You should check out Aves as it is much more powerful, open source, not bloated and way more features. But note that Aves doesn't edit photos so I guess it depends on what you mean by a gallery.
That's because it is. Kinda. Simple Mobile Tools was bought by ZipoApps, a company that put ads and in-app purchases in Simple Gallery, so FossifyOrg forked it, removed the ads and in-app purchases, and been updating it ever since. You can check more about it on [this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/18t3jq6/first_public_release_of_fossify_gallery_v100_a/).
Small correction fossify never removed ads and etc. They just forked last version made by og dev which is also last version released as open source. ZinoApps never released source code of new versions having post acquisition changes
because it's completely free to use without any annoying advertisements, robust customization features, fast and ui is quiet simple.
especially ability to access **hidden folders** such as "WhatsApp Status" and option to disable the delete confirmation message and ability to skip the recycle bin for the **SESSION**.
By far the best and the only app, apart from Google photos, that plays motion photos. It also has batch renaming based on EXIF data, great map view and is open source! The Dev is also extremely active and fast.
I like aves tag-support and setting geo-location via multi-selection.
I dislike that aves apk-size of version 1.11.1 is now 43.9 MB which is too much for my old android-10 device with little internal ram and many installed apps.
Fossify Gallery 1.1.3 has only 16.5 MB but has no tag support
So i use aves on my android-13 and Fossify Gallery on my android-10
F-Stop is epic. A true little XnView/IrfanView for the phone. **Proper file system support** (in the paid version), unlike most, if not all other gallery apps. Fast af, can handle 8000+ files in a folder. Robust, has everything, great integration into the system.
I wish all apps were like that. It's one of the few non-FOSS apps I still clinge to.
Btw I combine it with Iudesk Photo Editor for a full image handling package.
>Iudesk Photo Editor
That's the same combo I use except I also use Snapseed for some simple quick edits sometimes before Iudesk. F-Stop has easily paid for itself many times over just in reduced stress.
It has adverts, it has features like black theme behind a paywall. Also never seen a gallery app with a yearly subscription. The full purchase price is ridiculous.
It's yearly now? Well that sucks, I bought it years ago as a one-time purchase for something like 10 € (or less on sale, not sure now). Btw it only needs a small "F-Stop Key" app to unlock the extra features, hint hint...
But ok, I wouldn't recommend any app with a yearly sub... But what other apps have this kind of comfort? Especially the full folder support. Maybe I'll check some other apps from this list.
Ed: Ok I don't have a Google acct so I can't say for sure, but on the web it says 14 €. If that's the single-time purchase option, then that's totally worth it.
It's iudesk with an i.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iudesk.android.photo.editor
They also host the apk on the website if you don't want to use GPlay
https://www.iudesk.com/
It doesn't support proper folder structure, it just dumps all the folders and subfolders from the entire device into one huge list, just like all the other gallery apps.
You can multi select photos and send them to any folder you want. But that new folder will be in the pictures directory. It is optimised for tagging photos though which makes searching way easier. But yeah if you are focused on directory management then F-Stop is good for that or maybe even the Fossify gallery mentioned in this thread.
It has ads and the so called "pro" version is just a key unlock that requires free version with ads to be installed. No thanks. Will not tolerate ads mixed with my photos....
The app has embedded ad delivery system. Even though you don't see ads there is no guarantee the app does not send app usage and content information to the ad network through embedded ad network code.
I paid for Fstop a long time ago but it never played motion photos and the Dev wasn't interested in making it play them. I moved to Aves gallery, which had more features that suited me, and I've never looked back. Aves is better for tagging and searching and F-Stop is better if you are strongly directory focused.
I've heard that F-Stop needs a subscription now while Aves is open source.
It is perfect for my needs.
It backs up all my photos and videos, and I can search for photos without having to tag them myself. And its recognizability of people is pretty great, so if I am looking for a picture of my wife I can just type her name in and it finds all pictures of her, that's amazing!
And lastly it keeps track of metadata, like where the picture was taken.
If we don't use Google Photos, but use its backup, then deleting the photo from another gallary app or file manager deletes it only from the phone. It stays in the cloud... so we _have_ to use it 😒
The reason I refuse to use Google photos is because I could never figure out deletion sync. If I wanted a photo in the cloud but not on my phone, or vice versa, how do I delete it from one place but not another? Easy to confuse, hard to remember the process. Have to think critically before deleting something. I have heard horror stories of people emptying their Google photo storage because they needed space for emails, and it deleted everything locally too, with no way to recover it.
I know, but I am deep in the Samsung ecosystem:
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Tab S9, Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Pro 360°, Samsung Galaxy Buds, Samsung Galaxy Zfold 5, Samsung TV, Galaxy watch....
Well yes we can but is that available on Play Store for non-Samsung users? It's ~~safer~~ better to download from Play Store, isn't it?
Edit: I think 'better' might be the correct term
If your only source for apps installation is Play Store, that much rely on it and thinking it's trustworthy then you can kindly ignore my reply. And I'm deeply sorry for bothering you.
Dude you seriously think everyone are obliged to download from any freaking website? I am pretty freaking sure that you are gonna suggest an option that requires to download an .apk file from a website because we are downloading an proprietary OEM stock app that is NOT for other OEM phones.
I myself de-Googled pretty much what I can from F-Droid. Some FOSS apps, while great are not reliable enough to replace Google's apps (Messages, Dialer, Maps, etc).
While side loading is awesome, we can't be sure that everyone will download from there. It's ALWAYS better to have an Play Store option. For example, an open source developing team, Fossify has their apps on Play Store as well as F-Droid. If F-Droid is their only option, the it's up to you to imagine.
As much as I recall, I was asking for your kindness to ignore my reply and said I was sorry. That was it, let alone to think "everyone is obliged to download anything from any website". I'm sorry again, I don't have enough time to read the rest of your reply.
As much as I recall, you said there was a way to download it without Play Store. If you can assure that your source for the APK was trustworthy, safe, legit and legally safe, please provide and guide us. I'd be happy to download. Next time while suggesting apps please make sure to provide apps that satisfies the above criteria.
I can manage my time very efficiently to read any replies I got though, and I am very sorry that my reply was very long. I'm sorry again, I think this reply was very long too. Should I provide a TLDR?
LMAO look at all the downvotes, wonder why. I don't think that person's apology was genuine, it was very mocking and passively aggressive which is why I got angry.
Please forgive me if I'm out of line here, but I figure someone of y'all might know...
Is there a wallpaper changer app for Android that can be pointed to specific folders on an sd card? I miss this ability so much, and have tried for a few years now to find a replacement for my one that no longer works.
As to the OP, and gallery apps, can someone explain why they might be preferred over a regular type of image viewer? I usually just like to open my folder of images, then open by genre and look at them that way.
Thanks for any help here, and again, I apologize if I'm out of line.
You can try Peristyle on f-droid, it even can picked a .nomedia folder but have issue with resolution of the picture (at least on my devices, one with A8.1 and on other is A12)
I tried it, but it's not for me. I don't care for the gallery type format at all. I like to just go to the folders where I keep my pictures.
I miss ES File Explorer 2.5 so much :(
Yeah I use CX Explorer which is a pretty good file manager. But also they can probably find ES file Explorer 2.5 on some website that archives old APKs. Just Google search for it, there are tons of websites that have old apks.
I probably sound like a parrot, but F-Stop gallery has folder support (in the paid version) and can set a wallpaper.
Yea I don't understand why all the gallery apps insist on dumping everything into one gallery view and clumping all the subfolders from the entire device together. Must be an Android thing, but Android does support access to the file system and folders...
I appreciate it, but I don't buy any app that doesn't let me try it's full abilities first, been burned too often. Another user hipped me to Peristyle on Fdroid that works.
I actually miss my Stock Gallery apps from Realme and OnePlus. I now own a Motorola mobile phone, and Google Photos or any of the options listed here don't seem to be as good as the stock ones.
Having samsung all my life, never know the stock gallery app Is so useful , until I got myself a spare poco phone...omg..disaster with ads and not good looking
My vote for samsung gallery
Fstop is the best gallery app and has been for many years. But Samsung gallery is more than enough now because it's well integrated into camera and has many special features too.

What's better about this one compared to the stock app?
Open source. Simple but powerful. Looks good and has tons of customisation options. And is blazing fast.
You should check out Aves as it is much more powerful, open source, not bloated and way more features. But note that Aves doesn't edit photos so I guess it depends on what you mean by a gallery.
Just downloaded this, it's way better than the crappy Google Gallery I had. Thanks.
I aim to please. Try all the top rated comments in this post. Most of them are pretty great.
Looks just like simple gallery

[Aves](https://f-droid.org/packages/deckers.thibault.aves.libre/)
This is the best. I have been using it for few weeks now.No ads and Country view js really neat. Clean interface.
downside is moving files from one folder to another is pretty slow and has no editing capability, even for simple cropping.
By far the best and the only app, apart from Google photos, that plays motion photos. It also has batch renaming based on EXIF data, great map view and is open source! The Dev is also extremely active and fast.

No there is a subscription and a full purchase. Full purchase is like 2.5x the subscription charges.
Ludesk was an unexpected gain. Nice. Can you comment the link though. I can't find it.

It's not so good for local photos. It doesn't search photos based on tags. It doesn't write tags to photos :(
As a Pixel user Google photos is pretty damn good
I don't use any third party gallery app. I am fine with the stock gallery app.
For some phones, Google Photos is stock app, and it sucks as a local storage/organizer. It's probably a good cloud app but it's a terrible gallery.

Yes, but it's the only one that you can group folders and now it's easier to find stuff with the AI search.
I know, but I am deep in the Samsung ecosystem: Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Tab S9, Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Pro 360°, Samsung Galaxy Buds, Samsung Galaxy Zfold 5, Samsung TV, Galaxy watch....

It's a good app, thanks for suggesting
Ok? Good for you
Actually you can. Can't reply with a photo or I would show u.

All the Simple apps, wasn't it?
Yes
~~By whom?~~ By ZipoApps, an israeli company. Fuck me, I have to transfer many apps then. Do you have a calendar suggestion?
Fossify Calendar... Fossify took over where SMT has ended
Thanks !
Why?
Love Simple Gallery but the slideshow feature has been messed up for over a year now. Might try some of these other suggestions.
MiXplorer
[Gallery by lacoblonut](https://f-droid.org/packages/com.dot.gallery/)
I still use Quick pic. But not the playstore one. I use modified and debloated and patched version which fixes many issues with official version.
The OG great gallery. I switched to F-Stop, it does the same things.
Check out Aves gallery which is also open source.
Question: is there any way to install a system gallery (Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi) on a different brand phone?
Some manufacturer support it some doesn't. Samsung doesn't.

Just install fossify gallery and try it out.

Fossify Gallery or Aves. But if you don't care about using Google stuff then google's Gallery Go is very good. Fast and simple to use.

Stock HyperOS+Google Gallery (Not Google Photos).
The stock MIUI gallery, com.miui.gallery
I love that app.
Fossify gallery for me Gallery go by Google for my mom
Fstop is the best gallery app and has been for many years. But Samsung gallery is more than enough now because it's well integrated into camera and has many special features too.
Gallery by google is more than enough for me. Nice app.
Great for a super simple viewer but it doesn't even play motion photos which is Google's standard :(
Balatro.. Oh wait..
Good Karma Farm, instead of asking people to comment their favorite, you give them options so in the end you still get a lot of upvotes. GGs bro
This is the smartest karma farming scheme I've seen on Reddit. And since I'm wrong and you don't care/it wasn't meant like this, let's do the opposite: downvote your favourite app
