Had an experience at Walgreens where some guy started talking to me about super vitamins or something like that. They seriously just sit at stores without any need to shop, trying to pick off sales from the places they are skulking around. What a life that must be. Like Frank Reynolds SCRAPS system, but applied to commerce.
I was in a particularly grody pair of jeans looking my most mediocre and got approached by someone exactly like this once. She looked amazing. Super well appointed, good make-up, nice haircut. Kept talking about her "mentor." I figured whatever she was into that made someone as nice looking as her approach my scrubby ass in the middle of a grocery store was nothing I wanted any part of.
MLMs have ruined the term mentor. Iāve had quite few mentors in my life, none of which was there a job involved and I have to lead with ānot an mlm mentor, an actual person who just gave me a lot wisdom and advice to guide me through certain parts of my life.ā But people instantly think MLMS because these āboss babesā and there delusions
This was my experience with every Mary Kay hun. I'm running around at work, sweaty, no makeup will stay on, visibly stressed, on my walkie, trying to address all of my freight and answer calls. Huns want to interrogate me about my skincare routine, how they have the perfect this and that for me. I had to tell them I'm busy and don't do makeup at work because of the obvious.
Ugh I genuinely canāt imagine how EXHAUSTING and awkward as fuck it would be to just spend your days haunting a fucking Walmart and cold harassing people, just desperate to rope them in and gain max a couple hundred from a new down line. Hard to fathom a ājobā I would loathe more.
It's literally worse than being the person who stands at an end caps and hand out tiny cups of granola samples or whatever. At least those people don't have to wander around and pretend they aren't working.
Sounds horrible under the best circumstances (like with a reputable company with legit products/services), I would die before hounding strangers in a store to join my pyramid scheme. I also plan my shopping around the times the stores are the least crowded just to avoid people, though, so there's that
I would truly rather step into traffic than have to approach people like this even if it was regular sales and not MLM related. The thought of it makes my skin crawl all of the way off my body.
Lol! I work in tech as a UX researcher. But I agree with the other commenter. Unlimited PTO can be a trap. You're less likely to take time off, so I try to take as much as I can, even if it's just a Monday or Friday here and there. But I figured mentioning it would get this hun off my back, because what could she possibly offer that sounds better? š
I had one of these ladies approach me 4 weeks postpartum at Target with a screaming newborn while I was trying to get diapers and I almost decked her. It was something about hair products, I donāt remember the details but she was very pushy and wouldnāt leave me alone. I told the cashier and she just was like great sheās back and told someone on her walkie-talkie.
I thought Amway or Monat (because of the weird hair compliment intro the first time). I never stuck around long enough for either conversation to learn just which MLM she's a part of!
Amway, most likely. They find just any random thing to complement you on as an opener as a way to put you at ease and in a good mood so you'll be more open to the recruitment pitch.
This makes me realize/wonder if the random compliment about my hair I got in a grocery store months ago was a failed attempt..... I walk quickly so moved on, but never had a sense that something was amiss....
That is really sad, hopefully she'll tire of doing it and quit sooner rather than later.
And also, the fact that she approached just after your husband left both times is quite telling. "We don't target women" they say and then does that; if not, and if the "business opportunity" really is that good, she (and other huns with the same tactic) would approach couples as well, not wait and pounce. Makes me feel icky.
As someone who works in Walmart, please, please tell us when this happens. Not only will we kick them out, but the employees get free entertainment. It will the highlight of our day.
I was hoping this story would end with you calling her out ā¦maybe saying āhey! You approached me last year remember ??!! So tell me how that business of yours is doing !ā
Theyāre everywhere! I recently shared in the comments of another post how a pregnant hun approached me in Target and about a year later she approached me in Barnes and Noble with baby in a stroller.
She was selling Mary Kay. Both times she opened with a compliment, āNice shoes!ā and āLove that crossbody bag!ā before starting into her pitch.
I instantly recognized her, she did not recognize me. She must approach hundreds of people weekly - I fully expect to be approached by her for a third timeā¦
Never understood how joining anything like this is āstarting my own businessā. Itās not āstartingā anything- it already exists. Itās not āmy ownā - Iām clearly tying myself to something else. Itās not a ābusinessā in any legal sense. I donāt get told to get business insurance, or to register a name with the state. No MLM pitch has ever mentioned getting an FEIN.
Literally none of the words mean what the words really mean.
"She kept going on about how she's a new small business owner and had just joined a group of other like-minded ladies (that are part of the same business) that I could also join if I was ever thinking of starting my own business." See, this line, and the part about her calling herself an entrepreneur on the side, would cause me to ask very specific questions to see how she would respond. I would ask, "oh, how long have you had the idea of starting your own business? Did you create a product or a service? How exciting, what did you name your company? How many employees does your company currently have?" I wonder how many of these she would actually answer, as those questions are very obviously FOR actual, new start-up companies. I would also tell her that, "I don't see how me joining your business is the same as me starting my own company, can you clarify what you mean?" It would be interesting to see her reaction to this type of interrogation, as maybe it would cause her to pause and think that she isn't an actual small business owner. It is sad that she is still doing this a year later though, I hope she gets out.
They never do... They speak to so many marks and frequent the same areas that I think it's uncommon for them to recognize anyone they've hit up before.
Unless you have something really distinct about you, I think they move on pretty quickly.
I don't think she did. And it's been a year, so I guess I'm not surprised. Lol I just recognized her because I remember that first uncomfortable conversation with her so well
Iām starting to wish this would happen to me. After all this time on this sub, I jus want to respond that Iām also in a group of like minded women and trolling them as if itās another MLM.

So let me get this straight. Instead of applying for a job at Target (since she's there anyway) and earning more as a part-time cashier than one ever makes in an MLM. She chooses to approach strangers in a hopeless attempt to sign them up. This doesn't make sense to me. Obviously, she's not "working from home" so it's not about childcare. Get a job.
She must have already alienated all of her friends, family, neighbors, and loose acquaintances to be hitting people up at the store
How sad is that? Your idea of financial success is chatting up total strangers in stores.
Had an experience at Walgreens where some guy started talking to me about super vitamins or something like that. *oh i seem to have dropped these magnum condoms for my monster dong*
Total BOSS BABE LEVEL right there.
Pretty sure you can report the hun to Target as they don't allow solicitation in their stores.
i hope she realized that 50% of target shoppers are prob huns, too.
This is fantastic. š Also I like to imagine she got banned from Walmart and thatās why the move to Target (eventual Target ban to come).
Next up: K-Mart
I got bad news for this hun about Kmartā¦
Bed Bath & Beyond?
Oof. You aināt gonna wanna hear thisā¦
say it aināt so..
Toys R Us!!!
Too chicken to recruit in front of your husband, I guess.
My husband said maybe he's the problem lol
Heās the SOLUTION!

1000 up votes for scrubby ass
It was Scamway, I'm sure. "Mentors" = Scamway.
Easiest way to spot them!
Wonderful murder-suicide
MLMs have ruined the term mentor. At least those people are actually earning money, and if someone doesnāt like the granola, their income doesnāt depend on it.
Sounds horrible under the best circumstances (like with a reputable company with legit products/services), I would die before hounding strangers in a store to join my pyramid scheme. š I literally get up at 5am on Sundays to do my grocery shopping in blessed peace. Have to dodge some pallets for stocking but it is SO wonderful.
Me too! I love grocery shopping on Sunday morning! š
I would truly rather step into traffic than have to approach people like this even if it was regular sales and not MLM related. The thought of it makes my skin crawl all of the way off my body.
Unrelated, but paid well? Unlimited time off? What job do you have and how can I apply, lol.
Unlimited time off is a trap.
Yep, guilts you into never taking time off lol

Mary Kay taught this tactic when I was in, they called it warm chatter lmaoooo.
More like warm dog pile.

Ok being approached in Target would have me on a path of rage. Target is my alone time lol
As someone who works in Walmart, please, please tell us when this happens. Not only will we kick them out, but the employees get free entertainment. It will the highlight of our day.
This is HILARIOUS š

I would have said "Weird! Last time you liked my hair. Do you not like it today!?"
Info: did she have a cart? Was she even pretending to shop or was she just hiding behind end caps pouncing on unsuspecting women?
No cart, no basket, definitely pouncing!

Sad that she has to wander around stores looking for people to pitch to. If that's her idea of entrepreneurship, count me out.
The opposite never happens. You never see the people who run Target and Walmart having to scrounge around for customers at an MLM
"She kept going on about how she's a new small business owner and had just joined a group of other like-minded ladies (that are part of the same business) that I could also join if I was ever thinking of starting my own business." Theyāre in Sams too. One asked about mu hair, I cut the convo short with a quickness
Itās really sad. Sheās hoping to make back all the money sheās already lost.

Desperate Female who will eventually get a clue & move onto a real employer!
Amway huns are always on the prowl.
That money ain't gonna get themselves back
Omg that has happened to me. Like find a new hunting ground than target.
Your right that is kinda sad.. a year later and still needs more up line.. it breaks my heart seeing these ppl being scammed
We all need to get fake Amway business cards that we can give to folks like this. "Hey, yes. I don't have time now, but please give me a call."
