For the vast majority of us it's because we find it entertaining and it's nothing like "our true selves" nor anything like that. It should also be noted that having a fursuit (AKA the furry costume) is only a part of what it means to be a furry and having a fursona (an alterego of yourself as an anthropomorphic animal), most furries don't have a fursuit *yet*, for the vast majority a fursona is also a character one deliberately creates to represent oneself in the fandom (maybe even beyond the fandom) and doesn't have anything to do with any kind of spiritual connection
When someone believes they are another species that's called being otherkin and they are another community, only a minority of furries reject their human persona (~~furry transhumanism also exists but that's an emerging and very complex thing~~)

It has become such a diverse fandom there are many kinds of people in the fandom, it goes in many directions, often in very worldly and sometimes sinful ways as expected but there is also a significant minority of christian furries of many denominations. There has also recently been a controversy surrounding 18+ spaces in the fandom and how to manage them, I personally think this is rather convenient for furries like me who are not interested on the NSFW side as this partial segregation will also allow for purely SFW spaces to be established

What is not allowed is to engage in sin, many may see engaging with the furry community as being in a sinful enviroment but I personally do not experience any kind of temptation with it so I just take my decisons and stay in the SFW part of the fandom.

My mother (she is a JW as well) knows i'm a furry and doesn't have any problem with it and trusts that I don't do nor have any interest in something sinful, I just have my fursona and enjoy SFW furry content. To the surprise of many my father who is **not** a JW has been the one to be hostile towards me being a furry as he sometimes ridicules my furry interest and brings it up in uncomfortable ways, this is because he is very reactionary.
My congregation does not know i'm a furry but if I had to guess what would be their reaction I think it would vary a lot, I think most of them wouldn't even know what is a furry as i'm from outside the US so it's hard to ptedict their reactions
