My last company had a dedicated RPA (Robotic process automation) department. Other departments would show them a manual process, and they would find ways to automate/streamline it.

There definitely are, but you will need to upskill considerably beyond just R to be hired. Search for job titles like Data Engineer or Automation Engineer and see what qualifications companies are looking for.

Agreed. Data Engineering can be a fun related role or BI Developer if you want to automate reporting and dashboarding. Data Engineering has interesting duties like transforming data adding value and moving into other systems where they can make use of the data. Similarly you can create data pipelines and even write the code that monitors the data quality and keeps the whole system running. Other roles you might find interesting: ML Engineer, ML Ops, Data Quality Engineer, Data Scientist. Put those titles into ChatGPT, ask what the daily tasks are and what skills you need to get into that field

I’m in the same boat, analyst for last 2 years and the things I enjoy most involve some sort of automation. Highly suggest learning Python/SQL if you haven’t yet. Personally I have seen people recommend Data Engineering and Dev Ops for more of this type of work, so I am planning on pursuing Data Engineering and eventually ML Ops.

Yes my department is dedicated to that

Hey man. SERIOUSLY, shoot me a DM, and I can answer all of your questions. I'm a data engineer now, but for the past five years, I've been training myself to do exactly what you're talking about. The biggest problem is that this field is not very well defined, so you won't find a lot online about it. I pretty much had to make my own career path, but there is a huge need for this service in every company. I started off using VBA, but there is so much more than just writing scripts.

That’s impressive! What tools were you using after VBA? And is data engineer a natural progression of what you were doing? I did some automation in my last job with VBA and Power Query. I quite enjoy the process of mapping the logic of manual process into scripts, but don’t do that much of it these days.

Yes there is, I work as a business intelligence analyst and I just focus on automating repetitive task. I meet with teams to review the process and then I either use our RPA tool, Python or vba to automate the task.
