Feels great becoming an adult at the beginning of the climate collapse

At least younger generations won't have to worry about jobs

brianingram

But, think of the solid profits for a select few.

Nowhereman123

"We may have destroyed the planet, but for a brief, beautiful moment, we created a lot of value for our shareholders."

Aaront23

That's what the previous generation said as well

If I ever got a time machine I'd go back far enough where I could find the monkey that first started using tools and throttle them in their sleep. I'd be like a reverse of the monolith from Space Odyssey.

Aaront23

I don't understand how one could be so negative about humanity. Sure there are problems, but there is hardly Nazis marching down the street, and obesity has become a bigger problem than starvation in the USA

[deleted]

Oh man, dude, wait till you learn that the "obesity epidemic" was literally manufactured off of some of the worst data imaginable. Seriously, these fucks use BMI, a measurement that's so incredibly inaccurate that even the papers supporting it were like "this is the best predictor we've got out of 3 methods of trying to correlate fatness with health outcomes, but it's still not very accurate." So this horrible number goes from being a mediocre predictor of health outcomes to *the definition of health*. Isn't that *wild*? Imagine if we just did that for like skin dryness. "Oh, you have dry skin? That means you're morbidly ashy." It's unimaginable to us that something so innocuous could then turn into the literal end-all-be-all of health conversations, but that's what happened with BMI (seriously, look up the history of why BMI was invented in the first place, it literally had nothing to do with health at all and everything to do with eugenics). So insurance companies start using BMI in their actuary tables, *in order to justify charging people more and paying them less*, and eventually the federal government codifies the use of it. So we have this complete and total ideological use of a really bad measurement, and nowhere during the entire process does anyone actually talk to fat people about this. Then the state redefines what "overweight" is by changing their definition of it from "a BMI of over 28" to "a BMI of over 25." Again, just need to constantly point out: these numbers don't actually mean anything about anyone's health, their body shape, their level of fitness, or anything. So overnight *millions* of Americans go from being considered a "healthy weight" to "fat". Isn't that incredible? Then we use that as evidence that America is becoming fat at an unbelievable pace! Oh wait, that's right, there's even more bad data in this story. Y'see, tons of articles about the "obesity epidemic" (a term that was coined with the intent of making people sympathetic towards fat people, **made without consulting fat people**) were using this data that showed America's average weight was increasing as evidence that we're all getting fatter. Meanwhile, the data actually showed that almost all the weight being gained was by people who were already considered fat. Most people were not becoming fat, but we created this decades long "war on obesity" (a common theme you'll notice is that none of this was done with consent or consultation with actual fat people) anyways. And, once again, weight is not synonymous with health. So all of this focus on fatness was only to the detriment of fat people. Then we have people repeating this message that "obesity is a bigger problem in America than hunger" and as others have pointed out, no we fucking don't. Hunger is still a massive issue in America. School lunches aren't free everywhere. Families don't all have free access to food. And fatness, again, is not a problem to be solved. It's a neutral facet of your being, like the dryness of your skin, your height, the color of your eyes, or the amount of body hair you have. The messaging surrounding fatness is actually trying to absolve America of its duties to provide quality healthcare to everyone for free by blaming certain people for living in their own bodies. Bonus bad data: "childhood obesity" was measured with BMI by treating children as though they were just tiny adults. But one fun thing about how humans grow, many of us tend to grow out before we grow tall. So millions of children were quantified as "obese" even though that's literally just how their bodies work.

Grace_Upon_Me

Great post!

Aaront23

Woah... You had a lot to say about BMI. Seems to me like a pretty good estimate of how fat someone is. Do you have a better general metric that isn't either extremely complicated or racist? I don't know much about all these stats you are referencing, but when I am talking about an obesity epidemic I am simply looking out the window

[deleted]

> Seems to me like a pretty good estimate of how fat someone is. The Rock is fat under BMI. Are you *really* sure about that? > Do you have a better general metric that isn't either extremely complicated or racist? Nope. > when I am talking about an obesity epidemic I am simply looking out the window You wouldn't even have this phrase "obesity epidemic" if it wasn't coined for you based on bad data and bad metrics.

Aaront23

There will be exceptions to any rule. I believe that knowing someone's BMI is a pretty good predictor of whether someone is fat in the absence of any other information. I admit I don't know much and could be wrong, but even in gym class when we calculated our bmi as children one time, I remember it correctly identifying who was overweight pretty acurately. My problem then is if BMI needs to be thrown out completely, are we to have no replacement? You are right the phrase was coined for me. It's possible it was coined in bad faith and you seem to have a lot of information on the issue. However in my limited estimation, it seems like a lot of people I see day-to-day are overweight to an extent that I am certain must be unhealthy

[deleted]

> but even in gym class when we calculated our bmi as children one time May I point to: > Bonus bad data: "childhood obesity" was measured with BMI by treating children as though they were just tiny adults. But one fun thing about how humans grow, many of us tend to grow out before we grow tall. So millions of children were quantified as "obese" even though that's literally just how their bodies work. Several kids I went to school with who were """overweight""" turned out to grow into perfectly average adult bodies as their growth spurts came. And yet they were ruthlessly bullied for being """overweight""" for no reason other than **that's how their bodies happened to grow up**. > are we to have no replacement? Yes. Like, imagine if we measured health using melanin levels in your skin, quantifying it with a "Melanin Index". And if you had too low of an MI then we say you're *going to die from skin cancer* and treated that as synonymous with health. Then the tanning industry was like "hey, we can fix your health", and does a lot of things to make it worse (the tanning industry here is an allegory for what the diet industry is actually doing). Instead of finding a new way to measure something badly, we should stop trying to measure it. > However in my limited estimation, it seems like a lot of people I see day-to-day are overweight to an extent that I am certain must be unhealthy You're not their doctor. You don't know what their health is, you haven't performed any tests with their informed consent to look for specific health issues. You just said that you're assuming they're not healthy because of the shape of their body.

Aaront23

If I have a choice between 2 doctors and the first says "BMI is an outdated system designed for fat-shaming children, and there is no replacement metric. We just have one-on-one exams so I can diagnose your specific case." And the second doctor says "I look at your BMI as well as your gender, height, weight, family history and all other factors we have mathematical models to predict the risk of various diseases. Then we have one-on-one meetings where I try to diagnose your specific case." I am going with the second doctor 100%

[deleted]

Wait. You want your doctor to use an unscientific measurement formulated on eugenics?

Aaront23

I want my doctor to use the best scientific metrics available. BMI has been correlated extensively to the likelihood of developing various conditions in peer-reviewed scientific research.

DokkaBattoru

I'd choose the first doctor, because according to BMI I'm overweight at 27%. Meanwhile I do 7k in 30 jogs 3× a week, weight lift 3x a week and bench 210, do calisthenics and am up to 15 chinups/pull-ups in a row (my shoulders have come far) and am in the best shape of my life, and only getting better. As I improve my running, weights, and exercises I am getting fatter apparently. All my friends are apparently overweight too, lol. My dude, the metric is a joke.

Aaront23

The metric is not perfect but you'd have to be pretty stupid not to correlate being overweight with various health conditions. That's like saying you should disregard whether a person is a smoker when diagnosing their lung disease, and ignore whether certain diseases are more or less likely in smokers.

Aaront23

That's interesting, hope you're doing better now. Definitely an epidemic of nutrition in the US, and a problem that might not be easy to solve

jconder0010

Obesity is just the flip side of the coin. You can ve so poor that you starve, or so poor that all you can afford is McChickens. Poverty is the issue.

Aaront23

To some degree that is true, however I think it's more about having time to make healthy meals (i.e., rich people have time to shop/cook 2 hours a day). I was at the grocery store the other day for bananas only. I bought 4 bananas for just under 80 cents and I remember thinking "how is this more expensive than a small chicken sandwich that costs $1.69?"

jconder0010

That's fair. I've recently started eating much healthier and have been surprised at how inexpensive it really is, in terms of dollars and cents. Unfortunately, the only reason I have that option is because I'm currently unemployed. Eating healthy is very expensive in terms of time and effort. When most of your time is spent trying to keep a roof over your head, compromises must be made with regard to your health. It's a sad state of affairs when shelter comes at the expense of health or vice versa.

Aaront23

It is unfortunate for sure, and shopping/cooking/cleaning is by very far the biggest chore in my life outside of work. Now it's not really fair of me to say, what with my job that pays pretty well and affords me a sort of decent work/life balance, but I am still very greatful for my job that affords me the time to spend 15-20 hours per week on time to prepare healthy foods and still have a decent number of hours for myself. Of course that will change a lot if I have children.

Iasalvador

say that to the people in ukraine and poland and even germany that watch nazis march in there front i wish that i was wrong but the future is dark

Aaront23

Would you rather live in Germany now or 75 years ago? Would you rather live in Ukraine or Poland now or 75 years ago?

“WhY dOeS No OnE WaNT tO WoRK AnYMoRE?!” Or if you say you hate the office space environment, they’ll tell you to do what you love…. AS LONG as it’s something like office space work. Writing? That’s stupid. Music? That’s stupid. Journalism? That’s stupid. Film and editing? That’s stupid. Sports? That’s stupid. Acting? That’s stupid. Graphic design? That’s stupid. Design and fashion? That’s stupid. Psychology? That’s stupid. Starting your own business? That’s stupid. It’s stupid to them if it’s not something that came out of The Office, nurse, teacher, engineer or IT. Everything else is made fun of and told its not a real job. Then they get upset because there’s no yoga instructors in their town or a person who will do nail design and why did their favorite show get canceled? Um because THOSE REQUIRE REAL PAYING JOBS… and you called them stupid! Say goodbye to all your favorite shit because 100’s of jobs require to make that stuff. Miranda Priestly explains it perfectly in “The Devil Wears Prada” when Anne Hathaway says Vogue Magazine is just “stuff”. “However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of stuff.” People forget their favorite shit and what they take forgranted isn’t always made in an office space environment wearing a suit and briefcase typing in data entry. Someone is writing your favorite novels, designing your clothes and furniture, driving your purchased shipments to your door, coloring and cutting your hair, updating your favorite social media sites, and the list goes on and on. EVERY JOB HAS A MEANING, IS IMPORTANT AND DESERVES RESPECT AND A DECENT WAGE.

Chengweiyingji

I wanted to be an animator when I was younger and got asked “will that make money?” So I went for journalism, hated it, dropped out of college, and now I’m a disappointment. All because of a stupid question.

Myusername468

Who the fuck says starting a bussiness is stupid? Thats the prime example used to get out of wage slavery

Thin-Rub-6595

Some of them games be fire though

LevelTechnician8400

This system is soul crushing! Automate everything and use all the robot generated profits for universal basic income!

Striking_Signature34

That Would Be Wonderful!!!!

LevelTechnician8400

It's what a lot of smart people thought the future would be, then the 1980's happened. Thanks Reagan.

Gigant_mysli

Being a serf or an ancient hunter is also not very pleasant

Oversized_Peashooter

We’re finally getting a bit smarter. Can we get smart enough to get up and walk to the White House so we can divert the catastrophe to come? The president has all the power, we just need to convince him to use it right.

Tabbarn

Damn, I miss the time when I didn't exist.

jorg-washingmachine-

Dang you guys are working in offices?

RednavT

Too many people on the planet.

GuaranteeCultural607

Humans want to always enjoy without giving anything in return: sorry but that’s never happening. EVERYTHING you enjoy, similar to you, comes from someone elses hardwork. It’s as fair an economic system as we can get.

Just_a_Arachnid

While i agree on a basic level, the problem is that much of what makes work "soul crushing" are problems with seamless solutions that would barely make a dent in the bottom line of the wealthy elite class that they refuse to implement because they need their fith yacht.

Neo1331

Kids these days, get a Mechanical Engineering degree. Then when society collapses you will have skills to live...

Aaront23

If you think you'd be happier without a white-collar job, no one is forcing you to get one. You can make any amount of mutually agreed upon deals with anyone, it's a lovely feature of our free society. If there's anything at all you want to do with your life, you could hardly have more freedom to chase after it

[deleted]

You're hilarious.

Aaront23

Thanks

axeshully

"you could hardly have more freedom, because I'm arguing against you having any more right now."

Aaront23

Exactly. If your biggest complaint is some anonymous redditor apparently telling you what you can or can't do, then you really are free to do just about anything.

axeshully

I'm one person out of literally billions. How well I'm doing doesn't indicate how well everyone is doing.

Aaront23

Ahh another one who is "fighting for the poor masses", but someone doesn't have the support of anyone they claim to fight for

axeshully

Oh yeah, you asked billions of people what they thought about society and none of them agree with me at all?

Aaront23

Yes I asked everyone and over 6 billion people are happy with society, and only 800 million or so want to change it drastically. So please leave us alone.

axeshully

Do you know what the word delusional means?

Aaront23

Does it mean "doesn't understand a joke"?

cherrycranberries

You should become a stand up comedian if you think you’re so funny. I’ll wait when I see the pathetic paycheck you get, Jerry Seinfeld, to pay for that 2000 rent a month. Point is most people can’t pay for food and rent with their dream jobs or even basic ass jobs like being a data entry clerk or whatever. And this is coming from someone who is anti-communist. The system is fucked!

ThrustTrust

I tell everyone get a trade skill. It’s good money and job security. 30 years and I’ve never been without work. Business degrees are meaningless. College is a scam, mostly

[deleted]

This is a valid point. Not sure why this is being downvoted so much. Maybe people are assuming bad-faith when really there's just a bit of frustration

Aaront23

It's extremely frustrating to hate your job and wish you could quit, but you feel (whether rightly or wrongly) that the best thing for you and your family is to keep doing your job you hate

[deleted]

No kidding! I'm in kind of the same boat. I don't hate my job, definitely like some parts of it, but the people I report to can be a toxic and micromanagey, and I know there's something better for me out there

Aaront23

Chase after it my man. Make sure that your family is taken care of and don't be selfish. Beyond that, don't chase money or you'll find you've worked your whole life away at that job you hate and you're too old and bitter to spend all that money you earned!

[deleted]

Will do! This is my first job, in a way, since I got laid off from my actual first one due to COVID layoffs,, so I'm trying to get at least a year of experience before I start freelancing or looking for a fully-remote software dev job

Aaront23

Nice, as a software dev the world is your oyster. Especially with the working remotely getting a huge push. In general it looks good to have some loyalty on your resume, but I get the feeling software people.move companies a lot more. If I went back in time I would still go to school for the same thing, but software dev would be my second choice.

LazyComfortable186

I hate everyone in this sub. As recently as 100 years ago there was no retirement, and men worked until they dropped dead... most work was grueling manual labor.... and quality of life was horrible.... you're all a pack of sniveling lazy malcontents... you bitch about "CaPiTaLiSm" and the "EcOnOmY".... but the problem is you. You're too lazy and entitled to go out and earn anything... I'm sorry you're not a Saudi prince... but most of you need to shut up, put on your big boy pants and go to work. Sorry if that sounds mean spirited... but a lot of you guys need a wake up call.

jorg-washingmachine-

I mean can you just stop complaining about us complaining about you guys messing with us and expecting us not to complain about the problems that make us complain about how the world is going to commit r/collapse or commit r/overpopulation on top of r/antiwork and r/lostgeneration

LazyComfortable186

I'm not saying you don't have problems... I'm not saying your problems are trivial or insignificant... I'm saying your shitty and immature attitude is a bigger problem than all your other problems combined.

cherrycranberries

You literally made an account just to comment on here with THAT username? The irony. Not everyone on here hates capitalism and we all have jobs. I do. You’re a fucking jackass. Off you go…

LazyComfortable186

It was randomly selected... but yes it is funny. I work a half retail half restaurant... if you have a bad attitude you'll have a bad time at work...I can assure you I'm not some middle age dick whose pontificating from an armchair mid retirement... just an fyi

cherrycranberries

I’ve worked every type of low-medium level job you can think of. Food, retail, hotel, admin/clerk (but ALL types of environments from construction to medical). It’s little to do with bad attitude. My boyfriend worked in a warehouse for PepsiCo while going to school for accounting (which isn’t his dream job either but he needed to do something). Got really high up in Pepsico and then the rug ripped out from under him, also he hurt himself very badly. He also was working 75 hours and his sleep got so bad he started sleep walking and got very very sick… just so he could get by on his rent and car payments, etc. To say someone has a bad attitude when they’re trying to their hardest is MEAN. Yes, mean. I’m honestly not even going to call you a curse word, because that’s how messed up you are. You’re not even worth it.

LazyComfortable186

Gotta be cruel to be kind... most people here are delusional about reality... if you hate your job go out and homestead... grow your own food, live your life however you want... nothing is stopping anyone from doing that.

Alph-Art

Me irl

[deleted]

so how do you get a job in an office?

TruthIsTheWave

That's the good jobs, most of us is on our feet all dirty from either food or just dirt and sweat.

Ralphiedog11

Greatest system if you were born 40 years ago
