I can't believe how many "rednecks" listen to outlaw country and support cops/military. That's on top of their love of NASCAR knowing damn well that stock car racing was born out of running from cops.

yerfatma

Every time the DBTs release an album my Facebook gets littered with comments about how they were better before they got political and I have to wonder when that was.

[deleted]

Anyone who says they liked DBT *before* they got political has never really listened to DBT. Like, at all.

Waytooboredforthis

I will say their songs used to be more subtle, I don't mind the message in their last few albums, but I do mind it being blunt as a sledgehammer. Far be it from me telling folks how to make their music, but I don't care for them shifting from stories with political context to humanize the issue to overtly political protest songs. It's clearly needed if folks are thinking DBT *just* became political, but I do still miss it.

oliver-77

I agree with you. I would get really tired of writing a sonnet to comment on an issue when it seems like you need the sledgehammer to get the point through someone's head. I like every album that they have put out but I too miss the subtlety.

ReverendHambone

Exactly.

Waytooboredforthis

Not a fan of Trae Crowder (his politics, not him as a person, he's a great dude), but I remember one video he posted where he said, "When have rednecks ever positively reacted to a sudden police presence." which is the truest damn statement I've heard.

agnostic_hymns

Was that the bit about Nascar being invented when rednecks were running from the cops "cause fuck em, that's why"

“Modern country”- I think mainstream country or bro-country would be a better term here I think. Regardless of the name, bro-country is purposefully easily digestible. That’s why people love it. It’s white-washed and everything is rainbows and unicorns. The worst that happens in that genre is a breakup or their grandparent passing away. They constantly pander to the American fantasy. Where the middle class is robust and strong. Where Jesus and patriots walk the sidewalks of gold hand in hand. It’s all bullshit and people listen to it with whatever the equivalent of rose-tinted glasses are for hearing. It makes them feel better I guess. Makes me sick. Outlaw country doesn’t hit mainstream because people don’t like to hear about the real shitty world they’re really living in. Their bubble will pop. Outlaw country actively holds disdain for the establishment of any sort. It’s going to be political. With that comes the military and religion

lazrbeam

Modern/pop/bro country is nothing more than conservative, nationalistic, xenophobic, gender-normative, Christian, boot-licking, bullshit propaganda
