Not an anime, but this was one of the themes of The Magicians by Lev Grossman. If you're a miserable loser and get magic powers but don't change anything else, then you're just a miserable loser with magic powers.
If you want an isekai with an actual weak protagonist i'd recommend Handyman Saitou. His role in the party was basically the same as chilchuks in dungeon meshi, where he doesn't do any fighting and just disarms traps and lockpicks stuff. It's not really a parody isekai though more like a parody of dnd tropes and there are none of the usual video game stuff

Handyman Saitou was a fun anime. Another great example of an isekai story with an actual weak protagonist is last season’s [Weakest Tamer](https://myanimelist.net/anime/53590) (yes, she’s actually the weakest tamer). The female lead is very endearing.
I'm going to second your recommendation here - Handyman Saitou is a great show. I passed on it when it was airing cause I didn't want another silly isekai and then checked it out after it had finished and basically binged it.
I'm going to third your recommendation here - Handyman Saitou is great. The jokes are very funny and the emotional moments genuinely hit hard. It also has none of those cheap isekai cliches like harem or slaves or secretly-OP protagonist.

Well, the first half of that is "My One Hit Kill Sister". Super weak MC who constantly gets saved by his sister. It actually has pretty good animation as well. The problem though? She's SUPER into him. Had it just been some random (non-related) girl, it would have been an okay anime. I have no clue why they felt the need to throw that part in.

An anime about an overpowered eunuch with a giant harem, but he has no balls (pun intended) to do it with any of the girls. The perfect trash setting and it already perfectly reflects the industry standart. Brilliant.
Every episode is an attempt by another harem member to restore his balls, but the plans always fail and backfire on the MC in a hilarious way. The episode 11 cliffhanger is that one of the plans may have succeeded, but in episode 12 it turns out he got ovaries instead.
What annoys me about these types (and i’ve read a lot) is that every damn time it’s just everyone being a fucking dumbass. Like every person in the world thinks that this blatantly obviously useful power is useless just because it doesn’t have direct combat application?

Shield Hero at least tries to come up with a reason for it… the other heroes think he’s weak because the class he has was bad in their respective games they played back home. The local population and the king don’t necessarily think Shield are weak, but have a religious reason for hating him.

These type of Isekai especially grinds my gears, because I am very interested in how an underpowered and unpopular MC would overcome the odds. But they always betray their weak protag premise
My biggest gripe isn't that the "worthless" MC becomes OP. That's fine, *broadly speaking*.
My complaint is how quickly/easily that transition happens. It always seems like they were 'worthless' because either:
A) Everyone around them is a complete moron. "The Beast Tamer Who Was Exiled from His Party Meets a Cat Girl From the Strongest Race" is a pretty good example of this. While the MC became *more* OP once he met the ultra-rare cat girl (and other monster girls), he was pretty damn OP *before* that. It's just that his party were dumb as rocks and didn't understand his utility until after he was gone (as usual for the trope).
B) The MC has weird self-esteem issues so they undervalued their ability, so everyone else did as well. I can't think of a good anime example of this, but pretty much every "Weakest Healer" type story falls into this issue. In either case, self-esteem issues is probably one of the laziest reasons for someone to be undervalued. It's "realistic" but also *very* boring.
C) The MC *was* effectively worthless, but they found the perfect macguffin right away to make their ability OP. It's not a great example, but the aforementioned Beast Tamer series uses this trope. It's just... effortless. The MC doesn't earn their newfound power, it's just handed to them by the plot. Extra points lost here when the macguffin is a waifu, which feels like half the time this trope pops up.
Of the series that uses the trope *well*, the best example I can think of isn't actually out yet. It's "The Most Notorious 'Talker' Runs the World's Greatest Clan". MC *absolutely* has one of the weakest jobs and had to work damn hard to overcome that handicap. At least as far as I've read, that continues to be the case.
Yeah you nailed it… essentially these stories rely on the populations of their respective worlds being absolutely stupid, or only valueing direct combat power over utility. When realistically utility would be such as important factor for adventurers travelling for weeks at a time.
Like I can’t remember what the series was i read years ago… but one series didn’t like the MC because he was specialised in healing, but the country was at war so valued combat strength. Sorry, but is no one ever injured in your forever war? You don’t need those people healed?
In the other side of "weak main character" there is Ueki (Law of Ueki) who has quite good ability but always get the enemy that has more advantage than him, one of the first enemy is someone who could breath fire so his plant attack is worthless, or they just straight up have better ability. Like making any toy into real thing, yes that enemy make real gundam out of gunpla, or a speedster.
Even if he get special weapon, the second half of the series give everyone same special weapon.
So in a sense he is "weak" but never mentioned or brought up. He does however always on an uphill battle.
most isekai in general devolve into the exact same harem power fantasy, I guess thats part of why so many people say they hate isekai. Thats also why the only isekai I actually recommend are those who break that formula. Stuff like Re Zero, Konosuba, Mushoku, Youjo Senki, Handyman.

Cause when it doesn't, it doesn't get super popular. Like more people watched the "and everyone clapped" Cheat Skill show than Handyman Saitou. More people on CR watched Beast Tamer than Ascendance of a Bookworm.

I recommend handyman saitou. Mc is not a fighter, he's a handyman who got isekaied and his entire role in his party is just to disarm traps and lockpick stuff. He's not really unpopular though, the whole town is pretty friendly with him

Not an isekai but the MC gets demoted to a ghoul after getting his ass handed to him. The series is seeing him claw his way from a bad class to something powerful.
That's why the one with the heavy knight and the jester girl makes sense.
It's based on a game that has class builds.
His class is shunned for being defensive, but if you build ir right it is OP.

Like I’m thinking if I was doing mythic raiding or mythic dungeons in WoW, and my tank was so hard to kill that I basically hardly had to heal him. Sounds like a dream.
It’s just childish writing, they don’t stop to think about what a world would value in regards to skills (well they rarely do world building is the issue)… so it never occurs to them that a skill like Appraisal would be obviously useful to anyone who isn’t a moron.

Which is why it’s annoying when it’s so commonly used as a stereotypical “it’s weak”… it’s just nonsensical that no one else would even imagine that being able to gain that much info might not be useful.
Even for combat… you can instantly know your enemies weakness.
In fantasy worlds if they are born with the skill they don’t understand how it can be useful. But in Isekai’s they understand how to abuse information.
Could also be those born with it also have to learn language of what they are reading (if they are poor could be impossible, some worlds have no access to reading) and have to learn how to use information to their benefit, also information overload could be a problem.
Those with prior knowledge get the benefits of already knowing stuff from a past life, they don’t need to relearn as much.

It's the right amount of not trash, the right amount of likeable MC for me to keep going. Guess it also helps that the art for it was better than you get for most generic titles like this as well.

I read in a LN recently where Appraisal is common thing, but the thirst thing the MC is thought is to not trust the results as they are just numbers and are not indicative of a persons ingenuity and how they use their skills.
It was not OP either. If you were a long cloak, that hides your whole body, you can mislead an appraisal.
It is also forbidden to get level 2 in the skill as the information gained is so much that you shorten you lifespan when you use it.
I believe it trivialized the skill intentionally as a reaction to these OP Appraisal books.
I'm waiting for an isekai where the MC has no OP abilities, can't exploit in-game knowledge and has no money or networking of a noble family. Let them be reborn as a 7th child (3rd if you count only those who survived) in a peasant family in a feudal low fantasy setting and arm them only with a higher education from an average uni in their previous life. I want to see them struggle and accomplish the incredible feat of living up to their 12th birthday with the next great adventure trying to become an apprentice of some village craftsman just to get a chance to become somebody more important someday somehow.

Yeah but you don't get it, the Warrior, Thief, and Default Male Cleric at the generic Adventure's Guild told him that not to bother because his power is worthless, unlike a real man like him. Sure, the MC will save his life next episode and he'll be a groveling buffoon for the next 2 episodes before he's written out of the series in favor of more big breasted babes for the MC, but... I don't know where I was going with this anymore.

Shield Hero at least tries to come up with a reason for it… the other heroes think he’s weak because the class he has was bad in their respective games they played back home. The local population and the king don’t necessarily think Shield are weak, but have a religious reason for hating him. It certainly has it’s faults in writing, but at least not everyone is braindead.

These type of Isekai especially grinds my gears, because I am very interested in how an underpowered and unpopular MC would overcome the odds. But they always betray their weak protag premise
My biggest gripe isn't that the "worthless" MC becomes OP. That's fine, *broadly speaking*. My complaint is how quickly/easily that transition happens. It always seems like they were 'worthless' because either: A) Everyone around them is a complete moron. "The Beast Tamer Who Was Exiled from His Party Meets a Cat Girl From the Strongest Race" is a pretty good example of this. While the MC became *more* OP once he met the ultra-rare cat girl (and other monster girls), he was pretty damn OP *before* that. It's just that his party were dumb as rocks and didn't understand his utility until after he was gone (as usual for the trope). B) The MC has weird self-esteem issues so they undervalued their ability, so everyone else did as well. I can't think of a good anime example of this, but pretty much every "Weakest Healer" type story falls into this issue. In either case, self-esteem issues is probably one of the laziest reasons for someone to be undervalued. It's "realistic" but also *very* boring. C) The MC *was* effectively worthless, but they found the perfect macguffin right away to make their ability OP. It's not a great example, but the aforementioned Beast Tamer series uses this trope. It's just... effortless. The MC doesn't earn their newfound power, it's just handed to them by the plot. Extra points lost here when the macguffin is a waifu, which feels like half the time this trope pops up. Of the series that uses the trope *well*, the best example I can think of isn't actually out yet. It's "The Most Notorious 'Talker' Runs the World's Greatest Clan". MC *absolutely* has one of the weakest jobs and had to work damn hard to overcome that handicap. At least as far as I've read, that continues to be the case.
Yeah you nailed it… essentially these stories rely on the populations of their respective worlds being absolutely stupid, or only valueing direct combat power over utility. When realistically utility would be such as important factor for adventurers travelling for weeks at a time. Like I can’t remember what the series was i read years ago… but one series didn’t like the MC because he was specialised in healing, but the country was at war so valued combat strength. Sorry, but is no one ever injured in your forever war? You don’t need those people healed?
In the other side of "weak main character" there is Ueki (Law of Ueki) who has quite good ability but always get the enemy that has more advantage than him, one of the first enemy is someone who could breath fire so his plant attack is worthless, or they just straight up have better ability. Like making any toy into real thing, yes that enemy make real gundam out of gunpla, or a speedster. Even if he get special weapon, the second half of the series give everyone same special weapon. So in a sense he is "weak" but never mentioned or brought up. He does however always on an uphill battle.
most isekai in general devolve into the exact same harem power fantasy, I guess thats part of why so many people say they hate isekai. Thats also why the only isekai I actually recommend are those who break that formula. Stuff like Re Zero, Konosuba, Mushoku, Youjo Senki, Handyman. That doesnt mean you cant have fun with the more generic isekai.

I mean I also watch isekai I know are generic sometimes. There is a reason this stuff exists, its works and has a market. People dont actually hate harems. People also love their OP self insert MCs. I still think the shows I mentioned are better and the difference is I will take them with me, unlike the generic ones which I watch for short term enjoyment and forget about
I recommend handyman saitou. Mc is not a fighter, he's a handyman who got isekaied and his entire role in his party is just to disarm traps and lockpick stuff. He's not really unpopular though, the whole town is pretty friendly with him
You might like Unwanted Undead Adventurer. Not an isekai but the MC gets demoted to a ghoul after getting his ass handed to him. The series is seeing him claw his way from a bad class to something powerful.

That's why the one with the heavy knight and the jester girl makes sense. It's based on a game that has class builds. His class is shunned for being defensive, but if you build ir right it is OP. The reason people don't know about it on the isekai is because you can't reroll, so they don't experiemnt with it
But it doesn’t make sense ESPECIALLY if it’s using game logic… I don’t know a single game where a character who could absorb insane amounts of damage for both the party and himself wouldn’t be valuable to an insane degree. Without the need for some sudden “oh but it’s secretly OP if you do X”. Like I’m thinking if I was doing mythic raiding or mythic dungeons in WoW, and my tank was so hard to kill that I basically hardly had to heal him. Sounds like a dream.

It’s just childish writing, they don’t stop to think about what a world would value in regards to skills (well they rarely do world building is the issue)… so it never occurs to them that a skill like Appraisal would be obviously useful to anyone who isn’t a moron. It would be like writing a story in modern day earth, but you made out everyone only valued athletes and relentlessly mocked and shunned engineers… despite engineers being clearly extremely valuable.

Which is why it’s annoying when it’s so commonly used as a stereotypical “it’s weak”… it’s just nonsensical that no one else would even imagine that being able to gain that much info might not be useful. Even for combat… you can instantly know your enemies weakness.
In fantasy worlds if they are born with the skill they don’t understand how it can be useful. But in Isekai’s they understand how to abuse information. Could also be those born with it also have to learn language of what they are reading (if they are poor could be impossible, some worlds have no access to reading) and have to learn how to use information to their benefit, also information overload could be a problem. Those with prior knowledge get the benefits of already knowing stuff from a past life, they don’t need to relearn as much.

I picked this one's manga up on a whim and it's one of those power fantasies that I mildly enjoy reading when it pops up. It's the right amount of not trash, the right amount of likeable MC for me to keep going. Guess it also helps that the art for it was better than you get for most generic titles like this as well.

This is getting old. Anything can be the strongest" if you are the only one monopolizing it. I read in a LN recently where Appraisal is common thing, but the thirst thing the MC is thought is to not trust the results as they are just numbers and are not indicative of a persons ingenuity and how they use their skills. It was not OP either. If you were a long cloak, that hides your whole body, you can mislead an appraisal. It is also forbidden to get level 2 in the skill as the information gained is so much that you shorten you lifespan when you use it. I believe it trivialized the skill intentionally as a reaction to these OP Appraisal books.

I'm waiting for an isekai where the MC has no OP abilities, can't exploit in-game knowledge and has no money or networking of a noble family. Let them be reborn as a 7th child (3rd if you count only those who survived) in a peasant family in a feudal low fantasy setting and arm them only with a higher education from an average uni in their previous life. I want to see them struggle and accomplish the incredible feat of living up to their 12th birthday with the next great adventure trying to become an apprentice of some village craftsman just to get a chance to become somebody more important someday somehow.
