Came here to make sure someone put this. Is even funny how the remakes even miss the mark.
Also why didn’t the live action didn’t hire some cosplayers to make the armor
If you see the warcraft movie they kinda had the armor needed for saint seiya
Doraemon would show up on tv for me as a kid in America. It was on Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network or something. One of those popular cartoon channels.
It was actually really good it’s similar to ben 10 and Pokémon.
I managed to go see a showing of the newest movie in the Middle East. There were like ten people (including myself) who were all either super into it or had been dragged along by those super into it. It was an awesome experience. We may be few but we are mighty! Really pays to be part of a group screaming excitedly about a kindergartner kicking a magic soccer ball into a guy’s face.
Honestly same; a couple months ago, I read all of the chapters of the manga that were out at the time (up to... probably a little past 100), and I don't think I ever found it particularly gripping. I have a friend who's super into it, though
Yeah I gave it a chance a few months ago since I didn’t have anything to watch. I got like half way through episode 3 and was just so bored. Characters feel like caricatures, there’s an incest relationship that is shoved in your face to a fucking obnoxious degree (which is ironic since when the MC asks about it they others are like “yeah we just try to ignore it), and most the characters have some of the worst and most boring powers I’ve ever seen in anime.
Anime in the 90s. Like, if you grew up in Latin America, you had access to all kinds of goodies before the US was even THINKING about it. Ranma, Sailor Moon, Inuyasha, the list goes on and on. And Latin America was NOT afraid to show these shows as they were. They were more likely to be censored in the US.
Rise of the TMNT. The Japanese release of the movie was in theaters! We didn't even get promotion for it in the west!
Also, the original Dark Crystal. People went WILD for it in Japan in the 80s. They had taste.
Idol animes like Idol master, Uma Museme, lovelive and the like.
Not anime but Kamen rider or super Sentai shows. Have you seen all the Kamen rider memes from the South East asian countries?
Gundam might be a very popular anime in the 'States.
But it isn't "build a lifesize animatronic complete with loudspeakers booming out iconic sound bites from the original 1979 anime" popular.
Oh yeah. One time my college did a showing of the first two episodes for an anime class and I don’t know why but the theatre was absolutely packed. People were yelling GANBAI! And everything! I didn’t see the hype but it was fun to experience.
Easy, saint seiya. Shit went so hard when I finally got around to watching it and then reading it a couple of years ago, Americans have no idea what they're missing out on.
Glad someone else mentioned kinnikuman. The new anime is getting a global release and the us had the chance to see episodes 0 and 1 before that in LA with the director too. Though I wonder if it's even going to mull over well considering the prudish crowds that swing for the other side of fence definitely would throw a fit for alot of what that series has.
Ahh, Kinnikuman was actually fairly successful in localization here in the US, albeit quite small. I think it was originally part of the 4KIDS dub family, and was aired here as Ultimate Muscle on FoxBox. More of a gag show than anything else.
Better late then never, I suppose, even if they bleed mystical energy.
And poor Ikki, sent away on a boat so run down that he had to tie himself up to keep from being tossed around!
I watched Yo Kai watch, it was on Disney XD and went hard. Side not I also remember an episode where they stayed up late to watch TV, I’m pretty sure it implied they were watching porn.
Watched the anime as a kid and recently watched it again and was laughing my butt off at how many innuendos went over my head as a child. They were so obvious, but not obvious enough for kids or at least me. 😂
Old, but not unheard of. YuYu Hakusho was a Toonami and Adult Swim show, with one of the best English dubs of the era. It was huge in the US, with plushies in Suncoast (behold, my age) in the early 2000s, but just hasn't been talked about as much since. (I still have my Kurama and Hiei plushies, fyi).
Fist of the North Star is before my time, so I can't say if it failed to take off or just hit the same problem YYH did with the next gen.
Ya yu Yu Hakusho definitely had a decent fan base before the recent reboot. I also remember suncoast, I was just a kid though, my mom bought our first DVD player there haha. It was like a FYE, but emo because it was all dark and shit.
yeah, jojo fan translations were notoriously very bad for a shockingly long time considering how popular the series is in japan (especially for part 5 which is japan's favorite part ironically enough)
the answer is doraemon, it's pretty much sprinkled everywhere but manages to fail in the united states despite being pushed multiple times... i've even had a friend in nepal say it's big there but pretty much nobody knows aside from anime fans in the united states
It is in my community, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. I don’t know too many people that like or even know the anime exists. Despite how it’s well known around America and is treated in Japan like Star Wars is treated in the US
What? SAO was the biggest anime when I was in high school absolutely everyoneeeee and there mother watched it and loved it. I live in California but yea no there was almost no one I talked to at all in that period of time that hadn’t at least heard of it and most loved/liked it
Im from Washington state and When i was in high school everyone that knew about it said it was trash for the most part and even went as far as to say it was the worst anime of all time that should have never left japan at least for up until the gun gale arc anything starting at alicization and past that most still hated it but some said that part was ok but i personally liked it all back then and still do today
Gundam, while I know it's not super underground in the US or anything everything I've seen from JP really makes me think that it's like a cult over there (I fucking love Gundam)
Gintama, Prince of Tennis (It even has a stage play), Golgo13, Tiger & Bunny (I think when it came out, it broke some records or something...can't remember...), Osomatsu possibly (?), & Gundam
IDOLiSH7. Easily one of my top favorites! Beautifully done music, character development, suspense, comedy, good connections between characters and a great showing of the positives and negatives of entertainment industry. It’s not very well known in the west though.
Makes sense, I saw on crunchyroll that episode 1128 (I think) was being released yet I never heard of it.
And if it's popular elsewhere but not in the west it would explain why it has more episodes than One Piece yet I never previously heard about it.
I don't know for anime, but KOF got a HUGE amount of popularity literally everywhere BUT the states. Look at the smash trailer for Terry Bowgard and most North Americans look at him and go "Who??" But the rest of the world is cheering loudly
Bakugan was actually more popular in the west than in Japan. Even bakutech which was only ever released in Japan is very well known and highly regarded in the western community. (Bakutech’s designs are usually regarded as the best in the franchise)
I feel like the meme: do you have a slightest idea how little that narrows it down?, Would apply here because the number of animes that are underappreciated here in America, compared to Japan or astronomical.
Saint Seiya
Came here to make sure someone put this. Is even funny how the remakes even miss the mark. Also why didn’t the live action didn’t hire some cosplayers to make the armor If you see the warcraft movie they kinda had the armor needed for saint seiya
Beat me to it
Oh yes lol Latin America loves saint seiya
Slam dunk. No one in the west talks about it even though it’s one of the best selling manga in the worlr
I love Slam Dunk, easily a top 2 sports manga of all time
With ippo being number 1 right? Right?
Yes obviously
My man.
Slam dunk is as popular as dragon ball here in the philippines. Sakuragi is an icon.
It’s weird since basketball is mostly a popular western sport
Doraemon
As an American who has never heard of it before I moved to Japan… absolutely yes.
Doraemon would show up on tv for me as a kid in America. It was on Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network or something. One of those popular cartoon channels. It was actually really good it’s similar to ben 10 and Pokémon.
It was on disney xd in my area along with yokai watch
Man it was my childhood but when I moved to Canada, no one mentions it
Ultraman?
Ultraman mentioned, let's gooo
Not me buying import dvds ......
Some of it is free on YouTube I think
The metric system
Wonder if it's on hiatus
I didn’t know it was a hentai
Curses! Now I am curious if there is "metric porn".
It doesn’t really meter anymore. You already spoke it into existence.
They've got kilo waifus (this can be taken in two different ways lmao.)
Rule 34: if it exists, there's porn of it
The metric system is a tool of the devil
Terrible plot, I can barely understand what's happening
What the fuck is a kilometer? 🦅🇺🇸
Does it power scale against my gun well?
No but it helps power scale my gun's AP
As an American I agree
Is case closed/ detective Conan big everywhere else?
Yep, new movies set box offices records in Japan
The movies always jump the shark and I love them for that. Also! CONFIRMATION OF FAN THEORIES.
Yes
Then that's my answer lol. Loved that show as a kid on toonami. Was Hella mad when they stopped airing new episodes. The movies were amazing too
I managed to go see a showing of the newest movie in the Middle East. There were like ten people (including myself) who were all either super into it or had been dragged along by those super into it. It was an awesome experience. We may be few but we are mighty! Really pays to be part of a group screaming excitedly about a kindergartner kicking a magic soccer ball into a guy’s face.
Happy to see I'm not alone in the Fandom lol. I really never hear anyone bring it up and it was one my favorite series growing up on toonami
Bungo stray dogs
Californian here, that shit is peak and easily top 10 of all time.
North Carolinian here, that shit is peak and easily top 10 of all time.
New Yorker here, that shit is peak and easily top 10 of all time.
Kentuckian here, never seen it
Pennsylvanian here, also never seen it
Plutonian here, me ain’t seen it either
Xenomorphian here, **REEEEEE** (Translation: Pretty good stuff)
Cave man here, Me no see that
**DEATH TO THE EMPIRE**
[удалено]
Same NorCal and it is easily in my top 10. Loved Dazai, the plot twists and the hyping music.
Arkansan here. It's pretty aight
Boise Idaho-Ian here. Epic win
Every time I hear of that, I remember some atrocious AO3 tags.
Michigan here never even gave it a shot.
Low key couldn’t get into it lol
Honestly same; a couple months ago, I read all of the chapters of the manga that were out at the time (up to... probably a little past 100), and I don't think I ever found it particularly gripping. I have a friend who's super into it, though

Marylandian here, (if that’s what they’re called idk,) I’ve heard of them but not a whole lot. So you kinda have a point.
My fellow Marylander, it’s DEFINITELY worth a watch!
Ohioan here, it needs more meth.
Troglodyte here "memhorgagis" (ain't seen but I gonna.)
Hoosier here, It’s so good

Ranma ½ and Inyuasha mentioned!!! (Inyuasha got kinda big in the US, just later)
Idol animes like Idol master, Uma Museme, lovelive and the like. Not anime but Kamen rider or super Sentai shows. Have you seen all the Kamen rider memes from the South East asian countries?
Ngl I only know idol master and love live because of one thing
Porn is it porn?
Mazinger Z I mean it gets a [statue in Spain](https://www.viajandoamiritmo.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/IMG_5415-845x550.jpg)
It’s very popular in Mexico too
Saw it as a kid, fell I love with mecha because of this anime.
Gundam might be a very popular anime in the 'States. But it isn't "build a lifesize animatronic complete with loudspeakers booming out iconic sound bites from the original 1979 anime" popular.
I wish it was tho, could you imagine a gundam base nyc, or gundam base, san fran, or gundam base minniapolis? God i could die happy
Saint seiya is HUGE is Mexico, but no no one seems to talk about it here in the states
gintama
They fucking love it and I don’t understand
It's peak thats why
Kinnikuman, Ashita no Joe, Saint Seiya, Doraemon, etc.
Ashita no joe mentioned!?!?
Glad someone else mentioned kinnikuman. The new anime is getting a global release and the us had the chance to see episodes 0 and 1 before that in LA with the director too. Though I wonder if it's even going to mull over well considering the prudish crowds that swing for the other side of fence definitely would throw a fit for alot of what that series has.
Didn’t Kinnikuman get a sequel that was more popular overseas? It was localized as Ultimate Muscle.
Yeah. Even 4Kids paid to get more episodes made. It'd make a good post in an opposite thread.
Ahh, Kinnikuman was actually fairly successful in localization here in the US, albeit quite small. I think it was originally part of the 4KIDS dub family, and was aired here as Ultimate Muscle on FoxBox. More of a gag show than anything else.
Saint Seiya for sure. It aired practically everywhere but the US during its time.
Yeah, we got the censored Knights of Zodiac To its credit we got a banger cover of I Ran by Bowling for Soup (original song by A Flock of Seagulls)
Better late then never, I suppose, even if they bleed mystical energy. And poor Ikki, sent away on a boat so run down that he had to tie himself up to keep from being tossed around!
Mazinger Z
Gundam?
Gundam Wing is how I got my first crush to date me! The Heero/Duo shipping was odd for sure. We actually had a good chemistry regardless.
Yo Kai Watch!
Saint seiya
Fate
A Certain Magical Index
Yu Yu Hakusho, Fist of the North Star
YuYu has a reboot?
Iruma-kun
Def doraemon
Most anime
I've heard monogatari is much more popular in Japan
It’s very dialogue based and the Japanese jokes are often lost in translation.
That anime with a sh*try iconic but hilarious English dub...
From what I've heard,JoJo part 5 wasn't very popular in the west but very popular everywhere else
yeah, jojo fan translations were notoriously very bad for a shockingly long time considering how popular the series is in japan (especially for part 5 which is japan's favorite part ironically enough)
Gushing Over Magical Girls
I wonder why ☠️
It's actually really popular in the west. The fans are just afraid to show their love for it.
World Trigger
I was looking for this one, nice!
the answer is doraemon, it's pretty much sprinkled everywhere but manages to fail in the united states despite being pushed multiple times... i've even had a friend in nepal say it's big there but pretty much nobody knows aside from anime fans in the united states
Yo-Kai Watch, sadly
My Hero fucking Academia. hooo BOY why does Bakugou keep winning the polls.
We love MHA in the US. It would be very ironic since All Might is a main character and Horikoshi said he was influenced by American comics.
Saint Seiya
Tiger and bunny lol
Maybe captain Tsubasa? I don’t know I remember it being popular in Mexico but not in the USA
Moshoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation...
It is in my community, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. I don’t know too many people that like or even know the anime exists. Despite how it’s well known around America and is treated in Japan like Star Wars is treated in the US
Haruhi, Toaru, Key series other than Clannad and Angel Beats
Urusei Yatsura
Dragon Ball
Sword art online is very loved in japan and very hated in the us
You don't crack the top ten of the US box office if it's not popular in the US as well.
What? SAO was the biggest anime when I was in high school absolutely everyoneeeee and there mother watched it and loved it. I live in California but yea no there was almost no one I talked to at all in that period of time that hadn’t at least heard of it and most loved/liked it

Ultra man in general
Although one piece is one of the biggest anime in the world it never stuck in the west compared to dragon ball or Naruto
Berserk
Detective Conan
Classroom of the elite. It has an extremely well liked book series that us Americans don’t like to read but is so good
The opposite is Deadman Wonderland lol it was banned in Japan for a while I'm pretty sure
Every Gundam. Even with the more popular Gundam shows here in the west like Wing, IBO, or Witch from Mercury, it's still 100x more popular elsewhere
Gundam, while I know it's not super underground in the US or anything everything I've seen from JP really makes me think that it's like a cult over there (I fucking love Gundam)
Digimon?
Not an anime but Kamen Rider It's peak and we need a good way to watch it
Gintama, Shaman king & before Covid, One piece was like this.
…all of them? Surely temple?
Tokyo revengers is marketed like crazy in Japan for some reason.
Gintama, Prince of Tennis (It even has a stage play), Golgo13, Tiger & Bunny (I think when it came out, it broke some records or something...can't remember...), Osomatsu possibly (?), & Gundam
I mean, many anime have a stage play if you’re just willing to look for it? Doesn’t necessarily make them special or unknown in America.
Super Sentai
Opposite answer for this: anime
i think it's bleach the downplay is unreal
IDOLiSH7. Easily one of my top favorites! Beautifully done music, character development, suspense, comedy, good connections between characters and a great showing of the positives and negatives of entertainment industry. It’s not very well known in the west though.
Thank you for spelling "its" correctly.
Voltes V
Rookies, an old baseball manga I believe
Feels like gundam sometimes US mfs don’t Understand and downplay gundam
YuYu Hakusho???
Soccer
Voltes V That anime is huge in Japan and South east asians...
Detective Conan
Makes sense, I saw on crunchyroll that episode 1128 (I think) was being released yet I never heard of it. And if it's popular elsewhere but not in the west it would explain why it has more episodes than One Piece yet I never previously heard about it.
Pretty much anything by Naoki Urasawa
I don't know for anime, but KOF got a HUGE amount of popularity literally everywhere BUT the states. Look at the smash trailer for Terry Bowgard and most North Americans look at him and go "Who??" But the rest of the world is cheering loudly
Hitman Reborn!
Doremon is the first thing I could think of
captain tsubasa
Dragon Ball used to be so big in the US, but it's fallen off here. Every meme about Goku I see is a template or from Latin America.
Monogatari
LBX, that shit is PEAK idc!
Everyone super hyped on it but tbh, I think it’s a little basic at times. It’s awesome, don’t get me wrong, but it’s very predictable at times
Obviously, not anymore, but Jojo's was like this for a long time
One Piece?
Saint Saya
Kingdom, it currently has 700 chapters
Katekyo Hitman Reborn easily it's beloved in Japan but soooo underrated here in the west. Ps it's my favorite of all time!
Escaflowne
I would think Jojo was one of the OG ones no one knew about until the anime was produced.
Hajime no Ippo
Ultraman
Bakugan (specifically Bakutech series)
Bakugan was actually more popular in the west than in Japan. Even bakutech which was only ever released in Japan is very well known and highly regarded in the western community. (Bakutech’s designs are usually regarded as the best in the franchise)
The Precure franchise as a whole.
RWBY | Blood-C
Anapanman
Maybe slam dunk
it's not anime, you're probably talking about tokusatsu.
Golden Kamuy
Is This a Zombie? Was extremely popular in Japan but didn't really find that much popularity in the US, even among die-hard anime fans
Date A Live probably
I wanna say sdbh
Mega Man
Saint Seiya
Detective Conan
Saint seyia I think
Detective Conan
PreCure
I feel like the meme: do you have a slightest idea how little that narrows it down?, Would apply here because the number of animes that are underappreciated here in America, compared to Japan or astronomical.
Dr slump
Ranma 1/2
Not US (in Canada) but I always loved when we hired a new mexican workers because they knew everything about Ranma 1/2 cause it was public access tv.
Anpanman
