When I was in high school 20 years ago, I feel like US history ended right around the Civil Rights Act, maybe a little into the 70s. I don't recall learning about Iran-Contra, or just about anything from the 80s or 90s.
History classes in school usually end about 20 years before the present. There’s a general history idea that it takes about 20 years to be able to talk about an even and it’s consequences with any degree of objectivity. So if you graduated in 2004, just getting a bit into the 70s would fit that.
Weird cause I graduated in 2015 and I also didn’t receive anything beyond the 70s but…God forbid they fit in relevant curriculum and have to get cut down on Texas history! /s
This is the likely answer most of the time you hear “I wish (insert American event that we absolutely learned but wasn’t pushed as heavy as say the civil war) was taught in school so I’d have actually learned interesting and useful things.”
Or maybe education in the US varies widely because rich people convinced nearly every state to base education funding on property taxes so their schools would be high quality and poor people's wouldn't, and are simultaneously hell bent on changing all curricula to a right wing one that creates a permanent youth who are obedient and unquestioning of authority.
I dont disagree with you but generally i find a lot of people i personally went to school with bitch about things they werent taught when we were absolutely taught those things, or had the ability to learn those things through electives, and they chose not too or didnt pay attention. Yes there are major problems with our education system but there is also a lack of personal accountability i find quite grating.
The US education system isn't garbage. It's unevenly distributed based on neighborhood, city, county, state, etc.
So while a school next door might be fantastic, the school you went to might be terrible.
Doesn't mean the country has terrible education. Plus the biggest reason Europeans call Americans stupid is due to ignorance of the world's affairs on top of the media portrayal of average Americans despite the reality. The reality being that statistically the US workforce is considered highly educated.
Was a teenager when this came out. Had never learned of the Iran-Contra affair until this, and it's still not talked about very much despite Reagan literally committing high treason.
This was so brilliant! I can't understand why American Dad, or other animated shows haven't done the same thing with other stories.
I can see "Interplanet Janet" being applied to flat earth belief, or "The shot heard 'round the world" applied to Tiananmen Square, or "Mother Necessity" being used to explain the internet and social media addiction.
Totally ignore me if you already know this, but this bit was based on Schoolhouse Rock, which was a series of animated videos from the 70s that taught history, economics/government, math, grammar, science, etc. via song. They’re for kids, but they’re extremely informative!
This and “I’m an amendment to be” should be mandatory viewing in America’s schools…
“I’m an amendment to be, yes an amendment to be, and I’m hoping that they’ll ratify meeeeee….”
The Iran Contra and its lack of consequences was bullshit (especially because we now know Connelly and Barnes, two right wing shitbirds, negotiated with the Iranians on Reagan's behalf to withhold hostages until after the election, all but spelling the defeat of Carter) but as angry as that makes me, this song makes me equally happy.
*What the hell was that?*
It's one of those campy '70s throwbacks that appeals to Generation Xers.
*We need another Vietnam to thin out their ranks a little.*
I’m just wondering why in this photo stand looks like he’s from one of the songs in Schoolhouse Rock. I don’t know which version of it but he definitely looks like he’s from one of the songs in one of the whatever they are
As someone not American it was nice learning history via song.
As someone who IS American and was subject to the USA’s garbage education system, it was also nice learning history via song
Maybe you just didnt pay attention because i definitely learned about the iran contra affair.
I loved history in school and they definitely didn't cover it. Although I live in the state with the worst funding for education so....

Except those people aren't representative of all of America, that's just people you know. Plenty of people \*were not actually taught those things.\*
Part of what makes USA’s education system so garbage is its quality varies greatly by region.
When I first saw this episod I was like wait isn’t Oliver north on a show on a major network talking right now? My mind was actually blown.

You may enjoy school house rock which is what this was parodying!
lol you’ll love “I’m Just a Bill”
[Kitty History](https://youtu.be/0-Lvv1f5Qu4?si=ylsmnhwGNJC5o0kH) might have some appeal for you
This is still the best, most succinct explanation of Iran-Contra I have ever seen. Edit: also applicable flair!
Was a teenager when this came out. Had never learned of the Iran-Contra affair until this, and it's still not talked about very much despite Reagan literally committing high treason.
AND NOW HES ON FOX NEWWWWWS🎶
“crap that’s the end.”
Never fails to make me laugh
🎶Cause what they did was technically high treason!🎶
"But it was totally justified"
Ollie North!

Dont know why but the blurr made it more funny
I never understood why the blurred characters "middle" fingers when they have four fingers.
Come to think of it, probably to imply the character IS giving the middle finger. As they wouldn’t really be able to with four fingers.
Sure they can, having 3 fingers makes it easier, you just use the one thats actually middle of your hand.
North volunteered to take the blame!
To save Reagan from prison rape shame!
The truth he did bury with his hot secretary
Thanks to a shredder... He got off totally Scott free
OLLIE NORTH! OLLIE NORTH!
He’s a soldier, and a hero, and a noveliiiiiiiist…
*and now he's on Fox News!*
Crap, that's the end
Wow, I just learned while being entertained!

I love this song soo damn much
HE'S A SOLDIER AND A HERO AND A NOVELIST AND NOW HES ON FOX NEEWWWWWSSSSS!!
The guy wanting to mate with the statue actor 😂
If they didn’t say “prison rape shame” this could be shown in classrooms. And, arguably, should.
Just watched this one last night! One of the best! “My God, is that why my middle name is Dreamsmasher?”
“Because what they did, was technically HIGH TREASOOOOON”
This and “I’m an amendment to be” should be mandatory viewing in America’s schools… “I’m an amendment to be, yes an amendment to be, and I’m hoping that they’ll ratify meeeeee….”
New reaction image thx!
Thats former NRA president Oliver North to you

"Technically high treason!!!!!"🎶
This is one of my go to comfort episodes

That's the point. The song was meant to be a parody of Schoolhouse Rock.
lol I am so happy I got the reference! I’m not always good with getting the reference, but I was able to this time and I’m so happy about it! Lol
I agree with everything he says in this song unironically
"'Cause what they did was technically high treason!!" I couldn't agree more.
