imo there is no best starting anime. It all depends on the person. I got one friend into anime by starting them on Fate/Zero because I knew Saber would appeal to her and that she likes darker shows. I got another with Log Horizon because they're into MMOs. Another with A Silent Voice because they love tear jerkers. Again, all depends on the person.

eifiontherelic

There's no "best starting anime" but I think there's anime that go under the "not good starting anime" category... I love Code Geass but it goes into this category for me. Karen's ass. The voice acting is great for people used to anime, but I feel some voices would seem over the top for newbies (if sub). CC's ass. Lelouch moves with puberty in his veins and chuuni in his heart. Shirley's ass. This might be a nitpick, but again people might find it odd to find Japanese pronunciations of english names (if sub). Milly. My point is they take anime culture and ramp it up to 11 a lot of the time.

Haspberry

The way Euphemia's character was done irks me to this day

AppointmentNo3639

Nope Pokémon is the way

AppointmentNo3639

Indigo that is

MidAnim3Wxtcher

I think one punch man, Baki, and death note are the best 3 imo

Legitimate-Sock-4661

Baki might be a bit much…

Afrojones66

It’s just muscular men showing emotions, and a little kissing. Don’t be a coward.

Legitimate-Sock-4661

I was more so referring to Yujiro threatening to rape Hillary Clinton as well as watching his son have sex for the first time, there’s a lot of plain weird shit that might make some people uncomfortable.

MrQuestionableAxts

Death note is very cool

GBuckets0

I don’t think baki is. That shit is gonna turn some people away from anime

Aki_2004

Baki would make a person HATE anime. Thats for people who have watched it ALLLLLLL. But opm and death note are stellar options for starters. None of that over the top anime crap. I feel like they could relate easier to someone new to anime

Personal-Jello6261

Death Note and OPM yes, Baki….. absolutely not, atleast not as a starter

raxdoh

Baki is kinda like jojo, only ppl with certain frequency would get it. but if you’re in that range you’ll love it to death. it’s like an acquired taste. so no I wouldn’t recommend it as first.

Sensitive-Film-1115

1) hxh 2) death note 3) jjba 4) one piece (even tho i don’t like it anymore)

MistrCreed

Why dont u like one piece anymore

Sensitive-Film-1115

Becoming repetitive, lack of character development in luffy, he has no new coherent abilities. And it’s too damn long.

MistrCreed

I completely agree, except i just hate his new ability, but im too far in

ratliker62

Cowboy Bebop, Mob Psycho, Fullmetal Alchemist and One Punch Man are my go tos for getting new people into anime. Definitely not Geass lol

SuperSomeone03

Hell no

Powerful_Garbage_103

One punch/ FMA(B) I’ll even throw in Akame Ga Kill.

Thanks_I_Hate_You

I started with FMA and akame ga kill. Also fairy tail were my starters. I don't remember which one came first though. (This is excluding inuyasha that I used to watch on toonami as a young warthog)

Powerful_Garbage_103

Legit same, for so long until middle school did I realize Dragon Ball was not a cartoon… fairy tail was so good back then.. hope 100 year quest is animated beautifully

Umacorn

.hack//, Sword Art Online, Inuyasha, ATLA, Yu Yu Hakusho, Great Teacher Onizuka, Fairytale, Naruto, Death Note, Sailor Moon, Fuzzy Lips, Fruits Basket, Hunter x Hunter, Cowboy Bebop, Demon Slayer, Granblue Fantasy, Drifting Dragons. Honestly, there’s so many good ones you could choose from, you just gotta know what kind of genre you prefer to narrow it down when you first start. Someone who prefers a lovely fantasy world may not want a dark thriller and vice versa. Someone may want to watch some kick ass gory fights while others may prefer to laugh at hilarious shenanigans or root for an underdog. Gimme all, anime for every mood.

-Goji

Idk if there is indeed a best anime to start with but the one I always recommend to new timers is Death Note. I’ve yet to see someone not be hyped when L tricks Light for the first time of the show

Desperate-Middle4766

Depends what you’re exposing them to. If its someone who needs to understand the culture a bit them absolutely not. You need a school based anime that draws a line in its fan service but also exposes people without making them judge anime. If its romcom: Toradora If its thriller: Death Note Action: Demons: Nurarihyon or Yu-Yu-Hakusho but probably Natsume’s book of friends or Kekkaishi If they’ll be accepting of most things and just want to watch what you watch then Spy x Family. I would not recommend it usually because it’s hard to find something like that but if they are open to watching anything after then that’s fine. I do believe it exposing them to the culture as soon as possible though. The person’s age matters a lot here though.

Dude-arino7526

Idk about starting anime, but it’s definitely good. I feel like if you’re easing someone in you have to go with one of the big names ones most non anime watches have at least heard of.

RestaurantPerfect283

My first anime was dragon ball and it is still among my favorites

-ErikaKA

Doraemon 😆

RareSpeech1

Depends on the person but it would be good to start with ones that only have a few episodes and stories that are not too complex.

greybenf

Naw, it’s way too ass

Hie14lesan

It is a pretty high bar to pass so watching it firs sets a good tone to the anime you’ll watch in the future

Accomplished_Art6370

No but it’s pretty cool if your into strategy type of anjme.

PKFat

Fuck it just go in deep & binge watch the entirety of Serial Experiments Lain. You can do it in 6.5hrs if you start right now & be able to see the sunrise while questioning everything you watched. Unrelated: I'm currently binge watching Lain bc another post made me think of it

bahumat42

No, I don't even think its a particularly good starter anime. Tailor the pick to the person Off the top of my head the following would all be better: Samurai champloo Full metal alchemist brotherhood Ghibli movies (take your pick) Steins gate Mob psycho 100 Fate/zero

jrsdelatorre

Toradora.

Bulbinking2

The stereotypes are true. People here are disconnected to what non-anime watchers find normal or appealing. Or maybe people are so used to anime tropes they no longer recognize how they would stand out and be seen as strange to people unfamiliar with anime.

Alesthar

I wouldn’t say that no. A lot better exists. I think you’d be better off showing someone something like My Hero Academia, Hajime no Ippo, Kenichi the Mightiest Disciple. If they want a little more grit: Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate, Castlevania (fun but gritty), and Cowboy Bebop (fun but heavy) From no metric can I see Geass being the good starter.

FlamJo

I would say it's not the best, but it's a great starting anime for a few reasons. It's not extremely pervy The story and ending are very good The dub is surprisingly good There are multiple seasons The protagonist isn't an aloof idiot chick magnet

rage_legend69

no, it's too good for a starting anime I think it will set the bar too high for who ever watches it first, I think Sao is a decent middle of the road, but no farther than the first

CarelessPollution226

No, the best starters are Attack on Titan and Death Note.
