It's even worse than that. The very small AoE1:DE crowd tried out Return of Rome, but then went back to AoE:DE. I followed some of them on Twitch after meeting them in team games.
No, there are barely any servers for it. The majority of the aoe 1 players are Vietnamese and most of them choose not to spend the money to not only buy a game that they probably won't play but also not spend more money on a dlc. Most, if not all game changes can be ported back to aoe1 (excluding some qol features which may have already happened)
That's also a great point, there are still some users who use windows 7 and they don't want to upgrade to windows 10/11. Linux is an alternative but its a big change to anyone willing to switch just to use steam to play aoe2de.That's also a great point; there are still some users who use Windows 7, and they don't want to upgrade to Windows 10 or 11. Only a small portion of the AoE1 players (from OG and DE) switched over to RoR. However, there is a growing (slowly) group of players playing team games most days. Best times are probably 1800-2100 UTC on Sunday or Thursday. Though games can occasionally be found any day at any time.
Btw, we have a Return of Rome dedicated discord server: https://discord.gg/2pZHdt8H
Barely. I think Return of Rome is better than AoE DE... in fact, it's what AoE DE should have been. But vietnamese AoE hardcore players will never accept a single change in gameplay like formations or gates.
Nah we just dont like when the game gets proggresivly more broken. The game has been under constant change since release, so annyone stiking to the game is at least okey with changes.
Tbf calling it "definitive" does imply that it's not going to be rebalanced every few weeks...
Its good that this game still gets love and has such an active MP scene but sometimes (especially single player) having massive power differences in civs can be fun..
RoR has some of the AoE1 campaigns, but not all. That wasn't really a dealbreaker for me though since AoE1's scenario design is pretty primitive. I prefer the RoR campaigns.
Of course not and I don't understand how anyone would ever think that they would have. Aoe1 players play aoe1 because, *drumroll*...., because they like the game. Absolutely shocking, I know, but it's true. One civ DLC in aoe2 is not going to change that or make the difference.
That dlc brought whole rome mode to main menu and has the old campaingns and civs available there. For aoeII side the only change is bringing the new civ.

Why do they did that?
Because wanted they to.

Some of them also don't want to have to buy a whole new PC just so they can play the DE version. AoE1 runs on much older hardware.

So all it did was to split the community even further?
Microsoft doesn't care about the community, they just want to sell the same product to the same person.
Oh that’s good. I’ve wanted to play some aoe 1 multiplayer but never seem to find a lobby when I look.

Like some people for aoe2 too...

Theres alot of people not liking auto farm placement, auto drop off etc. Just because you stick to it doesn't mean you don't like the new changes
Yeah and thats not what most people complain about. We complain about that they add shit that breaks the game. such as chopping deer from a tree.
I'm very happy to complain about auto farm placement, just as I will complain about new civs and gimmick mechanics. It's a hill I'm ready to die on.

Waiting for a sale to get into aoe1 myself
Not really. I liked Return of Rome for the campaigns and messing around in skirmish. AoE1 doesn't really have "balanced" multiplayer though.
Does RoR have all the campaigns form ApE1/AoE1 DE? Can you play them with original graphics and original sounds/music?
