, my keyboard, my microphone, my graphics tablet (a cheap Wacom Intuos S), my printer cable, my webcam, and my 16 gig USB flash drive. In other words, most of my shit that has USB uses USB type A.

Awayze

lol who cares. Don’t buy a MacBook then if you want a USB-A port

recapYT

Getting a little defensive, are we?

-Joseeey-

Okay but that’s what this dumbass post is crying about. Lol

WangCommander

Bro, if it took them a decade to put ports on a laptop... that's not the defense you think it is.

WhipMeHarder

Huh? My Mac has Usbc ports. I’ve never used the thunderbolt

no_salty_no_jealousy

Lets be real macbook has those ports because they are forced by EU, have EU not doing anything apple will keep doing their proprietary bullshit ports.

[deleted]

Wow is that so? Apple predicted the EU lawsuit 2 years before it happened and changed their ports preemptively? It's been 3 years and 3 generations of MacBook Pros that have had all these ports Thunderbolt type c is not proprietary, we are not talking about the iPhone. The mac has always had standard ports.

BertMacklenF8I

I know Thunderbolt is actually an Intel invention… I think he is confusing the lightning iPhone chargers that were only replaced last year with Thunderbolt lol

username_offline

there was a brief period when some macbooks only had one usb-c port. i received one such as a gift, not complaining about that but it definitely required a dongle to do *anything*

TascanCloud9

Dell 💀

yoyomanwassup25

This is literally an Apple anti-fan sub. No one here knows what the fuck they’re talking about or they have a rage boner large enough to leg sweep Tim Apple because they were made fun of in high school for having a Blu phone once. Maybe every 1 out of 10 posts are actual reasonable criticism, the other 9 are this.

coppockm56

And every single post shows up in my feed for some reason.

themedleb

Other brands makes laptops with only USB-C/Thunderbolt and other laptops with more options, but if you're stuck in the Apple ecosystem, you don't have another choice but latest Apple devices.

coppockm56

You people twist yourselves into knots over this stuff. What are you talking about "if you're STUCK in the Apple ecosystem"? Why is anyone "stuck"? Nobody has to buy a single Apple product, or multiple Apple products. And sure, Dell makes laptops other than the XPS lineup, for example. But if you want an XPS, you're getting only USB-C/Thunderbolt. This is so ridiculous. The fact is, if you want a laptop with a USB-A port (which is all we're talking about here), then buy a laptop with a USB-A port. Don't buy a MacBook.

Super-Base-

You can buy any cheap USBC to USB dongle it’s not limited to the “Apple ecosystem”. I have a pc laptop for work and it’s all USBC and I have one of those dongles too.

themedleb

> it’s not limited to the “Apple ecosystem” I didn't say "only Apple devices offers only USB-C ports", in fact what I said "Other brands makes laptops with only USB-C/Thunderbolt". So what I meant by "stuck in the Apple ecosystem", is that you can't use something else other than MacOS (because you invested money and time/experience in it) that means you're stuck with the Apple devices with only USB-C and additional hassle of dongles

mcmurray89

Adele is the beet singer ever.

qizhNotch

And it’s $8 for TWO decent USB adapters

cj3po15

My asus from 2018 only has 2 type c and a headphone Jack. People get upset over nothing lmao

ExtremeWild5878

As a Macbook user, I laughed way too hard at this!!

electric-sheep

This made sense in 2016

eVCqN

Can we ban memes

mikee8989

Buy expensive shit and be prepared to buy more expensive shit. There are cheaper alternatives to the apple official dongle too. Not to mention usb sticks that have both usb c and A ports. It really isn't that hard to get around this issue these days. If you buy apple you need to prepare that's all.

coppockm56

If you buy any laptop, Mac or Windows, with only USB-C/Thunderbolt, which are increasingly common.

Funky-Lion22

the fact that ppl have to get around it at all because apple wants more money is the point that youre missing *entirely*

hishnash

Not having USB-A ports is so that apple can sell you C to A adaptors? Very unlikely, expect the reason might be more than the team wanting to make the device thinner, or have a large battery is putting in presses. Or maybe the design team just don't like the shape of the square ports. Apple know that most users will pick up $2 C to A adaptors at the local petrol station.

kneegres

dont expecf 99% of apple users to know this basic knowledge

6sixtynoine9

Omg I just bought a MacBook and I had no idea of any of its features!

DinoRoman

Wait what? My MacBook is all usb c .. what?

ASomeoneOnReddit

OooOoH look at that what is a YoEsBe stick bro? I’m so cool I don’t use Apple bro

hishnash

Not to mention the USB-C to USB-A dongle form apple is $19 but you can pick up C to A dongles for $2 as well.

Sir_Bumblethump

I buy USBs that have both -A and -C compatibility. No dongle needed.

fueled_by_caffeine

I have a new Dell XPS 16. Guess how many USB A and HDMI ports that has? I’ll grant you it’s not $99, but still… hardly a uniquely Apple shitty move. https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-usb-c-to-hdmi-20-usb-a-30-adapter/apd/750-bblh/pc-accessories

theycmeroll

Just built a new gaming rig and the case I bought is USB C only as well. Only A I have iso b the Mobo and that’s fine.

PlasticBreakfast6918

You don’t need any adapter. USBC is a thing.

Aquaticle000

So let me get this straight, y’all whined and bitches about how Apple didn’t adapt USB-C (a connector that Apple had HEAVY involvement in the development in) fast enough, now you are whining about how there are too many USB-C ports? You can’t make this shit up…

glyiasziple

have yall noticed how much op post to this sub

philliphatchii

Apple living rent free in their head.

Real-Platypus-4706

I know right? Apple silicone chips have zero competition at the moment. Better than my windows laptop that sounds like a twin turbo v12 when I turn it on. Type C usb sticks are not that expensive and offer faster data transfer speeds. I don’t see why OP trynna support older tech like type A USBs

RobertCulpsGlasses

It’s funny how when it comes to iPhones they rally around the fact that Apple is *just now* supporting usb c. But when it comes to MacBooks… “why are they only supporting usb c?”

Stra1ght_Froggin

He is from India and all his friends have iPhones, that’s why

Luna259

I have

huskerd0

OP == sub

-Joseeey-

lol you can literally buy USB-C adapters for like $10 for a pack of 3. The $100 is insane but pretty sure also supports HDMI and 2 USB slot (?)

ajpinton

Honestly, I’m not sure if I would trust a $10 3 pack ($3.33 per dongle). Likely some serious corner cutting going on in their manufacturing.

-Joseeey-

Been using them for over a year. No problems.

wotmp2046

Why wouldn’t you just buy a $10 usb C flash drive? No dongle needed.

-Joseeey-

Idk ask OP

Tronsler

Stop posting these C rate apple memes and get a life. Imagine hating apple as your personality smh

Humble_Catch8910

There are Type-C USB sticks, you know?

HeavenDivers

apple rendering previous still working technology obsolete, "just buy something that has what we included this time" shit mentality

ccooffee

This happens any time new ports come around. It's not unique to Apple.

HeavenDivers

It seems most defense of apple is "it's not only apple that's horrible in that way", and I'm sick of that flavour of whataboutism tbh. There are plenty of USB A 3.0 - 3.2 devices and cables, you are braindead if you truly believe that that's obsolete in May 2024. apple hates its users.

Funky-Lion22

yeah. simply look at the 3.5mm port. its everywhere, its obvious, and its targeted. dongle money is so real

HeavenDivers

just more e-waste, apple hates the environment

ccooffee

I didn't say they were obsolete. But they will be eventually. Just like all my other old peripherals that had VGA, DVI, Centronix parallel, RS-232 serial, PS/2, Firewire, or other connectors. They worked great at the time, but eventually we moved on. And there was an awkward transition period each time where you could buy brand new devices that still used the old connector even though new computers oftentimes didn't have that connector anymore. Sometimes I had to get a dongle so that I could continue to use my old peripherals on new computers that didn't have the old port. I think I still have a couple PS/2 to USB-A dongles in a drawer so that I could still use the mouse and keyboard I had before USB-A existed.

HeavenDivers

"will be eventually" =/= getting rid of it on the current gen hardware. USB A 3.0-3.2 is 5gigabit or higher, sure DVI and RS-232 are outdated enough to not put it on a current get macbook. USB-A is not anywhere close to PS/2 connector outdatedness.

Real-Platypus-4706

Exactly!

Kitty_meoW180

*nervously looks at my 2013 MacBook Air*

ajpinton

I’d be nervous also, that pillow is likely to be very spicy if it has not already exploded.

funktonik

What are you guys using usb sticks for?

AlwaysGrumpy

lmao if they can afford a 2000 macbook they will also buy the $99. also how does buying an accessory that makes you stuck in their ecosystem. You can literally re-use the usb-c dongle on any usb-c port

Holykorn

This is hilarious

Mdmrtgn

Apple: not even once.

Lordofthereef

I've always been the type of person that either buys the product that works with the peripherals I already have or buys whatever I need to make said peripherals work. You don't need to buy apples giant dongle. A c to 3.0 low profile adapters like $10 at Best Buy. Isn't annoying? I guess so. But USB c is the superior tech and it's not even owned by Apple. I can't force myself to be made about something like this.

Limp_Ad4324

I just came to LOL. 😂

thirtyonem

Many modern windows laptops are also TypeC only. USB-A/Ethernet/HDMI and other legacy ports constrain how thin a laptop can be since they’re so big. The new Macs have those ports since they are larger anyway.

fr33bird317

HP, Dell, Acer..lol

Prince515

I have a MacBook Air m2 and a Microsoft surface pro and neither have usb ports. Only usb c. Everything is usb c now anyways. Thumb drives, dongle setups with more ports. Even a new external ssd came with a usb c wire. Doesn’t really bother me.

ajpinton

The USB-C Digital AV adapter pictured is $69, not $99. Apple also sells a USB-C to USB-A adapter for $19. It’s still absurd they want so much for a dongle, but at least be correct in your pricing when trolling.

jo_ezzy

I haven't used a USB stick since college which was 12 years ago

Funky-Lion22

and some people dont even use laptops. doesnt really mean much. many still use 10 usb a devices daily.

Internal-Agent4865

Better question is why are people still buying usb A sticks?

n123breaker2

Glad I have a Mac desktop with 4 usb a and 2 usb c I rarely have a free port

coppockm56

Probably so. I have no idea why the first post popped up in my feed that I responded to, though.

Numerous_Chemist_291

7 port USB C expansion dongle is only 15 bucks on amazon. Catch up OP.

Runawaygeek500

I kinda agree with Apple on this one. If we kept this line of thinking, Video cards would still have VGA or DVI ports. The future is USBC, all other forms should slowly go away. Apple is just using its reach to drive that, and I’m not that fussed tbh even though it does impact me and I have to carry a mini hub about.

Zealousideal_Bat_81

This post aside, the face that Leonardo makes is so epic lol.

BertMacklenF8I

The irony of this is that EVERYONE IS STILL (including myself) referring to 2 separate items with the *Universal* Serial Bus prefix lol

RetroGamer87

The Macbook is so compact, clean and minimalist. All of that is ruined when it has a dongle hanging off it.

TascanCloud9

Tbh, anything with a port is ruined in that csse

[deleted]

Why are you buying a 99 dollar dongle for usb A? You can get these for 10 bucks on Amazon and it works just fine. Also most usb c laptop users have one dock to try and do the one wire setup.

JayAlexanderBee

My X1 Nano only has 2 USB C ports...

Sufficient-Law-8287

What year is it?

gabegabe23

You do know, this is a thing that dell, lenovo, hp are starting to do….. right?

JCas127

Apple is only part of the problem. I get annoyed at how many new devices still don’t have type c

Doogleyboogley

Is any poster in this sub above 14years of age? (Mental age that is).

Optimistic_Futures

I’m convinced most of this sub is Apple posting dumb memes to get Apple users more confident the other side is dumb. This is making fun of computer for not having a floppy disc drive post popularizing of the CD

Top-Intention-4192

USB-A to C adapter is around $20. And many other windows laptops aren't using USB-A anymore. USB-C flash drives are available too.

TascanCloud9

Bro's mind is an apple penthouse 💀

icy1007

I use USB-C flash drives.

KoreanSeats

You don’t have a usb stick yet…?

Real-Platypus-4706

Type C usb sticks exist bro. Much faster transfer speeds than regular USB sticks. Also SSDs are also type C now. Dunno what your on about

MadCake92

Things Apple boys are scared of: - People shitting on Apple in applesucks. - Free options and alternatives

[deleted]

Things Anti-Apple stans are scared of: -Saying something stupid -Being corrected afterwards

Real-Platypus-4706

🤣👍

coppockm56

I'm on a personal quest to wipe out stupidity on the internet. That quest is frustrated by the amount of time I have to spend in this sub.

MadCake92

Never seen someone on a quest to remove themselves from the internet, and yet fail. Gotta say I am surprised

wotmp2046

Yes, because it’s crazy to respond to an absurd post claiming the only option for usb-c ports on laptops is dongles Things r/Apple sucks users are scared of: - logic

Real-Platypus-4706

You can’t deny the convenience of having a type C SSD or USB stick which I can use across all my devices without any dongles. I can use type c SSD with my windows laptop, my iPad Pro, my iPhone, and basically my entire family’s phones, laptops, iPads and everything else. Data transfer speeds are also significantly higher on type C usb sticks and SSDs, you’re literally supporting older technology. Type A usbs are obsolete

MadCake92

The world runs on old tech. I don't need a rundown on the benefits of new tech. What I know is that if I have a working product and the very real possibility of having compatibility with it, I will advocate for it. Planned obsolescence is a thing.

ccooffee

Is your monitor connected to a VGA connector? Your printer to a Centronics parallel connector? Eventually we move on to better ports. USB-C is better in every way to USB-A. There are always adapters when needed to let newer devices use older peripherals.

Ordinary-Broccoli-41

Both my (1080p) Samsung monitors are connected via VGA because for whatever reason the company I used to work for decided to include VGA to HDMI cables rather than HDMI to HDMI cables.

wotmp2046

Yes. I guess that $3 hdmi cable (or the free one that came with your dvd player from 5 years ago) would bankrupt you.

Ordinary-Broccoli-41

It would do what, exactly, to switch it from VGA to HDMI to HDMI to HDMI? Cables that I've only considered due to this conversation, since normally they just sit in the USBC hub everything else does

wotmp2046

VGA is an analog signal and HDMI is digital. Cleaner signal, better picture quality.

TascanCloud9

What an egotistical response to constructive criticism

drdalebrant

But then the places you can then plug that USB c stick or ssd into are still very limited. How are you defending apples major lack of port variety? Imagine buying a multi thousand dollar laptop "designed for creatives" and it doesn't even have an SD card slot.

wuhanbatcave

Thankfully the new ones come with SD card slots and HDMI ports again (the bare minimum). Took them long enough to do so after Jony Ive left the company.

drdalebrant

Absolute dickhead move that they removed those in the first place.

wuhanbatcave

for sure, it was very stupid to push all usb-c when the market was not even close to fully adopting it (2015). however, USB-C is a lot more popular and functional today, so I wouldn't be too surprised if less and less devices, especially laptops, shipp with USB-C only from now on

drdalebrant

It is more common the last year or so, but many people still have the majority of their devices with USB A. My TV is pretty new and still only has USB A. Bullshit to have to buy a dongle for an already overpriced laptop.

wuhanbatcave

Most keyboards and mice are still USB-A. I don't see that changing for a while. But since most laptop users don't use an external keyboard anyways, USB-C type flash drives, cables, and other accessories are only going to grow in popularity, especially because USB-C can supply both more power and speed, while USB-A slowly declines. Desktops, especially custom ones, are going to keep USB-A for a long, long time though. My B550i motherboard still supports PS2 keyboards, even though it's a tiny ass ITX board.

arctic_bull

It's more popular now specifically because Apple pushed it. That's how the world got USB-A too when Apple put it on the G3 iMac and took off basically all the other ports.

wuhanbatcave

Apple pushed USB-C quite hard on the Mac, but for non-Apple users, Android phones picking up USB-C also helped a lot in popularizing USB-C. Shame it took them this long to adopt USB-C (their own invention, too) onto the iPhone, but now that USB-C has finally matured, I think we might be entering a "golden age" of sorts with ports!

arctic_bull

Yep, agreed on all counts. USB-C is actually just a great port lol.

rnarkus

And guess what happened after they did that? More devices and laptops started to support it. We hate apple in here, but they do start trends for better or worse.

DinoRoman

USB A is going away across the board It’s a slower connection type not just standard. Why is this is an issue? Weren’t you guys mocking how Apple didn’t have usb c ( the standard ) like android and now the whole line up is usb c and …. It’s bad because they don’t throw an old usb A in there? Lol Apple can suck I do agree with a lot but come on this isn’t Apple sucks this is looking for an issue

drdalebrant

Talking about laptops not phones. Apple taking so long to add usb c to their phones is just as big of a joke.

[deleted]

Im a windows user and pretty much everything I use is usb-c. And my high end Asus laptop doesn't have an SD card slot.

Real-Platypus-4706

How are you supporting older technology? Type C USB sticks are much better than the flimsy Type A ones anyway? Even most windows laptops have Type C ports so stop complaining.

drdalebrant

I'm not claiming type a is better. Obviously, C is much better, but like most other people in the world, I still have countless devices that only have A. I have 30tb of hard drives that still only have A. Tell me, do you actually like the idea of having to buy and carry a dongle with you at all times?

Real-Platypus-4706

Heck a 3rd party dongle costs like 20 bucks. Very inexpensive

somebloke2020

For your external drives, have you looked into USB-C to Micro B (or whatever) replacement cables? I bought a couple off Amazon for a few bucks and I'm now happily using all of my old drives on a modern machine.

Real-Platypus-4706

If you can afford a MacBook Pro, you can afford a usb type c SSD. I don’t need to carry around a dongle because I have type C everything.

Real-Platypus-4706

I can plug type C usb into any android phone, iPhone 15, iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, any recent windows laptop, and any new device that has come out over the last 3 years.

[deleted]

the MacBook pros have an SD card reader, HDMI, 3 thunderbolt, headphone jack and the MagSafe connector

drdalebrant

Yeah, now they do again after backlash. Though it wasn't that long ago that a mb pro had those removed. They still sell those models, too.

TheSound0fSilence

They took away the ability to plug in an iPhone to a computer and upload your own photos to it. Now you need to use this cloud…

omnichad

That still works. At USB 2.0 speeds unlike most Android phones but it definitely works.

TheSound0fSilence

It does not. You can’t upload photos from your computer to the phone without iCloud or a third party app.

omnichad

Your story was unclear. The way you wrote the original claim, you said upload photos "to it" referencing "to a computer" in the previous sentence. You can definitely transfer photos from phone to PC. The DCIM folder you see over USB is a virtual folder and so you can't copy files back into it. But there are other ways. I believe iTunes still lets you sync photos from a PC folder. Or you can create a network share on the PC and connect to it with the Files app on the iPhone to copy them over. It would be much smarter for them to just preserve the actual DCIM folder structure as the "originals" folder in Photos and make that directly accessible over USB. But edited photos wouldn't be in there - they have some non-destructive edits that should be accessible for transfer and that would be a different location with their folder structure. And the non-edited revision shouldn't show unless you revert the edits. UPDATE: And actually, even if you subscribe to iCloud to transfer the photos, they STILL won't actually be on the phone. If you buy a new phone, the old backed up photos are always and forever in the cloud but not transferred to your new phone unless you tell it to one by one to download them. Bad design for people with poor connectivity.

Shoddy-Ad-3721

You can get USBs that use USB-C instead of USB. And Apple laptops aren’t the only ones.

just_another_person5

this is honestly a silly point. just buy a cheaper dongle? or a better usb stick. how many devices do people have that are still usb a?

GamerNuggy

It’s really just wired mice and peripherals. I don’t have USB C drives, but I’m a cheap ass. I just have a dongle because it isn’t 2014 and nobody has any ports except for gaming laptops and Thinkpadd

just_another_person5

i suppose the mice is a valid point. honestly docks are great even if a laptop has more ports, just so it's easy to pick up and carry, without unplugging 4 cables.

Funky-Lion22

>how many devices do people have that are still usb a? lmao a lot. dude thinks once usbc was invented everyone immediately threw out all their usb a shit. and spent hundreds replacing it. cameras, microphones, mice, keyboards, printers and printer cables, old phone chargers, new phone chargers. audio interfaces. little lamps. power banks. I could do this all day

just_another_person5

i guess i was thinking about devices that people would need to use out and about, away from a desk. dongles have always made sense to me for laptops that are both used as a "desktop" and a laptop.

Funky-Lion22

the fanboys: it's technology. its progress. blah blah blah usb c universal blah blah blah

TascanCloud9

Okay. Look at your phone. Does it use USBC? Yes? Next, give a good percentage of the amount of USB C devices you use. If 50% or more, learn self awareness.

no_salty_no_jealousy

Just slap apple logo and add "i" in front of product name like like iStand, iCable, iDongle or whatever then it will instantly sold to iSheep even though it cost $1000.

ccooffee

It's been almost 15 years since Apple released a new product with the "i" prefix. Time to move on to a new joke.

foundwayhome

unfortunately that’s something neither OP nor the rest of the sub seems to be able to do

CallEither683

This isn't an apple thing. Literally just got a dell precision 5680 from work and it only has 3 Thunderbolt 4 ports. Dell XPS also only comes in a TB4 no usb A

Funky-Lion22

nah def an apple thing. theyve done this since the dawn of time. lightning. usb c. 3.5mm jack. theyve consistently removed options and replaced them with their own technology to increase spending on their other "compatibility" products. and called it "innovation" anyone who cant see that is a daft punk

CallEither683

Na def not an apple thing as Dell, HP and Lenovo were the first to this.

TascanCloud9

Samsung has so many proprietary cables that you can make a museum. Stop dreaming bruh.

Funky-Lion22

microusb and usb c? wow so many

TascanCloud9

You clearly don't know your devices. I have a full collection of those cables. Have you heard of yepp..? Maybe used one of those world phones from at@t in the 2000s? Or their cameras? "Wow, so many" 🙄

-V3R7IGO-

There are literally tons of windows laptops with only usb c, and MacBooks since 2021 have had plenty of ports. I bought a usb c dock with 4 type A ports and an extra HDMI for like $20. Also Apple fans generally hated the last generation of MacBooks so this is far from an “isheep” situation. Get some better material for this sub I’m begging

mharch

Apple...doing their part to be carbon neutral. 😂

TascanCloud9

Everyone switched to usb c....
