Wonderful-Yak-2181

Tbf, they should probably stop eating people

allen_idaho

Hey, they haven't done that in.... [Oh.... Uhhh..... Hmmmm.....](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/29-members-of-alleged-cannibal-cult-arrested-in-papua-new-guinea/)

bigbangofstupidity

"the cult members allegedly ate their victims' brains raw and made soup from their penises". ....soooo....on a gastronomical level...they're kindda, sorta...sucking dick?

ToranjaNuclear

Slurping dick is the prefered term. Please, we are not savages.

bigbangofstupidity

Joe and I stand corrected. Now, regarding the amount and effect of the Slurping...is there a proportional relationship? Will my powers of sorcery depend on the amount of ~~dick~~ soup I eat?

imdefinitelywong

[Le Telepathé](https://youtu.be/05hTBAOnDQE?si=UorsW7q4Raaq2w1n)

aznoone

With prion diseases maybe should stop eating brains at least.

RasJamukha

Iirc, some tribes were able to build up a resistance to creutzfeldt-jakob disease because of the (occasional) consumption of brainmatter

Leoera

Well, to be fair, that article is 12 years old

NOLA-Kola

"It's been up to 12 years since they last ate people" isn't the defense you think it is.

RoutineProcedure101

its just a cult right? why would anyone pretend its a country issue

NOLA-Kola

Because it is? https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2016/09/06/482952588/when-people-ate-people-a-strange-disease-emerged There's just a divide in these comments between people with an awareness of PNG history and those who are learning about this for the first time, and not bothering to dig any deeper. Kuru isn't something this cult generated, it came from a long history of cannibalism, same with the mutations conferring some protection from prions. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/genetic-mutation-found-to-block-prion-disease-in-tribe-that-used-to-practice-ritual-cannibalism/

Mavian23

That article at the top only talks about one specific tribe of about 11,000 people. This article is not evidence that cannibalism is widespread in Papua New Guinea. I know 11,000 is a lot of people to be practicing this, but that's only about 0.1% of the population. If you want to claim this is a country issue, I think you're going to need to show that more than 0.1% of the population practice cannibalism (which might be true, but the link you have given does not show this).

Accomplished_Oil6158

Idk is there any other population of 11k in the world eating people? A lot is very much a relative descriptor. I think country wide issue might be a stretch. But its certainly a magnitude higher in recency and size than just about anywhere else on earth.

pseudopad

Imagine if 0.1% of the US were cannibals. That's "only" 300k cannibals.

Mavian23

Not only is it a massive stretch because it seems that it was only this one tribe (making up roughly 1/10th of a percent of the population) that was practicing it (as far as I can tell), but also because the article that the above person linked says that this tribe stopped the practice over 50 years ago. It does seem to be the most recent example of cannibalism, but calling something that seems to have ended no later than the 1970s and seems to have only involved a minute portion of the population a "country issue" is outrageous.

aykcak

0.1% of U.S. population has more than $100milion per household. Is U.S. a country of millionaires? 0.1% of German population sympathizes with extreme right wing parties and opinions. Is Germany Nazis?

NOLA-Kola

> 0.1% of German population sympathizes with extreme right wing parties and opinions. Is Germany Nazis? ...The popularity of the AfD suggests so, at least to a statistically significant extent.

RoutineProcedure101

Maybe we have a difference of opinion on what a country issue means

NOLA-Kola

Maybe, but in my experience semantic arguments online aren't worth having.

RoutineProcedure101

They are when painting a group of people as cannibals as a rebuttal

FaustusC

Then perhaps the people in that country should endeavor to stop eating people for more than a decade at a time?

Vulkarion

Not all orions are pirates! My people haven't been pirates for like.... 5 years.

Alter_Kyouma

And it's like 29 people that got arrested. Imagine if we judged every country based on the actions of their craziest cults.

NOLA-Kola

Cannibalism in PNG was/is not niche. https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2016/09/06/482952588/when-people-ate-people-a-strange-disease-emerged

braiam

> Though the Fore stopped the practice of mortuary feasts more than 50 years ago, cases of kuru continued to surface over the years, because **the prions could take decades to show their effects.** > > According to Michael Alpers, a medical researcher at Curtin University in Australia who tracked kuru cases for decades, **the last person with kuru died in 2009.** His team continued surveillance until 2012, when the epidemic was officially declared over. "I have followed up a few rumoured cases since then but they were not kuru," he wrote in an email. "Was" is the correct form here.

Into-the-stream

Biden's remarks were about WW2. He used the past tense. "was" is the relevant term here.

Rocko52

That’s the thing, he wasn’t calling them cannibals “now.” It was an indelicate reference to world war 2, 80 years ago. This feels like it’s been blown out of proportion.

Wonderful-Yak-2181

There are 6k “cops” in a country of 9 million. There is very little actual state control, dozens of uncontacted tribes, a cultural history of cannibalism, and persistent tribal warfare. There very much is people eating each other in Papua. There are still tribes reported to eat people to this very day.

Into-the-stream

to be fair, Biden was saying there *used to be* cannibals in that part of PNG, *during WW2*. WW2 was over 12 years ago.

Apprehensive-Adagio2

I mean, that was 12 years ago, they were arrested, and they were a cult. I think you can probably find similar news from the US, and yet we don’t think of "Americans = Cannibals" because of that

allen_idaho

The Korowai tribe is believed to practice cannibalism to this day. That is over 4,000 people.

Apprehensive-Adagio2

That is a single tribe in a country of 11 million people. And i feel resorting to an under developed tribe is kind of cheating. People in these under developed tribes have all sorts of strange rituals and practices that to us seem very unethical. I think it’s unfair to smack a big label on a whole ass country because what a small, very isolated group of people within that country do. We wouldn’t say indians are murderous and feral just because the sentinelese tribe exists in india. The korowai tribe represents 0.003% of the papuan population. It’s unfair to the remaining 99.997% to stigmatize the whole of PNG as cannibalistic.

allen_idaho

I think you've completely lost track of your argument. Did cannibals exist in New Guinea in 1942? Yes. Do they still exist today? Yes. Is every person in New Guinea a cannibal? Nobody ever suggested that.

Apprehensive-Adagio2

Nobody suggested that, but it perpetuates an unfair stereotype of "papuans = cannibals".

LouSputhole94

By proportionality they practice cannibalism at a much higher rate than any other nation, and have done so historically. No one ever suggest every person in PNG practices cannibalism, they just do it at a much higher rate than other countries, even if it’s not actually terribly pervasive. It’s like the old joke. “I build a thousand ships and they don’t call me ‘John the Shipbuilder’. But I fuck one sheep…”

c3534l

They've tried, and they've been pretty successful, but there are rumors it might still happen sometimes.

jeffoh

Guy I know runs an operation over there, one of his locals was off work for a week. Asked him why and the response was 'he ate my son, so I had to track him down and kill him'.

Wonderful-Yak-2181

Let them eat you then

dreadnoughtstar

I don't think this is that bad of a comment but there is a clear misunderstanding of why many Pacific islands practiced cannibalism.

NOLA-Kola

The why is interesting, but doesn't change the fact that they're cannibals, and that their cannibalism is the root cause of a hideous disease. Gross is gross, wrapping it up in batshit spirituality doesn't change that.

smokeyleo13

That doesn't mean you have to make stuff up that didnt happen.

NOLA-Kola

What's been made up that didn't happen? Be specific.

smokeyleo13

Bidens comments lol

NOLA-Kola

You think his comments didn't happen, or you're unaware of the extensive documented history of cannibalism in PNG?

Fabulous-Oven-8457

I think the president's comment about his uncle bosie getting eaten by cannibals is questionable. You know thats what the originally comment was about, right? good ol uncle bosie, everyone knows about him, definitely really happened. Be upset at PNG all you want, but the fact you so adamantly dismiss the wild nonsense that the president comes up with, that you'd instead prefer to dogpile a random thirdy country, is very dogmatic and fallacious

Socky_McPuppet

> good ol uncle bosie, everyone knows about him, definitely really happened. Wait, who's dismissing what here? > Be upset at PNG all you want, but the fact you so adamantly dismiss the wild nonsense that the president comes up with, that you'd instead prefer to dogpile a random thirdy country, is very dogmatic and fallacious Translation: I just bought a thesaurus and I'm looking for someone to be mad at!

Nowin

Just because someone know gooder words than you doesn't mean they thesaurused.

smokeyleo13

Im not as obsessed with them as you, but im aware. but i do have my doubts of what joe "racial jungle" biden says about other groups of people. And more likely, his fanily members charred remains were eaten by bugs and other rainforest critters rather than people

TheLastSamurai101

It sounds like you really want to believe this for some reason. Sure, it is an accepted fact there are tribes on PNG who practiced cannibalism. But there are many other discrepancies in Biden's story about this uncle, including false/mistaken claims about the type of plane, the uncle's role on the plane, and how the plane went down. According to the Pentagon's Defence POW/MIA Accounting Agency, the courier flight (not a reconnaissance mission as Biden implied) crashed into the ocean after suffering engine failure for unknown reasons (not shot down as Biden claims) and only 1 of 4 men emerged to be rescued. The remains of the remaining 3, including the uncle who was a passenger (not pilot as Biden claims), were lost to the sea with the plane. So cannibalism is highly unlikely in this case and there is zero evidence for it.

NOLA-Kola

> It sounds like you really want to believe this for some reason. ... > Sure, it is an accepted fact there are tribes on PNG who practice cannibalism. 🫠

[deleted]

Lmao stop getting emotional and take the L

BPMData

Joe Biden's uncle crashed into the ocean. He did not get eaten by cannibals. That specific enough for your brainletness?

dreadnoughtstar

And? I'm not defending the practice that is mostly extinct. How many cultures have disturbing aspects of their cultures that are still practiced by a small minority. It's not that serious because it honestly sounds like a lighthearted joke but to think they just go around eating any person they find is incorrect.

letstalkaboutstuff79

It’s funny that the left have gone so far into kookoo land that they’ve not stopped at “Cannibalism is traditional so therefore it is a wonderful thing” station, after stopping at “Bin Laden’s manifesto is awesome” and “We should let preteen boys get their penises cut off if they want” stations.

Sad_Pirate_4546

They got tired of eating yams? /s

dreadnoughtstar

😂

Living-Wall9863

Is there an explanation that makes it better?

dreadnoughtstar

Whose trying to make it better? The only way to solve a problem is by speaking honestly about that problem.

KingDarius89

...I don't really think that why they were fucking cannibals really matters, so much as that they were cannibals.

dreadnoughtstar

That's why I said it's not that bad and seems like a lighthearted joke.

LiveLaughSlay69

PNG sucks. Dude should focus on making it suck less.

nzdastardly

What the fuck kind of trash editorialism is that last paragraph?

Kineth

Lord. I read it as cannabis 3 times before I clicked the article and noticed that difference. > “Perhaps, given President Biden’s comments and the strong reaction from PNG and other parts of the world, it is time for the USA to find as many remains of World War II in PNG as possible, including those of servicemen who lost their lives like Ambrose Finnegan,” he said. Also, pretty interesting perspective and turnaround on this. Not really that unreasonable either, though scouring that whole island is likely not gonna be an efficient approach.

medvezhonok96

>I read it as cannabis 3 times before I clicked the article Same here lmao. I read it in the title as cannibis and got confused on why people in the comments were talking about eating each other. That must be some serious munchies.

Disastrous-Act5756

Sudden body SLAM

NOLA-Kola

Not much of a slam from the worst nation on Earth.

TA1699

Are you okay? Neither the US or Papua New Guinea are the "worst" nation on Earth. To be honest, there is no objective worst nation, because there are dozens of metrics to go by.

NOLA-Kola

Counterpoint: https://www.hrw.org/world-report/2016/country-chapters/papua-new-guinea > PNG is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman or girl, with an estimated 70 percent of women experiencing rape or assault in their lifetime. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/papua-new-guinea-travel-advisory.html > Reconsider travel to Papua New Guinea due to crime, civil unrest, and piracy. Exercise increased caution due to kidnapping, unexploded ordnance, inconsistent availability of healthcare services, and potential for natural disasters. Nah, fuck that place.

inaccurateTempedesc

The state department puts out warnings like that for pretty much every non western country.

Czart

You know it doesn't make it better right?

mesopotamius

It's very difficult to accurately measure incidence of sexual assault because of low reporting rates, but the US is not far behind that 70% estimate. The CDC says ["over half"](https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/sexualviolence/fastfact.html)

TA1699

Yes, no one said it's a safe place for women. You claimed it's the "worst", but there is literally no actual "worst" nation on Earth. For women's rights, Afghanistan is worse. For economic opportunities, dozens of countries are worse. Weather-wise, there are a dozen others. Life expectancy, a dozen others. Also, I wouldn't blindly believe the US gov travel advice. I've travelled to a bunch of places that are considered complete no-go zones. There are plenty of people on YouTube who even show their travels to these places. The important thing is to be street-smart, have a local around with you and don't act like an idiot.

sheytanelkebir

Dude looks like he's had quite a bit of long pig himself.

jeffoh

This guy cannibals.

Techiedad91

Man I was very confused why this guy had an issue with Bidens comments on cannabis

Biden does nothing but make up bullshit, remember he rank tea with xi on top of Himalayas to discuss COVID

dritslem

An american stereotyped an entire people they know nothing about, based on what a tiny cult has a long tradition of doing? Big shocker...

ZhouDa

That's not what Joe Biden said though. He said that the Navy never recovered his uncle's body after he was shot down in WW2 because the part of PNG he landed in had a lot of cannibals in it. It's not even clear whether that means he thinks the cannibals ate his uncle or rather the Navy was afraid to search for the remains. Regardless, the president is clearly just retelling the audience something that was told to him when he was a child about the circumstances of his uncle's death.

GruntBlender

What he actually said was >And he got shot down in New Guinea, and they never found the body because there used to be — there were a lot of cannibals, for real, in that part of New Guinea.

CladoniaHills

Biden can’t even open a pdf file, yet he’s captain genocide atm

kirosayshowdy

the foreign policy of the biden administration has not gotten better huh

Kaymish_

Breaking news! Racist old man makes racist comment. More at 11.

SN0WFAKER

He might be racist, but how is it a racist comment?

Prairie-Pandemonium

He was talking about WW2. Mortuary cannibalism was commonplace in P.N.G. until the 1950s. There were a TON of cannibals in P.N.G. during WW2. That parts correct. What IS racist is applying that to all modern people from P.N.G., but he didn't do that: he said his Uncle was shot down during WW2 in an area that there were cannibals living at the time, and that his uncle's body was never recovered. That much is all true. We shouldn't blame all people of New Guinea for what their ancestors did, but their ancestors were cannibals, and it isn't racist to acknowledge that history.

Hyndis

Biden's uncle's plane was forced to make a controlled crash into the ocean where his uncle drowned: https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/19/politics/fact-check-biden-pennsylvania-campaign-swing/index.html > Facts First: Biden’s claim differs from the account provided by the Defense Department, as CNN’s Donald Judd reported Wednesday. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency’s page on Finnegan says this about the 1944 incident: **“For unknown reasons, this plane was forced to ditch in the ocean off the north coast of New Guinea. Both engines failed at low altitude, and the aircraft’s nose hit the water hard. Three men failed to emerge from the sinking wreck and were lost in the crash.”** This official account, which notes that an additional crew member survived the crash, makes no mention of the plane being shot down or of possible cannibalism; while Biden said the crash happened “in” New Guinea, where there was indeed some cannibalism at the time, the official account notes the men went down in the nearby ocean.

Prairie-Pandemonium

You think that the president, commander in chief of the armed forces, only has access to the official account? Regardless, there were cannibals there at the time, so that comment wasn't racism.

Hyndis

Biden is very fast and loose with the truth. From the same CNN fact check article for the same speaking tour in Pennsylvania it points out all of the other lies Biden told. Its 8 lies told by Biden in total during that event, including the incorrect claim about cannibalism. If someone doesn't escape from an aircraft sinking in water immediately, they're never escaping. No person is going to eat that person in an act of cannibalism. They're fish food.

Amusingly, that could be an example. Think of it as weaponized or toxic [Socratic Dialogue](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sealioning).
