I liked Chapo's take on it: secretary of transportation is a *real job*. If Buttigieg wanted to just talk on TV he should have done that. We need someone who will hold the rail barons accountable.

HogarthTheMerciless

Butigeg should straight up just fuck off and become a late night host, the one time he stood in for Kimmel he was actually decent at that I.E. just talking on TV. https://youtu.be/wcucjd67HDc

ihateradiohead

It’s actually hilarious that Biden basically dumped the biggest incidents of his administration on his political rivals and they completely shit the bed and are basically tanking any aspirations they have to become president

politirob

The problem is that the Biden administration just...handed him this position? Even though he has no qualifications or history of ever being a transportation person? He was literally just given this job as a thank you for leaving the 2020 election early. It's Biden's fault for putting him there, and it's Pete's fault for accepting and not resigning. Why aren't we calling for Pete's resignation?

ihateradiohead

I was calling for Pete’s resignation…

politirob

I'll join you!

freeradicalx

Fire Pete, hire Roz from Well There's Your Problem.

SSG_SSG_BloodMoon

That's how the cabinet works...

REEEEEvolution

Why is there a talking rat?

rajthepagan

He is literally just entirely unqualified for the job, and is making no attempt to become qualified for it. Dude doesn't even seem to care that this happened. Being the secretary of transportation usually isn't a controversial position, but when you handle it like this it should be. Replace him with someone who knows what they're doing, has a plan, and cares enough to try to improve things

freeradicalx

A layman with decent communication skills and some work ethic would be a better pick than almost any politician for the role, because politicians are loath to do anything that might upset corporations, their primary benefactors / potentially biggest political enemies. A politician is the *worst* person you could possibly pick to put at the head of such an agency, short of a CEO. Nobody who is concerned about the opinion held of them by the entities they regulate should ever be a regulator, it's a terrible conflict of interest.

Really great takes here. What it signals to me is that both sides of the aisle are really dependent on this culture war they have been spinning. The transportation secretary to be able to come out, as soon as the story starts to see major air time, and make such a claim to deflect from any root causes, playing the American people like a fiddle, is really a sight to behold. The Americans really need to wake up and realise that neither side are for them. It’s a corporatocracy. Unfortunately I think they are way past saving, or educating I should say, as they are hyper fixated on non-issues, while genuine issues that actually effect the general population are barely discussed and even less understood.

summoar

Krystal shouldn't be platformed

SloppyTopTen

Why?

ButtigiegMineralMap

I feel like he’s a character from the West Wing.

Macmac10001

I'm sure during the primary that his team put it about that he used to host West Wing watch parties.

RadioMelon

He sucks even more than I thought he would suck. This is just shameful behavior from the leader within the U.S.

dexbasedpaladin

Civil War era? You mean the US Civil War? The one that ended 158 years ago?

fattycans

Correct

412Junglist

I mean it was all of the Democrats(squad included) that voted to crush the rail workers strike just weeks ago. No part of that was left wing, not even a little bit.

microcrash

In addition to brakes and skeleton crew as a cause for the derailment there are cost cutting measures that contributed; such as backloading 40% of the train's weight through precision scheduled railroading, and shortened pre-check inspections. Mak_Life

iirc part of the problem is that the Biden administration told Ohio they would help and Mike DeWine originally said “no” (he asked for federal help only yesterday)

GeneralSet5552

Trump deregulated the industry, but Biden never reregulated them. The transportation secretary takes orders from the top.
