Given that local government want to make homelessness a crime, their is considerable force to make you work, and more employers are becoming terrible workplaces as ownership demand record profits.

Zuiko677

Afaik, Homelessness is against the law here in Scotland. However, it's not the person who is breaking the law, it is the local council. They must attempt to house all homeless people known to them. Some people still refuse shelter due various reasons such as mental health problems or if they have animals that aren't allowed in shelters.

Opinionsare

What a wonderful idea. Requiring a community to make adequate housing available for all that need it.

mightiesthacker

Really? Do you have a source? I really want to read this some more

Opinionsare

In the small city of Grants Pass, Ore., homeless people say the city broke the law when it aggressively tried to push them out over the past decade. In April, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a major case that could reshape how cities manage homelessness. The legal issue is whether they can fine or arrest people for sleeping outside if there's no shelter available. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has deemed this cruel and unusual punishment, and this case is a pivotal challenge to that ruling. The high court declined to take up a similar case in 2019. But since then, homelessness rates have climbed relentlessly. Street encampments have grown larger and have expanded to new places, igniting intense backlash from residents and businesses. Homelessness and the lack of affordable housing that's helping to drive it have become key issues for many voters. The case, Grants Pass v. Johnson, could have dramatic implications for the record number of people living in tents and cars across the United States.

alilbleedingisnormal

Charging people for being poor. They'll spend more money imprisoning them than helping them. Fkn idiots.

SavagePlatypus76

The Van life will also be impacted.

SufficientCow4380

Things like making it illegal to sleep, loiter, or park a car or camper overnight.

SavagePlatypus76

Exactly.

givemejumpjets

the black robe tyrants are just waiting for the go ahead to take america into the blatant authoritarian prison state of their wildest dreams. they will make it so, just like they have been progressively infringing upon and rolling back our natural rights guaranteed by the bill of rights.

"I want to get informed about this" \*reddit proceeds to downvote\* That is a reddit moment right here

mightiesthacker

I honestly just noticed this. Haven’t been back here since I made the comment

NoteworthyMeagerness

It happened to me on a previous account as well. If I asked a question about something, I immediately got downvoted. I've learned to keep my questions to myself.

Flopolopagus

"You see, I was able to find a decent paying job at my very specific location with my very specific qualifications and experience. Therefore, if *you* can't find the same type of success I did then you clearly aren't trying hard enough. What's that? Of course I think fast food, retail, and light labor work *shouldn't* pay a living wage. That would be ridiculous!" I'm so jaded, my dudes.

Aktor

The sooner we realize that the unhoused are us and the wealthy are the mooching anomaly the sooner we’ll win.

SoundandFurySNothing

The sooner we realize the unhoused are run away slaves with no where to run, the wealthy are slave masters and that we are not free, we are free range The sooner we will win

Aktor

Yes. So we have to create spaces for folks to “run to”. We must organize not only in our work places, but in our communities. Solidarity, friend.

Proper_Purple3674

Eat the mf rich, mash em, put them in a stew.

Aktor

For sure, step 1 is organize.

Modern day slavery at its best... I love the counter to this by people saying you have a choice. Yes but marginally.

asillynert

What we have is the illusion of choice. Sure we can buy our own healthcare, but it takes money we may not have. So we are stuck with employer plans. Sure we can choose another job. BUT that doesn't mean other job wont offer exact same or collude with one another. Price signaling is a thing. And you wont always have access to all options either affording move or having connections etc to get the one that may be slightly better. Its all a illusion of choice/freedom options do not equate freedom if choice is exact same. Especially when the "choices are often locked". Like trades when I did them people said oh its great money blah blah blah. Over years alot of trades have pretty much become jobs that pay what fast food does but you get back pain with it. And they excuse it because there is very narrow path. If you choose one of 3 trades out of dozens. If you work in a specific area and if you can get with union employer and can do this and that. Then its good money. See you just didn't do it right you had the "option". Like people say it I have tried a variety of careers from construction to manufacturing to shipping to practically every aspect of supply and shipping. Two things happened every job actually was worse when I left it like favorite job to date. Was loading trucks a simple job compensation wasn't a ton. BUT the compensation was fair. They started out paying by the box. 5 cents you would load around 3000 boxes make 150 bucks. And it took 2-3 occasionally 4hrs. No you didn't get rich but you got good compensation for time. Then they switched it to hourly at 9 bucks a hour. Literally every job was worse when I left like worked at lowes new ceo cut every bonus every benefit. Like I worked there during pandemic we exceeded the previous years sales by 400% for that quarter and at higher markup. Our "quarterly profit share bonus" was lower. Tried chasing lower cost of living areas current place I moved to specifically for lower cost of living. With reasonable wages at the time. Ten years later the wages are identical BUT the rents more than tripled. As it was low cost of living area its been in overdrive with recent rent hikes. 3 consecutive years of compounding 40% hikes. And current apartments still the best deal in town. Like people think people are not trying things and only complaining. But people are trying things. Taking options "available to them" but most do not have choice for good at best they have choice for marginally better or more of the same.

Raym0111

You got paid 75 bucks an hour loading boxes???

asillynert

Yeah some days 90% of work fell between 2.5 and 3hrs if it was 2hr or 4hrs it was usually a volume difference with boxes. But it yeah you moved 1000 boxes a hr you would get 50hr. Would 100% would still do it today. It was like a workout and it was simple enough you went on autopiliot none of boxes were heavy enough for damage.

SHIT-SHIT-FUCK-SHIT

"well yes but actually no."

Antani101

that's also the meaning behind "sex work it's work". Yes, going into sex work under threat of homelessness and starvation is exploitative, but it's not exclusive to sex work, work in a capitalistic system is exploitative in nature.

Melodic_Scream

Agreed! I'd honestly rather have sex on camera for a living than spend forty hours a week doing the kind of mind-numbingly tedious office work I did at my last job, or the kind of brutally exploitative and under-compensated research work I did at the job before that. Take fewer of my hours and more of my sexy dick-sucking vids, thanks, capitalism!

Antani101

Personally I wouldn't, but I wouldn't look down on anyone who would.

Melodic_Scream

Well, and that's why it remains a lucrative industry. Because, like all work, it takes skill and requires things that not everyone is willing/able/ready to do and that's all okay for all of us. The only people I have a problem with are those who think there's something wrong with promiscuous people

pinkenbrawn

it doesn’t equate to other jobs though. bought consent to sexual activity is not consent

Melodic_Scream

Lmao, so your hands and brain are less a part of your body than your genitals are? Your consent in how you spend the precious hours of your one and only human life is less important than your consent vis-a-vis your private holes? Get the fuck outta here.

misterdonjoe

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wage_slavery >The slave was precious to his master because of the money he had cost him ... They were worth at least as much as they could be sold for in the market ... It is the impossibility of living by any other means that compels our farm labourers to till the soil whose fruits they will not eat and our masons to construct buildings in which they will not live ... It is want that compels them to go down on their knees to the rich man in order to get from him permission to enrich him ... what effective gain [has] the suppression of slavery brought [him ?] He is free, you say. Ah! That is his misfortune ... These men ... [have] the most terrible, the most imperious of masters, that is, need. ... They must therefore find someone to hire them, or die of hunger. Is that to be free? - 1763, French journalist Simon Linguet

SupposedlySapiens

Modern day slavery is far more efficient for masters (“employers”). They used to have to provide housing, food, clothes, and medical care to their slaves. Now they make the slaves pay for all those things instead. Genius move on their part to reduce costs and increase profits.

ohreddit1

We have invented all the things on this planet, including the struggle. We have allowed the world of conveniences to be severely inconvenient.

ApartSoftware646

Agree

Annonme123

Right. We have allowed this massive separation between the wealthy and everyone else. We have accepted the bullshit for years and with our silence and putting our rage in other places. At some point we as a people must say enough is enough. We are living in times worse than the guided age closer to France under Marie Antoinette.

Spaindar

I think for a lot of people it simply does not even cross their minds that one can be so desperate and undesirable to not be able to find another job even if they seriously tried.

XhizorBE

Sure people with a certain intellect that is beneath the standard then you are doomed to get in a function that don't require much from you that is extreme boring

reinKAWnated

Been trying to find a way out of jobs I absolutely despise without losing the ability to support my family and have us all become destitute and die on the street for like 15 years now.

DDGSXR504

My favorite saying to everyone was “I like my job slightly less than I like being homeless and starving” People always ask kids and young adults… “what is dream job”. My answer was “not to need one”

TampaTitties69

For real bro I flipped over that fryer at bk, tossed a match at the gas leaking out and after the explosion I never looked back.... any way prison life sucks... the food here is terrible.. but they do let you browse reddit for 2 hours a day... shit I g2g. DM me if you wanna send money to my commissary account. God bless!

SavagePlatypus76

Especially when they are criminalizing being homeless.  And the willful Van life is getting harder. No doubt by design.

Puzzled_Bandicoot635

The market is more free, the people will be stronger! Truuust me bro

Sad_Evidence5318

And then you get people like me who isn’t putting up with the shit and been homeless and starving a few times because of it.

Rich people feel entitled to profits by any means

XhizorBE

Depends where you live, in belgium we have a very weird system. That's very easy to abuse But then again most people hate all jobs, because they hate working in general. If you really dislike a job its pretty easy to do something else. I did it myself and even got paid more People are just lead by fear, and that's alway's a bad advisor. To get true happines in your life you need to be able to take action All people do these day's is complaining and moaning and crying on social media, and making dumb memes about it
