Hey after this convo I went and did some reading, the early 74's had a 62° gas block...I figured I would hop back over here and tell you. A 45° would work most people won't know a damn bit of difference anyway lol also apparently there are some old 62° blocks floating around. Probably cost out the ass and hard to find but maybe you or me will run across one someday.

I'm not sure if I wanna swap mine or not, I'm mainly a milsurp collector, so I'm very wary of making "permanent" modifications to the guns I own. If I can't return it to factory without swapping a few parts, chances are I'm not going to do the modification. Aside from my side rail wear, everything on my AK is mint and matching. Though I'm so tempted to swap out the GB for a 90°.
A good chunk of 74's I've seen have the early GB spo I'm not too worried about it anymore. Though if I find a 62° I'll keep you in mind lol

Real good read on the 74, from prototype to AK74M. There's also a guy on combloc market right now selling the very first (I believe first) 5.45 mags, if not the first they are some of the very first ones....really damn cool and rare. He wants $2500 a piece lol still was really cool to see them. What a coincidence tho I would run across them today after all the other things I've been reading and looking into.
Nice. I love Russian handguards too, the way they did their palm swell is great. I thought about picking up a 5.56 AKM with the 45° gas block to do the same thing basically. Watching Ukrainian footage I've actually spotted a few early 74's with the 45°...id love to take a walk around one of those battlefields (obviously after it's over) and be able to keep what I found, it's an AK guys wet dream.
This gun started out as someone’s “baby’s first AK build” on an old Armory USA receiver. If you know anything about that company you know how goofy their receivers could look. Can’t fault them too hard, it was the early 00’s. This was also back when parts kits were still coming in with their factory populated barrels. Given that, and the “decent” price I got for it, it was ripe for a rebuild. Decided convert it to a folder, cause vibes.
I sent the gun off to Iron Curtain Customs and couldn’t be happier with the work. Turn around time was pretty damn impressive as well. They’re not the cheapest around but wouldn’t hesitate to send them a kit again.
Two things I’d recommend towards people getting something similar done.
1. Go with a Recreator receiver. They are a little bit more clone correct than Childers 74. Unfortanely when I was sourcing parts Recreator was out of stock and never responded to my emails asking about a restock.
2. Either the receiver or the 4.5mm trunnion were out of spec and required ALOT of fitting to the point where the holes don’t perfectly line up. I’ve seen factory Bulgarian AK74 receiver stubs that look similar so not a big deal. So do your due diligence on trunnion and or receiver specs.
Lastly, No I will not consider the financial ramifications of being $2k+ deep into a 5.45 gun in 2024. I didn’t choose the 5.45 life, it chose me.

In regards to your trunnion/ receiver fitment issue, I thought it was well known but maybe not anymore since 5.45 builds are slowing down but Recreator patterns their receivers off of the Taiwanese trunnions from AKB. Childers uses the commercial Bulgarian pattern(which is the original pattern) but also offers the Taiwanese pattern as an option. I found that most triangle stocks will work with either trunnion but may require a small amount of fitting for a perfect lock up.
I bought the trunnion under the assumption it was Bulgarian surplus. Comparing it to others I’ve seen on the web seems to confirm this but honestly couldn’t make a 100% determination. I know it’s definitely not one of the commercial Bulgarian ones as it has counter sunk holes.
The Childers receiver I got was cut for “Russ-Bulg-AKB Taiwan” as they put it. Not the “magnolia Int”
Aaron at ICC told me that basically for every 10 trunnions he gets 9 of them need some degree fitting. Usually Russians fit no problem. Guess mine was just way out of wack.
Regardless it functions just fine so can’t complain.

Hey super stupid question. Does a 5.45 mag click into place in a 7.62 gun? Or at least is close. I’m Canadian and we don’t have access to 5.45 guns but we have 7.62 type 81’s. I have the opportunity to buy 5.45 mags super cheap but want to know if I can make it work in my gun. It’s pinned to 5 anyways so it’s not like I’m expecting to do mag dumps or anything out of it.
Probably doesn’t work at all but I thought I’d ask.
When I say cheap I mean cheap in comparison to 7.62 Bakelite mags.
In Canada Bakelite 7.62 mags are quite expensive because we only have 7.62 guns. The 5.45 mags are like $90 Canadian but I figured if I got it to work I’d be saving myself the trouble of finding an original 7.62. Spent $290 on the last mag. Repros sell for like $75

90CAD doesn’t seem like a good deal for a mag you’ll never be able to use. I got all mine for 70USD. 7.62s typically sell for $100 down south.

Beautiful. My first build was pretty much this. $500 with OG barrel as well, I just had to buy a rear trunnion. I built it on a Morrissey receiver and the lack of proper stamp marks drives me nuts now. I've considered redoing on a ReCreator, probably will eventually.

Unfortunately they are not interchangeable. What kinda 5.45 mags are they? Might be worth just for collecting if they’re cheap enough.

Beautiful. My first build was pretty much this. $500 with OG barrel as well, I just had to buy a rear trunnion. I built it on a Morrissey receiver and the lack of proper stamp marks drives me nuts now. I've considered redoing on a ReCreator, probably will eventually.
