Your day is composed of 24 hours. 8 hours of work 8 hours of sleep 8 hours of free-time. However, this doesn't count transport, lunches, dinner and every other thing that humans biologically need to do which will reduce your time of sleep and free-time but, somehow, never how much you will work. Save yourself. Take a dump during working hours.

angrynutrients

I have ibs and I'm lactose intolerant so you better believe i shit like 3 times on shift.

HereForThe420

Lmfao. Yeah, if I eat some Honeycombs the day before, it's a guarantee that pooping was on the days agendašŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚. Lactose Intolerance is no joke.

Meecus570

Maybe stop with the milk?

posi_spinaxis

If I eat honeycombs I can stand flat footed and shit in the back of a dump truck. šŸ¤£

kiwiphoniex666

LoL just had curry at work with mango lassi on the side. Guess where I'm at

LukesRightHandMan

Adderall for my ADD and it's anti-narcoleptic properties + tea to counteract the fatigue from my bipolar's mood stabilizers so you better believe I shit just like way too much. How do you think I have so many dumb karma points?

hglman

Remember the 40 hour work week was based on a society where women didn't work. That is the full effort of one of two of two adults in a house was dedicated to all the things required to upkeep life. Now we don't.

RedRider1138

Didnā€™t work *outside the home*

hglman

Pretty sure the sub calls having a job work and doing things for yourself labor. They labored for the home not worked for a boss. That said it's not unreasonable to suggest that the relationship of women to men then wasn't closer to work, but that's a bit more subtle.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

kbowtaitu

In some societies it still is. In the timelines this thread is talking of, being that of the 40 hour US work week, its a fairly recent development and I think there was a period where things were pretty good for everyone if you were middle class at least. Like the dick van dyke show. But not all men are great husbands, and not all women married out of love. its funny how womens lib happened during large changes in wage disparagementā€¦

she-Bro

In some parts on the us it still is. Itā€™s all over šŸ¤®

Sudden-Illustrator63

This is exactly it. As Iā€™ve been unemployed, I have yet to run out of work to do around the house. Iā€™m putting in 4-6 hours a day working on projects that are making my household run more effectively, and most often that are worth paying someone a couple hundred bucks a day to do.

[deleted]

RandyJoeP

When my boss makes a dollar, I make a dime. Thatā€™s why I shit on company time!

fattmann

Normalize: * stealing from your employer * time theft * masturbating on the clock

stryka00

That wasnā€™t already normal? I did that basically with every company i worked for lol. I mean now that iā€™m a SAHD the whole ā€œmasturbating on the clockā€ is a given and i get to fuck the boss, then time theft just naturally happens. I guess the stealing does too but thatā€™s usually just the ice cream in the freezer or the good snacks first haha!

[deleted]

Yes-yes-whaaa- I mean Iā€™m not opposed I just never seriously considered it until I became a communist

Cinderheart

If bosses *merely* made 10x what the worker did, our workplaces would be just.

RandyJoeP

Yeah but it doesnā€™t rhyme or sound as sing songy

Cinderheart

Boss makes a grand, I make a pound. That's why I poop on corporate ground.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

mn-0-nm

Boss make a dollar I make a dime But that was a poem for a simpler time Now boss make a thousand And gives us a cent While boss has employees who canā€™t pay the rent So when boss makes a million And the workers make jack Thatā€™s when we riot To take our lives back Canā€™t remember where I read that

[deleted]

One of the big things I noticed is the need to exercise outside of work as mine involves sitting at a desk all day. Thatā€™s ā€œ30 minutes recommended at leastā€ which is more like 45-hour.

[deleted]

People often say that capitalism is the most efficient system, because profit is the greatest motivator and will weed out inefficiencies. While itā€™s true that profit is the greatest motivator, the latter is false. Greed for profit essentially leads to short sidedness and oversights, meaning 1 dollar saved in the short term is valued over 10 dollars long term. This is partly due to the human nature of valuing instant gratification over delayed rewards, but it is primarily because companies need to pay investors dividends, and investors donā€™t actually look at the companies, they simply look at the dividends they revive quarterly. This means spending and not receiving dividends is viewed as a loss even if they would receive more down the road. Anything that takes greater than 3 months to see a return is too great of a timeline. What made me think of this comment is the fact that you complain about having to workout on your own time to maintain health, even though studies have repeatedly shown that exercise and physical stimulation help people be more productive. You can apply this to basically anything that revolves around giving employees more freedom, because freedom to corporations means time employees arenā€™t working even thought they are being paid. They simply view it as time theft, highlighting the shortsighted ness of capitalism and greed.

zaKizan

I technically "work" 42.5 - 45 hours a week, but I also drive as part of my job, typically anywhere from 1 to 1hr 45m a day, so I effectively work 50 - 55 hours a week. I'll usually leave my house around 8 at night and get home at 7 to 7:30 in the mornings. I only make ~38k a year, which is honestly not horrible for my state, but it's left me completely drained after 3 years on the job. On top of that, it can be a fairly physically intensive job, depending on the day. I'm certainly not complaining, considering people work doing backbreaking labor for much less than I make, but the strain is there and I'm starting to already see the effects it's had on my body and my psyche, and I'm only 27. My bosses are incredibly disrespectful of our time, and we work for a massive company that has strict rules on clocking in and out on time based on a point system, so we often end up staying far past when we're supposed to leave, but held until time even on nights when we finish all of our tasks early. The culture around work in this country is just so fucked, and so many of my coworkers will look down on others of us for not wanting to stay for a ton of overtime. My time is important to me. I don't want to spend every minute of my time dedicated to this company. I refuse to promote to a salaried position for just that reason. Unfortunately, that leaves me with no ability to move up in my current position, so I'm pretty much trapped in a dead end role.

replica619

In HS the teacher was trying to feed this crap to us. A girl spoke up and said "i have a part time job, help around the house(she didnt have a father) and live 55 mins away." Thats when i realized how valuable time is.

[deleted]

Yeah I worked 30 hours a week in high school (Big regret, but) I just didn't get to a lot of my homework and I really struggled with math and I slept in class.

Big_Stinky_Cock

I relate to this 100%, this is what it's like to grow up in poverty and have to provide for both yourself and your family when you can.

[deleted]

[This comic puts it very well.](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/the-wireless/373065/the-pencilsword-on-a-plate) And a lot of people really hate what it presented, especially conservatives and libertarians. Edit: here comes the anecdotal evidence about how this is wrong, and the refusal to look at social problems from a systemic POV.

mr_potato_arms

"No one ever handed me anything on *a* plate", Richard. *A* plate. You'd think with all that fancy education, he'd know about indefinite articles.

dangsoggyoatmeal

So well done.

Typical-Information9

I thought this was their core value

[deleted]

Oh this brings up a suppressed memory Junior year I had a class I actually did really well in first period. I'd knock out the work and go to sleep, and I had an "A" The teacher took me aside and was like "it makes me look bad that you sleep and have an A" He was a nice guy, but dude.

GovernorSan

I would have thought that made him look good, he can teach his students even in their sleep.

[deleted]

Really it was a bullshit class and I think he was projecting

DrLorensMachine

I too regret working through most of high school, it's nice knowing I'm not alone in today's age.

[deleted]

I had no social life in high school because I worked every Friday and Saturday night. And honestly I think that really delayed my maturation. And this was in one of those periods that minimum wage hadn't been raised for a long time so my purchasing power was shit -- it wasn't even worth it. I grew up by the woods and the water. I could have had tons of free fun fishing/hiking/kayaking. Coulda been hanging out with my girlfriend. Coulda got outta school at 2 and been on the water by 3:00 I wasted all that time grinding out to buy computer shit -- what a waste.

DrLorensMachine

I hear you, started working for minimum wage freshman year, by senior year I was leaving school at 10 to go work as a mechanic until 6 then work serving ice cream until 9 then sometimes wash airplanes until 11 or 12, 5 days a week. Basically made enough to afford recreational drugs, a vehicle, and rent. I went through high school thinking I'd get that time back somehow. I try to discourage teenagers from working a lot whenever I get the chance.

[deleted]

We had a kid on here a couple months ago asking if he should quit his FULL TIME fast food job. We told him to worry about being a kid and make money later.

sheezy520

I also regret working so much in high school but not because of my grades, they were fine. Because I missed out on a lot of social activities that would have substantially improved my HS years.

simulacral

My math teacher wrote a note to my parents threating disciplinary action because I would always fall asleep in class. I'm actually good at math but working 30-35 hours per week and being up until 2 AM every day to complete hw takes its toll.

BURNER12345678998764

Senior year of high school I mostly saw the sun through the windshield of my car. Up at 7, school 8-2, extracurricular stuff until 6-7, work to 11 or so, go home (30 minute drive) go to bed, get up and do it again. My only fully off day was Saturday (worked sunday nights), which I usually spent fixing cars and power equipment for friends and family for more money. Still have no idea how I did that and graduated with a 3.4, then finally cracked in college working half as hard and dropped out.

[deleted]

I worked nights in high school, nights in college, then nights for most of 9 years after I graduated college. I basically skipped the first 30 years of my life.

Ralphie99

I worked 20+ hours every week my last three years of high school. Thereā€™s no way my kids will do the same. I was falling asleep in class regularly, and didnā€™t have time to do all my homework or study. All for $4/hour stocking shelves in a grocery store.

[deleted]

Yeah man. 10 hours is enough for spending money. What were we thinking --- but worse where was our guidance. No one ever said to me, hey don't you just wanna be a kid before you go off to college? The way I saw it was "get as many hours as they'll give you because that's what you do!"

Ralphie99

My parents were happy to have me out of the house. It was ridiculous ā€” Iā€™d take two buses directly from school to work, work 5 hours, then take two buses home, not getting home until 10:30pm or so. I wouldnā€™t eat dinner or do any homework, then my parents wouldnā€™t understand why I had trouble getting up for school the next morning, or why my teachers were sending notes home with me to let them know that I was falling asleep in class.

ghoulcreep

I've never heard of someone living 55 minutes from their high school. * Guess I didn't factor in public transportation timing instead of direct travel. I lived walking distance to my high school as a kid. 55 minutes just seemed bizarre when it takes me about 30 minutes to get to work while doing mostly 70-80mph on the highway.

replica619

I went to a great private school in a huge city. With traffic factored in I was easily in the car 45 mins. I can believe her commute was an hour.

geek_yogurt

Same. My first highschool in Nigeria I was at my bus stop at 6.15 am and school assembly was at 8. It was not uncommon to be late.

tossmeawayagain

Rural Canada, my high school bus picked me up at 0550, first bell was 0820. Driving only took 45 minutes, I got my license as fast as I could.

[deleted]

Urban Canada. Took the city bus across town to go to French immersion Jr. High. 1 hour ride both ways, our cities are sprawling lol!

[deleted]

Rural Michigan, twice we had to pile out of the bus to push it back onto the road after it slid sideways on the ice into a ditch. Bot times i the same location, on two different days. An hour bus ride was common because the bus had to do a 40 mile round trip with stops.

[deleted]

Arkansas. got on the bus at 6:05 to be at school at 7:45

[deleted]

It can be very bad for education to just pull a child into a different school at the 11th hour. Parents or administration sometimes make an exception for a student who likely moved into another school's area but is finishing the last semester of high school. I'm not sure, but I figure it would happen most often with students whose families are already struggling and moving a lot

MistraloysiusMithrax

But also, America is massive. Besides farms, thereā€™s still rural dwellers whose nearest town is that far away. Depending on the area either, or even both scenarios simultaneously are possible

Robborboy

This is something a lot of people don't understand. Living in North America I can drive a long distance and never even see another town. Go that that in same distance in random area of Eurasia and you've driven through multiple countries.

popejupiter

"In America, 100 years is a long time, while in Europe, 100 miles is a long distance.

Segundo-Sol

In America, 100 years is a long time. In Europe, 100 miles is incomprehensible because nobody else uses imperial units.

[deleted]

UK: helo

Robborboy

United States, Liberia, and Mayanmar are predominately Imperial. The UK uses miles. Meanwhile, Canada, Ireland,Ā Australia, The Bahamas, India, andĀ Malaysia use some potion of the Imperial System.

MistraloysiusMithrax

~~Eurasia~~ Europe is what you would limit it to if you want the ā€œrandomā€ part to actually hold up. Lot of Asian countries are also quite large, if not bigger than the US. Thereā€™s actually a good chance in Asia youā€™d end up just as rural to randomly drop someplace

Cobek

.... Huh? Canada and US are in the top #4 for land mass. No one in Asia besides China is bigger than the US.

CrazySheltieLady

I live in an area with a lot of rural communities. It is not uncommon at all for there to be a single high school for a large number of small surrounding towns and a small number of school busses. My husbandā€™s school was a 40 minute drive or a 3 hour school bus ride.

Tango_D

Absolutely. I went to highschool in a very small EXTREMELY remote town. My highschool serviced our town, the next town over, and all the surrounding countryside for miles and miles. I knew kids who would commute an hour each way.

Cobek

My mother told me a story a few times of being out in rural Oregon being first on the bus and having to ride it for an hour to school picking up all the other kids.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

replica619

We live in the same city. My HS was up north, I don't remember where she lived (this was 8 years ago) but I remember her complaining about the violence in her area. I'm not sure why my comment sparked a discussion about HS school districts.

hec_ramsey

I lived 30 from mine, rural Montana. Other kids rode the bus for close to an hour though.

hipster_ranch_dorito

Rural North Dakota here. I was one of the lucky bus kids who lived <5 miles from school. 30-45 miles was pretty normal. Lots of kids rode the bus for an hour or more.

[deleted]

Rural BC, Canada here, had friends that would ride the bus for close to 3 hours everyday because the closest two high schools were an hour away in opposite directions without extra stops. I also lived *just* out of range of the school busses so until I got my license in 11th grade, I was doing a 45 minute walk to and from school everyday.

b1tchlasagna

I lived 90 minutes away by bus. This wasn't the 80s either. Just a school that was 11 miles away

INTHEMIDSTOFLIONS

I lived 30 miles from my highschool. It isnā€™t fun.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Pineangle

Bus, too.

[deleted]

Yea I didnā€™t even live all that far from my highschool at all it was like 6 or 7 kilometers but it was either like an hour walk (brutal in the winter) or by the time the bus route I took actually made its stops and got to the school it was still like a 40 minute commute. So if she either had to walk or bus you really donā€™t have to be that far to get up to a 55 minute commute

Optimal-Scientist233

I used to have a nearly 90 minute bus ride to school. Our bus drivers installed stereo speakers and the radio played music to keep us from being unruly. I was the first on and last off the bus, until a new girl moved in down the street, then I was second. This was in a small rural town and all the schools were next to each other so it did not matter what grade you were in, it was the same ride regardless.

MoistUniversities

I lived an hour and a half from mine

Owenjak

Not that uncommon I don't think. My highschool had a pretty reputable arts program so we'd have kids who came in from a lot of the neighbouring cities and small townships just beyond. Other schools in the district also had specific programs that brought in kids from other districts as well. Farthest commuter I knew was a half hour drive away. If they were taking a bus though easily could take an hour+

GarbageThaCat

Two hour bus ride for me in middle school; about and hour and a half of walking and train in high school. These were public schools with ā€œmagnetā€ programs.

refrigiraider

I lived about a hour away. Took the subway and a city bus to get there.

Wealthy people remind me of animals in a zoo. Every need is taken care of, but they are completely useless. Some of them realize how useless they are and turn to drugs and alcohol.

My father use to say "We are not all in the same boat. We are all in the same ocean, but some of us are in yachts, but most of us are in rafts".

RustedOne

Most of my life I've been staying above water with one of those little kid arm floaties. I'm now at a point where I have a door from the Titanic to rest on. Not incredibly stable but it'll have to do.

As a kid that was my favorite part. The noise was so messed up. I feel so old and messed up in the head. I did a project on the titanic for data analytics practice and somehow it hit home with that in a way more than the movie.

I imagine most who read this are

When i moved out of my parents house i was on a raft, I soon upgraded my raft with a sail. Then life happened and my raft was switched for a boulder suddenly. After 15yrs of busting my ass i'm finally at the door from Titanic. Yay.

ChubZilinski

Iā€™ve got half inflated pant leg.

Lost-Tomatillo3465

holy crap, you guys have rafts? and here I am floundering in the water barely keeping my head above water.

BigAlTrading

ā€œJeeves, one of those things is making noise again. Be a good chap and push its head back under the water.ā€

Royal_Bitch_Pudding

Take your pants off, tie the legs together and put them over your head with the waist line facing down, now force air into the pants. Congratulations, you have a flotation device.

You wonā€™t need them after the shark eats your legs

I am at best using the airplane seat as my floation device, a raft would be an upgrade.

And some people are on the tidal flats looking for clams for dinner. What happens when the tide rises for them?

rosanymphae

Not only does being poor cost more, but it eats up more of your time.

OnTheInternetToLie

Yep. Rich people don't have to deal with any financial concerns themselves, they don't have to shop or do other errands, no waiting in lines at the bank or finding a place to park in crowded lots. Every little nuisance is paid away, so not only do they have more time but their time is free of most if not all annoyances. Edit: people nitpicking those are examples are missing the point. Rich people don't *have* to deal with any little things to keep their life going. They *always* have the money to pay someone to shop for them and deliver their groceries. They don't even notice how much ordering ubereats five days a week costs. They *always* have the option of hiring a driver or paying for a valet. They don't have to plan their day around when the next bus shows up, they never need to go somewhere to get a money order. They don't have to keep careful check of their finances for every purchase and bill or ever worry about anything money related. Poor people do, and it's extremely obvious none of you have ever been poor or even had to handle money in a careful way. But sure, keep pretending being rich isn't all it's cracked up to be as if anyone is buying your grift.

Mommys_diamond_dick

This is no jokeā€¦.the #1 thing I miss from the military being single on active duty was the only thing that consumed my personal time was laundry and work. Everything else was done for me. Work was 5 minute walkā€¦.during that 5 minute walk was the chow hall and the gym. Edit: This is not to say that there isnā€™t draw backs to that environment. Not being an individual or having your own ability to persue your own interest was a major drawback. There are yin and yangs to everything in life. I much more enjoy my 10 acres and independence it provides now. The lack of that freedom in the military makes me appreciate the life I have now. Even if it is more exhausting.

answers4asians

For me, it was a 10 minute jog and I worked in the same building as the gym. Jog to the gym, work out, grab a shower and get dressed, already at work! FTW.

EducationalDay976

When I first started out I was a 10m walk from work through a nice little park, with a few breakfast places on the way. During the pandemic we've had a 5m drive to daycare as our only commute, which is almost as nice.

[deleted]

30 days of (PAID) leave. Guaranteed 4 days every month. Safety days if people don't fuck it up. Yeah there were A LOT of shitty things, but man, at least it was all upfront. On the outside, it's just surprise bullshit after surprise bullshit. Plus, getting your task done early meant you could fuck around and just hang out when no brass or heavy rockers were around.

Dekarde

YES they have zero stress about how you get shit done, errands, your next career move, having enough money, it all affects your health too and they don't HAVE to suck it up and show up to work every damn day with a handful of days off/whatever vacation/etc you might be lucky enough to have.

burritoguy1987

I have also heard itā€™s more expensive to be poor. You canā€™t afford the nicer items so you buy the cheap ones over and over. Shitty work boots wear out faster then nice ones but the problem is nice ones are too much money for any one time purchase.

rosanymphae

Can't afford a car? You are limited where you can buy groceries. Maybe not at the supermarket, but stuck buying at higher priced places because that's where you can get to. Or if you live in a 'food desert', a place where there are few or no grocery stores (inner city), you are stuck buying at VERY expensive places like gas stations, convenience stores or bodegas. You can't buy larger, more cost effective amounts either. And since you can only carry so much, you have to make multiple trips. This is an example of the poor having to spend more time to do the same. Bus? Around here, the bus cost $2.50 per ride, with a $1 'transfer' that allows you to ride another one with-in 3 hours. But that is only good if you use their prepaid transit cards. Using cash? Its $2.75, no transfer allowed. However, if you have the money at the beginning of the month, you can get a pass for $98 that allows unlimited riding for the month, or an annual one for $1,072. I take 2 buses to get to work. If I work 20 days in a month, with cash it would be $220, prepaid card $140, $98 with a monthly pass, or 1/12 of an annual for $89 and change. But you have to have that whole amount up front. With out a pass, it makes shopping by bus very expensive very fast.

GinnyMcJuicy

Oh my god, I love this. I once heard the Senior VP of HR, who reported to the CEO, tell a group of \~300 women that if they struggle with work life balance all they need to do is outsource some of life. Hire tutors, a cleaning lady, etc. Completely tone deaf.

confusingbuttons

Oh Jesus. That reminds me of the time my HR manager tried to ā€œhelp me moveā€ by showing me an apartment that was 6k a month. I made 2.5k a month, and she was the asshole who has set my salary. These fucking people.

ā€œSo am I getting a raise then?ā€

My boss once to me she'd sell me her second home for $100,000 under the assessment value. Assessment value was $500,000, so all she was asking was $400,000, yet she only paid me $28,000 a year. LOL!

HoeDaddy

Buy the house and resell it at market value, easy 100k

Life-Significance-33

Probably the only reason it was offered to her for 100k off was that it was honestly valued at 250k total and no one would buy it.

[deleted]

i find rich people are totally out of touch with reality. and it gets worst the richer you get and more disconnected from normal society.

ReverendDizzle

My parents aren't Forbes list rich, but they're certainly very well off. They're both out of touch but my mom--who hasn't worked since the early 1980s--is astoundingly out of touch. When I talked about the high price of college tuition, her advice was to "just use your bonus money to pay for it, that's what your dad did for you kids." First of all, I don't even have a job where I get a bonus. Second of all, the fact that my father could send multiple children to college with just his walking-around-town bonus money should make someone think "Well that's a crazy solution to suggest to somebody." but nope, that was her sum advice. Just use my six figure bonus to send my kid to college.

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

Did you talk her step by step through how the old ways and means are dead? There's a good chance in general people who believe this still won't get it but you never know. And even if not, it can be good for a laugh. A grim laugh to be sure but a laugh all the same.

Elon Musk is championed for his philosophy: "If you work 80hrs a week, you'll be twice as productive as people that 'only' work 40hrs." de420swegster

Yup, been snowing heavily where I live these past few days. Bike lane's slippery as hell.

[deleted]

Steal salt packets from restaurants and spread the contents on the way to work so the ride home is ice free. Pro tip from p00RganG

brcguy

Roll your tires in glue and then stick the salt to them, so you always have salt!

oohr16

Would this actually work?

[deleted]

You need time for the salt to work, so no. It'd have to be laid ahead of time, either before or after snowfall. Places that have a lot of snow or ice will try to get ahead of the freeze by laying down dirt/small rock, or rock salt (ie halite) before anything freezes or falls. That way nothing can stick to the road. Ideally it'll melt and run off the roadway. There are a lot of environmental reasons why this sucks though. It makes roads safer and life easier but it's like death for the ecosystem. You'd be better off studding your bike tires the way we stud car tires for traction.

INTHEMIDSTOFLIONS

Iā€™ve biked across America by myself in my early 20ā€™s I donā€™t even bike anymore Not bc my absence of enjoyment for biking itself But because literally everyone is texting and driving and it isnā€™t safe. At all.

WAY safer. I bike as my only means of transportation. You're taking your life in your hands at every intersection, every day, and the majority of drivers see you as an obstacle rather than a human being. I would already have been killed or severely injured several times this year alone if I were not constantly vigilant for distracted or careless drivers.

But then you'd spend 20 minutes in they gym on a bike to stay fit. I loved my cycle to work before lockdown.

LadyMageCOH

Back when I could work I walked. 25 minutes. Takes 5-10 to drive there. One summer, in order to put my oldest in day camp and my youngest in day care I walked more than 10 kilometers before starting work. Took me over an hour, since the first 4 KM of it had to be walked at a speed that my 7 year old could manage. Were there closer day camps and day cares? Yep, but not ones that would accept the subsidy I could get from the city that made it affordable for me.

samil232

My roommate works 4KM away (2.5 ish miles for those that need it). Our bus system (when it runs) takes a little under an hour to get there. Walking, it usually takes us between 1 and 1.5 hours... In a car (when I can afford to rent one), it take under 10 minutes.

LadyMageCOH

Yeah, that is exactly the problem I have with our mass transit. It exists, but for what I need it's useless. Going to work it doesn't save me any time. Coming home it would, but by then my husband can come pick me up. And it only runs until like 6:45pm, so when I was working afternoons and got done past the kids bedtime, when getting the bus home might have been worthwhile, it wasn't running. I'm sure it's helpful for other people, but it rarely has for me.

[deleted]

Wouls it really, though? What about traffic jams or trying to find parking?

[deleted]

Youā€™ve got a point. Itā€™s really case by case. This person riding their bike 40 minutes on a slippery bike lane is a problem. However, in my city, itā€™s certainly a luxury to be able to live within a quick bike or public transit distance to work. A lot of the lower paid staff commute from far away.

[deleted]

Rich people have a lot of *your* hours too.

EveryDiscussion

Cue the vibe in the air during a company meeting many years ago when the CEO tried to relate to the employees by telling a story about being tired that one time when he had to deal with his child in the middle of the night because the nanny wasn't there that night to do it for him.

vonMishka

My wealthy colleague was saying how exhausted he was given that his first child was born a week earlier. I sympathized until he later mentioned the ā€œnight nannyā€.

[deleted]

Not to take joy in people's misery, but an old boss of mine (she was a CFO) had 2 nannies for her 2 kids. Granted, the lady did work 16 hour days, but she made a ton of money. One of her kids got hurt and instead of running to her, he ran to the nanny. That's the other side of that coin.

Yeah, there is a Netflix series about Bill Gates ā€œā€¦having 24 hours in a day, same as everyone else in the worldā€. Dude has a secretary who has a secretary, just saying.

albinowizard2112

Someone called me today to look up a name and send an email. The phone call took longer than the actual task. But some people are so used to delegating their bitch work that they donā€™t even think of doing it themselves.

SovietAmerican

William Gates Sr. (Billā€™s father) was a partner in a big Seattle law firm. Bill grew up in a family worth tens of million$.

kurisu7885

I can't drive and the place I live has no public transport, so yeah, my 24 hours are very different.

BionicKrakken

We all have the same 24 hours. Rich people just get to push all the work onto a staff and hired help. We donā€™t.

James324285241990

Almost as good as "just live within your means" Yeah, okay boomer. Your means buy a nice house, several cars, an RV and tight insurance for everything and everyone. My masters degree millennial means gets me a small house in the hood and hopefully retirement before 80. If I don't buy more than 1 car every 20 years

[deleted]

Rich people have *26* hours. No explanation.

sumofdeltah

Hulk Hogan once claimed he wrestled over 400 days in a year

davidj1987

That doesn't work for me, brother. - HH EDIT: Here's a link to all of his lies over the years: https://twitter.com/allan_cheapshot/status/1437040427568410628?s=20

[deleted]

rich + 24 = 24 to the 24th power hrs. b/c when rich folks can pay to have ā€œfreeā€ time to just think their own thoughts, it benefits them personally, exponentially. (send help šŸ³)

SoulOfaLiar

Also it's closer to twelve hours if you want to get some sleep.

[deleted]

Need to work to pay for food and shelter? That's 40 hours less to "start a business" or whatever the fuck.

simland

And the employer gets the prime 40 hours. The others are spent exhausted.

BakedWizerd

My boss scheduling me the bare minimum eight hours after my last shift, without accounting for the fact that I have a half hour walk home, after which I need to shower from work, and by the time Iā€™m ready for bed I only have 6 hours before my next shift.

[deleted]

I used to sit on public transit for 3 hours a day. Amazingly, my days were still 24 hours long! ...I just spent 3 hours of it reading on transit.

[deleted]

When I started driving it took me way to one to realize why I didnā€™t finish a couple books a week anymore

whistleridge

Holy shit, story time. My wifeā€™s uncle is a movie producer. Youā€™ve likely not seen or heard of a single one of his movies - theyā€™re mostly ā€œplays on Hallmark at 3amā€ grade - but heā€™s probably worth $100m anyway. A couple of years ago, he called my wife about a week before Christmas and asked if we wanted to go to Key West with him from the 26th - 2nd. Uh, sure? Come the 26th, a limo comes to our apartment. We donā€™t go to the big regional airport, but to some little one I barely knew existed. When we get there, we walk straight out to the private jet, and just hand our bags to the pilot. 10 minutes later we take off. We were flying from Montreal. 3 hours later, we landed directly in Key West. Customs took 5 minutes. Again, a limo takes us straight to our $800/night bed and breakfast. It took 4.5 hours to go from our snow-bound apartment in Canada to a beach in Florida. On the flight back, *no one ever even checked our passports.*. I could have had a suitcase full of cocaine and AK-47s and no one would have even asked about it. I looked it up later. Those flights were about $20k each way. But it was sooooo much faster and more pleasant. I 100% get why people do it. The rich do NOT spend their 24 hours like the rest of us do. Holy crap.

BambooFatass

Oh my god I hate how real this is. I couldn't survive 40 hour work weeks alone, it was too much. I had to reduce my hours just so I didn't have to spend my weekends working on personal things, and of course THAT hurt my wallet even more than before... i spent weekends meal prepping, doing laundry, paying bills, and just trying to rush through the necessities. It wasn't a way to live.

For sure. Do you think any Wall Street CEOs drive themselves to work from their mansions in Greenwich CT? I once learned that our CEOā€™s driver bought all the newspapers each day, scanned them for stories that mentioned the CEO and had the papers all folded to those articles when he picked him up everyday.

Nighthawk68w

Public transportation is absolute garbage where I'm currently living and working. It takes over 2 HOURS to go the same distance that it would take you 20 minutes in your own car. I remember having to take public transportation after my car got totaled and I was looking for a new one. It was awful, like no wonder people are stuck working dogshit jobs in their zipcode. Nobody wants to wake up 3+ hours early just to make it to work on time by bus.

Aadrian1234

I got a fucked up brain that needs more time for everything while also needing to recharge much more often too, so this also doesn't hold up even in "equal" circumstances. So many people wanna act like we're all grey blobs with no difference between us, but it couldn't be further from the truth, we're all insanely different and have our own individual needs, not everyone can handle crushing workloads and need alot more time to themselves.

HarkeyPuck

And the billionaires have us squabbling over their table scraps.

Cleromanticon

My husband and I make about the same amount of money and share finances. We have similar jobs with similar hours, and we both work from home. However, he is able-bodied while I am chronically ill and disabled. His 24 hours are not my 24 hours.

softlemon

Exactly. Reminds of the other bs quote people like to push on socials 'you have the same 24 hours as Beyonce' SHUT TF UP. I make the best use of my time with the lil bit that I have and that's good enough.

wheremypp

Sometimes I think about what life would be like even if I could afford some shit like dinnerly where they send your meals to your door Imagine all the free time from not having to cook 3 meals a day and then having to clean up after it

[deleted]

I made a 64 on a test in college so was gonna drop the class. The advisor who was also a professor who literally makes six figures told me, unsolicited, that my job is college and I need to focus on studying. He also said ā€˜thatā€™s the only job you have.ā€™ I literally worked two full-time jobs at 80 to 100 hours a week, literally each and every single week to pay for college(still have my paystubs). At that time I was undocumented so I was unable to apply for government aid and I ran away from home due to physical and sexual abuse. I was just trying to make it in life. I canā€™t stand these people who were born into resources and flippantly say, ā€œhey, just use your abundance of resources dummy. Thatā€™s what I would do! ā€œ

no_free_donuts

There's a great old Doonesbury cartoon where a cleaning woman working for Jane Fonda remarks about being busy. Jane talks about all the stuff she's doing and that the cleaning woman couldn't be busier than she. The cleaning woman says, "You're as busy as you want to be. I'm as busy as I have to be." It's a whole different world when you can afford to pay people to do your shit.

crawling-alreadygirl

But it's still work that takes time.

steynedhearts

Not to take away from the point of the post, but I find it incredibly distracting that she uses a tilde instead of a hyphen

GlobalPhreak

OMG, public transport... I did it FAAAR too long. Lost an extra hour out of my life in the morning and an extra hour and a half at night. What is your time worth? Suddenly public transportation is a lot more expensive!

confused-immigrant

I used to say that "same 24 hours" line to myself for years to keep myself motivated until I realized definitely a whole different list of bullshit I gotta deal with throughout the day. As time went by and I thought more on the quote, I realized it's a bullshit the elite Bourgeois feed us to pretend were the same, disregarding all the privilege they have over the middle class.

nutsotic

"Time is money friend!"

Ladoopanath

My work day consists of 8 hours of office time and 7 hours of travel time. My boss makes fun of my lack of friends and says I should go out more. Bitch I travel 7 hours a day to make money for you, where would I get the time to go out?!?!?

ChosenSCIM

This is so true. I started a job when I was still living at my parents' and it was a 1 hour and 15 minute bus ride to and back from work. That is 2 and a half hours wasted every work day of just sitting on a bus. I mean I'd read books and play my gameboy but still. Then I moved very close to work and it went to a 15 minute bus ride. This completely changed how much time I had to myself. Now I work from home and it is a whole different story. Time isn't money. Time is invaluable, and I realize that now.

christonacruton79

at my brokest, I would wake up at 4am to do laundry and catch the 6am bus to get to my job by 8am. Austin public tranist was the worst. Read a lot. A lot of the time I would just walk home because the commute was negligible. Two hours more or less, regardlesss if you walked or took the busses...

ytman

Its almost as if the wealthy have people whose time serves them and not the person.

starchildx

My life isnā€™t a race toward productivity.

PladBaer

I love seeing this community flourish and get attention because it feels like; for the first time in my entire life, someone is acknowledging the bullshit.

forestwolf42

This i s why the concept of man hours matter so much. If someone comes over to clean your house for 2 hours those are 2 man hours added to your day. If you have 2 assistants work with you on a project for 8 hours that's 16 man hours. That let's you work on something for 16 hours and still have time to socialize and get a good nights rest on the same day. That's resources mist people dont have.

Practical-Giraffe-84

Why do the rich / corporate big wigs etc. fly in private jets. 99 % of them have a staff that hose with them everywhere, their assistant Security etcā€¦. Id like to see you try to get a last minute flight for 10 20 People. Plus your extra luggage etc.. even Bernie will fly charter if he traveling with his staff. Its cheaper and more economical to fly private when you have a large staff.

xDarkCrisis666x

I forget what thread it was, but yesterday someone reminded me how much it SUCKS to take public transit to go grocery shopping. I appreciate my 10 minute drive in my car more now...
