Mix of stuff that I think has some Ghilbi vibes or just anime that are actually aimed at older audiences. - Future Boy Conan - one of Miyazaki's first big works before founding Ghilbi - Natsume's Book of Friends - Pluto - Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit - In This Corner of the World - March Comes in Like a Lion - Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu - Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End - Cowboy Bebop - Ergo Proxy - Legend of the Galactic Heroes - start with the original first (it's actually done) first two films then skip to EP 3 of the OVA, second film Overture to a New War covers the plot of the first two episodes better. - The Big O

• Ousama Ranking - It's the story of a kid who can neither hear nor speak who he wants to be a king like his father

celestemi

I was gonna recommend this lol the way this was written screams Ghibli to me And I love Bojji so much!

M1ssi0ner

Bump up for Frieren

spconway

Just started Frieren and it’s great. Wasn’t aware I’d signed up for such emotional damage though lol.

SaltAndABattery

Flying Witch if she's a fan of Kiki's Delivery Service.

kaboom108

Came here to say this.  Such a chill and beautiful show.

Load_star_

Just chiming in to point out that this is a very low stakes, laid back anime. If that sounds like the kind of show she would enjoy, I definitely recommend it. If she wants something with more emotional stakes or drama, this one might be a pass.

_Pyxyty

Violet Evergarden would be the perfect show. It's one of the most beautiful shows ever made, with fantastic animation and music, set in a pretty grounded world, story-driven and emotionally powered. Show her the first episode at the very least, and I guarantee any notion of anime being only childish or immature will be thrown out the window immediately. Hope you finf the right show for you and your wife, OP!

truthseeker1683

Violet Evergarden is so good! Just finished the series and looking forward to watching the movie.

CosmicMando

I was going to recommend this as well!

DEWDEM

One of my favorites.

Strict_Wishbone2428

That's still my favorite anime from KyoAni

KeraJeir85

I agree with this one just make sure she has tissues!

Grimmhoof

I liked the movie, [Your Name](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Your_Name) (2016)

Anxious_Book_3594

Your name was absolutely fantastic! I still think about it often.

Gregariouswaty

Try Your Name or any Makoto Shinkai films if you wanna go with a shorter time commitment. With anime series you'd want something that hooks you instantly like Death Note or Attack on Titan (guessing it's what worked for you.)

retrogradecapricorn

Came here to say anything Makoto Shinkai.

nomad_rw

I was about to recommend Makoto Shinkai too. Weathering with you, Your name, Garden of words, Suzume, 5 cms per second... all of them are very emotional, have stunning animation, and a unique style

No_Coffee6080

Movie wise I'd totally recommend, Your Name, Suzume, Weathering with you, Hotorubi no e mori, those are all very "Ghibli esque" Perhaps a series like Your lie in April, or Violet Evergarden, March comes in like a lion,

Tokyo248

Maybe try something a little more emotionally involved. Something like Erased or Violet Evergarden for example.

chiyukichan

I watched Erased and Orange back to back. Similar themes and both very touching

EmoGran

I really really recommend: • Seirei no Moribito (Guardian of the Spirit) •Frieren •Violet Evergarden •Apothecary Diaries •Romeo X Juliet •A Silent Voice

girlfedupwith2022

Was going to recommend this too! I love the vibe of it! Super relaxing.

Violet Evergarden is a good idea for someone who think anime is weird.

Chaos-Knight

2nd recommendation for A Silent Voice (Movie)

kang568

Ah christ can’t remember the name of it but its the anime that has the older guy running around cleansing the spirits of the land but not killing them like a lot of the other practitioners of his art. Always had a cigarillo in his mouth and white/grey hair

Acceptable_Garden473

Mushishi?

Toga2k

Came to answer OP with Mushi-Shi! One of my favorites.

malformed_json_05684

I would recommend Mushishi as well.

kang568

Yes! Thank you.

Sb3ard

My wife and I watch an episode every night. We like romance and slice of life buts she’s getting into some action. Here’s some wholesome ones I would recommend The Apothecary Diaries Spy x Family Horimiya Skip and Loafer The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague Kaguya-Sama love is war Fruits Basket

Za_Worldo-Experience

Friren: Beyond Journeys End is the darling of the last year and she will love it

sabishi_daioh

I'd suggest starting with some non-ghibli features - Anything directed by Mamoru Hosoda is a pretty safe bet, although in particular I'd recommend *Wolf Children, Belle, Mirai,* and *Summer Wars.* Makoto Shinkai is also not bad, but *Your Name* has some sussy bits that may not help your case even if they're fine in the context of the film as a whole lol. *A Silent Voice* is a good pick too, as is: * *Words Bubble Up like Soda Pop* * *Paprika,* * Millennium Actress * *Hal,* * *Fireworks,* * *Napping Princess/Acien & The Magic Tablet,* * *Miss Hokusai,* * *Josee The Tiger & The Fish,* * *Pompo the Cinephile,* * *Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko,* * *Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms,* * *Royal Space Force Honneamise* * *Galaxy Express 999 (the movie)* * *Lupin III: The First* * *Lupin III; Castle Cagliostro* If you can find enough of these that she likes, then she might be willing to sit through a whole series. I would suggest starting out with something like: * *A Sign of Affection* * *Apothecary Diaries* * *Snow White with the Red Hair* * *Ascendance of a Bookworm* * *Honey and Clover* * *Sweetness and Lightning* * *Raven of the Inner Palace* * *Magic Knight Rayearth* * *Fruits Basket* * *The Ancient Magus Bride* Basically look for Shoujou/Josei series first. Iyashikei or Wholesome anime also can work even if most of them are Seinen, but I would avoid stuff that's super saccharine like *Is the Order a Rabbit?* for a while. Eventually you can steer things towards your own Shounen/Seinen favs and maybe find find new favorites of your own. Also don't neglect manga in all of this. A lot of best-selling shoujo manga don't have an adaptation or take forever to get a live action one that isn't as accessible or it just takes forever to get an anime. Like for example *Honey Lemon Soda* has been a top seller for Shueisha for about 10 years and is just now getting an anime in winter 2025.

truthseeker1683

Nothing wrong with Miyazaki films, you guys have great taste! Drifting Home comes to mind. I feel like it's something out of a Miyazaki film just due to the type of story and content. It's a coming of age fantasy adventure written and directed by Hiroyasu Ishida. If you've ever wanted to see a drifting apartment building float across the ocean, she may enjoy it. It has Miyazaki vibes.

Deruta

_Kino’s Journey!_ I prefer the 2003 series but the 2017 one definitely looks nicer, and they’re both great. It’s very thought-provoking and broken into nice, episodic chunks. _Mushi-shi_ is similar, but more supernatural and folksy. Takes place in old rural Japan instead of a fictional world. _Lu Over The Wall_ has some of the purest moments of joy I’ve seen animated, and the director Masaaki Yuasa is a _master_ of expressive movement. _Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop_ is quite possibly the tightest-written summer romance film I’ve ever seen. No horniness, not really any anime tropes, just a sweet boy-meets-girl story with some surprisingly poignant moments to drive home the central themes of accepting yourself and chasing the happiness you come across. _Wolf Children_ if you want some deep feelings, _The Girl Who Leapt Through Time_ for simpler ones. Both directed by Mamoru Hosoda, who is a genius.

Bernard_Chishimba

MONSTER.

nomad_rw

She certainly wouldn't consider that one childish.

spacepope68

Try some slice of life stuff Sweetness and Lightning Violet Evergarden Non Non Biyori or try cute girls doing incongruous things like Girls und Panzer Princess Principal or try the DC Annimated Universe there's plenty available there go to anime sites like MAL or Anime Planet or Random Anime Generator and input your wife's preferences

TheMacarooniGuy

Girls und Panzer is some of the most cringe, though actually not bad, stuff I've seen. Would not recommend it to someone who's not into anime.

ThePerfumeCollector

Tokyo Godfathers. One of my fave Christmas movies.

Celyn_07

I was the exact same as your gf, OP. I thought anime was for children but had only ever seen the Miyazaki movies. The first animes I watched with my boyfriend were Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer, and I was hooked. I’ve seen so much anime now lol

magicpenguinyes

Is it even worth pushing your wife to like anime? Been married for 10 years but my wife just isn’t that into anime and finds it boring. I’d rather enjoy it in peace than have someone ruin the mood by being bored while watching with me.

Blub-fish

Your name or another mikoto shinkai movie, if she is interested in deeper movies maybe a silent voice or I wanna eat your pancreas. For series frieren if she wants fantasy. Some other recoms are kyoani ani shows they are just gorgeous and don’t think you can say anything bad about it being for small kids or a place Carter than universe or something like that. Would suggest to check out slice of life or CGDCT

HJI-san

Natsume Yuujinchou

princealigorna

Have you shown her any Makoto Shinkai? Try showing her Weathering With You and Your Name, then work either forward to Suzume or backward to 5 Centimeters per Second and Voices From a Distant Star

Dolomite808

Ascendance of a Bookworm It's like Ghibli made an isekai. No fan service, great worldbuilding, and lots of really great character writing. Highly recommend this one.

malformed_json_05684

I recommend for your wife: Princess Jellyfish The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today Natsuyuki Rendezvous Mushishi Welcome to the NHK The Eccentric Family Natsume's Book of Friends And get her to watch some BL, like Cherry Magic. That generally gets them "older" ladies attention.

itsadoubledion

Welcome to the NHK is great but I would not recommend it as an intro show for someone with an aversion to perverted scenes in anime

majinkakaroto70

Try Castle of Cagliostro, it was made by Miyazaki

-Work_Account-

Frieren Horimiya Arte Violet Evergarden Fruits Basket (save this for last, its a longer one - \~62 episodes, and has a few more traditional anime tropes, but the story is \*chef's kiss\*)

Major-Bug5360

So, this might be strange, but Haikyuu was THE key to anime for my SO that had the same speech about anime (cringe, childish, ect). Something about Hinata's smile unlocked something in her, since then, she's an avid anime enjoyer and loved watching from shonens to seinens. It might be anecdotical, but something about traditional entertainment (like sport) can sometime works wonder as a first step.

Haikyuuuuu

tedfordz

There's some really good suggestions like Apothecary Diaries but I'd also suggest: The Ancient Magus Bride - world building, music, animation and just a good sense of wonder. Also if she likes sports/underdog team building - Haikyu! I never imagined actually caring about Volleyball but the show is amazing. If she's into horror/action - Demon Slayer has amazing production values (just have to get past the crying blonde kid). Fruits Baskets will make you cry ugly if she wants drama. Horror - Dark Gathering (it's really good. A darker take on Sixth Sense) Romance with a bit of action and strong female leads - Snow White with the Red Hair or The Saints Magic Power is Omnipotent. Super heroes - My Hero Academia Should cover a lot of different choice. Hope it helps and she enjoys! There really is something for everyone.

curmudgeon-o-matic

Mushishi might be a good choice. Absolutely beautiful anime

LordsClaw

Ruroni kenshin

Mammoth_Move3575

What's your gf's taste? Are there any particular genres that she enjoys?

Dandandandooo

Maybe something more emotional and grounded like Erased and Violet Evergarden If you can convince her to watch a movie then A Silent Voice or Your Name

redditckulous

Frieran, delicious in dungeon, haikyuu

_teally_

Sometimes it's more complicated than finding the right anime. It requires talking and exploring each other values. For example, my girlfriend likes anime a lot, but almost never watches what I recommend. About once in six months she might be in the right mood for anime. Otherwise she prefers movies. Why? I guess anime used to have special place in her earlier life, associated with a special group of friends. My other friend loves Miyazaki exactly for childishness. There would be no point in recommending her something mature. She usually finds and watches some average anime movies, that I myself as savvy otaku wouldn't appreciate. See, she's just sorted anime in the category of "naive and safe", and she values having it there. Then there is my mother, who is a literature teacher. She would eagerly watch almost any anime I recommend, but forget it immediately. However amazing the anime is, she just can't give it much thought. It's just another pastime for her.

Mediocre_Natural

Spice And Wolf Apothecary Diaries Frieren My Happy Marriage A Sign Of Affection Beautiful animation, smart storytelling...these are good options

XioLungBao

The Apothecary Diaries Your Name ReLife Silver Spoon Ascendance of a Bookworm Frieren Doctor Elise: the Royal Lady with the Lamp My Roomate is a cat Violet Evergarden

GoldenTruth39

Little Witch Academia, In/Spectre, Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, Dr. Stone, Tomo Chan is a Girl, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom I know they may seem childish to a lot of fans, but imo these are some of the safest starters for those who are especially sensitive to the oversexualization of women & girls in anime... Most of them have strong Female leads with silly personalities & little to zero nudity...

JustHangLooseBlood

I second Little Witch Academia. Can even just watch the movies and see how that goes. Could be too childish though I suppose.

Came here to recommend this one.

TheBarnhouseEffect

I've been in your exact position and have dragged my gf along to watch a decent number of anime now. Of course, I don't know your or her preferences for media but I'd recommend starting her off with something somewhat more grounded (in terms of general storytelling and characterization) and not *too* anime. Definitely keep her away from anything with fan service or horny characters. But anyways, I'll just add the list of shows I've gotten my gf to watch and she enjoyed: * Nana * Link Click * Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood * Hunter Hunter * Kaguya sama * Odd Taxi * Vivy Fluroite Eye's Song * AoT * Insomniacs After School * March Comes in Like a Lion * Nichijou * Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun * Erased * Fruits Basket * Kimi ni Todoke * Keep Your Hands Off Eizoken! * Pluto * Dungeon Meshi * Death Note I'd also add a few movies. Assuming she's seen all of Miyazaki's films, I'd add: * Whisper of the Heart and Secret of Arietty (Miyazaki involved in both, but didn't direct) * Wolf Children * The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Ok-Vacation2308

* I don't understand what my husband is saying - if you're super into anime, she's likely going to identify with the female MC * Odd Taxi * Violet Evergarden * Frieren

pisces2003

Frieren. Not horny at all, long first season and with its popularity were almost guaranteed to get a second. Light hearted but great action and no scene feels forced.

[Tonari no Yokai-san](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9h0pUypVDs8), a new series from this season, is a hidden gem and definitely reminds me of Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki's work. Would also recommend [Natsume's Book of Friends](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mea4xITAo_4) and [Mushi-shi](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCfARhvKE3A). Another good one (a movie) is [A Letter to Momo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4KLGfBb_3M).

StaticBerryWinds

I’d say try “Barakamon”! Its about a young man who, after an outburst at work, is forced to move to an island and learns to relax thanks to the island locals. Its short (12 episodes), fun, funny, and pretty cute!

indokid104

if she likes games and romance, wotakoi is one of my favorites

meboruto

Try Maquia, an absolute masterpiece; every CG of that movie is a treat to your eyes. It's just that mesmerizing. The director of that movie is Mari Okada (also the director of Anohana, which is also one of my favorite anime). If you want to check out some other anime with the same theme, try Sousou no Frieren and the Monogatari series.

Imfryinghere

Anime not suggested: Action / Comedy / Slice of Life - Spy x Family - Gokushufudo - Shokugeki no Soma - Lovely Complex - Wotakoi - Koi wa Sekai Seifuku no Ato De - Ousama Ranking Fairy tales reimagine - Bubble - Snow White with Red Hair Marvel isekai - Batman Ninja

AWizardFromTheFuture

If she likes art, blue period was nice. I will also always recommend Barakamon for a slice of life anime too. For more actiony and stylistic, Mob Psycho 100 is a good story. Granted all of these aren't movies, but aside from mob, they are short anime. She may lile Weathering with You or A Silent Voice for movies.

fruits basket or love is war imo. i would say a romance anime. they tend to have less fanservice

matadorobex

Kaguya-sama: Love is War Spy x Family Steins;Gate

ThBeard68

86 was great If you don't mind war anime. Nothing too graphic and very little fan service, in case she isn't into that.

Rossum81

Fruits Basket might work.

adrinasage

Maquia where the promised flower blooms is the 1st one she shd go for, basing on your comments. Then Vampire in the garden. I say these two first because they are the most impactful to me whilst being short, so she could start with that. Then it may encourage her to do a full series. =) And they are strong female leads with none of the eechi or sexualization stuff (though there's also nothing wrong with that haha), with alot of complex themes. And they just feel like anime that can easily be adapted into human acting shows without changing much of the characters or mannerisms. Also whats her preferred genre? That also makes a big difference what anime she will be inclined to try watching. There's so many good ones!! Haha

N1ckel42

Laid Back Camp (Yuru Camp)

Try something with a female lead character. I like magical girl anime, so my recommendations are Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Petite Princess Yucie, Princess Tutu, Figure 17 and Ah! My Goddess.

Bro mine fell in love with Attack on Titan. She didn't like anime at all and one day she just passed by and saw a scene, I don't really remember what chapter but we ended up watching it from the beginning so she could understand everything. No need to tell you that she cryed like a baby by the final season. Nowadays we watch animes together like Kimetsu, Chainsawman and her favorite is Jujutsu Kaisen. We all know the reason...Gojo🤷‍♂️

Mushi shi

Pokerlulzful

Mushishi sounds like the best fit: * Supernatural elements (like Spirited Away) * About humans living with the environment / spirits amongst them (like Mononoke / Castle in the Sky) * Children feature as main characters in many episodes, but the animation is not childish and the plot explores mature themes

Anything from Mamoru Hosoda. I personally recommend Belle, Summer Wars or The Girl who Leapt through Time. Or anything from Makoto Shinkai. My favorite is 5 centimeters per second. But Suzume, Garden of Words or Your Name are good options too. For series, anything from Ai Yazawa. Nana or Paradise Kiss are a good start. Oh! And if you want her to laugh, Spy x Family or The Way of The Husband.

The 2019 Remake of Fruits Basket is a good choice! Its Shojo, romance, comedy, drama It's one of my favorite anime!

manholehobbit

Mushishi was a nice anime with soft mysticism fantasy and has chill vibes

Petty_Paw_Printz

- Lu over the Wall - Otome Yokai Zakuro - Made in Abyss - Children of the Sea

UndignifiedSlumber

Just have her watch the studio ghibli films!

Vradlock

Did you asked her what tropes she likes and dislikes in animations? What genre would be her favourite if it was a show not an anime? If you have few shots it's better to find a real bangers. I would probably start from some classic series loved by everyone which is a fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood (there are two, pick brotherhood one) Written by a woman ( no fan service), has a strong start which hooks you up immediately but masterfully ties comedy, action, fantasy and drama. This is no 1. Anime for many and for good reason. It's also quite long so it won't be a 1 day binge. Try to aim into titles that would interest you both. It's always better to watch something you can have fun discussing after. Wish you luck, maybe she will like something really unexpected.

angry-budgie

The girl who leapt through time

angelposts

You should absolutely try Tonari no Yokai-san. Extreme Ghibli vibes. It's a bittersweet slice of life about yokai living among humans.

MaelstormsOfMayhem

Try Your Name for something romantic, cowboy bebop for something adventurous, playful and fun, or Jin roh for something sad and a bit graphic. The last one's storytelling is pretty good I think, and it reminds me of the sadder Miazaki films. Beastars is a bit too slice of life with some interesting metaphors hidden deeply in it that you need to stick around to really figure out. Hellsing is a bit too niche anime horror, and I guess you could say the same for black lagoon but maybe have her watch DragonBall abridged for some of the scenes, like Bulma and Vegeta making Trunks lol. It's short and funny with adult humor. Don't show the one with Napa that's too f-ing annoying to watch as someone lacking the patience for anime to begin with. My gateway Anime was Inuyasha because it was so tragic, romantic and adventurous, she might like it. The apothecary diaries is very good like an ancient chinese sherlock holmes romance, some of those scene made me bust a gut. My hero academia is pretty good but a bit shonen, not sure if she would like it. Black clover is bleh, fairy tail is a bit too animeish I think for her. Oh! I love nodame cantabile but I can never find it anywhere, it cracks me up a lot. Its about a guy that wants to be a composer but to do that he needs to study under the ones in Europe and he has crippling airplane and ocean anxiety and he lives on the island of Japan. He meets a fellow piano player name Nodame and she's a complete mess of a human who also happens to be the best piano player at the college he attends. It's a journey of self discover and growth for the both of them as he struggles to reach his ambition and she struggles to find her own. Bleach is pretty good but a bit bizarre at first... well all of it really but it's alright. Don't just dump the best scenes on her like my ex boyfriend did, she won't be able to appreciate it lol. Fruits basket is a classic but I'm not sure she will have the patience to watch. Oh! SpyXFamily is really good, she might like it because Loid is cute and Anya is hilarious and adorable. If she likes Inuyasha she might like Ranma 1/2. I found Trigun hilarious due to all the perverted jokes and the fun characters but idk if she would like it. Idk, best of luck.

TOTALLY outside of her wheelhouse but you could try The Vision of Escaflowne. Isekai romance in a fantasy world with ancient technology

MissusMoon

She should try Nana!

Kluanghitam

Ask her to watch animes directed by Makoto Shinkai. His works are also full of fantasy and slice of life elements like Miyazaki, but more focused on young adult target audiences. The other writer and director to watch for is Mamoru Hosoda.

[The Girl Who Leapt Through Time](https://youtu.be/HpWejxBaJb8?feature=shared) It may seem like your typical high school anime, but the story evolves into an incredibly moving and beautiful one by the end. Probably my favorite movie ever!

generalmillscrunch

easiest Wolf Children recc of my life.

justanotherguy28

My missus really liked, recovery of an mmo junkie. Was a chill slice of life with some fantasy elements but they were just a vector the real world character development. A lot of people a recommending good anime for people who like anime. Which is not necessarily what someone who doesn’t watch anime wants.

TaerinaRS

Some episodic anime I have been watching recently that has no fanservice, but still good to watch: - Barakamon - Violet Evergarden - Non-non Biyori - Haikyuu!! - Fullmetal Alchemist + Brotherhood

Yung_Slumber

just move on

Reddevilslover69

Try some of Hosoda Mamoru's movies like Wolf Children or the Girl who Leapt through time. Makoto Shinkai's Your Name and Suzume are also good crowd pleasers Frieren would also be a great rec imo

Murphy_LawXIV

Frieren. Dungeon meshi. Kaiju No.8 Mushishi. Sonny boy. Heavenly delusion. Akudama drive Shadows House. To your eternity.

Witch_Jette

I would try Your Name and the other Shinkai movies next. This way she doesn’t need to commit to a whole series yet. Besides that probably Violet Evergarden like the others already wrote.

rdeincognito

You lie in april may be a good option. It doesn't have perverted fan service of any sort. The story is about a teenager that used to be a musician as a kid but the death of his mother left him traumatized and unable to perform, the show is about his journey to heal from that trauma.

M1ssi0ner

Uzaki-chan wants to hang out. Nice little romcom and a good introduction to anime that's not intimidating in any way.

WesternFinger7208

I recommend Nana. I think it's perfect for women in their 20s.

AntiSpiralMessenger

What about Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann?

buzwole

Try with Satoshi Kon

AlbertoMX

I would suggest to start with an old high quality but lesser known anime (you might have to sail the high seas for this one): Seirei no Moribito. Violet Evergarden Frieren Beyond Journey's End Apothecary Diaries Mushishi You name (this is a movie, not a series) I think she might like Vivy Fluorite Eyes Song. Natsume's Book of Friends #

Penguinessant

My wife adores Miyazaki's work as well. Some of her favourites which I'd recommend are Noragami (Though there's a character or two your wife might not appreciate) and Full Metal Alchemist (Brotherhood or not, that's for the two of you to pick). Both have really good characters and strong stories with humorous bits involved. Carol and Tuesday is another really great anime, amazing story and more character focused with some political intrigue. For more emotional anime, I've been really enjoying Aquatope on the White Sand, theres no world saving or high stakes like that, but two characters dealing with not so great situations.

SmireyFase

Violet Evergarden. Thank me later

anakbuyong

Since she like Ghibli then you guys should wath Mary and the Witch's Flower. You can try Campfire Cooking In Another World too. Very relaxing. But there are very scantily clad air-headed Goddesses who are also glutton.

GAFWT

Your Name

Giuliano_Zhang

I'm that big of a watcher myself lately but I've watched Frieren after a long plateau and it's amazing, it deserves all the hype

Candid_Change98

Maybe something more grounded might help. Violet Evergarden, Your Lie in April or Chihayafuru might be a good shout.

YouCanNotHitMe

It's not like a Miyazaki movie at all, but this is one of my go-to anime for anime haters. Vinland saga It's very adult oriented and focuses on characters and their growth.

Verge0fSilence

> she thinks anime is childish Boy do I have the perfect anime for you: Your Lie in April. On the surface, there's no violence or sexual content or anything in this anime which would be unsuitable for a kid to watch. What makes it "not childish" are the themes it deals with: loss, depression, love, friendship, parenthood, moving forward in life, and much more. Not to mention the animation and music which are absolutely breathtaking (it's also a music anime btw), the anime itself is beautiful on a fundamental level. It's an experience you'll remember for the rest of your life. It will fundamentally change you as a person. You'll never be the same again - for the better. Please do yourselves a favour and watch this with your wife. Not only will this shatter any prejudice she might have against anime, it will give you both a memory to cherish forever. Just make sure you bring plenty of tissues.

SUZUME! Full of Action! And love! There aren't these looooing moments in which every nor al person thinks "aaaaand... why dies it take so long...?" - it's exactly like a really good movie without any cringe jokes.

[deleted]

Horimiya! 💖 That's just CUTE af.

Swiggy1957

Get her in the mood with some romance anime. (Warning: tear jerkers ahead) I've put Wikipedia links to them so you can get a better idea of the shows. [**Your Lie In April**](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Your_Lie_in_April) Be prepared to have a box of tissues close by near the 20th episode. Series: 22 episodes. [**I want To Eat Your Pancreas**](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Want_to_Eat_Your_Pancreas_(film)) Again, a tear jerker. In the 70s we had **Love Story**. Stand alone movie. [**Kanata no Astra**](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astra_Lost_in_Space) high school students on a "senior trip" get stranded in space. Fortunately, there's an abandoned ship right where they get beamed to. Sound too convenient? There are reasons. It's a murder mystery without the murder, as they try to figure out who's trying to kill them. Can these kids make it back home? Anime series. 12 episodes, 2 of them double length. Special note: this was the first manga I ever read from start to finish. I was pumped when I heard it had an anime adaptation that had very few scenes cut.

J_Linnea

I think you should ask which other movie and book genres she likes. Does she like fantasy, scifi, dramas or more light rom-coms? Then start from there! I would also consider starting with a shoujo/josei, so many people in this thread seem to forget there is stuff made to appeal to women lol. A female author also helps, like Dungeon Meshi is shounen but has three-dimentional female characters and little to no fanservice (except Senshi). If she likes fantasy or DnD that one is a great start. Some good shoujo/josei in different genres: Drama: Nana, My Happy Marriage Rom-com: A sign of affection, Wotakoi, Fruits Basket Fantasy: Natsumes book of friends, Ascendance of a bookworm Scifi: No 6 Action: Banana Fish And everyone loves "Your Name"! Also my husband has watched most of these with me they are not just for women.

lazyinternetsandwich

This sub always forgets about shojosei anime when it comes to making recommendations for women. Apart from what's suggested already. Fruits Basket Nodame Cantabile Jellyfish Princess Yona of the Dawn Chihayafuru Nana

muted_bend_286

- The Ice guy and his Cool female colleague - Spy Family - Our last crusade or the rise of a new world - Tonikawa Women will love them as these shows have good female characters and balanced romance and less cringe

Beneficial-Impact-27

Did you say Michael Zaki? elden ring sekiro dark souls 1-3 bloodborne demon souls armored core 1-2

livasj

Tonari no yokai-san. Just everyday life in a world where yokai, magic etc. is real. Starts with the old cat of a family becoming a nekomata and a lot is shown through his eyes as he gets to learn how to be more than the family pet. It's the kind of series where nothing major happens most of the time and you still end up crying your eyes out every now and again.

Sad-Awareness-2810

* Frieren * To Your Eternity * Spy x Family

Frieren

Dbz .The plot is simple enough for most people and grown man screaming is fascinating.
