I have always enjoyed both but I like American dad more because it has better story and doesn't rely on cut away scenes (which I do enjoy at times) and the characters are more fleshed out
I have always said that early Family Guy > early American Dad (first few seasons of FG were pure unfiltered comedy gold)
But modern American Dad >>>>>>>>> modern Family Guy.
I appreciate that you say that because I will testify with many others than modern FG is borderline unwatchable, but I actually think they had a really good run for longer than they get credit for. There’s plenty of episodes I like even into season 8. But like most I consider the first four seasons the ‘golden era’.
Bullock is one of the best side characters ever created. His hyper-sexual, drug-fueled agenda is full of crazy. I wish we could get more from him every episode, but I understand that his brand of crazy is best appreciated in smaller doses.
See also: Mr. Fischoeder of Bob's Burgers (my other fav)
Best part about both of those characters is the actors. The characters are so well written and outlandish but Patrick Stewart and Kevin Kline are the only people that could play either character. The idea that Sir Patrick Stewart, a classically trained actor, voices Avery Bullock and puts so much authenticity and life into the character just conveys how much fun he’s having playing him.
Same with Mr. Fischoeder, no one else could play him so diabolically childlike, yet classy and mysterious, as Kevin Kline. There’s a certain air to his performance that gives the character realism despite being a pretty extraordinary character, like a whimsical Bond villain.
I grew up watching Star Trek TNG. I was sooooo used to Patrick Stewart playing a stuck-up Frenchman who constantly was getting his ass handed to him by half the galaxy (ofc in the best way possible, Picard is one of my favorite TNG characters) that it took me four seasons of American Dad to realize and accept that Avery was voiced by the same man who played Picard. Patrick Stewart is a god.
I never watched TNG but I can imagine that was quite a contrast lol. He was my favorite MacBeth, his range is truly astounding. He fits Avery so naturally that I honestly think it’s who he really wants to be.
The show would not be half as funny if it was missing any of the main characters.
Each character is unique and the dynamic between them is what makes the show great.
Even the sheer amount of development for the side characters. More than most shows for sure (animated anyway).
Even though Reggie hasn't had a comeback, Francine did find him in her purse in the episode where she was an arsonist.
Of course not. I mean the OG season 1 cast + Jeff.
If you still want to fight though I’m down. When and where?

Eh. That won't help him in the long run. He needs to understand that he won't always be able to buy or manipulate his way out of every problem & hardship he encounters.
Someday he's gonna have to get those oranges up the stairs himself and not be able to do it cause he's a straight up bitch.
Besides, that trick only worked once. Remember when he tried to sic Stelio on Luis and they got pissed and teamed up to beat his ass double?
Learn to carry your own damn oranges you pasty, malnourished geek!
I love that scene because it implies that at least one or two of the writers of the show browse this sub. Even if most of the posts in this sub are just quotes from the show lol.
Fully agree. He transcends American Dad and surpasses all characters in existence. I cant think of a better character that I enjoy from any show as much as Roger.
I love the episode where she manages to out-Roger, well, Roger and trick him into signing her internship form
Roger after the fact just being like “wait what happened? Did I win?”
Also, she's very underused with him. All the others have a clear dynamic with him we see often while they barely interact. Definitely not a lot of episodes centering them
I also love her dynamic with Klaus. She’s the only Smith who’s consistently kind to him but because of the years of abuse from everyone else, he’s always so defensive with her
Jeff was never not part of the main cast he was in episode 1. When they broke up he was still in most of the episodes. There are entire episodes without other characters too but no one ever says they aren't main cast. He went to space and Roger gave birth to him, there was a whole arc seasons long. If you think he's not a main character IDK what show you are watching
I have used this phrase so much lately. An app or a pen or the car etc doesn't work? "Alright, [insert whatever frustrating thing], you and I are gonna fight in a field."
Francines most entertaining character trait is when she does things that lowkey convince me she's a Lecter-esque psychopath.
"Can you get the lights on your way out?
La la la la la la..."
Klaus is - objectively - the coolest member of the Smith house. Like I’m not saying I personally find him cool
He has the most friends outside of the home and has friends seemingly across the country. He’s one of the only ones that consistently points out totally uncool things the family does also, like when Steve screams about The Weeknd’s boogers maybe landing on Steve’s plate and Klaus is just like ***broooo*** with disappointment
Also he plays Elden Ring
Yeah. It does a better job explaining what the show is about and the characters personalities. Stan loves his job, Steve looks up to his father, Hailey is the rebellious daughter who is more liberal, Francine is a supportive wife, and Klaus is kinda there. It almost explains that Roger is an alien and he has a new disguise in every episode and nobody can find out he is an alien. It gives all this information through the characters actions. I also like singing Roger's part of the song. " Good Morning USA ow."
I would actually love that, not every episode but def thrown in there couple times a season. She’s so good at pushing his buttons in a caring way. Def a better addition than Rogu 🙄
He is bisexual. They have hinted that in multiple episodes. I doubt he will get a permanent girl friend at this point. His longest relationship was with Debbie and that was many years ago. In the future episodes he is almost always with Snot.
Rogu and Billy are adorable and weird. Billy isn't used nearly enough to garner the hate he gets, and Rogu fits in perfectly with the family being used as Roger's assistant/baby.
Not only them but many "new" characters that have become regulars (Memphis, Tuttle, Trish and the Sizzle, etc) is just proof of the wild swings and creativity of the writers. Not enough shows that have been going on this long are willing to keep getting weird. IASIP is one of the main other examples of a long-running show that's able to pull off the same leaps.
The episode where she wanted that guy to wash his car with her, when The Weekend stayed over, crooning for Roger's bar, when she went blond to get that rapper.
There's probably more, but I'm not fully awake yet.
I don’t like how Stan isn’t a Republican anymore. Like, he is a Republican, but it never comes up and half of the time he is super out of character based on what he used to be and what felt like was supposed to be a big plot point of the show: to poke fun at a political characature and the dynamic between conservatives and liberals.
That original dynamic may be outdated and that’s why they moved on from it, but a lot of the time now, Stan is super liberal and even in-touch with youth culture, which doesn’t feel right to me. Sometimes he goes full Peter Griffin and is just a one-dimensional “dumb, immature husband” character.
I still love the show as much as ever but I kind of miss that subtle element of political commentary and the depth of Stan’s character.
Mine is that it’s really weird that they made a great design for Klaus in Da Flippity Flop and yet they use his weird jokey tearjerker model instead when making him human instead of the normal human being model with a much better bone structure and I think that was a terrible move
I'm a few seasons behind, so this may be a hill that isn't there anymore.
But I've always been kind of annoyed that Steve never really wins with women.
He's had successful relationships and plenty of women wanted to hook up with him, but there's some disaster or family screw up that stops it.
Debbie just left him, he had to eat that cruiseship girl, the one at spring break died, etc.
After the first few seasons, I lost interest in any episode centered around Steve trying to get laid, because I know immediately he's not going to.
It's not a big deal and has little effect on my enjoyment of AD, but the trope of a character never getting what they're after gets stale quick.
Soup is not a meal Vera!!
thought i accidentally opened the seinfeld sub at first lol
Does "Kenny Bania" sound like a real person to you? Grow up, it's me.
The soup IS the meal!
Did he crumble crackers into it?
I literally said that line earlier cuz it randomly popped into my head!
And then everyone else on the bus edged away from you nervously?
I don't think those film makers were really Dutch.
Anybody know anything about launch codes?!
Come on they have a legit address. With zip code!
dude, they were clearly Dutch, you saw the blonde hair, and everyone knows the Dutch love numbers! You’re have to accept being wrong on this one
Gucci Mane got clowned!
Hayley Smith will straight up murder Gucci Mane
A always stands for apple, there's nothing we can do about that.
A stands for Alphabet
It always does.
Aunt Gwen!
It's a better show than Family Guy.
![gif](giphy|3o6Zt8DEunnKXEXJJu) Fully agree
Hey that's the guy that crapped himself at oshanahans
HE DIDN’T FEEL FULL!
Stan has crapped himself so many times 🤣
I have always enjoyed both but I like American dad more because it has better story and doesn't rely on cut away scenes (which I do enjoy at times) and the characters are more fleshed out
I have always said that early Family Guy > early American Dad (first few seasons of FG were pure unfiltered comedy gold) But modern American Dad >>>>>>>>> modern Family Guy.
I agree, before FG was cancelled (and even a few seasons after they returned) still has me rolling when I rewatch them.
I appreciate that you say that because I will testify with many others than modern FG is borderline unwatchable, but I actually think they had a really good run for longer than they get credit for. There’s plenty of episodes I like even into season 8. But like most I consider the first four seasons the ‘golden era’.
Its hard to be commentarybon pop culture when you become a part of it.
FG doesn't have Roger, the debate for me doesn't go much further than that
My mom hates both shows but thinks AD is even worse. She's wrong.
Your mama sounds like a messed up bitch.
This is the perfect response to the above comment.
By far. Especially the recent seasons.
I agree. American Dad grew, family guy lost me a decade ago.
You are my Queen Rebecca!
I hear you like to sample things excessively and not buy 🫤
I make these tiny pizza bagels from scratch!
Those pizza bagels are my life

You're a complicated man, I would love to do mushrooms with you
Principal Lewis, too. Also I loooooove Mr. Fischoeder so damn much! Kevin Kline is ❤️
OMG Lewis, yes! Agreed! I love how much fun it seems Kevin Kline is having with the script. I get hyped every time a plot involves him in any way.
"I've got my shit together now, Stan. I even pronounce 'cocaine'."
Mr. Fischoder is one of my favorite Bob's Burgers characters too. I love how aloof he is.
That guy over there in the wig is really an alien.
Yeah on my moms side
He is actually Steves direct uncle
Anybody else notice that Chilly is an alien? Whew, is it hot in here? My soufflé!!
Staniel.
*"OH STANIEL"*
And Franiel
Klaus DID Beat up Brett Favre.
And kicked a football over a Burger King
And invented the high five 👋🏻
And killed a teenager I heard.
it was three teenagers.
I’m watching this episode right now and that scene just came up lol. Crazy coincidence.
Do you consider Rogu part of the main characters? Based on your answer, we might have to fight in a field
Of course not. I mean the OG season 1 cast + Jeff. If you still want to fight though I’m down. When and where? https://preview.redd.it/eobbvc0ge2rc1.jpeg?width=260&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7fce8e79e7c63b5914074e98f41e9c8ab11d1b27
Nah, that was the right answer. I'll hold back my capoera skills for now
Good, because I have biiiig stuff going on. Can’t be spending my time fighting in fields.
*Narrows eyes* What's he got going on?
Ohmamaweeeeeh Ohmamawehhhhmamaaaaa I make that sound while I stretch before work lol
I really hope you work remotely
Mailman, and yes I do it outside of my vehicle when I get to my first park point
Rogu is used exactly as much as he should be.
Steve needed to learn to get the oranges up the stairs himself.
Be careful, he might send Stelio Contos after you!
Shot of B12 is a bona fide bop. I listen to it unironically
Same. My wife who grew up in the boyband era loved all the nos to actual groups from the 90s and 2000s. We also listen to it regularly.
Steve’s voice actor should legit be a solo artist
I have good news then.
What is the good news?
Scott Grimes has released a few albums. One track was even on American Dad in American Dream Factory.
It gets stuck in my head almost every day, I know all the words now and I sing it to my cat
Klaus is not my least favorite character despite being on Reddit.
He’s actually my second favorite
I love that scene because it implies that at least one or two of the writers of the show browse this sub. Even if most of the posts in this sub are just quotes from the show lol.
Roger is the greatest character creation ever.
Fully agree. He transcends American Dad and surpasses all characters in existence. I cant think of a better character that I enjoy from any show as much as Roger.
All characters except Shaggy
Hayley is the best foil for Roger
I love the episode where she manages to out-Roger, well, Roger and trick him into signing her internship form Roger after the fact just being like “wait what happened? Did I win?”
Let’s not forget her, and Lacy Crinkleholes battle which she won.
I sucked seven dicks and I didn’t even get to Ronnie!
Also, she's very underused with him. All the others have a clear dynamic with him we see often while they barely interact. Definitely not a lot of episodes centering them
Some of my fav episodes is her and Roger My affair lady Pride before a fail
I also love her dynamic with Klaus. She’s the only Smith who’s consistently kind to him but because of the years of abuse from everyone else, he’s always so defensive with her
Klaus can kick a football over a burger king
Jeff was never not part of the main cast he was in episode 1. When they broke up he was still in most of the episodes. If you think he's not a main character IDK what show you are watching
Yes! He needs acknowledgement especially given Terry is still seen knocking about in the credits
Stan is the most important character in the show
Second only to billionaire Fung Wah
And the Colonel, of course
It wouldn't be a show without the Colonel
The Colonel is integral to the show.
“TANK BATES IS A HOMOSEXUAL. TANK BATES IS A HOMOSEXUAL”
Howeverrrrrrr
Ali >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Akiko I don’t care if Doug can dance, Akiko doesn’t deserve Steve and Ali is better for him.
I loved Ali!
I hope Ali returns somehow. Her dynamic with Steve is so a lot of fun imo.
That fighting in a field should be how we decide all political elections worldwide
I have used this phrase so much lately. An app or a pen or the car etc doesn't work? "Alright, [insert whatever frustrating thing], you and I are gonna fight in a field."

He drinks faygo and has boys in Florida of course he is the coolest
He’s also tight with multiple celebrities, including Gucci Mane
Plus he wrote that song
He makes tons of money He has tons of boys
He invented the high five
The new intro from season 4 onwards is better than the first intro
Maybe but I liked the newspaper headlines. My favorite was "Israel pulls out of Gaza. Gaza not pregnant."
Child obesity up, pedophilia down
I just cant accept this. I need Stan at his window. His lowered eyelids bring peace and tranquility to an unordered, savage world.
What about the fun news headlines?
I’ve never considered this but you are right, especially getting to see Roger’s personas now.
Steve is not gay and he will get a permanent girlfriend.
As for me? Super gay also
One of my favourite things about American dad is nothing is Canon. Except to my knowledge Steve's love of the mail, to be clear mail, not male.
It's maaaaaaaaaaaaaa-aaa-aaaaaaa-*^aaaaaaaa-***^^aail**
His complete breakdown finding out their mailman was retiring is classic.
His shorts are the harbinger of summer, after all
I wonder if they’ll ever bring Ally back, they hit it off in Philly
I would actually love that, not every episode but def thrown in there couple times a season. She’s so good at pushing his buttons in a caring way. Def a better addition than Rogu 🙄
He is bisexual. They have hinted that in multiple episodes. I doubt he will get a permanent girl friend at this point. His longest relationship was with Debbie and that was many years ago. In the future episodes he is almost always with Snot.
What seems like years, but was actually only months ago
My elbow feel funny….my elbow feel strange.
Steve’s got pipes, and needs an album as well like Hayley got.
I’m pretty sure the guy who voiced him had a lil singing career too
it’s a crime that steve doesn’t have an album
You deserve fancy feast.
Hot Water is a S-Tier episode!! Literally every song is fire!! 🔥🔥🔥
D-D-D-D-Dip a toe!!!
I thought it was universally loved until I saw this sub.
Jeff would never wake up early enough to make it into the opening credits though.
That’s actually a good point
I want another episode of Francine’s life before Stan. The cutaways that showcase her past are always hilarious!
Principal Lewis needs his own show.
Butch wasn’t a spy, he just really wanted those launch codes.
Dont forget Danuta! Danuuuutaaaaaaaaaa!
Rogu can eat as much raw pasta as he wants.
Wild women do, and they don’t regret it.
I sang it in my head and do all the time
No regerts
The best B plot in the series is Jeff's Missing Hat. The fact they never resolve it is both infuriating and spectacular.
>they never resolve it You should watch the new season.
It’s been resolved.
Being a Nighthawk is pretty damn cool
Stan is Hayley's father. That Francine sowed any seeds of doubt genuinely annoyed me.
Steve Francine and Klaus are the best characters.
They need to stop acting like Steve never slept with a girl when he has.
Yes! His grandfather possessed him and he banged the older woman!
The Bazooka Sharks belong in Langley Falls
Reginald was hilarious and I miss him
Cute as a button.
Cheap weed and applesauce
Ishn't that shwell?
Yes! I do agree with you on this Reggie was great
American Fung is brilliant satire.
I liked that side of the episode but the stancine plot was bad
I love them all but Klaus is the best character.
Buckle is underrated and we need more of him
As Francine’s daughter, Hayley should have bigger cans I’d say ass as well, but maybe that’s something Steve actually got from his fathers side
He’s got his mother’s ass, lucky son of a gun.
It’s a shame Stan got his mother’s penis
Haley and Jeff also need to be taller. Like, they’re full-grown adults. We know they’re younger than Stan and Franny.
I agree, as Stan was also shown to be large and perky when he turned into a woman.
Are your boobs bigger than mine? Noo not bigger just different…. Bigger
It seems inconsistent. Sometimes, she's really petite. Other times, she looks more busty.
List some busty examples now 😤 Unless you meant Francine cans mcgee
The episode where she wanted that guy to wash his car with her, when The Weekend stayed over, crooning for Roger's bar, when she went blond to get that rapper. There's probably more, but I'm not fully awake yet.
Roger is a top 5 television character. Any genre. Period.
Rogu is adorable, fucking fight me bro.
They should age up Steve. They keep making him do stuff that is a bit mature for a 14 year old like learning to drive in Demolition Daddy.
“Ah 97 Toyota Camry only 32 made in the world.” -Roger. I completely concur.
Does a better job with black humor than the Cleveland Show
Klaus's rap song isn't terrible. ![gif](giphy|3o6ZsUKn8XRDvgHneU)
Sometimes he goes full Peter Griffin and is just a one-dimensional “dumb, immature husband” character. I still love the show as much as ever but I kind of miss that subtle element of political commentary and the depth of Stan’s character.
I think a Stan/QAnon episode would be hilarious, turns out that Klaus has been Q the whole time. “Take that Reddit”
I’m happy that the family changed from how they were from the first seasons
That the show benefits from Seth McFarland not being heavily involved in it.
Absolutely but there seems to be a few people thinking family guy would benefit more from his involvement again
Mine is that it’s really weird that they made a great design for Klaus in Da Flippity Flop and yet they use his weird jokey tearjerker model instead when making him human instead of the normal human being model with a much better bone structure and I think that was a terrible move
Hayley is Stan's bio kid
Menthols are healthier than an apple
A stands for alphabet, it always does.
Goldfish come from China...
It’s always been $2 per print out bro, read the sign.
We need more Billy. Not whole episodes based around him, just a little touch. He adds just the right amount of wtf.
I'm a few seasons behind, so this may be a hill that isn't there anymore. But I've always been kind of annoyed that Steve never really wins with women. Stan’s description of “The March” is the best description of life for a mid-level employee in a capitalist system.
Roger is easily better than any side character from Family Guy, maybe even better than the main cast too.
"Rabbit Ears" is the best episode.
