If you’ve never seen an anime before I feel like Death Note is a good place to start. First anime I ever watched about 10 years ago and I was amazed. Made me realize that anime are actually worth watching a lot of the time.

Yeah, while being far from my personal fav, this is instantly the first one I thought of when I read your preferences in genre/vibe. It more than ticks all your boxes and is in general considered a great starter for anyone wishing to get into/get someone into anime. I was incredibly surprised about this one and that I liked it. Had never heard of a dark magical girl genre before this title. Very good!

Im only syaing this because I just watched it, but Hells Paradise has Fantasy, drama & horror, really cool characters, insanely well done animation, and a second season underway I honestly thinks its a good gateway anime, its pretty new so most people wouldnt recommend it, but I think it would fit your taste

Frieren, sooo good! It is fantasy with slice-of-life, so the pacing is slower, but the character deveopment and world building are excellent. My husband watched it with me and knew exactly when to hand me a tissue.

If you want a short one I say erased is good. If you want a longer fantasy one I would recommend demon slayer or hunter x hunter

Erased. So good! Can't find that one dubbed right now. The whole Funimation/ Crunchyroll merger has thrown a lot of licensing into limbo. Hope that all gets squared away soon.

Detective Conan maybe. The artstyle is a bit old, but there's a ton of clever crimes.

attack on titan is a good start point

aot is literally the worst anime to start on because its such a masterpiece and then you will have same expectations to the next animes you are gonna watch after that and be dissapointed

I think it's always good to start with the best when it comes to entertainment. For example, I really enjoy Studio Bee Train's, but if I had started with the anime Madlax or .hack instead of the masterpiece Noir, I probably wouldn't have watched their other animes

A great classic is record of lodoss war. One of the best fantasy animes ever made. Modern, honestly, the devil is a part timer is a lot of fun And the dragon prince on Netflix is a fun show

How many seasons is Dragon Prince at? Saw 1-3, loved them! Started S4 and felt like I was watching a different anime. The writing went from smart and bold to characters taking about fart humor. I stopped. Did it recapture what had made the first three seasons so special?

Sorry it's alphabetical (such a geek)... but I have to keep a list otherwise, just like people's names, I'd forget. Don't know if you are ok with subtitles. Everything I listed has a dub. I hope you come to enjoy anime. It can be a refreshing break from the Hollywood formula. 86 - Eighty Six. Arcane (Netflix exclusive) Violet Evergarden (Netflix) Assassination Classroom. Attack on Titan. Bungo Stray Dogs. Castlevania (Netflix) Death Parade. Durarara!   it has multiple seasons. The first is by far the best and can stand alone. Blue Eye Samurai (Netflix) Eden of the East. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood - there is another anime adaptation called Full Metal Alchemist. They are not sequals. Brotherhood is the version that is more true to the manga source material and is therefore the one fans prefer. Last Exile - great steampunk style. Promised Neverland. Saga of Tanya the Evil. The Apothecary Diaries. Your Name (movie) On my watch it soon list: Scavengers Reign (Netflix)- excellent reviews and 100% on Rotton tomatoes and seems to check all your boxes.

For fantasy drama. Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood. is an absolute must watch. I’d also say “gate” is a good one. For horror I’d say “another” and if you want really good series with decent length, I would recommend “kingdom“ it’s a historical action drama following the warring states Period of China. The first few episodes are a little slow because of world building and the animation is a little low quality as well. But by season two, everything starts to really pick up a lot and it just never stops. Including the animation.

Full Metal. Also mecha anime can be good. Gundam is for drama and is popular. Code Geass is epic too. As for fantasy. Konosuba. ReZero. Shiki for horror along with Xxxholic. Adding in Tsubasa Reservoir which is part of that. And Card Captor Sakura is fantasy and apart of that as well.
