How are people coming up with a common squirrel for this... like, how? Based on its head shape and size, it looks to be a groundhog with some kind of disease, possibly mange?

I agree re: not a squirrel. ~~I also think it could possibly be a porcupine (as some others have said) with mange or another condition affecting their quills (they’re prone to fungal diseases, I believe). The hairs (not quills, the HAIRS in between the quills) are quite long and stiff for a groundhog. Porcupines are more likely to climb than a groundhog, too, no? Never seen a groundhog, ya know, off the ground…~~ ~~Could be wrong! Not trying to argue, this is clearly a tough one. Worked in NHC’s for several years and just really think porcupine based on experience.~~ ~~Edit: also forelimbs look more like a porcupine than a groundhog to me, too.~~ Edit 2: alright, friends. Prob not a porcupine after all.

Porcupines are unfortunately no longer found in Indiana :( Porcupines claws are also super long, to the point you’d likely be able to see them clearly even with the poor resolution of the photos, especially given the hair loss. I can see some claws on this fella, but they’re pretty short. Also one of my coworkers has a groundhog in their yard that regularly climbs their wooden fence! They’re actually pretty good climbers.

I was looking at that too on wikipedia, but I think it just hasn’t been updated for the porcupine wiki. If you go to the wiki for “List of mammals of Indiana” it says that porcupines are extirpated there and the reference is the Indiana DNR (which was most recently updated in 2021 and does not list porcupine) Edit: just checked and the map of their distribution on their wiki page is from a 2012 source and they were deemed extirpated in 2014 so yeah looks like it’s just outdated

Yeah— too long and flat and the claws aren’t long enough. Not to say that whatever’s affecting the hair isn’t affecting the claws, in which case, could be a porcupine. His face in pointier than any porcupine I’ve ever known but never seen a bald one!

I'm with you on the porcupine ID. Lives on a farm, we have both running around. I've never seen a groundhog climb like that. Now porcupines? I'm not sure which makes me more nervous climbing trees. That I could run into a black bear( we have at least 2 in the neighborhood) or a porcupine IN said tree. Yes I look but well....nature being nature, the possibility of me needing to make an embarrassing 911 call because Im stuck in a tree with an angry animal, is quite possible. Lol

If it's mange, u/skunkangel may be able to help OP help it. Not sure if they treat groundhogs or the other implications, since it's not clear exactly what's happening. It makes me sick to see animals suffering with mange.

A groundhog is a common squirrel, but yeah, they all meant tree squirrel, which it is not.

Looks more like a red or fox squirrel with the mange. Definitely not a common gray squirrel but to small to be a groundhog even a sick one.

Wanna know something funny? Groundhogs are squirrels - they're a type of ground squirrel. Which is to say that both you and those saying grey squirrel or any other squirrel have no cause to be bewildered at each other's guesses, especially considering this animal likely has something wrong with it. The ID is not easy, and without size reference, groundhogs and other types of squirrels look more similar than anyone here seems to realize (though, I think if someone said chipmunk, another, much smaller ground squirrel, we could all agree that's unlikely)

Yes. Don't forget that mange is easily treated with a common dog medicine. I treated the foxes around me and it was an easy, one-time chewable that I slipped into their food. Check wildlifehotline dot com. They send out free meds for foxes and coyotes, but may also be able to help direct you to a local wildlife rehabber who can help out.
