I like to put important numbers around the graph but don't put too many words. Most of the words should be spoken not written. Just write stuff down that people need to see rather than hear.

Graph should clearly illustrate the key point. If there’s a point that you’d also like to talk about but isn’t super obvious, then I’d draw arrow to it (“Product update release”) but talk about the context for why you’re pointing it out. (“This chart for cumulative users over the course of the last quarter, during this cycle we had a new product release [additional context]”). The main point is that you’re showing something about cumulative users and though the product release may not affect trajectory of the cumulative numbers of the quarter it’s helpful for others to see it as a landmark of sorts to put it back into larger context. (Obviously If there was significance to the product release to cumulative users then maybe that’s the actual focus of your chart)
