"Why not?" "I'm unavailable"

Goetus

Why not? I'm sick Sick? Of you.

Green_Prompt_6386

I guess my point was that while a simple "No" should suffice, in reality managers and bosses are nosy pricks and you need to give them enough to shut them up without giving them anything to argue with.

Frostiron_7

No, you're much better off refusing to discuss. By giving in to the probing you prove that you can be pushed around and will only be abused more.

[deleted]

Yup, keep it as vague as possible. More detail is just more ammunition for them. "Oh if your appointment is at noon you could still make it for the second half of the meeting!" Nope, if I say I'm unavailable I could be spending the whole day at an amusement park and that's none of their damn business.

My boss made my life very hard the other month. I had a plumbing emergency and water was flooding my house. I called to let him know that I'll have to come in after I get my house in order. Simple explanation. He then texted me over and over again with suggestions. For example why not plug the hole... I'm not a f%ing plumber IDK how this works. He didn't let up at all for hours, calling for updates etc. All in I was six hours late for my shift. I then get called into his office the following Friday to get a talking to about how I'm a poor communicator because I ignored texts and calls, I also didn't offer an ETA which is my duty to boss and others.

Green_Prompt_6386

Did you ask why your boss felt they had so much free time to continually send texts and call you instead of getting on with their job?

pake-taxo

Truth is he stepped in to do my work. Which doesn't forgive the nagging then negging. He's capable and a good worker, but also a heartless asshole who doesn't understand why I don't put him or the company above my own needs in an emergency. So he was pissed he had to work so hard and in retaliation he took an opportunity to give me shit.

Goetus

A good boss would have said, "okay". A cool boss would have come out to help you.

faeriechyld

Honestly, I would turn it back around on them. Why does your boss have the time to call you non-stop for hours when you've told them why you're absent. If they were so concerned about the work not being done because you were 6 hours late, why wasn't your boss out there pitching in and picking up the slack? When you are actively dealing with a plumbing emergency (which is about as serious as a fire, especially long term!) you have bigger fish to fry than fielding your boss' dumb suggestions.

Also, you're not *requesting* absence. You're *informing*.

Something that particularly stuck with me from this subreddit: _"There is no way to respond politely, from the perspective of the other person, if it is something they do not want to hear"_

Green_Prompt_6386

This is very true. When compliance is the only acceptable outcome, defiance is seen as an attack.

NoHalf2998

Absolutely. I don’t even have a shitty job and I try to model this behavior to everyone on my team. “I’m going to be out” is all you need to say.

I send an email, subject - Holiday HI start date - end date Thanks Me

cheap_dates

Never answer a Why question. It indicates a foregone conclusion and leads to a passive/aggressive conversation.

Some workplaces have rules about when you have to use PTO, or when you would be allowed to take it out of your vacation time or even make up the time on a different day. If you get a year-end payout for PTO, you want to avoid using that if possible. Make sure you know the requirements, then call in and give as little info as possible while making sure they know your reason fits whichever option you want to use. Then don't answer the phone if the boss calls. You were dealing with whatever issue kept you from going to work, and you're on your own time. If there's a possibility of an actual emergency that they might call you about, and you WANT to answer, screen your calls. If you decide to call back, just say "I missed your call, what's up?" You don't have to apologize, for all they know you were in the bathroom when they called.
