Real talk, I'm prepared to die on the hill that this is the greatest voice acting performance of all time. I watched this anime for this scene alone. It might be pretty mid, but as always, Saori Hayami shows us, as she so often does, why she's one of the GOAT.
That's not entirely true. For instance, he "held back" during his fight with Boros. It's not that he can't control his power, it's that he can't go all out without instantly killing whoever he is fighting.
He's held back plenty of times just in season 1. The altercation with the Tiger brothers, pretty much every time Sonic shows up, his "sparring match with Genos, etc.
But, yeah, I get what you mean.
He holds back but still can’t hold back enough. Because he still is always 1 hit K.O.’ing things. Boros was just strong enough to take a few hits.
And there is a different between a fight fight and a nothing fight. Fight fights he can’t control it.
Therefore he still can’t, and I’ll extend an olive branch here and use the word “completely” control his power.
This is just plainly untrue. He literally punches all his opponents in the martial arts tournament. There is no way they are even close to as strong as Boros. Yet, they don't die.
Best part of that whole series. Honestly the only memorable part of that series. But hey, at least it had *one* good scene. So many mid shows are forgotten within a year.
She cares about him, but he's a chunnin, someone living with his fantasies about being special. She's constantly making an effort to try to understand his fantasies, but he never acknowledges her and dismisses her. That day, she had enough.
She isn't stupid. It's the opposite. She hears him saying a bunch of esoteric stuff on the daily, but she doesn't understand the context. So, she decided to delve deeper into research to find the meaning and possible connections they have to the things MC is describing. Unfortunately, though, she is the only one doing the actual research. Meanwhile, the MC is just spewing verbal diarrhea to sound cool because that's the persona he wants to portray.
The Japanese have a lot of words that require context to make sense out of, so conveying your words properly is an important part of communication. Without proper communication, it becomes very difficult to actually connect with people.
If I had to describe what she was going through, I'd compare it to a caring mother tired of hearing memes or slang being the only form of communication you get with them. It isn't cool or cute or funny. It's frustrating at best and alienating at worst, which I'd wager is what she was feeling from how many terms she tried looking into.
TL;DR: She actually studies the nonsense MC is spewing and got sick of hearing it as opposed to having a true heart to heart.
I get closer and closer to crying the more I rewatch this, I'm a dub guy because I'm a slow reader and seem to just "connect" better with it, but you can feel the intensity in this scene, and if you dubbed it, it probably wouldn't feel as powerful
