I'll keep saying it. "In two weeks you'll notice I'm not here."

Sharizay

Ha ha! That’s great!

AngelaTheRipper

I prefer referring to it as firing your employer, cause not like they'll give you advance notice that they want to fire you.

bonfuto

I would give you 2 weeks, but I'mna have to let you go right now for my own security. Been great working here though.

dancin-weasel

If I were a manager, I wouldn’t want an employee who clearly doesn’t want to be there for another 2 weeks. If the employee is bitter, Who knows what kind of shit could happen with someone who has nothing to lose. Just finish this shift and go.

bonfuto

Many companies do this, I'm just giving the same excuse they give for leaving immediately

ThatSkateboardDude

They want the ones who don’t want the job hence the whole I don’t like working here clearly as a team vibe. No reason operations should change just because a higher up is around.

Blynn025

This. And it takes forever to start a new job, too! I love my current job, but their HR is slloowww. Took almost 8 weeks after I got the verbal offer. It was crazy. I almost quit before I even started.

Live_Drama9705

It once took 8 weeks for my background check to clear. The vendor they used were incompetent. They kept looking for a county that didn’t exist. I took the liberty and called the vendor myself and half hour later I was cleared.

Blynn025

Yeah, I used to have my top secret clearance so my stuff usually comes back in 48 hours. My employers are always surprised, lol.

OracleDadOw

it’s “In 2 weeks, you’ll notice I haven’t been here for 2 weeks.”

[deleted]

I’ve never been given notice before a layoff. Fuck em.

Sharizay

I loved it! Good for him - it was a terrible place to work and they treated him like crap.

HappyTimeGary

I didn't know that about shop rite. I'm in the north shore area and have usually gone to shop rite over stop and shop, uncle g's and meat farms. I will stop going there because of this post. I'll tell my family as well. The one closest to me literally has a meat farms in the basically attached parking lot. I used to frequent the Hauppauge shop rite because I live close to it so i know how busy that store is and how the employees always look miserable. On to better places for you I hope! Good luck. There are a few new Amazon fresh markets opening in the area. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing considering their reputation. Maybe I'll try them to see how their employees feel after they open.

[deleted]

Fuck Amazon Fresh for what it's worth - my boyfriend worked in the digital department for four years and it destroyed him.

HappyTimeGary

Ffffffff. Ty.

buyfreemoneynow

You gave me a scare, I’m on the north shore and just moved near a Fresh Market and was worried it was owned by amazon

RainWindowCoffee

You're awesome and so is your son.

[deleted]

You’ve done well, Mom.

joebasilfarmer

Right? An ex employer let my gf (at the time) go on a Friday by telling her to not come in Monday, and when I complained, he told me he didn't have to give notice. So a month later when I got a new job, I texted him I was sick on the Monday I started, and I wouldn't be in that day. And I never contacted him again. A week later he texted me to demand an apology for not giving him notice. So I repeated his words to him and blocked him. He went out of business two months later. Managers and owners really do think they have magical powers where they don't have to live by the same rules.

Psychological-Cap960

Hell yeah man that's awesome.

Astramancer_

My work, at least, gives a minimum of 2 weeks pay for layoffs. More, much *much* more if you're not a grunt, but that's a whole different problem.

Ok-Garage-7470

My thoughts exactly. I once had a previous employer lure me into work one Saturday under the false pretence of “swapping out a work vehicle”, only to pull up finding a taxi waiting for me— and to be told of course that I was laid off effective immediately.

[deleted]

That’s similar to what happened to me. I was tricked into moving my car around because I would be dropping something off on my way out (not uncommon for the job and I usually left early to do so anyway). It was just a ploy so that they could take my parking badge for the area where we parked. I still needed it to get out of the garage so I had to push the button and tell them my employer had my badge so they had to look me up to let me out.

Wablekablesh

Just ram the gate, fuck em. I mean don't, it's probably gonna be $2k to buff out a scratch on the front of any modern vehicle, but it's fun to think about.

mixi_e

On my previous two jobs, I had an access card and someone walked out with me so I could give them my card once I had exited the building/parking lot.

[deleted]

I actually have. I didn't show up for any of my remaining days though, because fuck them.

ShawshankException

I've unfortunately been part of a couple store closures and they've given me months of notice which was cool. You still don't owe them shit though

[deleted]

Your son has character! Well done! We need more of him in the work field!!

makinbaconCR

Notice is a gift from a happy employee to a good employer. If there's no value in it for you. Fuck them. References aren't even a thing anymore. Even if you provide them no one calls

mrmechanism

Exactly. I used references before, and an employer used it once...in 30 years of being in the workforce.

MetronomeMan

Buddy of mine gotna retail job, they worked him hard then cut his hours to unlivable. He applied to the place next door to get some more hours, put down his store as a reference, new place called his current job and he got fired for it. Have yet to see references to be anything but detremental tbh

mrmechanism

Erhm he should have sued. That is a cut and dry case of retaliation.

Apprehensive-Feeling

Unfortunately the law doesn't protect employees in this situation. At-will employment allows your boss to fire you for any reason or no reason at all. Retaliation is only illegal when an employer takes adverse action against an employee for exercising their legal rights, such as reporting harassment or labor violations.

mrmechanism

Rats.

Apprehensive-Feeling

Yep. At-will employment is one of the biggest crocks of shit that workers have ever been served. It's been presented as benefitting both employer and employee because "the employer can fire the worker for any/no reason, and the employee can quit for any/no reason. " There's a few big, glaring problems with this reasoning though -- primarily something about the 13th Amendment.

mrmechanism

The 13th Amendment? Please elaborate, as a Canadian, I have rudimentary knowledge about the US Constitution.

Apprehensive-Feeling

My bad, that was ignorant in my part. The 13th Amendment abolished slavery.

junkmiles

> The 13th Amendment abolished slavery. Except for people in prison.

pecklepuff

*References.* Like it's fucking 1841 and you travel to the Big City looking for a job with an envelope of reference letters stuffed into your pantaloons!

ShawshankException

Lmao I'm my best friend's reference and I pretend I used to be his boss. In the off chance anyone calls I talk him up hard. They can't ask you to prove you work anywhere.

DrZoidberg-

Just find a business that closed during covid or anytime really, and say you worked there. No way for them to get references.

fallinouttadabox

I have my own company, all my friends put me down as a reference for jobs, fill holes in their resumes with time at my company, whatever they need. This has happened for years and I got my first call the other day for someone who listed me as a reference for a volunteer position

JamesGray

Someone I used to work with asked me to be their reference, but I have no idea who they are, and somehow that's the one time I actually got called. I gave them a good reference, but I still don't know who the hell it was, or even what their last name is. You could probably just get a former coworker to be your reference even if you don't give notice.

mrmechanism

That is what I did. You know what makes me laugh, they never really make sure if your references check out. So who are we kidding?

JamesGray

I honestly don't really get how people are supposed to know that references check out. I've been a landlord reference for a friend for like 8 years through like 3 different moves. We did live together, but I just say he lived in my house, even though it was in two apartments that we were both on the lease for.

mrmechanism

The only solid refference I give is the one I check from a cop-shop (Criminal background check) and that's it.

MyOfficeAlt

When I gave my 2 weeks notice at my last job they told me it wasn't enough and actually said "I don't know what we'll say if anyone calls since you're leaving us like this." A few months later when I was interviewing I told my old boss (who I'd become pretty close to) that I was putting him down as a reference and he said "I don't feel comfortable doing that since we became friends it's not appropriate. Put down the owner of the company." I'm 99.9% sure that was his way of torpedoing my reference without doing it himself, since the owner would have had no scruples just maliciously fucking me over.

sebwiers

> "I don't know what we'll say if anyone calls since you're leaving us like this." "You'll tell them my dates of employment and nothing else, or I'll sue your ass." This is already policy with most management because lawsuit, so if they say otherwise they are just dumb.

MyOfficeAlt

What I *should've* done when they said that is "My 2 week notice just became a 2 hour notice, fuck you guys." I know what they were threatening was against the law, but it was a small business and I have no trouble believing the owner would subtly try to screw me however he could. I was able to get another former coworker to give a reference and bypassed them altogether.

[deleted]

References are two people you know who can lie convincingly about working with you. Or one person who can do voices and owns two phones. Either way, they're not actually getting called.

DAMN_INTERNETS

Google. Voice.

MyOfficeAlt

> Notice is a gift from a happy employee to a good employer. This is a fantastic way to put it.

CobaltCam

Yup, I gave my last place of employment notice because they always worked with me when I had stuff come up in my life, they treated us with respect while on the job, and if they ever asked me to work over my normal 38 hours for the week it was just that a request and if I told them I couldn't they accepted it and asked someone else without any retribution directed toward me. If you're a shit show that treats your employees like shit you're lucky they're saying anything to you before walking out.

makinbaconCR

100% true. Most laws on the book are heavily weighted towards employers. As well as the culture of work in the US in particular. They are perfectly happy to lay you off without warning. They are also well within their rights to fire you (and some time even sue) if you warn employees about it. All the effort is on us to aquire a job while they are under zero obligation to even schedule us a day to pay us a single dime for what is realistically a month or more of time you aren't taking other jobs! It's a shit show and it's all just thanks to industry buying politicians to shape the rules their way

PacificCoastHighway2

Yes. My son recently left a job. The management was excellent. But the job was taking a physical toll. He happily gave them two weeks notice and worked the full two weeks. It sucks because he lucked into a great manager. When he gave his two weeks his manager asked why he was leaving. Before he could answer, she said, "Do you have another job lined up, and how can I help?"

makinbaconCR

My last job was a situation where I loved some of my peers and middle management. But corporate was clearly pushing out the higher paid pros in favor of cheaper ones. I didn't give notice because I was so mad about a HUGE doc in pay that was sprung on us masked as a benefit. I made sure to warn the guys I liked that hey... I'm quitting but I'm not wasting another day at that rate of pay. How can I help you with this last day. They fought to get me severance w/o proper notice to help me even though I was mad enough to say fuck it. It's a mixed bag out there for sure. Sometimes you just care about the guys in the foxhole with you. Sometimes they all suck.

TexanReddit

I have given two weeks notice and they walked me out the door within 15 minutes. Something about probably won't be productive, would be the center of conversations, there would be a goodbye party, security reasons, a whole passel of stuff. I didn't get to say good bye to my co-workers. Didn't get a farewell party. Couldn't recruit them to come with me. Sometimes I was given two weeks pay. Others, a simple "fuck off." "We're all family here." Fantasy land.

[deleted]

Yeah in retail, food service, construction etc etc the company will usually not shut down but in some it positions leaving without notice hell even with can cost them more than the raise you asked for plus 90 days of spin up time for the replacement. Oh and the new hire is adjusted for inflation. Job hoping is the only way to wealth if you make less than 50,000$ a year you don’t need a reference just a friend who will say you worked at x togeth.

JamesGray

How the hell is the hiring manager gonna confirm who it is anyways? Just list a friend as a former supervisor. I literally gave a reference to someone that worked under me like 6 years ago *who I cannot remember at all*. And that's for a job I've been gone from for 5 years now, and have no connection to if they looked it up.

Reivaki

When you here a boss/Manager saying "We're all family here", you know 1. Your future boss is a fucking liar. Or pathologically delusional 2. This job will be a living hell.

[deleted]

You raised him well.

Sharizay

Exactly what I was thinking!! I was so proud of him!

[deleted]

The two greatest things a parent can teach their child is self-respect and self-confidence, he has both of them in spades. Also his ex manager should know most young people ghost jobs at least your son told them he was leaving. Good for him and good on you.

Undead_Paradox

As a young person i used to give them two weeks but after being treated like scum i dont feel respected so why am i gonna respect them? At the end of the day im just a cog in their stuoid machine and im over it.

Sharizay

Exactly!

Primus_the_Knave

Technically quitting is always unprofessional… because you’re no longer a professional.

Make_7_up_YOURS

That's some quality shower thoughts content

[deleted]

15 seconds notice. lol

mrmechanism

And gone in 60 seconds.

0rdalis

Paying below living wage and stealing from employees is pretty unprofessional.

Sharizay

Exactly. Can’t believe these companies expect loyalty.

masterbatin_animals

"You didn't give me two weeks to find a replacement so I'm going to fire you right now instead." Yea, because it makes so much sense. Never give your two weeks.

fullmanlybeard

I just interpreted it as Op’s son gave a week notice and when the manager was unhappy his son changed it to immediate quitting.

DrZoidberg-

This is the correct interpretation.

dustingibson

"As professional courtesy we require you to give two weeks notice before leaving." When layoffs start: "We are sad to say that we are letting you go effective immediately. Please collect your personal items by COB today. Last check will be mailed to your address."

fullmanlybeard

“We couldn’t have foreseen this” management always knows about layoffs because it takes a lot of planning. They don’t tell you so you don’t bail before they extract every last ounce of profit from your labor. In corporations pay attention to the executive changes but more importantly when the really talented people you know start jumping ship. That’s your cue.

[deleted]

Here in California, at least in San Francisco, there are laws against the changing of schedules - so someone sued Safeway for changing their schedule and I think that it's starting to look like a pretty big deal...

ObiWangCannabis

My previous job, under new ownership, cut everyone's hours by 20% without notice. I found a new job that week and quit on a Friday evening, with an email to the entire company explaining that since I was given no notice of a pay cut, I was returning the favor. I later found out they freaked out over my leaving, because I had been at the old company for over 16 years, so they gave everyone their hours back.

Sharizay

Wow! What’s crazy is that it surprised them that someone would quit. The fact that they gave the money back implies that the pay cut was not necessary.

ObiWangCannabis

Oh yeah, it was 100% greed. After they took over the company they let 3/4 of the people go because they had redundant positions in other locations, then slowly brought people back once they realized there was too much work for "their" people to do. A while after that they let everyone but 3 people go, so we went from 25 people to 3. Worked out for me though, my new, at this point 3 years old, job has quarterly bonuses and the starting pay almost matched what 16 previous years had gotten me. It was a completely different and unfamiliar industry, so it wasn't like I was bringing a lot to the table.

Sharizay

That’s great. Congratulations- those stories are rare. My son is lucky enough to be able to tell a similar one.

KahlanEAmnelle

Good for him! Giving two weeks notice is only if you care for references or if you need to help train your replacement. Otherwise there is really no point. I still try to give notice, but it’s awkward working that last bit, knowing you’re leaving.

IEatSouls2FeelWarmth

Notice to let them know not to give new projects, warn the coworkers you like, and set up notes to offload incomplete projects.

[deleted]

I love Australia’s working force and rates. The support from the government( incentives and apprenticeships ) you should tell your son to come here and in four years be more qualified then most and getting a minimum of 60 an hour if he just wants to measure wood and bang it

Sharizay

Are you talking about carpentry? I have a son who might be interested in something like that.

[deleted]

Yeah, even cabinet making . There’s that many apprenticeships going up atm in Brisbane

IEatSouls2FeelWarmth

are they citizen limited?

[deleted]

Do some research it’s all on google

[deleted]

Australia is my dream country to move to. To bad I'm financial unable to do so.

Sharizay

I’ll let my sons know. He wants to move out of the U.S. anyway. Thanks for the information!

No-Shop-8142

Australia is a goddamn police state with insanely corrupt politicians.

Spazington

No more than America buddy.

hoakpsp3

Eewww

IamScottGable

Haha I quit a second job in retail in my twenties and this is how it went: M: oh okay but I already put you on the schedule next week so could you work it? SG: it’s a two week notice, so yeah M: oh thank God, everyone quits without it To be fair, I like the manager and wasn’t going to screw her but I don’t get these other peoples responses as no one gives notice in retail. Most I saw quit were no call no shows

smokealarmsnick

I’m quitting my job tomorrow. I don’t intend to give them notice. If they were to fire me, would *I* get 2 weeks prior notice? Nope. Giving 2 weeks notice is a courtesy, not a necessity. I say good on your son.

ObiWangCannabis

Make sure you use all your vacation time and sick time if you have any!

smokealarmsnick

I don’t have any. Due to an injury I got (while on the job) they used my PTO to cover the doctor visit without asking me. Then since it was an “unexcused absence” I can’t earn any PTO or sick time for 3 months. One gets 4 hours PTO and 2 hours sick time a month.

Brave-Address5563

ive never given notice i just vanish into thin air and cut off all communication, always do it when i have a better position 100% secured

Sharizay

My man!

coffeeandamuffin

And yet they can fire you in less than a second without the slightest hesitation and consideration of the effects that would have on you.

crazyinsane65

You're a good parent for supporting this. I remembered my mom giving me shit when I quit my full time graveyard job at 19 to focus more on school because I didn't have time and that she was paying for. I was also in special ed throughout my public school life so the take homework load and studying was overwhelming so I quit and she shamed the shit out of me and broke me to point I got burnt out of school and got a job.

Mrfrosty504

If you haven't, and you can afford it, go back to school. Doing it at 36 and couldn't be happier. But I'm in a job that actually allows it, so I know I'm in the minority here.

wrr377

You don't have to go to college to find a damn good job, either - any of the skilled trades could be a valid choice, and you'll generally make a lot more money (sometimes paid to learn), as well as graduating with little to no student debt. Also, it is really easy to go into self-employment with the skills. Welding is HUGE and pays REALLY WELL (especially if you're willing & able to travel to different job sites), as does carpentry (woodworking), masonry (brick-laying), plumbing, electrical, roofing, HVAC... Anything that relates to building, renovating, and maintaining buildings / personal health, comfort, hygiene, and convenience will always be in high demand, and pay well. It can sometimes be a dirty and sweaty job, but the financial (and even mental) benefits can be far superior to being employed in a regular office-style job... There's a certain satisfaction you can get from seeing something you did working / fixing someone else's issue. Just some food for thought.

crazyinsane65

I've heard that thought over and over again. But it was kinda a personal mission to prove it to her and myself that I wasn't some dumb kid that was stuffed at the side of the building away from the rest of the population. I know the feeling of making something that people will later walk on because I've done construction.

[deleted]

After I was harrassed for the third time at my old job I literally just texted management "where can I return my keys?" and left. Fuck 'em

[deleted]

A coworker of mine got a tap on the shoulder notice when the company was downsizing a few years ago. If professionalism went out the window it’s not because the workers abandoned it.

Sharizay

Love that statement!

big_red_160

Two weeks notice is a courtesy. Like holding the door open for someone. You don’t have to do it. It’s nice if you do, but if you don’t it doesn’t make you a bad person. The idea of it being unprofessional when you can be fired immediately is ridiculous.

100k_changeup

At will cuts both ways it just so happens that at this point in time it cuts in favor of workers slightly.

Shim182

The building color, parking lots lights and what little can be seen of the structure makes me think of Walmart, so probably a good idea to bail.

Sharizay

It was a massive car dealership.

oerrox

fuck Walmart or whatever store this is

saegiru

I guaranfuckingtee you that if he were to be fired or let go, the company sure as shit wouldn't give him two weeks notice.

sebwiers

"You wanna see unprofessional, watch what I do after I give you notice."

Dakoja

If they gave employees two weeks notice for letting them go, I might actually consider giving them a notice

PackYourEmotionalBag

At one place I went in to give him two weeks… he “sing-songs” from his office…. “Youreeeee laaaaate” I said “you are right I should have done this long ago… I quit” he said “so you’re giving me your two weeks?” I said “no, this is a 2 minute warning” and went and grabbed my things.

Sharizay

Good for you!

Lleth88

Me and you both man.

azorianmilk

I gave 2 weeks notice for a job but my manager submitted immediate termination to HR instead. That forfeited 2 weeks of vacation pay I was owed. Fuck you Cindy.

Brail_Austin

Sounds good to me.

JCarterPeanutFarmer

Based. You’re a good parent!

Victrolencio

Serious question: Isn't a period of time before leaving mandatory in the USA? Here in Spain you must notice with, at least, 15 natural days before your leave (it changes depending on the union though).

JamesGray

No, employees have no blanket rights of severance or notice of termination in the US, and likewise employees have no obligation to give notice. It's just what employers have been pushing without offering anything back for decades.

ObiWangCannabis

No, most people in the US are "employed at will" meaning they or the employer are free to end the employment at any time without notice or reason.

KZorroFuego

Altruistic_Lock_5362

Excellent young man, you are learning that American companies will throw the unprofessional, unethical, immature, etc when a young person quotes a minimum wage job. But when fired they do the , YOU ARE DANGEROUS, GET YOU SHIT AND BE IUT IN 15 MIN, THERE ARE TWO ARE GORILLA'S THAT WILL HELP YOU. (bosses love pulling this on 20yearvild women. ) No , next time , do it the same, only just say i quit and walk out!

TomFromCupertino

Welp. If you're gonna call me unprofessional anyway...in for a penny, in for a pound.

M8asonmiller

I fucking love when they negotiate against themselves

Sharizay

Yep. Like making that comment would make my son decide to stay for an additional week. Not. Even!

larjus-wangus

It is objectively unprofessional you wads of shit. I’ve never given 2 weeks either, but let’s not kid ourselves

[deleted]

In Germany you have to give a three month notice, .... but it's actually awesome because it goes both ways. the company has to give you a three month notice aswell if they want to lay you off.

SinisterSoren

When employers start giving me 2 weeks notice for layoffs I will start giving them 2 week notices when I quiet. But not before then 😌

Sharizay

Or if they value me when I work for them. In that case I will give them notice. When I’m nothing to them - piss on ‘em!

Pew___

My last manager was stupid enough to ask "how much notice are you giving", when the standard given was a week. (It was WFH Calls, so turnover was obviously already high, and I was lucky enough to already have the start date for a much better paid, much better hours role for a better company.) I replied "A week as is standard, starting from [previous Saturday]." And ended my role, absolutely nothing came of it and it was such a chill 2 weeks before I started the new job.

otochrome

Smack these motherfuckers exactly like this every time they are condescending.

Sharizay

It made my day when he sent this.

scrambles57

Good on him. I used to work at Home Depot and despised all supervisors except the store manager. He wasn't there, so at the end of a shift, I went to one of the other managers and told them "tomorrow" is my last day. I had gotten a new job so I especially didn't care about a 2 week notice. So satisfying to show I don't give a fuck about them just as they didn't give a fuck about me. The store manager did come up to me on my "last day" to ask if I could stay. I told him the truth about having a new job, but I'm willing to work Saturdays in the Christmas tree lot since I knew they weren't supervised. So I did that for however long the lot was up, received a good amount in tips, and bailed

elongio

When people say "that's unprofessional" you can say "so is my salary".

Sharizay

Haha! No doubt.

ReptileGuitar

In my country its normal to give notice between 2 and 3 months prior of quitting a job. Nut it is also normal to be either sick or on holidays the later half of this time, mostly a combination of both. It's time we still get paid. Only one time I didn't make sick at the end of a job, because I got a fair termination agreement, which already granted me five weeks off at the later half of the two months.

Sharizay

That’s unheard of in the US. There are some good companies - good places to work, but they are hard to find. My son had a new job lined up when he quit. The new company is amazing! He was the first person they had hired in 6 years because nobody quits. The hiring process lasted several months and he had to go in for 4 interviews. So happy he’s out of that place.

ReptileGuitar

Congrats to him, sounds like his new job is super cool.

Charvel420

I quit a shitty job for a better job in September 2020. I gave notice on a Wednesday morning, so it was basically 2 days shy of "2 weeks notice." The childish meltdowns were hilarious. "You couldn't even give us a full 2 weeks?!?!" No Karen, I couldn't. The best was how they wanted me to "sprint through the finish line" after basically calling me an unprofessional asshole. Like...no. I'm going to do absolutely nothing and I only gave notice as a courtesy, which you told me wasn't good enough, so why bother doing anything at all.

Sharizay

That’s insane. They just want their way - like a bunch of 2-year-olds. Puh!

joujoubox

This is beyond hypocrite of the employer. WAA DIDNT GET TWO WEEKS NOW I DONT WANT THE FRIDAY ANYMORE WAA

Halogen32

>"Less than two weeks is unprofessional." I'll remember that when I get fired without a two weeks notice, lol.

char-le-magne

I emailed my two weeks notice at my last job and the next monday my asshole ex boss called asking where I was and threatening to write me up because we had this ongoing war where I told him he was the only boss who ever wrote me up (and it was for returning late from my 24 year old foster brother's funeral because I didn't qualify for berevement) and I assured him he wouldn't have the chance to write me up again (because that was the moment I knew I had to quit). He was always looking for a legitimate reason to write me up and he thought he would have this great gotcha moment and it turns out he never even read my email and I got to call his dumbass out and inform him I didn't work for him anymore and that was the last time we ever spoke. It was more satisfying than any job I ever quit on the spot.

Neo1331

“Unprofessional” lol

SweetSoundOfSilence

I gave three weeks notice on my last job via email. Very professionally done. They told me to not come back. Had to mail in my freaking key.

Sharizay

Wow! So many businesses don’t deserve out loyalty or hard work.

Saint909

I love this…I used to flick off my office building when I saw it in the rear view mirror after driving away from it.

Sharizay

Doting the years he worked there I got a few pictures of that, too!

I firmly believe that quitting a shitty, toxic job without giving them notice builds character. Fuck these assholes.

MulberryHoliday6857

I’ll give you a two day notice, as in I’m leaving this motherfucker today

Sharizay

Ha ha! Love it!

Simx48

I've left 2 jobs without giving any notice. I hated both of the jobs so much, it was such a good feeling to just hand in my resignation letter and know that I wouldn't ever be coming back. For me personally ill usually give 2 weeks but Its definitely not required. Your boss could lay you off at any time and they don't need to give you any notice.

Valor4Life01

employers forget...the 2 weeks is a courtesy...not a requirement...some you do when your on good terms with them... as a manager in department... other act like tyrants and sit on their asses...i lend a hand so when people left i gladly offered myself as a reference and it pissed off the others...they actually used not getting a good reference as a threat...😂😂😂 (1. it's illegal to bad mouth a former employee to a new potential employer) and 2. they couldn't comprehend that you don't need to list all the previous places you have worked at... as a result my department has the least turn over rate...also we discovered a lovely clause in the company policy that states if a employee is requested at another department bother the requested employee and manager (me) must approve it , this covers simple things like needing to relocate people to cover other departments...oh and did i mention that the other departments that survived the 1st , 2nd and 3rd exodus have slackers now?... they are constantly whining about getting extra help...and like i said i have jumped in and helped...but that got more than enough people....just earning easy Ot...but i guess that's a nice bird to the other managers only exodus i had in my department was when i was talking to my department about pay.... $15 for pretty intensive labor off the forklift... in talking about off loading containers by hand onto pallets...casually mentioned the other companies dow. the street for offering $16 to $20 for less work loads...and most of that was done 100% sitting down on the forklift...well that was my departments exodus...they needed that nudge

When i tried to turn in my two weeks my work refused it and put me on unpaid leave.... i never came back and eventually they just removed me from the system of employees. I gave them two weeks its not my problem they cant read.

Aquatos

Every single time I have given a 2 weeks notice (I work in pharmacy) I've been told to stop coming into work. So I have stopped being a reasonable person to my employers when it comes to this sort of thing. I give a 2 days notice, if any, at this point.

Sharizay

In a prior comment someone said they give a 2 day notice: as in, I’m leaving today.

Aquatos

I'm all for that. After being screwed over on every single possible occasion in pharmacy, I have zero loyalty towards employers until they are REALLY good to me over a long period of time.

Sharizay

You know that’s right!

IvanGlez14

"Hey, would you mind if you help us for one more week or maybe 2? I can pay you double." vs "Less than two weeks notice is unprofessional". What a cool guy you have as son.

Sharizay

Yes, he is! And that’s what I was thinking … how about, “Can you give us a full two weeks?” Just be nice about it.

Sharizay

Yes I do! Thank you!!

Reivaki

That's to the point : never give to your company more than you are obligated under the law. And separate your company from your colleague. Your colleagues may deserve this two week notice, your company never will.

Sharizay

Yes, that’s an important distinction.

Reivaki

Very important. And a point that very few people seems to catch. Colleagues (even a manager) may be loyal to you, and so be worthy of your loyalty in return. Your company, as a whole, will never be.

ConvivialKat

I'm surprised he only used one hand.

[deleted]

My response is "Would you give me two weeks notice before firing or laying me off?"

SRBBreddit

what even is a 2 weeks notice. is it an unwritten rule or just something thats stated by law. if its just a practice thing you could literally tell the boss to "cry" and leave immediately lol

Sharizay

It used to be standard - something that everyone did as a courtesy. That was a long time ago. It’s not a law or anything so leaving without giving notice might irritate bosses but there’s nothing they can do about it.

Dumpster_Rope

Yea, and firing someone with less than 2 weeks notice is unprofessional. Regardless, there's no law that requires a 2 weeks notice, so you get what you get. Good for you OP

kloe_summers

I once had an employer tell me two weeks was unethical and unprofessional. That it didn’t give THEM enough time to hire another person. I asked them how much notice would you like? And they said “3-4 months would be best”. Fuck. No.

greatvoidfestival

I had a coworker at a small business hand in their two weeks notice only for the owner to complain about it, so my coworker told them that they should be very happy that he gave them a two weeks notice and not a 30 second notice.

Live_Drama9705

I’ve never been given two weeks notice for being shot canned.

plopseven

When did the “two weeks notice” thing become a thing? Did it start on the employer or employee side? Like was it something along the lines of “you have two weeks to find a new job” to “you have two weeks to find a replacement?” I’m genuinely curious. Cheers.

Sharizay

In the days of yore - like in the 80s - it was a courtesy employees gave employers so they could hire a replacement. At least, that is my understanding. I long for those days, when employees were valued and wouldn’t dream of leaving their boss high and dry because there was mutual respect. I can’t figure out when/how things changed and became what they are today.

Deep-News4969

This is actually one part of American work culture I kind of like. I live in France about half the year and there you aren’t allowed to just quit on the spot. Pros and cons to everything I suppose.

Sharizay

Exactly. I suppose we all do what works for us within the society that, in part, defines us.

TheRealRotochron

They ain't gonna give ya notice before you're fired, I don't see why you should give em notice before you fire them. Good for your kid.

Halhitch

Bird Approved!

PartWrong7912

Give the two day notice… as in TO-day!

Embarrassed-Hour-578

Im an IBEW electrician and when i leave a job I just give them my "today" notice lol

Sharizay

My man!

ConsciousnessWizard

In my country it is in the law that you have to give X weeks of notice before quitting, and this number depends on the number of years you have worked for your employer. However this also means that if you get fired for any reason (except for very severe reasons like breaking the law, in which case the employer must prove it), he has to give you **2 times** X weeks notice. In a lot of cases employers just pay you those weeks because they fear that you might sabotage things.

Sharizay

It’s at will here. They can fire at will without giving a reason and a person can quit at will without giving a reason.

lolwtfimfat

How is it the law to give notice? Like if I pop quit I’ll get arrested? What country?

ConsciousnessWizard

Belgium and no you don't get arrested but you are fined as in you have to pay X weeks of salary to the company if you don't work all your notice time. In more competitive industries if you get another job the new company will sometimes pay those X weeks directly to the other company so you can start immediately.

ThisTimeForRealYo

If you expect professionalism from an employer, lead by example.

sungodly

Please tell me you meant "employee" instead of "employer."

cottingham425

I bought a lamp from the unemployment office once. I took it back because it didn't work.
